Thanks everyone for watching! A few things to clear up: Yes, I know the music is too loud. The video export compressed the sound in a weird way, and when I released this video, I didn't think I would be making a full channel! (Or I would have been more careful). On to the BMW... There are other maintenance things do to, that will greatly help you get the car up to tuning standards. You should look into re-doing your VANOS seals. This will re-gain lost low end torque. There are also a few bushings that are probably shot. Replace the rear trailing arm bushings, and replace the front control arm bushings at least. Replacing the small bushings in the shift linkage will sharpen the shifter feel up as well. On to performance... Once you get proper tires and brakes, consider looking into a real alignment. Front camber plates will help you get the front to grip, and the factory camber adjustment is minimal. Front camber plates will get you between -2 and -4 (ish) degrees of camber. There are lots of options to look up. Once you have those, have a proper alignment done. This will drastically chance the way the car handles if done properly. If you have any questions feel free to leave it here and I, or someone else will hopefully answer it for you. NO QUESTION IS STUPID. ASK AWAY.
Hey man, thanks for the video, really helpful! The door seal rubber on the driver's side is completly rekt, I want to change it. Obviously, I don't need to buy an original one, but I think it can be a bit better, since it has the specific size and it's a closed system (if I were to buy one online, it would come like 3 meters instead of the specific size, which I'd have to cut, etc etc). What do you think?
E46 Reviews with T.H. Hey! I have a 1999 e46 323i and it is very similar to yours. I was just wondering what the best exhaust setup in your opinion is. Like you I am on a budget but thank you for the videos keep it up!
Christopher Kennedy depends on your goals. Sound? Power? Headers will give you a good boost and are inexpensive but then you have to worry about emissions issues.
Cutting isn't the problem, my biggest concern is that the eficiency of the rubber seals may be lower with the cut. But anyway, I'll have to check out the prices of an original one and see the difference.
E46 Reviews with T.H. Yea mr know it all, explain why my Non M E46 aftermarket head unit randomly stopped producing sound through the speakers? Don't say stock amp.
1. Water pump 2.engine oil 3.trans/diff oil 4.gaskets all of then 5.transmissiom gasket the round rubbery thingys both of em 6. All filters 7.adjust chain tension in engine 7.5 Change pulleys & thermostat 8. NOW ENJOY YOUR CAR klick like
PVC, okay okay you get your new BMW. Now first thing... Literally tear the engine apart and replace everything plastic or rubber you see. Simple all of it allllllllll of it. I mean all. Engine. Trans. Suspension. Front rear allllllllll
I have owned three consecutive BMW e46s (all 325xi). I buy them used with 150k+ miles for $3500-4500 and run them hard until they aren't worth the maintenance and then they become parts cars. They are a riot to drive, especially in the winter. They have the most wonderful awd system (60/40 rear/front) power distribution. They are meant for hitting that little button that turns the warning lights on and the traction control off. Living in northern Michigan driving in the snow has become my favorite winter sport, 60mph and sideways and being well in control is a damn good feeling. I keep these cars generally stock aside from fitting a better stereo in and some after market rims for my snow tires. Maintenance is minimal in my opinion, no more or less than most cars... and I run these things hard. Many valid points in this video, one thing to add for more performance is weight reduction. One of my parts cars is being turned into a hillclimb rally mobile so I am in the process of removing as much as possible, ie speakers, door panels, seats, etc. If you have ever wanted a fun, inexpensive car to rip around in, just buy an e46.
I like your advice, start with all the fluids and filters and work up. Mods for these are going to be like modding any NA engine, CAMS, ported headers, test pipe, better flowing exhaust, CAI will make power if installed to a colder location, chips will help to an extent, standalone ecu and dyno tune will always make more power, lightened flywheel, lighter pulleys, porting head, then polyurethane control arm bushes, sway bar, bushes, links, camber bolts etc.
