I own this SLA Seiko. It is on a bor bracelet right now. Beyond stunning watch. The quality and finishing of the case is amazing. Hand made watch by craftsman. The ever brilliant steel is durable. I wear my SLA 043 to work on a farm. My SLA 039 went to Japan for service, came back with some travel scuffing on the side case. Cape cod cloth restored it to new. Own GS, and SLA divers. No rolex. Teddy B just went to Japan and did a story on the craftsman who made GS mechanical watches. Saw the people who actually made my watch. Too cool!
@@EscapementWatch it is a strapco bor. Fits this one fine. Bought the same one in 19 mm. Doesn't fit my 039, or 043. The last link is too wide to fit either watch. 🙄 Have the 043 on a strapco ladder bracelet. Cool vintage look
Will always pick SEIKO Anytime. Sold all my swiss watches but kept and added more Seiko in my collection. My nature of work and the things I do in the real world, I don't have to worry about what happens to my seiko. It never failed me, I have dropped them, bumped them, do crazy stuff with seiko on my wrist and never sent any of my watches for servicing yet they never failed and still accurate. My swiss watches? more on marketing, special materials, and being fragile. Even for my special occasion where I have to wear a suite, I'd wear my Seiko Cocktail or the Orient Bambino.
Yeah I guess I wouldn't either, unless I want to check off boxes. "submariner" check! But its just something I had say to ease any Rolex hater comments at the end because it lost.
I have the sla043, and it's a great watch. Retail is 4k compared to rolexes 8k. But rolex include a great bracelet and use luxury materials like white gold and platinum . So considering this I would say , both are priced about right. The sla may hold it's value over time , but the rolex is something else. The sla will be more exclusive as under 2k units are produced. The sla biggest fault is seiko not regulating the movement , but it's biggest triumph is it's build quality. It's hard to say which is the better watch taking everything into account . Both are fantastic in different ways. One thing I will say is, I wouldn't pay over retail just to get a rolex , that's for sure !!!
I also have a sla043. Stunning watch! Quite special.. It is kind of my grail diver. Not interested in all the hype of Rolex branding on the new watches. I do think that a vintage Rolex might be interesting though.
Agree on Seiko not regulating. My SLA047 runs at +7 consistently, which unfortunately is in spec so Seiko won’t regulate under warranty. Its not bad, but My Rolex Milgauss has run at +0.5 for all 10 years I’ve owned it.
I own both watches and while I would not trade my Sub for the Seiko, I think the Seiko is just as good and a much better value for what it is. I paid $3500 for mine new and it was totally worth it! The finishing on the Seiko is much better than say, Tudor and as good as Omega and even Rolex, in my opinion. I put a high quality jubilee bracelet on my SLA and it is now one of my favorite watches. I was not a big fan of that black rubber strap and did not feel it complemented the overall quality of the watch itself. Thanks for the video and while I'm not sure it is better than the Rolex, it is just as good for a lot less $$!
Absolutely great video, well researched and presented. The only other thing to add is that a lot of people assume that those wearing a Rolex and actually wearing fakes. No one ever assumes that a end Seiko is a fake, but they don;t equally appreciate the finishing and quality of the movements.
In 1972, a steel Submariner cost 285 USD; that's about 2800 USD today. Take into account a better movement today, the sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel and some white gold - let's round that up to $3800. That's what a Sub is actually worth so use that number when you compare the Rolex to the Seiko.
And that’s what I have been saying for years. It’s a great watch and that’s what is worth. Not $10,000 at an AD or $13,000 used on e bay with scratches
This BATTLE was fun to make! been fighting the "C" V1rus all week but still wanted to get this out. If you are a Rolex fan and are offended do not take it so seriously, these are for fun. And Seiko fans same thing. Battles are NOT REVIEWs. They are a fun way to pit two watches against each other. I understand that I could have a worse example of a Seiko in the future or better example of a Rolex in the future. The nature of watches is that each one is made different. One Rolex is going to have tons of dust, scratches, others will have none. Out of the 10 I've reviewed I'd say 2 were bad. So 20%. This one is one of them. I didn't give the Seiko movement enough time to adjust on the 3rd round like I did with the Rolex so that's why we took the 5 number as the 4th. If your an old sub you will understand that easily. I asked SII instruments and they told me high end movements like the 8L use spron 610 but in the same email told me to confirm with Seiko. So maybe a language barrier but even if the mainspring is 510 or made of cheese we can see how it performs is like a highly tuned hairspring! Keeping everything steady in all positions. A GEM! Lastly if I missed anything let me know original video was 50 minutes long and boring so we trimmed the waffling as best we could!
Thanks bro!!! During filming this I had a fever, now I'm good but my voice is terrible. So although I need to film many things. I can't do anything because my voice sounds rough.
