  • Short drive from my local supermarket to my home in my 330xi with an ESS Tuning Stage 2 Supercharger installed. Roughly 340hp.
    The car:
    -2005 BMW 330xi
    -Stage 2 ESS Tuning Supercharger
    -K&N Cold Air intake
    -Scorpion Exhaust - Resonator removed
    Had an external mic placed right above the exhaust pipe on the back of the car. Rather exaggerated sound, the car wasn't really this loud, and a lot of wind noise.

    By the way, did you notice any compressor surge, funny sounds, or any damage because of the lack of a bypass valve on the kit? I heard a bypass valve is necessary to prevent damage to the engine and supercharger when you let off the throttle.

      With the automatic you can still supercharge it but you have to stick with the Stage 1 kit, if we're talking about ESS Tuning's options. The TS1 kit gives a 7 psi boost and about 320hp.
      I never got the chance to get mine on a dyno, none in the area where I live, before I sold it, so not sure what the final whp was.

    How much boost were you running here ? Stock engine internals, or did you do a rebuild ? Intercooler ? Water/methanol injection ?

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      8psi boost. Stock engine internals. That's the max boost before you have to consider cams, lower compression pistons etc. Kit comes with an intercooler, although not a large one which was fine, zero temperature problems. Had a CAI, stock headers, deleted resonators and a Scorpion muffler. No external injections. Kit came with high flow fuel injectors but that's it.

  • @TheTribal88

    Hi Perry, loving this car honestly. Got the 330 xi touring AWD 6speed manual myself and just talking to them now about the installation. I wanted to ask, did you choose the scorpion muffler for any specific reason? Would there be other exhaust solutions that you would have recommend over that? Was this just muffler or full catback actually? Also, which performance clutch do you think would be best for this car?

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scorpion muffler was just for the sound of it. Researched here on TH-cam. It was just the muffler and then I also deleted the resonators. There's a few options out there for full catback systems but I don't feel they'll be of much benefit unless you're thinking of going all out with cams and such. The benefit in breathing won't be enough to really notice otherwise. I was initially thinking of going with the UCC clutch for this car. As far as clutches go, just make sure it's rated for 400 lb-ft of torque or more and you should be good to go....literally!

    • @TheTribal88
      @TheTribal88 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perry Wolf thanks for the reply. Indeed ive been looking at full exhaust systems too but often sites fail to clarify if it will fit a touring as well, or only the limo. Will need to keep researching that. The muffler is a nice and affordable solution for sure, what i fear though is losing the sound of the V6. Thats why im thinking to start with ess V2 and CAI only to see how that sounds, and then take it from there later on. What do you think?

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      IW - In my opinion, I think you'll be more than happy with it and the CAI gives it a nice sound in the cab. The stock exhaust will keep up without a problem and would simply keep your car more of a sleeper. I only put the Scorpion muffler on to get more volume out of it, I personally liked "hearing" the power! 😎

      ESS has given me a rather spicey quote (I can't install it myself) of up to $15k in total. Seems like a lot for 8-10 hours work if the piece costs about $7000. I'm really unsure if it's worth that money.. Could get a CAI for 60 bucks and just drive in 3 gear all time and it would give me the sound and the sick acceleration. Decisions.. decisions..

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      IW - Any chance you can get installation quotes from other local shops? That's really steep. I wouldn't pay more than $1500-$2000 for install and that's liberal. $8000 is way too much. If you can, look me up on Facebook, send a friend request and I'll send you a copy of the installation manual. perry.wolf1 on Facebook.

    i dont understand this upgrade .. when I put the turbo in the atmosphere , so I want it to go from low revs about 2-3 thousand and not that I'm going to go with it like no turbo if this engine goes well even without a turbo from 4,000 rpm ( translated via google, sorry for the mistakes )

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is where a supercharger is beneficial in comparison to a turbo charger. A supercharger is belt driven off of the engine and starts producing boost at lower revolutions. A turbo charger is run off of the exhaust gas flow and takes a little longer to spool up and add boost. This supercharger starts giving good boost right from 2000rpm.

  • @noahk1958
    @noahk1958 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    How much of a horsepower increase do you think you gained out of your upgrades? I have an 04 330xi and without even realizing I was looking at the same upgrades you've already installed.

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ESS Tuning states on their web site 345hp. I never did get around to getting it dynoed but the forums concede ESS's figures are pretty much accurate. Ya, I decided to go this route because I figured if I traded the 330xi in on an M3 to get the same kind of hp I'd likely be spending another $10K above trade in value anyway. Spending $6800 and keeping the all-wheel-drive seemed like a decent way to go! If you plan on racing it a bit, even stop light drag races, you might want to consider a clutch upgrade. With the ESS Tuning TS2 system your stock clutch can put up with everything you deal it except a dropped clutch from a stand still. If you launch at about 2-3K rpm then floor it once rolling you'll do fine. Just don't try and drop the clutch from 4K rpm up.