You are exactly right. Maintaining an E46 is very satisfying. I've had my 325xi for about 3 yrs now and started with an engine replacement (last owner sucked with oil changes), replaced everything during that; coolant system, belts, OFHG, PCV, plugs, fluids, bushings. Replaced 3/4 axles and some diff seals, and miscellaneous along the way, but you know what? Its nice to have a car that is RELIABLE from maintenance, especially in -40 below winters in MN. The E46 is a very nice base to have a clean looking car, and adding some subtle mods - angel eyes, smoked corners, etc. - go a long way, and have gotten plenty of compliments. Is maintenance pricey? Yea, with any car it can be. But I have also learned a lot from owning this one car and enjoy working on her, makes me appreciate it that much more. This coming Spring gotta replace the rear suspension!
+acidofil you are totally right. iMovie had a hard time processing this before I got a new computer. A few things messed up when i exported it. Too late now! Lol.
Wow. This is what I was looking for on youtube. Please continue to let us e46ers know what is important to pay attention to on our builds. Currently making a to-do list based off your videos.
I'm a BMW Tech...I wont drive anything else. Im not sure what car out there requires NO maintenance, No repairs, and never has any problems EVER? But when BMW's have an issue (usually caused by blatant neglect)...people use that to dog on it's reputation. You want to talk about cars with serious problem? Go buy a Pontiac FIero, or a Chrysler LeBaron, or a Range Rover....just make sure you have a fire extinguisher riding shot-gun!!!
yo off topic but do you smoke? My dad is a bmw master tech and has recently discovered he likes smoking weed after a lifetime of not partaking. But he is scared that he will get tested at work. Just wondering what you think since you have 420 in your name lol
you may be right on when and why they have issues, but i have a e46 325i 5speed and a pontiac fiero and the pontiac is reliable as fuck, overheats at times but never starts on fire, runs and drives incredible being a $100 car and with minimal maitenance and especially being an 86' in the dark american car years. but yea chryslers are shit
dealer techs aren't real mechanics. had a Mazda tech come to my work holding a h7 standard cheap headlight globe and he says "am I covered by warranty is this light destroys my cars electrical system". ...
my first problem was valve cover gasket than oil filter housing gasket whit o-rings.. oil was everywhere :) thanks to youtube i fixed it :D im learning a lot about service since i have e46 and i love it.. :)
just got my 02 330ci with 110k kms, already replaced the thermostat, alternator, waterpump. Changed to liqui moly oil, will do the differential oil change soon, next spring will do a fully swap to a manual transmission(now it's an auto), luckily I got my buddy who's a mechanic help me, saved tons of labor cost XD
if go to change tranny keep the diff ;) (3.38 ratio) - go for the 6 speed, it'll go to 250~ km/h on 6th gear and it's realy quick on takeoff from a dig. you`ll be suprised with the cars u can hang till the 3rd gear ;) tested myself with a buddy's merc e400 auto... no chance on a rolling but from a dig a had him by a car lenght. xD .... and keep an eye on your rear axle mounts after that ... they don't like heavy changes on tourque back there ;) maybe one hint more.. dont do off that hose of the exhaustflap.. there's a control valve behind the left cover in your trunk - just do a switch in there ;)
I already chiseled that flap XD, so fucking loud now XD. Is the 6-speed manual gonna direct fit my 02 330ci? On the realoem they say I only can use the 5-speed tranny, do they share the same drive shaft and guibo also all rest parts? During the swap I really don't want to stop the process and go to the junk yard to find some parts... I got a local offer for all swap parts including 5-speed tranny for C$300 BUT I have to replace all the pins for less headache. I just check the junk yard website, a 150k kms(about 10k miles) 6-speed tranny cost around C$700, dunno if it worth that much for fun driving, I only had 5-speed manual experience... About my car, just finished spark plugs yesterday, was thinking to save some time so didn't take off the ac filter frame, then spent way more time to change the back 2 spark plugs.. Now I'm waiting for the adjuster O ring coming, has a too lean and idle rough problem, also the hand brake need to be replaced the cable and shoes. BTW, fuck PrincessAUTO's shitty tools!
as i remember right, the 6speed gearbox was a bit longer, so driveshaft would not fit. the 6speed has exact the same ratios, so nothing changes there. it just makes the shorter diff setup fit perfectly, as you have 6 full usable gears and no overdrive (with 5gearbox top speed is around 225kmh on 3.38 diff). to your lean running problem - it's mostly an vacuum leak of oil-separator or its hoses there or ur disa is broken (be careful on removing it, so no parts fall into your intake mainfold) - just in case replacing the parts you ordered do not fix it.