Marinemaster is a fine piece of engineering. Monobloc case is stunning and 8L movement runs on chronometer parameters. Submariner is overpriced by hype’s brand, and for paying Federer, sponship F1, Wimbledon, etc, etc. I have both of them, they’re fantastic watches but by pure raw quality Seiko is the winner
The Rolex has one huge problem. That being, it is the most homaged / cloned / faked watch in the world, and to be totally honest, it doesn't do a thing for me. I'd take the Seiko.
Rolex Submariner Stainless Steel Black dial, if you have not never worn one you are missing out big time. Seiko you are backing the underdog. Even Multi Millionaire Producer Michael who has some of the Rarest most expensive Watches, Richard Mille, diamond encrusted watches was ask if he could only wear one watch his answer without hesitation was Rolex other Watch TH-camrs have said the same thing.
Great video as always. I own a Rolex rootbeer two-tone and mm300 sla047j. Take away the gold factor from my Rolex. When I sit them next to each other, the Seiko is equally as impressive, if not more special, on its finish (keep in mind I paid $20,800 AUD for my Rolex and only $3600AUD for sla047j), which is mind-blowing when you think of the price difference. But when it comes to the conversation of the movement, because of Seiko's unwillingness to regulate 8l35, the Rolex leaves the Seiko in the dust for accuracy! I leave my Rolex for five days in the box while maintaining winding it every second day, so it still runs, it doesn't lose time. If I did the same for the 8l35, I would lose a minute which is quite sad for a watch that is meant to have a fantastic GS movement. I see comments about people saying, "I would never pay that much for a Seiko" and that a Seamaster or black bay is better. It drives me nuts because, owning both those watches previously, I can safely say the Seiko finish on SLA models is way better! But I don't bother to argue because of the weak movement. I know it has potential, but as it is now, it's pitiful. Maybe because I'm a performance guy rather than a looks guy when it comes to cars, it has also translated over to watches. In cars, the most important thing is a powerful engine that runs flawlessly, not an engine that leaves the factory, and the engineers say, hopefully, you are lucky and got one of the engines that run well!
@@EscapementWatch Imagine this was regulated! You would have to have rocks in your head not to buy an SLA model over anything else. Hand finishing Better finish than Rolex Fully in-house hand assembled movement With cosc accuracy Boom
I have 4 8L35 SLA divers. All run consistently at -+ 3 sec a day. My only 8L55 ran at plus 14. It went back to Japan for service under warranty. Came back running at plus 5-7. All said, have a number of older 4r35 divers that run plus 3.
Agree 100%. I have bought and sold 5 Subs and other Rolex watches (Datejust, Explorer, etc). I’m over Rolex and their marketing BS. I don’t like the “look at me, I made it” feel when I wear it. Real watch enthusiasts may fall into the Rolex trap at some point in their watch collection journey but eventually realize that they are paying for 50% marketing and 50% watch. I’d rather wear a Grand Seiko or equivalent and screw what others think. If it brings me joy - that’s what counts. Of course it took me a while to realize that.
I do find it incredibly hard to believe that a Rolex would have that much dust underneath the crystal from the factory. You mentioned it was pulled form the grey market... I wouldn't be surprised if someone popped the case back open and went inside the movement to confirm it's authenticity. Dealers aren't supposed to do that under warranty because it violates it, but with super clones increasing in popularity, it's entirely possible.
Too bad Seiko haven’t figured out how to make a good bracelet that matches the Swiss, even at Grand Seiko. Once they figured it out, I’ll be getting one asap. Best case finishing in the business. Thanks for the review.
Indeed, what the hell is it with Seiko and their crap bracelets? Even the straps are rubbish, you have to get a 5000USD watch from them to get a curved end fitted rubber strap...
Seiko knows they can't beat Rolex, nor do they want to. Seiko is as good at the game as Rolex. Each does their own thing and they both do it very well. I wouldn't want to be in a world without either.
