Marinemaster wasn't there from the beginning. I think its a much cleaner dial now then the generations with MM.

The original Tuna from 1978 NEVER had the marinemaster verbiage either. The 2020 release basically goes back to the 1978 design, hence the fatter hands/fatter hour markers and prospex logo. I already ordered my SBBN045 from a Ebay seller.

Nope. I like my 031 much better, even without saphire crystal. And why would they take off Marinemaster? Bad move IMO. But great review, thank you.

I still prefer the SBBN031. I prefer the handset, the signed crown, the “Marinemaster” text, the domed crystal and the stock bracelet. I modded my SBBN031 with a sapphire crystal from Crystal Times. Still, the new version is stunning...

I couldn't disagreed more. The pointer hour from the old one just doesn't fit the overall design. The flat crystal just fits better. The bracelet I agree with you...really can't stand rubber straps.

To be fair, this is more like a re-issue of the "Tuna Can", not the quartz Marinemaster. I, too, greatly prefer the Tuna Can over the Marinemaster in terms of looks, size and practicality. My vintage 7549 has an interesting movement: essentially, the 6309 original Turtle movement converted to be powered by a crystal. The domed crystal really tops off its looks beautifully and I wished this new one had a domed crystal as well. The hour hand on the new one is bisected rather than sectioned cross-wise, but that doesn't bother me.

Thanks for the great video, which addresses my desire to get a sapphire Tuna. Battery life is supposed to be 5 years, but I'm going on year 6 on my SBBN033. I prefer the more aggressive handset on the SBBN043. I wore my SBBN031 Tuna yesterday and the only flaw is that the tuna can doesn't conform to the wrist that well, nothing like the Captain Willard, but it's not a big deal. This new Tuna has to be a priority on my wish list. Thanks again.

7549 was the movement used in the first 300m tuna 1978. Was based on the 6309 automatic movement which most of the parts including the main plate which is the same. The 7C46 came out in late 80s which was the replacement not as good as the 7549 lots of plastic and composite parts.. Check out Spencer Klein on TH-cam he goes indepth with the 2

  • @35goaltender
    @35goaltender 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah, if you want to take better photos, the flat crystal is a definite benefit. But it takes away some of the character of the watch, much more generic looking. The previous dial had multiple layers, which is more difficult and costly to align, but adds intrigue. Crown looks cheaper, and is. The elimination of the Marinemaster text...iconic to the Seiko high end diver watches...

They are going back to the original Tuna. Marine master was a later addition. Handset goes back to the original too. Crown not too sure but looks much better machined on the new one. Plus sapphire crystal on new one so no micro scratches building up over time. It's a good update I think.

Cool video and congrats on the new Tuna Rob👏👏👏 I’m a fan of Tunas. I was lucky enough to nick name the Emperor, Blue Fin and Ninja Tunas 😎 That being said, IMO Seiko nailed the latest generation of 300m Tunas. Dial, hand set, crown and sapphire are perfect. Price, not so much. For that price Seiko should have reintroduced the SBBN015 bracelet. Having sold off my Emperor, Darth, SBBN007 and S23611J1 “Taiwan golden tuna”, I’m looking forward to ordering a new SBBN045.

Used to own some and don't like the difficulty of turning the bezel (hard to turn with wet hand) and the CRAZY reflection of the crystal (not readable when swimming in water). Was avoiding watching this video cause whenever I see something on the tuna, I want to buy another one.
I had the previous gen blue Tuna SBBN037. Loved that watch and also got from Gnomon. But, I think it had slight flaws in it.. which was something I never experienced in an authentic new Tuna.
    1) the second hand didn't hit every marker exactly. I'd say somewhere around the bottom half seemed like it started to go off a bit.
    2) the bezel action wasn't consistent . The sound and tension changed about 1/4 of way through 360 rotation, off an on.
Both of these weren't deal breakers. But, I do expect perfection from a Tuna if I'm to expect perfection from any Seiko diver.
I'd love to get a new blue Tuna like what you have some day again. The price is a bit hard to swallow as they've gone up like around $300 over my last version. But, you know, despite the prices and hit or miss qc issues, ,it's easy to coax a reason to bite the bullet and swallow the bitter pill for cost of Seiko ownership.. the heart what the heart wants..
About the bezel. I also doubt it is ceramic. It looks like same kind of "liquid blue" they used in bezels of the sbdc053 and sbdc063.

In my experience the domed crystals are clearer in the water. I am not a huge fan of the domed crystals used in the Tuna's. I recently got a modded sbbn007 with a domes sapphire with blue ar. I had to chuck that turd and install an original hardlex so I can actually read the dial.
We have serviced quite a few 7c46's. The battery life is suppose to be 5 years if I recall. But most of them seem to be right at 8 years on battery life. Maybe they have low consumption on batteries so that is why they last longer than stated? I am not sure.

I really want to like the newer model but i dislike the hands and much prefer the ones on the former. It changes the entire aesthetic to me.

Oh, if only this exact design was Automatic. Maybe 6R or 4R. Hell I even take 7S and mod the movement myself 😭

Four years ago you could buy a Tuna for $995 w/bracelet. Today, it will cost $1,500. Only difference is sapphire crystal; it still uses the same quartz movement. Seiko, WTF?

@@Newtypenewtype besides the sapphire with AR coating, what were actually "improvements" and not just minor cosmetic changes?

Dayum, my 031 tuna has been my favourite watch since I got it late last year, but man does that new refresh look amazing.
All the updates make it look fantastic, my only niggle would be the prospex logo, would still prefer the marinemaster moniker.
How do you get on with the Strapcode 22mm bracelets on the tuna, given the 21.5mm lugs
    Excellent video as always🖖

I think the thing that lost me was the flat crystal vs the dome, and the basic dial vs the beautiful stepped dial on the 031

what's the issue with it not being ceramic? are you suggesting that seiko's enamel is cheaper and isn't as tough as ceramic?

@@RandomRobReviews Hi. No, not at all! I just wonder if you think they're trying to save money with the enamel, and if it's a good as ceramic.
The only other brand I know that does enamel is Certina.
