My local arcade had this game, and it happened to have its volume turned up high. The first time I put a quarter in, I knew this game wasn't joking around when it blared that GLORIOUS opening music through its speakers. I still get goosebumps when I hear it. Too bad it isn't there anymore...at least they still have OutRunners.
Man, I sank sooooo much money into these machines, especially the sit-down cabinets. I must have singlehandedly paid the arcade's electric bill with the criminal amounts of money I lost to this game alone. This brought me back! Now, where's Power Drift?!
Ah, Turbo Outrun. The game that gave a bad name to American interstates, high-performance engine modifications, and Ferarri passengers. This wasn't too popular where I lived, and I don't remember anyone ever getting very far. Keeping the rubber side down in the original Outrun was hard enough; add the Turbo mechanic and _very_ pushy traffic and you have a recipe for continuous vehicular manglings. If you ask me, the fact that the white car driver never suffered these mishaps was more than enough reason to stick with him! Honestly, the thing I remember most fondly about this is having more music to select in Special Tours.

I was just able to beat the sega genesis port (much much worse looking, this arcade version looks awesome) of this game on an emulator for the first time after 30 or so tries. It's actually shocking how fun the old school outrun games are to play. I played Outrun 2 on a PS2 emulator and it looks much better but not nearly as fun somehow. The only reason I can think of for not having done Outrun 3 already after 20 years is that Ferrari is demanding too much money, but if that's the case, screw Ferrari, just do another car. I would prefer to see a 911 anyway.
