  • Dan explains why he wears the straps of his spurs in an unconventional way.
    The question very often gets asked "Why do you wear your spurs like that?" So we thought we'd share it with the arb community and for some of you, you may find you prefer it this way.
    As always thank you for watching.

    I like this method. I have also seen folks do a wrap around the shaft above the spur and then buckle. That seems even more secure and no real way to damage the strap itself

    You legend, I was always finding my spurs coming lose within the hour of a dismantle. Some people bang on about wrapping the strap around the stem of the spurs but me boots have always been too wide. This is a game changer.

    I'm just a homeowner that likes to climb and do my own tree work. I'm still a newb about it but I've watched a ton of your videos and appreciate your tips. I'm gonna bring down some black pines today and planned on spiking up them to get a rope in the tree then use my 5-1 pulley setup and pull them in "the path of least destruction". I'll give strapping below the spike a try.

I was just searching videos to see if the new way was wrong.. so thanks for clearing this up for me.. it's also less constricting and more comfortable. I was thinking of just adding an extra lower strap for straight over cross for even more security.. but this method works great.. simplicity

    Love the tip as always. my addition to it, when I tried wrapping around the bar "which I still do" I did it to one foot and not the other, and then as I climbed and when I got down I thought about witch foot felt better. You have the perfect experiment at your finger tips and I will now try it with your technique. if I had more money I would test out different spurs and pads this way too.

    You should look at the velcro lower straps. I have the same spikes and they are unbelievably more comfortable than the leather straps and allow you to get the correct tightness. I always pass my strap over the stem above the gaff. Watching you tighten those down on the gaff, my thought is those will ride up and off the gaff and become loose very quickly.

    Good Vid Mate! I noticed it in your video speed lining a conifer out but it was ages later I twigged something was different about your straps! :D
    This does depend on the Brand of spurs, boots and the combination of both. For example, I regularly use Haix Protector Pro boots and Bashlin steel twisted shank climbers and they have NEVER moved (been using this combination for about 8 years!). But other climbers have used my spurs and found they slipped on their boots or couldn't tighten them down onto their smaller boots. likewise I have found other brands of spurs slipped off of my boots when they rode over the heel.

    I've tried this, and with the boots i was wearing had concerns about the strap slipping over my heel. I could never get wrapping the straps (don't remember why, boot too wide or it just didn't pull the gaffe against my foot). I've been climbing on notch Gekkos for a 6 months now, they have holes for attaching spike acenders. I use throw line to tie a screw link tight to the frame against the front hole, and put my strap through that. Haven't done anything else since i started that. The only issue being that the strap does rub against the mounting screws for the spikes, and is wearing through the straps.

      Step 1: use a downward (axe-style) kick (from taekwondo) on something first, to knock the stirrup back in front of your heel.
      Step 2: Set your rope good, then spike a trunk to firmly reseat the stirrup into your foot arch, in a position where you can keep that downward pressure while then redoing the strap tightly.

    I will give this a shot. I have worn spurs for over 20 years and it has just been an ongoing problem I live with. One thing I have found helpful is to put on my lower straps first, before I secure the upper straps. I have a problem in which the shank wants to slide backwards at the top and forwards at the bottom, creating a situation where the shank is not aligned with my lower leg. It's about a 25-degree angle. The pressure of that misalignment is felt in my knees a lot. I have always just dealt with it.

  • @mmoseleywpi
    @mmoseleywpi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like it. I never had an issue with my spurs moving until I switched to the "cadillac" shin pads. The extra thickness of the foam on those pads makes the spur want to twist backwards toward the heel. Even wearing boots with a good chunky heal I had issues, especially in sticky sapwood that pulls down on the spur when you pull your foot out. I knew i needed a way to clamp the spur into the heal pocket, and this looks like a great way to do it. Going to try it soon!

      I don’t know if it’s safe to use on rope, but I use Technu to remove sap in my beard, hands, and cloths. It’s designed for poison oak, but it has many other uses. Works great.

    Do you find that the strap wears faster and needs to be replaced?
