Playstation Gameplay - Ridge Racer

Riiiidge Racer !!!
Being a launch title for the Playstation, this port of Namco's awesome arcade racer is, nowadays, very rough around the edges. Now, it is by no means a bad game, in fact it was a pretty nice little game back in the day. However, this port hasn't aged very well, especially in the car handling department.
While the game is very similar to it's arcade big brother, its cars handle very differently. Drifting in this game slows you down after exiting your drift. Exiting the drifting without losing too much momentum is very difficult. The handling and physics are very twitchy and even if you've played the Arcade version, it will take some time to get used to its awkward physics. Thus why I was struggling quite a lot in this video.
Nonetheless, Ridge Racer was a great showcase of what the Playstation could do, the game sold really well and it gave Sony a great start in the console market. In this day and age though, this port is not worth playing other than for perhaps the extra cars and extra races. Stick to the Arcade version !

Personally don't dig the emulators Vaseline Smear Anti-Aliasing, but it looks grand when upscaled without it. With upscaling and MSAA applied, it looks flat like an oil painting.
That said, I miss this series, shame they crapped the bed with later releases and then those mobile versions.

I miss the series too. 2024 is the 30th Anniversary of the series, can we get something Namco please? I wouldn't mind a compilation even

Yeah but only as it loads. If you shoot all the enemies, you'll unlock new cars !

It was an early PS1 game, it was acceptable for the time