    • @noahk1958
      @noahk1958 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Perry Wolf Thanks for all the info! I will definitely look into a clutch going forward, your build right now is great. I see it the same way when it comes to the m3, so with my xi I plan on getting a lowered suspension and then making upgrades so, like yours, it'll surpass m3 performance. Did you install the supercharger yourself by the way? How much was it?

    • @noahk1958
      @noahk1958 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Perry Wolf also, on top of what I already said just to clarify, you gained 345 hp or you're pushing 345 hp? It might sound like a foolish question, but I'm still learning

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Noah Karch, no problem. It's about a 90hp increase over stock. My car, being the M Sport package was rated stock at 255hp. Final horsepower is 345hp. Cost was in my first comment, $6800 for the ESS Tuning TS2 Supercharger running at 8psi. I installed it myself following their installation manual very carefully. Their manual is very thorough and step by step. It took me about 5 to 6 days to install, working on it only 1 to 2 hrs a day. You could install it in a day if you dedicated your time to it. However, because I had to send my ECU to ESS in Arizona to be flashed. It worked out perfectly. I finished the install only a day or two before my ECU came back. I have a 2002 automatic 330xi... You can only get the TS1 kit with an auto right? Still kinda crazy since i was sure i had read the transmission couldn't take more than 280-300hp

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zach Mockett - The tranny can handle it, the clutch is so-so, can't handle a dropped clutch start with the AWD but if you're rolling already it can handle everything dished out to it. You're right though, I heard ESS Tuning won't even sell the TS2 to you if you have the automatic.

    • @zachmockett7566
      @zachmockett7566 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perry Wolf interesting. Any idea how much PSI the supercharger is good for? Could just get a local tuner shop to do some upgrades to the TS1 kit. In theory, the clutch (torque converter), input shaft, and valve body would need to be replaced with stronger/reinforced versions in order to make more power without worrying about doing a hard launch.

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zach Mockett - The supercharger can easily handle 15psi or so, maybe even more. That's what the TS3 kit pumps out, 14.5psi. Each kit is just a smaller pulley. However, the TS3 kit comes with lower compression pistons which is definitely something you want to consider if you're going to consider more than 8-9psi boost as these are fairly high compression engines. As far as transmissions go, there's a possibility you could source an automatic off of an M3 of the same year if it fits the M54B30 motor. Other than that, not sure what you'd have to do in that end. With that said, if your looking at putting that kind of money into it you might just want to consider buying a used M3 and hoping it up a little. I went with the supercharger because at the time, with trade in, I'd still have to fork out $10-$12k to get an M3 of the same year, ('05), compared to $8k CAD for the supercharger. So for me it was a no brainer.

    • @zachmockett7566
      @zachmockett7566 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      An M3 is far too expensive. I got my 330xi for $4200CAD in Sept 2016. I'm not looking for big power just yet, in fact if I was to ever find a reasonable chassis (dreaming of an e36 or z4) I'd probably source out a new drivetrain all together to build that car instead. The 330xi is a wonderful daily and i hope to keep it a very long time... Either as a daily sleeper or just a stock ( + suspension + exhaust ) daily.

    What else was done besides the stuff listed? To make the supercharger work well

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the awesome part, nothing else extra was done. Nor was the CAI and exhaust necessary. However, as part of the installation the only extra thing you need to do is send your ECU to ESS Tuning for them to flash it with the correct engine mapping etc.
      What I did was send them my ECU just before starting my install. I then took my time with the installation, following their instruction manual as best I could, just putting in a couple hours a day. It only takes about 10 hours total to install. Anyway, just as I was finishing the mechanical installation I received my ECU back from ESS...perfect timing! I plugged it in and crossing my fingers, turned the key. It took a bit to get the fuel flowing through the system so the first start was a little rough, but afterwards I turned the car off and restarted it and it turned over smoothly just as it did before the supercharger was installed! Ran like it was always there! ESS has done a fantastic job mapping the ECU, no further adjustments were needed. Acceleration is super smooth with the added power coming on very early. It's actually so smooth it was a bit deceptive at first as to how much added power there was.
      The only thing I caution is with the clutch. It can handle everything except an aggressive popped clutch start over 3000 rpm, (there's just too much traction and torque with the Xi model for the OEM clutch), then it just screams at you! However, if you take off just under 2000 rpm you can then mash the throttle pedal to the floor the second you're rolling for max acceleration.

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't really call it a race style engine, however the BMW inline six is known to be quite a robust engine capable of handling some serious horsepower. The ESS Tuning TS2 kit actually puts out a moderate boost of 8psi, (which equates to approx. 90-100 extra horses), and this is pretty much the max you'd want to do on the stock engine. The stock engine has a fairly high compression ratio of 10:1 so if you want to go with a higher boost than 8-9 psi you'll have to look at more serious engine mods, such as lower compression pistons, stronger head studs instead of the stock head bolts, and higher performance cams.
      The M54B30 motor is the one found in any of the 2001-2005 330 serious of BMWs. And I'd recommend the six speed manual usually mated to those motors but I'd recommend a higher performance clutch.