Great battle, man! Awesome macro. I'm fortunate to have a few modern Rolex divers, but my heart lies with Seiko - particularly at SLA level. I think their value is great and long term you won't lose: the ltd Seiko market will rise as more people get educated as to the strength of Seiko. Obviously, it's unlikely to match Rolex for residuals, but that's not why we're here, eh? Get well soon! My objective (and long!) observation of the two brands' dive watches is as follows (based on 4 8L36 divers, 2 8L55 divers and 4 Rolex divers): Dive heritage: Rolex have been at dive watches longer, but Seiko ARE pro dive watches. Only Citizen gets close. Seiko/Rolex are the two leviathans of the dive watch world. Rolex has more experience with luxury timepieces, but Seiko is catching up fast - when a GS or SLA is as wearable as a Sub, Rolex will be in serious trouble. No winner here. In use (as in professional diving, forestry, farming, mountaineering, motorcycling (including off road), cycling, shooting: Both very tough, both will scratch, ding and suffer damage to bezel mechanisms, bracelets will eventually wear out, but both will run and run, reliably with only periodic service (Seiko cheaper, but less convenient). For me, Seiko cases are more comfortable. No winner. Water resistance: Both better than you! Seiko ISO rated, both better than advertised, Seiko massively so. A Tuna matches the Deepsea, all are easily Scuba/Tech ready. Seiko doesn't really make a Sea-Dweller rival anymore (1000m+, He etc, wearable, RIP SBEX03 MM1000). No winner. Movement/Time keeping accuracy: Modern Rolex are very accurate - all mine recent ones hold to +/-2sec/d. Some of my Seikos are more accurate, some are less. My best is a 8L55 and a 8L35 that keep to 1sec, my worst is a 8L55 that loses 9sec/d. Bottom line, they're just as accurate, but the Rolex are regulated. Seiko movements are now quite old, but tried and true, if thick (clever magic lever). Their amplitude and torque allows massive hands, huge lume. Not sure you need the Hi-beat, but it is cool. Neither are really decorated, Seiko are hand assembled, Rolex were, may still be (a bit). Winner, close: Rolex 3135 for accuracy and easy service. Lume: Seiko are better, although the new formulation Chromalight on the Explorer 36 is longer lasting than previous formulation and getting close to Seiko (but still not quite as good, if blue). Winner Seiko Design: Both are pretty conservative, but Seiko does more variety. I'd love to see a genuinely new design from both. GS? The Diver '68 design that forms the bedrock of Seiko divers is much more interesting than Rolex's '50s Sub design, but Rolex have always kept their design fresh and relevant - glacial, but clever. The '68 design lends itself well to dive use, bedding in to a wetsuit, while the Rolex is the better dual-use design - a dress diver that can be worn in almost any situation, not so a Tuna! Bigger iterations of the Rolex are a bit bulky and blunt, but effective. I'd say the Sub is the best daily diver design, the Tuna the best pure diver ever. Bezel: All my Seikos align, my Deepsea doesn't... Rolex (now) have the better click and more precise: superb, perfection. Seiko are getting better with every high-end watch they make. My SLA043 is very nearly at Rolex levels. Seiko (even older Marinemaster) much better than current Omega (terrible feel). Personally, I prefer the look of aluminium over ceramic. Ceramic doesn't scratch, Aluminium does't crack. Winner, just, Rolex. Bracelet: Rolex are better, but Seiko (eg MArinmaster) are very practical and designed for proper diving use. They easily adjust on the wrist over a wetsuit. The Rolex are a faff to adjust when working, but much nicer day-to-day. Winner Rolex. A working diver should really be on a strap anyway. Case: Both well finished. 904L scratches easily, but so what. Seiko more interesting designs and monobloc designs are He proof (genius). New Ever Brilliant steel is off the chart - amazing colour and quality. Seiko (hand) polishing and brushing is better than Rolex, but Seiko are thicker and can't compete with the Sub for wearability. But Sea-Dweller and Deepsea are both as thick as Seikos. Winner: Seiko Dial/face/hands: Seiko getting better with each new model. Rolex still more precise (even lume fill, marker positioning), Seiko generally less scratches and dust. Hands a tie for me (Seiko getting better, but some odd shapes and lume inconsistency). Rolex have very high quality faces (most people miss this). Rolex do a very good black face, although some Seiko Tunas are almost Vantaback in their bottomless matte blackness! Seiko often ruin their great dials with a hideous Prospex logo! To my eye, Rolex colours don't come close to the sophistication and subtlety of Seiko's. Winner, Rolex for marker precision. Subjective/X factor: I hate what Rolex has become - a luxury trinket, but they still make a great, reliable watch and each iteration is generally better than the last, if not necessarily prettier. But they are very clinical and machine made. Seiko are reinventing themselves and producing ever better product, that is hand finished. But, perversely the watch we all want from Seiko/GS - a refined and modernised 62MAS on a bracelet, they refuse to make. And while they wear their bigger size well, I think most people would welcome a smaller (39/40mm) dive watch from Seiko. Which is why my favourite all 'round dive watch is Rolex's 116600 Sea-Dweller 4k - best of all worlds. But for serious marine work, I'd take a 8L35 Tuna and for casual use, a 62MAS 8L35 derivative. And the one I'd never sell is the SLA033 Willard. Go figure!
Wow, I agree with you every step of the way, point by point! I got rid of both my Rolex watches a long time ago. I regret selling my classic Submariner, it was with me through a LOT of things all over the world. By the time I bought the GMT Master, they had become, as you say, a luxury trinket; I sold the soul-less thing soon after and didn't look back. Unfortunately, I missed out on the SLA033, but I love my gray dial Uemara edition.
It also works in reverse too. If you are in hold up and they start robbing people for their watches, when they get to the Seiko guy they just give him props and move on to the next guy.
Better yet the come looking thinking what s beauty must be high end swiss once they see seiko logo they think you poor hhhh silly people i actually once upon a time used to be that way until i caught the seiko bug.