Got it, thanks. Just phoned the guy who offered me the 5-spd tranny, he does have 6 speed whole set except driveshaft for C$200, so I just need to go to the junk yard to get a drive shaft, cheers! Yes, the o ring I'm waiting for is for the DISA, I think the oil-separator should be OK because of the low kms.
the disa unit usually suffers from the axle of the flap, it's made of "quality" plastik shit lol. it's going to get grinded, first starts to rattle and then the shaft just breaks. due to the nice fact its drilled inside you got an nice ~2mm leak directly to the mainfold. this will just keep repeating every ~100k km (same as thermostat ...)
Bought mine (03 plate, convertible, 0 rust, slight oil leak, 90k on the clock) for £2.5k - fantastic motor and every time I drive it is just as fun as the first time I got in it
For 330i you can do:Port and polish head and Throttle body.Cold air intake K&N,Light flywheel,Underdrive pulleys,New camshafts or camshaft reprofiling (cheap),Exhaust manifolds,New exhaust,,Shorter diff ( is good to be LSD-because LSD gives good start from 0 mph) and all this things needs good remap - its stage 2 remap. From this you got -50-60 hp on crankshaft..You got 330i stage 2.
So interesting to watch these old videos. When did you realize you're funny? I know it's part of the "script" of the new videos, but you're so naturally hilarious/charming throughout all the new videos. Like I said, interesting to watch!
I hope this is seen by the so called journalists who are stagnant and in ever decreasing circles as far as the most obvious tuning products are concerned. The fact that you mentioned that the cooling system will benefit from a refurbishment shows that you understand what many people don't. It is a refreshing change to see some common sense in this area kudos
7 years later this is only even more relevant. Picked up a £1500 120k 325ci M, I’ve got the cooling & service done as well as a few niggles & cosmetics. Now the fun can begin. Just refurb’d a set of style 49s & got some coilovers on the way. She’ll be busting skids by the end of summer.
I bought my 2002 BMW 325ci in 04 its now 2024/25 just had engine rebuild, replaced everything, replaced plastic parts resivior tank radiator and water pump with all aluminium, new clutch and flywheel. Car runs better now then when I first bought it. It still needs a few things, oil sensor, fuel sensor, transmission and Differential fuel changes, its been electronicly tuned, it runs like a new BMW
Getting my 2002 BMW E46 325i Sport manual with 140k miles decarbonized tomorrow and remapped on Wednesday! Also did throttle reset hack today so results will be interesting!
Good video, another tip: If you want to combine proper maintenance with a potentially real power increase, replace or repair the VANOS unit and replace both cam sensors (intake and exhaust). On any E46 with a six and close to 100k this will be worn out. Doing this had an incredible effect on my 328Ci's power output. I did not do an actual power test but I would estimate at least 20% power increase at certain RPMs, close to factory level, judged from acceleration numbers. It also dramatically decreased fuel consumption (by 20%!). It also took care of some weird behaviours like stumbling at idle, power dip at 3000RPM etc. This will make the car much better and cheaper to run. Also vacuum leaks, like you touch on (DISA, intake rubber parts) is gold for performance.
I am a 6 yr bmw tech and I own a e46 1999 323i, the worst year ever yet i have 307000 on the dial. Maintenance is a big thing. This video is wrong in a few areas for a person with an e46. If you need to do a clutch get rid of the damn dual mass fly wheel, very large problem. Valve cover gasket and oil filter gasket a must on these cars so I do agree. Replace the rear main while doing the solid flywheel and upgrade the clutch...... I wont name the brand I went with but night and day difference. Also if you want some power this car will take 8ish psi of boost safely and a 100 shot of N.O. really well. Any questions hit me up
just bought a 05 330Ci ZHP with 144k miles for 5k. doing repairs first of course then going down the rest of the list. appreciate the confirmation on what i had planned :) now to check out the other vids you have
bro loved the video and you're wrong BMWs are not that much money to own if you know what you're doing with them but still great video and you are absolutely right about the maintenance first then fun later got myself a 2001 bmw325xi with only 76,000 miles on it some maintenance done and a lot of modifications done under the hood 2.5 inline 6 first Beemer ever and I love it because of your video I made sure maintenance was done right away one owner car no service records oops my bad should have made sure but came with two keys and no issues today bought it 6 months ago once again great vid
I know shit about tuning and all that, but this really seems like good advice. I bought a 2004 330 ci 2 days ago and I will be following this guide for sure. Will hopefully do an update in a couple of months or so. Thanks!
