  • I use a 3/16 file rather than a 5/32 to file the tree topping saws like the Stihl 200t

agreed, i had all kinds of annoying issues with the recommended 5/32 file, after watching Buckin' s videos on filing i went up to the 3/16 file an BOOM massive difference! haven't looked back since! that was 18 months ago, thanks again Buckin'!!

Bucking it's crazy,my mentor I basically apprenticed under for four years taught me how to sharpen chains.that said,he taught me to use a 3/16 file just like you said on my topping saws.anyways my saws cut faster and more smooth than almost everybody I see cutting, even cut faster than brand new chains so I know when you showed me the side profile of your chains they look almost identical to my chains.only difference is the ratio to hardwoods vs softwoods is probably reversed because I'm in Iowa and all we have is oak, ash, locust and maple.some cottonwood too but rarely do we get into any sizable fur or pine.just wanted to tell y'all that buckin ain't no joke ,the man knows how to cut and he's honest.pay attention when he tells us stuff and you will learn ways that will keep you productive but most of all keep ya safe.thanks buckin.

You're one gutsy man. I'm thinking of another word but I'm using my filters luckily. You're also quite inspiring, that's for certain. If there were only more people like yourself living in this harsh and grueling world, it would be a much more peaceful and kind world to live in. You're inspirational to myself and to many, many others. Thank you for doing what you do on this channel; it's far more than simply cutting down trees.

Funny thing is that when I was a kid cutting firewood in the late 1970's/early 80's, I didn't have a problem using the 5/32" file, now I do. I did have a few decades of the Navy in between though. I tried the 3/16 on my little 435 Husky, it cuts better than it ever had using the called for 5/32" file. My theory is that it changes the cutting angle of the tooth just enough to make it take a good bite of the wood.

I highly appreciate Buckin Billy for who he is, what he does and where he's been.
A super fine father /mentor/ brother... I know i will never catch up and see all the great videomovies that have been put out on you tube of tree cutting and chain sharpening and drumming etc etc etc
But I'm so happy that i have been able to watch /listen /learn so many different things. I feel that i am a stronger/safer/kinder person.
And thanks to many fine folks that are the Buckin Army.
This world is a rocky road and with Buckin's attitude of gratitude I'm able to walk barefoot on Mother Earth and absorb her energies to create a better me.
The grounding onto earth with bare feet gives a connection that cannot be measured /described by humans, only the animals know what is real. Humans are a close second. 😊

I hand file just like my father who was born in 1912 taught me , I will soon be 69 and have not forgotten his lessons about thinking first about how this blade cuts and how this blade cleared the swarf! File for that result , test cut inspect the chips you will learn as you observe , I could tell you what I have learned but you may learn I have made an error so up out Peter should decide for yourself! That’s why I like your approach!

So a 4.8mm file. Hmm, I might give that a try, I've been using the 4.5 so far (I agree with you regarding the 5/32 - 4mm file, I don't even know why Stihl recommends it, it's too small for the tooth on Stihl's 3/8p chains, on Oregon's low profile 3/8 seems to work ok), but I wouldn't mind using the same file for 3/8picco and my .325 chains.

If you can't get hand filing buckin style, buy a genuine stihl file holder in the right size. Its important to match the right holder, file and chain. I just bought a .404 file holder for my 3/8 chain with a 7/32 file. The expensive orange 2 in one holder cant be adapted, and can only use 13/64 files on 3/8 chain. If you have lost the hook in the tooth, get the gullet buckin style hand filing then finish sharpening with the file holder. I have tried after market file holders and found their depth setting wrong, especially ones that include three file sizes with the one holder. I would have had 40 years of frustration if i hadn't learned to use the stihl holder well and most important when you are filing, think Be Kind, it helps.
