When you sing, some people can't necessarily hear themselves compared to how other people hear them. For example, you think you sing good, but if you were to hear yourself from someone else's ears, you are going to sound different. The recording doesn't do anything to your voice. You just don't realize how bad (or sometimes good) you are actually singing. Thus being why some people put a finger in their ear to hear themselves on a high note.
