Really enjoyed your take on this exceptional song. Don't be concerned when you listen to Tool about tapping your foot or nodding your head in time with the music. Their time signatures "wander" at the best of times which is part of what makes the music so dynamic to listen to. When they combine different time signatures for different instruments at the same time it can lead to some "what beat am I keeping here?" moments. Keep doing Tool songs and you'll have a tonne of views. The tool army have an insatiable appetite.

When you listen to Tool, unplug from everything going on in your life and close your eyes and just listen. It is almost a form of meditation. By the end of the song, you would have had an existential conversation with yourself about your life. Tool’s first EP came out in ‘92. I’ve been following since the beginning. So, album wise, 27 years they’ve been around. Enjoy your Tool journey. And you don’t need to understand the complexity of the song, it’s what you take out of it that matters. Cheers 🍻

  • @deadohiosky1701

This is the quintessential Tool song for me. The suspenseful and dramatic crescendo from chill to epic, Adam's thick-yet-squishy tone, Maynard's intellectual/spiritual/inspirational lyrics and unique vocals, Justin's layered complexity and driving style, Danny's...well, I'm not even worthy to try to describe it.
Lateralus also showcases what makes Tool hard to listen to at first but so rewarding to fully unpack - as often as not, the main rhythm is actually the lead guitar and not the percussion. You can tell because the vocal rhythm almost always follows the guitar, not the drums. This is weird, the percussion and bass are normally supporting the main rhythm in most bands while lead guitar plays over the top. If you try to bang your head to the drums while it's playing more like a lead instrument in its own time signature over the top of the rhythm of the guitar and vocals, you will quickly get lost and go WTF??
After about 50 listens to this song you can readily follow both the guitar and drums simultaneously while they are playing different signatures altogether - like they're not even playing the same song - and then they come together at the end for that epic finish...man, it doesn't get any more rewarding listening to music for me.
So glad to see you getting into them. Seeing new fans discover them is the closest thing to feeling that sense of discovery myself all over again. Enjoy!

Thank you for not over-analyzing the song on your first listen. It should just be enjoyed for the first few listens.
Even Maynard James Keenan hates talking about the math behind the song, because it's meant to make the song sound better... not to be the focal-point. The whole song is about spiraling out (growing/evolving), and the Fibonacci Sequence is the math that spirals are based on.
Also, listen to The Patient from this same album. Amazing song.

Breaking down Tool's songs and lyrics is a lifelong journey. Even when you do spend time on it, your interpretation may be completely different from someone else's. That's what makes them such an amazing band, they take you places in your own mind that you didn't even know existed. I feel like this song is about the cycle of life from birth to death and pushing the human condition beyond what it has been before. I wouldn't call it their heavy track. Crosses more into a sorta funk/rock due to the minimal use of sig changes and standard riffs. Good song, but for their heaviest track I'd say Ticks and Leeches.

I think it is. Most of his vocal performances are subtle tenor. He performs it amazingly live, but I find myself being able to mimic his voice on my own. I can't do it for The Pot because he legitimately uses a register that only someone with training or just naturally great pipes is able to pull off.

Lateralus is Tools album of cerebral experience if that's a way to explain it in short.
10,000 days is the album after it and it's the most emotional one. The album before lateralus Aenima is more metal and also has a couple of songs where Maynard in one song expresses his absolute hatred of the then LA era, Tool is from Las Angelos at stuff like a real metal disstrack(?), Aenima is special, the theme of the Album is spirituality.
Undertow is the album before Aenima and that's deffintly Tool in their younger days, with more rage.
Then there is Saliva which is their "live only" album. Which is amazing.
You don't need drugs to enjoy Tool, it could deffintly help you just space out though if you do LSD and then listen to lateralus (the whole album) by yourself in a calm room.

Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
    Black (1)
    then (1)
    White are (2)
    all I see (3)
    In my infancy (5)
Red and yellow then came to be (8)
    reaching out to me (5)
    lets me see (8)
Each line's syllables add to to the previous two lines before it (1+1=2, 1+2=3, 2+3=5 and so on)
The next verse goes up to 13 before it spirals back to 5.

The beginning lyrics of the song use the Fibonacci number sequence, where each number is the total of the two before it.
    Black (1)
    then (1)
    white are (2)
    all I see (3)
    in my infancy (5)
red and yellow then came to be (8)
    reaching out to me (5)
    lets me see' (3)
The song was originally called "987" because it the time signature changes in a repeating sequence of 9/8, 4/4, then 7/8. Justin Chancellor, Tool's bassist, had this to say about the song: "For me, the song 'Lateralus' was the turning point. I wrote a bar of nine, a bar of eight, a bar of seven, and we originally called the song '987'. I saw it as something that kept getting shorter and shorter and, like a spiral, it kind of folds in on itself."

  • @ShadowArtist
    @ShadowArtist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

the song is about connecting to one's Higher-Self and the cosmos, to ascend and FEEL the ebb and flow of the energies of the Universe.
It's active-meditative, spiritually empowering, encouraging the listener to open one's Third Eye and explore a level of consciousness and spirit beyond the normal beyond the normal state of mind, someting beyond material (pushing beyond the the envelope of the material world).
The lyrics describe the state of mind from infancy onto adulthood, then onto spiritual awakening and spiritual explorations "as above, so below" is a ancient Hermetic-gnostic concept that the physical world is connected to and mirrors the spiritial and COSMIC realm..
the spiral is this galaxy, and like many galaxies spin in a spiral, mirrors the cycle of life and existence, and the spirit realm is also a spiral that ebbs and flows...

Yay! More TOOL! I’m sticking around to see you discover more 😊
Ps. The Fibonacci sequence can be found in nature. For me I have never really followed the mathematical part of it other than to know that when written out as a picture it forms a spiral which can be found in everything (snails, etc). Which in essence is the natural scientific symmetry if that makes any sense. It’s actually quite beautiful if you spend a few minutes reading up on it.
Edit: hence the reference to swinging on the spiral 💛

maynard, the singer says that their music is a "tool" to help the listener process whatever they may be going through. you did just that.
as for all the numbers stuff, there is a geometric pattern in the shape of a spiral that shows up all through nature called "the golden ratio" everything from galaxies to snail shells. and their is a mathematic formula that it follows, the Fibonacci sequence. over analyzing allows us to see this but digging so deep into it its easy to forget how beautiful it is. the message i get here is to follow your heart, and not to get to caught up with the day to day. at least that's how i feel about it.
