  • The nine muses of Greek mythology are the goddesses of song, dance, music, and poetry and were among the most important deities of the ancient Greek pantheon as the source of inspiration for poets. The most common and widespread belief was that the nine muses were the daughters of the Olympian god Zeus and the titan goddess of memory, Mnemosyne (which makes sense as the muses were also regarded as goddesses of knowledge who retained the knowledge of all that had come to pass).
The nine muses are Kalliope, the chief muse and responsible for epic poetry and rhetoric (and also known as the mother of gifted lyre player Orpheus), Kleio the goddess of history, Erato the goddess of erotic poetry and singing, Ourania the goddess of astronomy, Thaleia the goddess of comedy, Melpomene the goddess of tragedy, Euterpe the goddess of lyric poetry, Polymnia the goddess of religious hymns to the gods, and Terpsichore the goddess of dance.

Here in Mexico, we have the Mexica and the Mayan Gods! Is very difficult to find the Mesoamerican counterpart of the Greco-Roman Muses!

I wish they would teach this us in elementary skol, like this stuff is so interesting. To even think that people took these as sacred and now we can talk aboit it from secular perspective is just amazing

Well I just learned today, The Muse Melpomene is painted in The Library of Congress in DC!
Accurate and eerie. She is the muse of Tragedy.
And if it isn’t already clear that politics are nothing more than Theater. The most high stakes theater, equaling tragedy .
    It blew my mind!

I recently discovered the "Show transcript" feature; it's on the drop-down three-dot button menu. This is great because closed captions (I'm hard of hearing) sometimes obscure on-screen information. Now, I know this feature is not unique to your videos. However, I did notice that your transcripts are not marked as "auto-generated." If that means you have taken the time and effort to make sure that the transcription is verbatim (sometimes, auto-generated quality leaves something to be desired), then I thank you even more for these fabulous videos.

Thank you, Kelly. The Muses tickle my sense of inspiration like on one else. They manifest as whispers in the ears of all those who evoke them.

The first verse of Homer's Odyssey.
Ἄνδρα μοι ἔννεπε, Μοῦσα, πολύτροπον...= Tell me about the man, Musa, the man of many ways...
From Musa the word Museum ,In antiquity the museum was described as a place dedicated to the worship of the Muses. This means that the arts, letters, music, poetry, philosophy and dance were cultivated in this area.

Maybe the three and then nine muses are two distinct groups: one group of three and some other group of nine; expressions of yet other gods.