    • @Perry_Wolf

      I beg to differ a little. I do love the sound of turbos and waste gate but running a lower psi like this supercharger the turbo wouldn't perform as well due to the lag. The power delivery from the SC is so early and smooth I'd take it over a turbocharger any day.

      cxcMix - I'm sure you can, just not sure what level of boost that transmission can handle. I know ESS Tuning website mentioned the 2001-2005 models with auto transmission was recommended not to go above 7psi boost, which I think equated to about 60-70 extra hp.

    • @AlexanderPews
      @AlexanderPews 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can but you will have a little less horsepower, they drop the boost to 7 psi to make it safe for transmission.

      did you change any internals when istalled the kit?
      i mean can stock engine coop with all the boost?

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richy v2 - No, the TS2 unit produces 8psi boost and no internals need to be changed. This give about 340hp. (If your car had an automatic transmission they won't sell you more than the TS1 unit with 7psi boost). If you go to the 8.5psi TS2+ upgrade, (375hp), ESS Tuning recommends you use high performance cams and go with performance exhaust. For the TS3 upgrade, (14psi boost 575hp) you get lower compression pistons, and need the high performance cams and exhaust and its recommended you install studs into the head instead of using the OEM head bolts.

      Why would it suck? Compared to which AWD system? 62% rear and 38% front drive distribution, drives a bit like a rear drive with all driving aids turned off. It handles really well, even during tight cornering. I had no problems with it at all.

      Mine is bone stock so I can't comment on a boosted example. Mine has about 175,000 miles on it and still is tighter in the steering and suspension than many cars I've driven with 100,000 to 150,000 fewer miles. It's a 330xi with the 5-speed manual. There are a lot of CV joints between the clutch and the wheels that show a bit of backlash if you're rough with the clutch but if you're smooth with it, it runs really well. I've had this one for about 6 years and it's always entertaining to drive.

    how can the xi handle that ??

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Henno - The E46 inline 6 is a tank of a motor, it can handle far more yet. The only thing this car couldn't handle from this supercharger is dropping the clutch at anything over 2500rpm. So my only suggestion would be an upgraded UCC clutch. The only other issue guys have had with extra horsepower info an E46 is the suspension mounting points in the 2WD models due to acceleration torsion, but I figured with three AWD the torsion would be more evenly distributed through the chassis.

    Is the ESS supercharger only available for the XDrive AWD? Or can it be used on the RWD version?

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use it on both. However, if you have an automatic transmission ESS Tuning only recommends 7 psi of boost. Also, many people recommend applying a reinforcement kit to the rear subframe and suspension on the RWD E46. (But they recommend this regardless of whether or not you modify your car).

      I wasn't. First time I did anything this extensive. Very thorough instructions and as long as you follow them exactly you don't need much mechanical knowledge. However, I do suggest at the stage of mounting the SC to the intake bolts you have a second person there to help. The SC is 60lbs and to maneuver it over 11 bolts was not easy!

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ECU re-map is done by ESS, you send your ECU module to them, they re-flash it, and they send it back to you. The way I did it was I sent the ECU to them then started the install, just doing a couple hours a day, about 10-11hrs total. By the time I had it all installed the ECU arrived a day or two after. Plugged it in and it started up perfectly! ESS has really done a fantastic job with their mapping, worked flawless. Your mechanic friend and you could easily accomplish it!

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought it from ESSTuning.com. They don't sell the Lysolm screw style supercharger anymore. The kit at the time was $6800USD. As far as reliability I think it's really good, until the Stage 3 kit they keep the boost pressure down to tolerable amounts. But still gives an extra 80-100hp.

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, everything stock except the CAI, (K&N), and exhaust muffler, that's a Scorpion. The only thing that could've needed upgrading was the clutch, but even that could handle anything except a dropped clutch from higher than 2500rpm, too much traction.

      +Bangers UK Supercharge the M3 and see what happens.

    • @Perry_Wolf
      @Perry_Wolf  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +atlanticimports That's completely beside the point. At the time when I decided to buy the supercharger I had the 330xi and was thinking of my options and was toying with the idea of trading my car in on an M3 of the same year or so. The problem was, with the trade in value of my car I would likely have to fork over $12 to $13K on top of my trade in to buy an M3. Then I saw the ESS Tuning supercharger for $6800 USD and thought it a rather excellent alternative. Comparatively, the M3 has better suspension and is a lighter car, so to call this car an M3 beater isn't very accurate. However, it's a nice alternative and the nice thing was the all wheel drive coupled with this horsepower. Very nice!

    • @atlanticimports6939
      @atlanticimports6939 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's all I was saying. The 330xi is going to have more power loss due to the AWD drivetrain and won't handle near as good as the M3 with LSD rear end. That being said the 330 can still be a fun car with a boost in power if you have money to spend. The Technique Tuning turbo kit would have been my option however as its $6900 and gives 375rwhp.