So true. My co worker then saw a watch I was wearing and it was a seiko. She goes, "nice watch" then sees the brand.. "oh its a seiko, a Walmart brand.." lol
I dont think the reviewer is bias. It just pointing out what most people dont see about Seiko. Obviously some people in this comment doesn't have vast knowledge about watches (or only know Rolex). They thinking is a ridiculous to pit Seiko against Rolex. Well it is not. Seiko have vast range of watches. The top end range can compete with the best Swiss or German watchmaker out there. One point that is true though, you never lose money with Rolex if that's your thing (looking at watch as an investment). It takes money to own a Rolex but it takes a true watch enthusiast spirit to appreciate Seiko.
As soon as I saw the first side-by-side image, I had the Seiko in front by a mile! 😄 ... even if my friends think I'm on food stamps! 😆 Thanks for sharing this battle!
Right on! I remember when I first handled for an extended amount of time a submariner. I told studio 29 my first words were 'wow this is so overpriced' and they just said 2 words to me. "I know" lol
Yup you hit the nail on the head. I've had a Seiko sportura, now for about sixteen years. Best watch I ever bought, didn't cost the world. Great time keeper, and be honest, a watch is for telling you the time of day. 👍👍👍
I am a seiko fan but sad truth sheeps treat rolex logo is from heaven piece, nothing judged on rolex timepieces merits other than the logo and to little extent the thinner and smaller dial. Truth is those high ene seikos just have more soul and much better light play, finishing and always fly under the radar. My pick is always the high end seiko and i own 7 of them.
Being friends with Sanjay (Engineer Wannabe) already made me want to get the SLA055 (currently own the SPB187 and LOVE it) but this video may have tipped me over the edge. I know a lot of people think it's crazy that Seiko charges nearly 5K for this watch, but when you actually look at the watch for what it is, it's well worth the price IMHO. Excellent video as always!
Dude the more you have that SLA055 on the channel the better. Absolutely beautiful! It's a thumbs up to the Seiko for me. Mainly because of the price difference.
Thank you. First off I thought “not another Rolex video’ but am I glad I sat thru this one. I hope the SEIKO is still available in three months. And this one will be in the ocean ever day.
From the spec that you break-down, this seiko is not over-price in my opinion. It just common believe that seiko must be cheaper than it should be. As today more and more people share their experience of the watches their have through social media, it slowly reveals that many watches are not second to the rolex. That's the reason people undoubtly prefer brand like omega, tudor , etc and compare it with rolex. Lastly i really like the way your video show some detail of its spec and mechanism rather just claimed it is better/worse based on common believe.
I love Rolex (have an old Oyster I bought a long time ago). Over the past 7 years or so I have been buying Seiko. They are fabulous. Great dive watches - I agree with you on this.
Great review and head to head comparison. I have this Seiko's brother SLA075 which mine is not Ever Brilliant but is identical with everything else and love it. The hand finishing is spectacular! My 8L35 is running right at 12 seconds fast per day. I was shocked. That is what it has settled in at. When I first got it it was as high as 14 seconds fast. If I'm not mistaken the SLA075 and SLA073 are US releases only but I could be wrong. I know the SLA073 bracelet will fit all 4 pieces having the same exact cases. My SLA075 should have come with a bracelet I think. Awesome video man! Enjoyed!
great! the 8L is very easy to regulate watch my regulate swiss watch movements video and you can do it in 5 minutes or take it to a watchmaker, if you are not experienced and worried you hand will slip. th-cam.com/video/WL0f5LlViYc/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Escapement%26Watch probably will charge you 30 dollars only.
The joy over the design of the Seiko is comparatively short-lived and it will dawn on most people after owning it a couple of months maybe up to a year. Thatˋs where the Rolex shines, the design is made for the long run. Btw I owned a 114060 and a SLA023.
@@EscapementWatch well it is for the value if you ever want a different watch . Like i stated in my other reaction , i am not a Rolex fanboy and i believe Rolex is overpriced but i do not set the value , the market does . A Seiko like this does value at 2nd hand at 100S while a Rolex will go 10k$ .. you choose your value , but 1 will gain value while the other will lose it .
This. There is many great watches in world nut none of them approaching complexity of Rolex design. I can’t get enought of looking on models like Sub or Datejust. Design of these watches is so mature, clean and eternal like. Rolex create best looking watches ever.
I have owned the Submariner 114060 and currently own the SLA043. The Sub was the baddest tool watch on the planet. Now, while obviously still capable, it is a complete and total luxury watch. Once the honeymoon wore off, I didn't connect with it at all and moved it along. 055 wins for me
Everyone that sees a Rolex wonders if it’s real, and half the time they are fake! Buy a Rolex to impress others, and buy a Seiko Spring Drive to impress yourself
Very enjoyable comparison, well done! Of course Rolex is and always will be an epic brand, and they have so many amazing models. However, the width and breadth of Seiko truly is outstanding, and they will always have my utmost respect in almost all price ranges. Love them both, but would give the edge to Seiko due to versatility, breadth and overall quality. Plus, Seiko is the new black when compared to Rolex, celebrate Japan!🎉
I owned two Rolexes. One is sold but I still have a nice Saphire dial Roman Numerals Datejust in my collection. I also have 3 Seikos. Seiko is close to Rolex in many ways. For value, objectively speaking, there is no comparison. It's Seiko hands down.
