V14E3: October in the Sawtooth Mountains

  • Adventure is afoot in the Sawtooth Mountains, amidst beautiful fall colors. This week, I set off in the Jeep to explore Idaho's rugged backcountry. Trouble with Orangie escalates as I neglect the issues that arose the previous week, in episode V14E2. Where the forest road ends, I hike deep into the mountains to experience a picturesque alpine lake. Features a brief rendezvous with Dirt Sunrise, a field repair over pizza, a stroll through Ketchum, and a look back at our first day with the Revel.

Welcome to Idaho!! While driving yesterday on I-84 near Boise out of the corner of my eye I saw a orange Jeep with white top and orange maxtrax and told my wife…that has to be Chris. We love exploring the Sawtooth’s, so much beauty and history. Hope you resolved your battery issue.

I had an issue similar to your battery one for several years on my Jeep. Eventually figured out that I had a loose negative connection on my battery from where I improperly installed my winch. It looked seated but was slightly loose. The key wouldn’t respond once it clicked. I’d have to disconnect the terminal and reattach. Everything would be good after that. Been watching you for nearly 4 years every week and this is the first time I think I’ve commented on a video. Keep it up. I really enjoy following you on your adventures. Everyone who sees the wilds of Idaho for the first time is blown away with good cause. It seems more remote, big, rugged and beautiful than most any other place. I have not been there but watch as many videos about the state as I can. Even though I live remotely in northern New Hampshire, Idaho is a state where I'd like to live but will not get there for that, because I'm 78 years old, too settled in NH. I hope all the hordes of people moving there from CA and elsewhere don't destroy the beauty and lifestyle.

Agree with your statement on batteries. Best ones are what you can find when you need them. This is why i never bought into the deep cycle/AGM craze. I buy cheapy lead acid part store batteries because I can find them in any part store or walmart in the country! They work fine in my genesis dual battery system.

Hi Chris when I worked at a car dealership in the 70s there was a guy that came by selling those tire repair kits To demonstrate how well his product work he must’ve had 100 holes drilled into his tire Including the sidewall and then repaired by his kits. His tire look like a porcupine. no leaks very impressive

Chris after seeing you repair that puncture miles from anywhere I’d say anyone who ventures off road should carry a similar repair kit, if nothing else just for the peace of mind it affords…
I’m still amazed by the abuse tires receive off pavement. The sharp edges, side loads etc. I wouldn’t want to be reincarnated as an off road tire…

Just a recommendation here from someone who has a well built overland vehicle and uses it 150 days/nights a year.Optima is a great choice, but the blue top batteries by the same company are marine batteries and are deep cycle which is what you need-they also have additional terminals for your switch gear.I’ve run these for close to 20 years now and they have never let me down and can be deep cycled(all the way down)and always come back up with a charge.

I sure hope you bought the insurance policy when you bought those new expensive tires.
It appears that the area of the puncture was in, is called a non-repairable area.
While plugs will work, they're not considered a permanent repair, and most tire shops have liabilities that do not allow them to repair tires when the puncture is too close to the sidewall.

The new one if you can call it new is now over 6 years old. It goes against the old adage of what is the right battery. Have you ever checked out the red top Optima? I also hear they are really good. Hi Chris. I have the exact same configuration you do in my JKUR. Dual Optima yellow top batteries that are more than 3 and 1/2 years old. I do have trouble starting the Jeep once in a while, but it's because the terrible factory starter battery positive terminal connector won't stay very tight. Sometimes it even slides up the battery terminal. When I wiggle it and do my best to tighten it down it usually lasts from a few weeks to a few months. But the core problem for me isn't the batteries, it's the factory connector on the positive terminal of the starter battery.

No way on this earth are they going to keep this van for 10 years, let alone the full 20 years of the loan. Lol, maybe they would have broken up by then even.

