Part of what makes this song so tough to engage with out of the gate is that the majority of it is in 9/8, which is a really odd meter to begin with, but the band plays with all kinds of ways to sub divide that and play polyrhythms over it. Sometimes it's 5/8+4/8, sometimes 8+1, sometimes two units of what's essentially 9/16. When the drums come in, Danny is actually accenting every third note (so it feels like 3 bars of 3/8). *None* of that feels particularly natural, and they really start rapidly shifting between different meters within the time signature in that build up before the drop... BUT... that's what makes the drop so good. It's so chaotic leading into that, and then you get that moment to catch your breath, and then it's this straight 6/4 beat (which feels very easy to the western ear) that it makes that part feel so heavy and head bangy because you were trying so hard right before that to find the downbeat/rhythm. Anyway, great reaction as always, Drew!

Your face when that drop hits is the perfect personification of that moment! I must have pulled the same face when I first heard it too! There's so much going on before it drops - and I specifically love the way they slightly slow the pace as they drop into that 6/4 riff just to give it that even heavier groove - it just drags you into it and forces your neck muscles to start nodding your head. Seeing these guys live in 2006 still remains my favourite gig to this day, and I'm glad I got to see this song live.

And I really like the genuine reaction. I know as a reaction channel there's probably an instinct to exaggerate your reaction for thumbnail/views, but it's so much better to see a person actually hear and feel the music the way we do. Also, the HD sound makes a big difference. You're miles ahead of most others in this genre. Great job.

    (Minor spoiler for Tool concerts)
Literally just saw them perform this live last night in Boston. They did a lot of their older stuff during the concert and only 3-4 tracks from Fear Inoculum. What was really cool is that all of the old stuff they performed sounded AS GOOD OR BETTER than the studio albums AND they improvised extra solos and parts into many of them, including Jambi (the breakdown was insane). Anyway, it was my first Tool concert after listening to them for 20 years and I can't believe that I was still impressed even with high expectations. Excited to see you hear this for the first time!

    @drewdavidson6976 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Drew! Big fan and loving the journey you're on. I think you'd be really interested in Tool's use of time signatures in their music, especially given your reaction to this song. The first few minutes are counted in 9/8, this is not very common to hear in rock or metal (or Western music in general) so it's normal to not 'get the rhythm'. However, once the drop comes it switches to 6/4, this is much easier to follow because it is an even number and very close to the common 4/4 timing used in most rock and pop music. Tool are absolute masters of using and manipulating time and it's part of what gives their music such a unique appeal; the odd time parts create a mysterious labyrinth for the listener to get lost in, eventually giving way to an even timed drop or chorus which feels like a huge release of energy and the chance to bang your head!

I once read that Maynard stated that Jambi is about his son Devo... and it's called Jambi because that's the name of a blue-skinned genie head in a box, on an 80s kids show Pee-wee's Playhouse...google it... was his son Devo's favorite show as a kid...

I don't get the people who say they don't grasp or find the rythm. I hear it right away. And it's awesome. Sometimes there are multiple rythms layered which just adds to the awesomeness and complexity.

That's how it is with Jambi, and a lot of Tool. You don't catch it the first time, or the second time, but eventually you catch the feel and learn to love it.

When you listen to wings for Marie and 10,000 days, it’s best to really hear and understand the lyrics. Understanding Maynards relationship with his mother and hearing these two songs, man it just gives me goosebumps and can even bring a tear or two

Concerning the build up I once thought Jambi is like an ordinary Tool song in reverse: Starts with a massive, right in your face riff, getting even heavier when the bass joins, and getting more and more harmonic and grooving the longer the track lasts. I love the lyrics!
For easy playlist listening it fits well after The Pot, (spoiler⚠️) which ends right where Jambi begins.
Nice reaction! As always a great pleasure to follow your hearing and reception! 😎

Dude, if you want to feel the rhythm at the beginning of the song, just take the rhythm from the drop, and double it. It's in nine, and in groupings of 3 and 2 notes (3-2-2-2) so is kinda weird, but when you get it, it all clicks

The band usually has working titles for the tracks before Maynard add's the lyrics, vocals and a title to them.. this was a rare case that Maynard kept the working title for the official song title.
Justin came up with the riff that the song was build around... and the members thought it reminded them of the 'Jambi' genie from Pee Wee's Playhouse (kids show from the 80s).
Here's a clip of Jambi from the show: th-cam.com/video/XN5kVvR8VQI/w-d-xo.html

Great vid! I appreciate your honesty. No need to apologize for being honest, ever. Yah that drop really makes the song unique. I have no idea how they get that sound, but it's excellent. BTW, hoping I read that wrong...are you gonna release Wings pt1 and pt2 separately? Ouch! Ha! Those songs beg to be played as one track, one symphony. I'm sure once you listen you'll understand why. Well, maybe that's just my opinion? If you release them separately I'll give them separate listens. Maybe I will learn something focusing on one at a time. HA! It will be the first time I've listened to them separately in … well, forever. Maybe I never listened to them separately. haha fun.

Jambi is also a metrical footing used in various types of poetry. Although, in English it's usually spelled iamb.

"I couldn't find any sort of rhythm, and if I can't find the rhythm where I can nod my head, if I can't find that little bass kick or something like that, I'm pretty much out."
I think this is actually one of the things I like the most about Tool. With other music there's structural elements like that rhythm that you know is going to be there, and you feel in control of the listening experience because you know how the song is going to play out, more or less. Tool goes out of their way to use these weird time signatures and polyrhythms to make it so you can't do that, and you have no choice but to surrender yourself to the song and just enjoy the ride it takes you on, wherever it goes. Not having that feeling of control is weird and uncomfortable at first, but once you get used to it it's actually an incredible experience. This, combined with some of the other things Tool does (like not including the lyrics with their albums), feels to me like an intentional move to create more of a raw listening experience, to remove those more cerebral distractions in order to put you in a situation where you're just alone with the music, and can enjoy it on a more emotional level. Maybe that's just me though.

Make absolute sure Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned are played together with lyric video. I’m sure lots of people are already saying it but you WILL NOT get it if you don’t do this. It’s a weird fuckin song 😂 But very beautiful in its outlandishness 👉🏼

It's not just the drop. I used to really not like this track (used to skip it as it was 'too heavy'. Now I like every part of it, it's one of my favourites of all Tool! As you probs know, the more you listen, the more you appreciate and you find the rythmn where you could the first few times. Nice one.

  • @HunterHarris

Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned has got to be one of their most rhythmically complex songs (so many switch-ups!) along with some of Maynard's weirdest and most 'out there' lyrics (definitely need to look them up when you do the reaction). It tells the story of a John Doe who wakes up in the hospital and tries to describe to the nurses and doctors the insane DMT trip that he just experienced. Very hard to keep up with on the first listen but it's become one of my favorite tracks of theirs!

A suggestion for when you get to Right In Two, don't skip Intension. It's not exactly a two part song the same way Wings For Marie and 10,000 Days are, but I do kinda feel like Intension gets over looked by many and it is a great lead in to Right In Two.