Hahaha, you're so right about using the search function in the forums. People, PLEEEEEEEEEASE follow his advice there. He knows what he's talking aboot.
I have been following this too. From what I have read tuning your own ECU comes with the risk of bricking it, which is a big pain. But if you are confident in your computer abilities, I say go for it! Its just not something that I would recommend to a person new to car tuning.
Maintenance on bmw never ends, I have one for two years and there's always something needing fix. The light at the end of the tunnel always seems one step away
No your wrong. I've had an E46 318 (2001) for 3.5 years, and besides normal wear and tear items it hasn't really " always needed something fixing". I mean I use mine daily and I went almost 1 year without spending anything at all apart from fuel. And that's using it 6-7 days a week.
You said maintenance on BMW's never end. What you meant was, the people YOU know have to spent out all the time? Not just BMW's in general, because like i said, ive had mine 3.5 years and i havent spent out on it apart from normal things that any car would need. All i was saying is, clearly its not just BMW's in general is it, otherwise i wouldnt be disagreeing with you would i.
Hola comment section, I own a 2001 325xi with a few modifications. Performance wise I am currently running a custom cat-back exhaust with an X pipe, performance headers, a 330 intake manifold, 330 injectors, a short ram intake with a pod filter (in conjunction with my mtech bumper I get a lot of cold air into the engine bay), I'm also running carbon ceramic breaks with drilled and slotted rotors, I'm also lowered about an inch and a half all around on maxspeed coilovers, I have pearlecent white style 42 rims wrapped in hankook ventus v2 tires, and I'm running 20 mm spacers in front and 30 mm in back for a flush tucked look and wider wheel base. Since I've done a lot of the "obvious" stuff I've been looking into rounding out my build by buying a lightweight flywheel/performance clutch kit and buying a pre-tuned ecu that is customized for my car based on its mods. I'm also looking at snagging some braided break lines, a braided clutch line, and adjustable rear camber arms. I mainly wanted to reach out and ask if anyone knew of some reputable flywheel kits and pre-tuned ECU's for a 325 because these are the two mods I'm looking into the most at the moment. But, I also wanted to ask if there are any other performance mods I might have missed! Maintenance wise I've replaced spark plugs, radiator, expansion tank, valve cover seal, intake manifold seal, vanoss line, PCV breather lines, oil, coolant, air filter, injectors, and front drive axles. I plan on doing some weight reduction in the future but I'm currently focused on power mods. Let me know what you think I should look into! And if you have a question about my car or its mods please feel free to ask away! Thanks!
Great reasonable advice, your totally right on the money. its big deal just to have one of these cars at over 100k with no dash warning lights and everything mostly sorted. its a challenge but doable.
For engine stuff you need exhaust, cams, procharger and cooling. Also you need stronger a stronger head gasket, like for example carbon fibre so it can hold the higher rpms. The reason I said procharger is because it is a lot cheaper, waaay easier to install and it still makes a lot of power!
Quick tips as I have been dealing with an high kms e46 maintenance is big, just get the stuff done that is most important, the things that are going, I have noticed a difference with the cold air intake with a muffler delete, will be installing header and getting a tune, but after maintenance for some speed gains add 18' wheels, cold air intake, free up that exhaust cause they are super restrictive, especially the first resonator, muffler and cats, if able a m50 intake manifold will be great for n/a and turbo builds, but honestly get the mods you want on then the tune as tunes can be pretty pricey if you have a ms45, also x3 rear diffs are a great upgrade and bolt right on, but I think with the ci or just the 330 trim you will need a different driveshaft or modify your existing but please don't quote me on that 😂 but, if you want to put serious power down you will need forged pistons/ rods and forged camshaft as the ones in a 325 are cast and can't handle a lot of boost (usually anything over 7psi to be safe)
nice vid i have a 330i with 3.46 gears and its pretty easy to reach top speed. I want to say top speed for 5 speed manual with 3.46 is about 140mph, might be a little off but thts what ive hit and rpms are over 6k.