@@stoneofverbosity I am sure she is helping pay for it. I mean, she is the one staying in it majority of the time. She had to move out of her apartment. She was paying over $2,000 a month where she was staying. So, I am sure she is paying that to stay in this van. Also, Chris used to travel only with his Jeep which was paid off. But now he has a long and hence you can call it a mortgage because that loan is 20 years! Some people finance their houses only for 15 years. But he is financing a car for 20 years! Wow! So you best believe the loan on that car is probably over $150,000. Then payment are about $1,500 to $2,000. So, I am sure both of them must be footing that bill. She cannot be staying there and not paying atleast $1,000 or $1,500. I mean, it will be a one sided thing if Chris has it only in his name and she is only a girlfriend. Well, they will probably broke up someday. So, you think she will just walk away after having helped Chris achieved his life goals and paid off a car? Nah! It don't work like that. She cannot give up on her own interests and things to help Chris grow his channel and help him pay off the car only for them to break up when everything is paid off or he has a ton of subscribers. So, I am sure she has a good investment into that car and it is written down as a contract between them. Because if she is just a girlfriend with no contract, then she will be the one at the losing end when they breakup. They are not married, hence this is very temporal whether they are in love or not. And during this process, she is paying on a car which belongs to someone else. Bad move. So, I am sure she must protect herself somehow. Trust me, relationships are good but you have no idea how or if or when they will end. So, protect yourself during the so called relationship.

“Gee those tire plug kits really work great”........especially if you’re miles from the nearest shop, that’s what they’re intended for, but it’s not very smart to drive around with a nail or screw in your tire especially a big sheet metal screw . I wouldn’t drive one of my rigs to town and back without getting the tire repaired properly. The farther you drive the more you increase the chances of doing unrepairable damage to your tire . The more damage you do to the area the greater the risk of getting air between the plies or cap of the tire which can cause catastrophic failure down the road. I much prefer having the tire dismounted and patched from the inside, that better seals the air from the plies of the casing. I’ve seen shops that do both together.

    • @timtemple8953
      @timtemple8953 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Sigh...its a screw..in this particular case on the outer tread, getting very little pressure applied. Once it's there...it's there. Yes in this case the large head grabbed something and got pulled out....OMG what will we ever do... Oh, my bad, we plug the tire...and it's fine. There is literally no increased chance of a non-repairable tire. When you remove the screw...or the screw is removed for you...the chance of fixing that is laterally the exact same. You try to true the damage(which is pretty much circular because there was a round screw that was ripped from there) and then you plug it. That plug will most likely last for the tread-life of the tire. Really and truly the only time a plug in the tread of a tire is going to fail is if the original damage clipped a cord in the tire. At that point or any other "real" issue, the repaired area will swell up like a balloon. So yes, "these tire plug kits really work great". If there an actual issue it will present with a very bumpy ride and not some imagined catastrophic failure. "Air between plies"..."cap of the tires'...different tire world than I live in...

Yes, I'd prefer to see 3-4 years out of a deep cycle battery, but as we well know Chris is VERY HARD on things lol and maintenance is often a formality.

I follow Dirt sunrise and it was a little bit strange to see them pop up in your weekly video, I thought they were just entering Alaska, but I was wrong. The channel is far behind schedule but that doesn’t matter for me. Love both of the channels, keep up the amazing work and explore!!! Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱❤️🇺🇸💪✌️👌👍🥇

You didn't even wet the tire to check for leaks. Lol. You just wet the tip of the plug.

Just out of curiosity, why don’t you order the batteries from Amazon and pick them up at a locker or drop location? Also works great for almost forgot birthday gifts.

Accessibility seemed to be the issue in this particular circumstance. Electrical issues are rather urgent and unnerving.

I plug them when I find them. Sometimes if the offending intruder comes out (or all the way in), the hole becomes difficult to find

Ugh don't do Optima. They aren't what they used to be since they sent their manufacturing out of the country. Odyssey batteries ftw.

Love your videos but I dunno, going to a remote location with a sketchy battery situation and a tire that you know has a screw in it? Glad they didn't turn out leave you stranded but that doesn't seem like a good overlanding practice. Keep those great videos coming!