OMG, you have just saved me!! I am on the waiting list for an Air-King but that will be cancelled tomorrow and I am going to push the button on a MM300…. 🙂
Curious to know if the Rolex was serviced in any way. It's hard to believe the amount of dust on the crystal and hands, I don't think I've ever seen this much and first thing I would suspect is bad service environment.
I've seen it on my rolex air king review and I show me trying to wipe it off. This sub has never been serviced its new from AD straight to grey as usual with 2022 warranty card. Most Rolex's I have examined have acceptable dust levels.
iron wristband looks better. but overal i prefer watchface of Seiko. if i had to pick one. i'd pick the rolex. sell it (great watch value ofcourse) then get the Seiko and have spare money
I like the Seiko more. It's more accessible, more beautiful and you don't have to deal with annoying Rolex ADs. Also no one knows what you are wearing, which is a plus for me.
Great video, that Seiko is gorgeous! I don’t know the lift angle of any of those movements, Seiko usually uses 53 degrees. I mention this because the only way you get a proper amplitud reading is by setting the right lift angle on the machine.
I was wondering if you might would not minding doing a review on the SLA073? I just bought this piece and would like to hear your review thoughts on the the only one out of the four identical SLA MM 200m 8L35s 42.6mm cases but two of course being ever brilliant steel. The SLA073 retails at $2,900 with impressive specs. I understand if you aren’t able to and are too busy. Thanks a bunch!
Wont be reviewing it due to time and availability in my area. (my AD did not stock it) But an 8L for 2900 and maybe a little discount is always a win! grats!
@@EscapementWatch Oh no. When In read your reply, it all the sudden hit me that I think I recall you are in Canada and I think the 073 is a US edition. My apologies! Thank you for responding!
Many agree with you. It is just me, I believe Seiko divers belong on rubber straps as they have in the past since day 1. So I didn't see it as important as most luxury buyers do! Similarly I think all those Subs on rubber look terrible! Crafter blue, everest etc... it looks so silly and gwady to me on a sub. Sub belongs on bracelet in my opinion. But going forward even if they come on different material strap/bracelet I'll find a way to grade them and compare. Do I rank the strap on its own merits? If its a great strap does it full marks? 10/10 or does it lose points because its not metal? Its hard to compare them. But if I were to grade them, the Rolex bracelet 10/10 and as silicone/rubber straps go, the Seiko's is very comfy and nice and thick, a bit long in size for pro divers, and would like ventilation holes so 8/10.
I used to love the idea of owning a rolex submariner my uncle bought one in the 60s when they were about £400 brand new ok we are talking about a different beast back then but the price now and back i recently bought a seiko prospex samurai prospex samurai samurai which i absolutely love and i also own a seiko prospex 62 mas reissue both dive certified and personally i would buy the tudor black bay over the rolex submariner
Yes the band should have been mentioned. But because I believe a Rolex belongs on a bracelet and a Seiko Diver belongs on a rubber strap, all was right in my mind. Also, the Rolex can be had with a date for same price, but I did not have one available at the time of filming.
If I had the money for my opinion to matter, I’d choose Omega>Seiko>Rolex. I daily an SRPD59, so I’m partial to price AND quality with Seiko, but I do have a couple of Omega and Seiko restorations on the bench. Rolex makes a great watch, but I’d say 75% of the price is just hype.
Great choice, a seiko lx would obviously beat both. I’d rather see a showdown between the Tudor pelagos with its adjustable bracelet and a seiko snr029.
Loved this. I’m just getting started in watches and have bought the Seiko SPB165J presage which I chose over the Tissot Gentlemen because it wore better and I just enjoyed looking at it far more. With all the Seiko haters out there I thought I’d possibly made a mistake. But I’ve learnt that it’s silly to have others opinions steal the joy that a particular watch gives you.
During your narration of the metallurgy of the Springs and steel, It sounding like you were going to say, the spring is made of, “Vibranium from Wakanda” out of Africa. A very rare unbreakable spring metal. The Vibrainium, is what the original, “Captain America’s Shield” is made of, as well as, Conan The Barbarians original, “Sword” as wielded by Conan Schwarzenegger himself. And he’s still living today in, California. Prefer Seiko with a stainless band, it has proved reliable throughout my dive career. In a body recovery dive job of a helicopter pilot who crashed his helicopter in the Ocean, from an offshore oil rig. The pilot was wearing a, “Rolex watch” on his wrist. As expensive as the Rolex was, it didn’t do dam a thing for him during the crash. But it still was running at a depth of at least 280’feet.
For the same price, I mean, the Rolex is obvious. The 10K difference? Seiko all the way. But even still, the Sub is classic, but doesn't really speak to me. Jeremy Clarkson said something that I think applies well to Rolex when he mentioning a Ferrari. He said something like, recent Ferrari models are not that good looking, but we think they are good looking because they are Ferrari. Rolex is a fine brand and they make damn decent watch, but the crown logo amplifies the hype.