I have done all of the maintenance you mentioned and more I changed the springs just to new original BMW added Bilstein shocks brembo rotors akibono pads haven't really looked for a shop for tuning yet I don't think it many spots in ny
I will tell you how we modify our e46 in europe. Buy 330diesel 204bhp. Then bigger turbo gtb2260vk from 330d e90 , e60 335d injectors, new bigger intercooler,cp 3 fuel pump , remapping and custom ceramic clutch set up. We get ~350hp-380hp and 600-700nm. All costs around 3000euros, so it is like 3500 dollars. So yea, good luck "tuning" your atmospheric petrol engines with cold air intakes +15bhp ;DDD .
I'll tell you how to REALLY modify your E46 in europe: drop the sub-frame and have some welder reinforce the crap out of it before attempting anything that gives you more power. Or you know, toss on a bigger turbo and do burnouts until your subframe either falls off or falls IN. Common issues seen even on a 320D is cracking and rust on the sub-frame mounts.
Who? me or Bigtime? commenting really doesn't work well on youtube nowadays. If it's me then i'm talking about the well known sub-frame issues with the e46 chassis wich under stress will cause the body of the car to flex, introducing microfractures in the sub-frame mount wich will lead to bigger fractures and rust. It's an expensive fix and in most countries these kinds of repairs have to be done by someone with a lisense to do these kinds of repairs.
Can you post a pic? I kinda imagine about what you talking. I had some issues, but it was till 2000, or 2001 years models. This fixed in facelift model.
I love old school Throttle House! 10/10 bad porn music and bare bones production! “Throw a bag over the camera!” LMAO! It’s awesome watching you guys grow. PS, help convince my wife to let me get an E46 330 as our second car. Autocross and it fits two car seats, the ultimate driving machine?!?!
Learned some great tips, thanks! Replacing entire cooling system slowly then off to do some stuff you mentioned. Pretty much interested in maintenance for first 1-2 years.
I came here for a quick recommendation for maincametenance, and ended up getting something that the OP of this channel called ( something right out the back ) and it's to, replace anything that's bolted down. Replace all liquids , oils etc. I was waiting for the punch line, ( to replace the head gaskets )
I have a 2003 330xi sedan with 119k miles, it needs a door lock cylinder, a driver side control arm (i will replace the passenger side as well) and it needs an oil change to my knowledge, but I’ll check the valve cover and oil filter housing gasket to see if they’re cracked and worn out
nope, mine is 2004 and only 47k miles or less. I'm the original owner but curious if i should beef it up or change the grill black and or change the wheels to black too to see if it looks updated with all that.
Yeah I’ve owned mine for less than a year and am already 5000 in, the only thing I have to worry about now is the clutch rear control arms and vanos seals
Biggest advise is buy the$400-$700 maintenance packages that come with all the parts. Don't buy parts separately. Saves you so much time over a lengthy ownership.
It's an e46, so before you even think about adding power mods, reinforce the rear sub-frame mounts. Have the plates welded in and use the proper structural foam in the trunk cavities. Before you even buy an e46, check for sub-frame mount cracks. And remember, the harder you drive the car, the more likely it is to start cracking, so don't wait to get it done. At this point, the car is already over a decade old. The fuel pump will need replacing sooner rather than later. Get the Walbro 255lph kit (or similar) for the e46. It's cheaper ($200 vs $400) and better. Get rid of the old mechanical fan, as well. They like to explode when the bearings start going bad on the water pump. When that happens, you lose just about everything in the engine bay that is plastic or rubber and will end up with a dented hood. Replace it with a Spal 16in puller fan. Remove the electric aux fan and use the controller box from the aux fan to control the Spal. Of course, this is stuff I learned and have done for my M3. There will be differences in different models. YMMV.
Hi.i am new here have a BMW E 46 it is 2000 year model thank you for advise .I do the old fluid flashing it and only I need to replace some of the lower parts bushings cut off a lot af sound i heard once i hit the small hall in the street.buy anyways thank you for your video giving me an idea how to make my car in good condition but I don't want to modify i want is only like nice but everything in my car I want is stock i just a lips to my front bumper and that's it no more modification.Thank you so much.
Cool video. Lots of help. Roughly, how much do you think those maintenance areas you named off might cost just for the parts? Have my eyes on a 325i at the moment or save up for the E90 335i...
I have a grand Cherokee Laredo v8 5.2. And all I did was remove the pad filter and add a pipe to the intake box facing the front grill..... And I have to when ever I approach a hill I can fill the engine just inhale up the hill smoothly without pressuring the engine inhale air and trying to maximize power......so it does work and I Belize it increase fuel economy..... And if u want extra cold air put some vix in the entrance of the pipe of the cold air intake lol have a nice day...
i think most timing chains last 300k miles or more they have automatic tensioners that take up slake in the chain as it gets worn. changing the oil every 3000 to 5000 miles instead of 15000 miles like bmw suggest. keeps timing chains and the rest of the engine in good shape also keeps gaskets from getting hard and leaking, and the vanos from getting clogged up with dirt. this guy in the video is mostly correct about all the things that need to be replaced to keep these car running. the power steering pumps fail around 100kmiles. waterpump and thermostat must be replaced every 60kmiles. the engine cannot ever be overheated or run hot, or it will blow a head gasket, so all cooling system items must be kept in good working order. radiator and coolant recovery tank and hoses must be replaced every 120k miles. belts and belt tensioners and idler pulleys need to be replaced every 75k miles.
I’ve had an E46 since new. IMO, all the tuning and mods in the world, aside from forced induction, just improve the driving experience. Making a car “fast” is relative to other stuff on the road or track. You can put thousands of dollars into a 330 in cams, headers and exhaust, chip, diff, tires, clutch, flywheel, shifter linkage, CF hoods and trunks, suspension, and brakes. And in the end, you’ll still get beat in a straight line by a new Camry. Don’t mod these things if you want a fast street machine. If you want a fast track machine, maybe, but there are other great options that probably are better platforms. If you want just want a fun car and a fantastic driving experience, go ahead and get an E46 and mod it up. At the end, you’ll still be slow in a straight line though and for the money you put into it in mods, you might come close to an E46 M3 at this point.
Straight in line 6cyl is a great engine no doubt! But trust me this car will bring you a ton of problems like mentioned. There is one thing that is not brought up in forums and on some sites is the evaporators going on these cars. I have changed a few in my time. They will go and it’s not an easy job.
Performance mods 101: 1) go forced induction or don't waste your money 2) become a damn good mechanic because paying someone else to work on your car will cost you more than just buying a better car in the first place
lsd? weld the diff instead. and cold air intakes do work. you don't get a big gain in hp, but it helps, and is healthy for the engine. your letting it get more air it CAN already get. factory filters restrict. now its getting more air in you headers, can get wider diameter exhaust so all that extra air can move. hell you can even go a little bigger with injectors too. and colder air is more dense. only if you have it done right. pipe going down towards front lower area of engine bay, away from fan areas where its blowing warm air around, usually filter located around fog light area where bumper grill let's air in. BUT, you don't want to go too low, especially if you don't have engine cover underneath. when its raining your engine will become a shop vac and suck water getting splashed around. you want to have it in that right spot so it can get the cool air coming in by bumpers grill by fog light. I believe it's the e46 csl it has another Hole by the fog light on the left side only specifically for the air to go in through a tube to the filter.
We have had our 2004 325xi for 15 years now, my dad is the first owner. In just over a week the car ended up in the shop twice! Brake and oil lights both went on, only to find out that our brakes are gone, our oil gasket is leaking (we also had to get an oil change, my dad accidentally poured ATF into the oil!), and the worst part, the rear coil springs were cracked and the rear struts were leaking. Very expensive repairs, and probably the last repairs my dad will do. Because next year, this car will be MINE, and I am NOT COMPLAINING.