The only thing stopping me from buying high end Seiko is the reports that they won't fix/service your 10/20 year old watch because it's discontinued. Omega will restore pretty much anything, Rolex less so but there are at least many watchmakers that can. Grand Seiko? No one has parts, no one can fix them, not even Seiko. Also, what I don't like with Grand Seiko is that most of their models are almost copies of Rolex or Omega models. The dress models are pretty much Seamasters (even the bracelets are 1-on-1 copies), and the GMT (sbgn003) is a blatant Explorer II copy. That makes it an expensive knockoff with amazing build quality, a real shame. And service intervals are 3 years for mechanical (9s, whichs needs to go to Japan for servicing) and 3-4 years for springdrive as per the manual. That's 10 years for Rolex and Omega.
I have a Grand Seiko from 1960 doing 0s seconds a day in 2 main positions. Running amazing. I did not have issue finding a watchmaker to do a simple service. And don't buy the service manual guidelines. Spring drive gear train has very low stress. Many people on the grand seiko forum's go 10-15 years on average and still no service and doing perfect timing.
Nice review 👍 Was lucky to have got the call from my AD for the Submariner 124060 - good enough to be a one and done watch. Also love Seiko and have a custom SKX Ninja+ YM.
Good video. Like your enthusiasm. I’ve had the Rolex oyster perpetual many years, so generally never think about watches anymore. Get many envied looks by both watch enthusiasts and non. Thanks for upload !
i hope for Seiko they become that popular like Rolex because i think they deserve it, that Seiko watch is amazing and hand work should be always better paid. But yes there you go, this Seiko seems better working then the rolex, but i think people will still go more for a Rolex then a Seiko, the Brand is just so popular. The people they know watches will go for a Seiko or both XD.
I could afford any watch I wanted. I wear a seiko and don’t have a Rolex. When I see someone wearing a Rolex, I think “sucker.” And I don’t get people buying diving watches that never see water, it’s like buying a jeep that never sees dirt.
Rolex is an excellent high quality well made watch but that does not justify the current exhorbitant prices and certainly not the artificial bubble created by the ADs, grey market and flippers. In the past wearing a Rolex conveyed good taste and success. Today it merely says the owner spent way too much for a watch in order to showoff.
The Seiko will get everyone's attention and maybe ask about it, well, that's a new one. The Seiko although its a really good brand and possibly the best from Asia, but its by no means on par with the Rolex not even with your high praise I'm afraid. The position of the crown is already arguable and I did spot a major imperfection with the Seiko's second hand where the lume is applied, seems like the lines are really uneven.
I collect solid gold swiss luxury watches, but refuse to buy the subpar quality Rolex hype watches. I don't wear anything as cheap as Seiko watches, but would take a Seiko any day over a Rolex. This video only helps to justify my thinking lol.
Except for resale, any number of Seiko's have crushed Rolex for years. My $15 GShock in '80 kept better time than my parents his n her Oysters. And it wasn't close.
Dude, first video I see from you and I learned so many new things and secret details I never heard of, even after almost 4 years of diving in this watch world. Top quality footage, great content and entertaining narrative. You have just earned a new subscriber.
Seiko all day. I could’ve gotten a no-date sub but I ended up buying a Pelagos 42. Better depth resistance, titanium, awesome clasp, in-house movement with better power reserve, etc. Lume is also cooler IMO.
The 055 hugs the wrist better but is larger. But its also thinner as well. The 043 is tall with its boxed sapphire 14.1mm. Both watches are made in the new GS Studio, and the finishing is the same on them. And I sadly sold the 043 because the height on the wrist started to bug me! Plus shinny bezels never really my thing. My watch fund for another sla is enough now to get this 055 but I might get a GS instead. But I'm being patient or waiting for a new thinner sla line. Still undecided! Thanks for watching!
@@EscapementWatch Thanks for the reply. I don’t know what Seiko was thinking putting the date window between 4 and 5. It looks cluttered and imbalanced. Take a que from Omega, Tissot and others and put it at the bottom for perfect symmetry, or the traditional 3 position, or eliminate it. But placing it almost upside down looks ridiculous.

Too cool!
Flat endlink bor? or you found one that fits it? the gs studio in Japan would be a dream come true to visit!!!
@@EscapementWatch it is a strapco bor. Fits this one fine. Bought the same one in 19 mm. Doesn't fit my 039, or 043. The last link is too wide to fit either watch. 🙄

If money was no object I'd still not buy a Rolex. But I'd definitely get the Seiko.
Yeah I guess I wouldn't either, unless I want to check off boxes. "submariner" check! But its just something I had say to ease any Rolex hater comments at the end because it lost.
SEIKO for ever as an engineer

The gold and platinum used isn’t even worth mentioning, since it’s so little. Maybe $50.
I also have a sla043. Stunning watch! Quite special.. It is kind of my grail diver. Not interested in all the hype of Rolex branding on the new watches.
I do think that a vintage Rolex might be interesting though.
@@Koishishibaman Lucky, lucky men!

Yes, but they’ll also assume your Seiko is cheaper than the fake Rolex
Yes really the most of the rolex used by people are fake
In 1972, a steel Submariner cost 285 USD; that's about 2800 USD today. Take into account a better movement today, the sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel and some white gold - let's round that up to $3800. That's what a Sub is actually worth so use that number when you compare the Rolex to the Seiko.
And that’s what I have been saying for years. It’s a great watch and that’s what is worth. Not $10,000 at an AD or $13,000 used on e bay with scratches
You're forgetting the fact that manufacturing costs have plummeted since the 70s, I doubt it costs Rolex more than 1,000 to make each submariner.
@@BoleDaPole you’re correct. I wonder what the exact amount is but yes around there
This BATTLE was fun to make! been fighting the "C" V1rus all week but still wanted to get this out.
Yeah the seconds hand lume is rough on the seiko good eye!

By by far the most compelling comparison between the Seiko Marinemaster and Rolex. Didn't think I wanted a Seiko until seeing this vid...
I'm a practical guy, I buy watches for what they are, not for social status. The Rolex isn't even worth half of its MSRP.
That's a good way to think, and buy watches!
The Rolex has one huge problem. That being, it is the most homaged / cloned / faked watch in the world, and to be totally honest, it doesn't do a thing for me. I'd take the Seiko.
yeah it has no X FACTOR for sure.
Or u could take the Rolex sell it and buy ur self 4-5 of these Seikos
Imitation is the greatest sign of flattery or something like that!
Even if You would get Rolex anyway most will think its just fake ...... Seiko on the other hand is always original.
Seiko watches have this special ability to create a bond with u when u own one
Well said! Seiko def needs to regulate their 8L for reception among watch enthusiasts to improve.
@@EscapementWatch Imagine this was regulated! You would have to have rocks in your head not to buy an SLA model over anything else.
Hand finishing
Better finish than Rolex
Fully in-house hand assembled movement
With cosc accuracy
Boom
Your not wrong. Also, each piece of the movement is individually hardened for longevity.
Yes possible
Too bad Seiko haven’t figured out how to make a good bracelet that matches the Swiss, even at Grand Seiko. Once they figured it out, I’ll be getting one asap. Best case finishing in the business. Thanks for the review.
Indeed, what the hell is it with Seiko and their crap bracelets? Even the straps are rubbish, you have to get a 5000USD watch from them to get a curved end fitted rubber strap...
@@PoltergeistWorks Omega make the ONLY bracelet I'd consider keeping on a watch. I replaced by Submariner bracelet. This is a non-issue.
@@PoltergeistWorks For me, that is.
This is so true. Their watchmaking is already good enough, they should seriously focus on bracelets for a while.
Seiko knows they can't beat Rolex, nor do they want to. Seiko is as good at the game as Rolex. Each does their own thing and they both do it very well. I wouldn't want to be in a world without either.
Beat? And what determines a win? Seiko takes no seat to Rolex...
My objective (and long!) observation of the two brands' dive watches is as follows (based on 4 8L36 divers, 2 8L55 divers and 4 Rolex divers):
Dive heritage: Rolex have been at dive watches longer, but Seiko ARE pro dive watches.
In use (as in professional diving, forestry, farming, mountaineering, motorcycling (including off road), cycling, shooting:
Both very tough, both will scratch, ding and suffer damage to bezel mechanisms, bracelets will eventually wear out, but both will run and run, reliably with only periodic service (Seiko cheaper, but less convenient).
Winner Seiko
Design: Both are pretty conservative, but Seiko does more variety.
Winner: Seiko
Dial/face/hands: Seiko getting better with each new model.
Go figure!
AMAZING comment! Thanks for sharing your point of view. Really valuable addition when owners of both watches add their input. Thanks again!

@@EscapementWatch Great points 👍
I used to love the idea of owning a rolex submariner my uncle bought one in the 60s when they were about £400 brand new ok we are talking about a different beast back then but the price now and back i recently bought a seiko prospex samurai prospex samurai samurai which i absolutely love and i also own a seiko prospex 62 mas reissue both dive certified and personally i would buy the tudor black bay over the rolex submariner
I just wish that Seiko was a bit smaller. The SPB143 case beefed up movement would be a better comparison I think
Yeah I would own one if it was smaller for sure!
This Seiko is beautiful 🤩
I have three Rx and three Sk. Both brands I like. And I would agree that Sk is highly money saving for watch enthusiasts like me.
Why no mention on the band in your decision? Or the date on the Seiko vs no date on Rolex. You did a great job.
Yes the band should have been mentioned. But because I believe a Rolex belongs on a bracelet and a Seiko Diver belongs on a rubber strap, all was right in my mind. Also, the Rolex can be had with a date for same price, but I did not have one available at the time of filming.
@@EscapementWatch makes sense and thanks for the explanation. All good here.
What is the reference number for the Seiko in this video?

Buy a watch and be happy. Lots of good produced. Had Seiko, have Rolex. Loved both.
The more I watch this the more I want that SLA model.
For me it is Seiko definitely, even if I had extra for Rolex, I'd get another other piece, maybe an Omega.
Tudor BB58 is a diver with vintage style modern movement. Now the sub looks to plain for me and i get 2 watches for the same price.
I love the Rolex Explorer II….but, thats the ONLY Rolex I like. The Seiko here holds its own. Good video. I enjoyed it.
Oh that's a great one. Hard not to like Rolex. My favorite is the basic and most simplest oyster perpetual. Anyways thank you for watching
Nice review 👍
Was lucky to have got the call from my AD for the Submariner 124060 - good enough to be a one and done watch. Also love Seiko and have a custom SKX Ninja+ YM.
Nice one!
Great comparison! Thanks. Does Seiko offer a SLA055 with a black dial?
Unfortunately they do not. Maybe on the next limited edition run in a couple years from now
Nothing says its a Rolex, like a Rolex....
I could afford any watch I wanted. I wear a seiko and don’t have a Rolex. When I see someone wearing a Rolex, I think “sucker.”
And I don’t get people buying diving watches that never see water, it’s like buying a jeep that never sees dirt.
One thing that Rolex will never have…. Spring drive. Long live SNR
Rolex needs nothing from Seiko .
I have an oyster perpetual and not a show-off. Just like good quality.
There is no wait list but there is a purchase history at least in Singapore
The Seiko will get everyone's attention and maybe ask about it, well, that's a new one. The Seiko although its a really good brand and possibly the best from Asia, but its by no means on par with the Rolex not even with your high praise I'm afraid. The position of the crown is already arguable and I did spot a major imperfection with the Seiko's second hand where the lume is applied, seems like the lines are really uneven.
Excelente 👌 👌 información
I collect solid gold swiss luxury watches, but refuse to buy the subpar quality Rolex hype watches. I don't wear anything as cheap as Seiko watches, but would take a Seiko any day over a Rolex. This video only helps to justify my thinking lol.
Is this your first battle video? Keep them coming. How about Daytona vs Speedmaster next?
Don't have access to Omega yet working on it. We did battles long ago this the 5th I think?
Except for resale, any number of Seiko's have crushed Rolex for years. My $15 GShock in '80 kept better time than my parents his n her Oysters. And it wasn't close.
Dude, first video I see from you and I learned so many new things and secret details I never heard of, even after almost 4 years of diving in this watch world. Top quality footage, great content and entertaining narrative. You have just earned a new subscriber.
“You meet someone at work. They see - you have a Seiko. They think you’re on food stamps” - LMAO 🤣 🤣 🤣
Seiko all day.
I could’ve gotten a no-date sub but I ended up buying a Pelagos 42. Better depth resistance, titanium, awesome clasp, in-house movement with better power reserve, etc. Lume is also cooler IMO.
What’s your take on the SLA055 vs the SLA043 that you have?
The 055 hugs the wrist better but is larger. But its also thinner as well. The 043 is tall with its boxed sapphire 14.1mm. Both watches are made in the new GS Studio, and the finishing is the same on them. And I sadly sold the 043 because the height on the wrist started to bug me! Plus shinny bezels never really my thing. My watch fund for another sla is enough now to get this 055 but I might get a GS instead. But I'm being patient or waiting for a new thinner sla line. Still undecided! Thanks for watching!
Maybe the next battle should be between a Seiko SLA model and your favored Tudor BlackBay 58.
For me the Rolex wins hands down because it is relatively uncluttered and therefore looks relatively more elegant.
interesting since the rolex has tons of text on the dial below the 12 and above the 6!
Love the Seiko, but the Sub would still be my choice
fair enough
What a cracking review ,how very nicely done
Glad you enjoyed it
Having both collections, I tend to agree with you.
"EXCELLENT" comparison, fair enough. Spot on! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
@@EscapementWatch very much, so unique and fun to watch! 0% boring factor in your videos. Keep it up
This watch is very expensive but this is very gorgeous.
Yes all Rolex's are expensive!!!
Rolex is not a watch, its a marketing exercise
Well done! Loved the battle and the outcome. Great research regarding the patent and history of the movement. Enjoyed as always
Glad you enjoyed it!
Was the seiko specially caliberated? All my seikos are really off
No this is how it came from the factory.
You never mentioned the Seiko model name, or the model number. I have no idea what you compared the Rolex to.
SLA055 there is a full review of it on this channel
@@EscapementWatch Thanks for the reply. I don’t know what Seiko was thinking putting the date window between 4 and 5. It looks cluttered and imbalanced. Take a que from Omega, Tissot and others and put it at the bottom for perfect symmetry, or the traditional 3 position, or eliminate it. But placing it almost upside down looks ridiculous.