I have a 2000 328i and it seems like finding performance parts for it is hard none of my questions get answered is the m52b28 just an odd motor? I can’t find an ECU, i can’t find bolt ons for it and I can’t seem to find anyone that actually knows how to tune them I wanna make the car a monster but I can’t when parts aren’t available for that motor
Great info man! I just recently bought an '04 330ci and have really been enjoying your videos. I can relate to a lot of the points you've made, my car has the same UUC lightweight flywheel as yours and also ceramic coated headers among other clean mods. I think I'll consider deleting the clutch delay valve next. Consider me sub'd!
Great to hear. Glad I could help! I think I'll be doing headers at some point as well. My quicker differential has arrived. So hopefully I'll have a DIY and review up soon. That's a mod you should consider for sure.
What would all those things cost approximately if doing the labor myself. I'm not concerned with the modifications, just the maintenance you suggested doing right off the bat. I'm looking into getting an e46 and want to just figure this all into what I'm expecting to pay
+billy mccabe it can range anywhere from 500 - several thousand. Depending on what parts you need. The basics shouldn't be over maybe 800? Depending on where you live?
E46 Reviews with T.H. Thanks for the reply. I live in western Pennsylvania. So I'll reserve at least a grand for parts. There seems to be a lot of e46s for sale within 100 or so miles of me ranging anywhere from a clapped out one for 1500- 7000 for a decent one. Ill be looking for a well maintained one for 4-5k at the most I think.
I m looking to buy a e46 coupe, in a private sale. I look on Craigslist, cargurus, and cars.com. I find only a few cars within a 150 miles of my location, and the ones I do find have very high miles. Why are the e46 coupes seem so rare. They were a very well selling model in its day??
At least he is accurate about the cold air intake, was looking through the comments looking for a "tuner" fan boy to argue with. Its funny how people can so easily believe that they can outsmart the engineers who have designed the car.
Well sometimes shit is designed to a price point, so the engineers just made the best thing they could for the money/quality of their suppliers. So your generalization is fucking stupid too.
Benjamin Foster I have a racing dynamics intake for my e46 330i and it is designed to function like the factory intake only freer flowing. I have a dry filter with a waterproof silicon sock that keeps dirt out.
But anyway, I'll have to check out the prices of an original one and see the difference.

intro fusion Cant explain in words but quick google search shows videos where it is located. Your welcome.

A 6 minute guide of how to make a $5000 car cost $15,000 without doing single mod lol
Welcome to BMW life lol.
E46 Reviews with T.H. I know brother. Had an e46 m3 years ago....woof lol
Most of the stuff really is not that expensive, it just takes time.
15k because you took it to the stealership instead of doing the work yourself.... Parts are a 3rd of what the labor is.
josh kates exactly...and these are the morons who call themselves “car guys”
I like your advice, start with all the fluids and filters and work up. Mods for these are going to be like modding any NA engine, CAMS, ported headers, test pipe, better flowing exhaust, CAI will make power if installed to a colder location, chips will help to an extent, standalone ecu and dyno tune will always make more power, lightened flywheel, lighter pulleys, porting head, then polyurethane control arm bushes, sway bar, bushes, links, camber bolts etc.
Hi what's CAI?
@@imestia7911 Cold air intake
This coming Spring gotta replace the rear suspension!
please don't use background music while you talk, it is very annoying.. Anyways thanks a lot for interesting vids!
+acidofil you are totally right. iMovie had a hard time processing this before I got a new computer. A few things messed up when i exported it. Too late now! Lol.

@@ThrottleHouse I guess making youtube videos are a lot like modding cars. googling stuff can be quite useful xDDD
Just wondering what you think since you have 420 in your name lol
you may be right on when and why they have issues, but i have a e46 325i 5speed and a pontiac fiero and the pontiac is reliable as fuck, overheats at times but never starts on fire, runs and drives incredible being a $100 car and with minimal maitenance and especially being an 86' in the dark american car years. but yea chryslers are shit

i have been driving bmw for the last 26 years. now driving a e46 325i man gotta love the buttery smooth inline 6 in this car feeels so refined.
my first problem was valve cover gasket than oil filter housing gasket whit o-rings.. oil was everywhere :) thanks to youtube i fixed it :D im learning a lot about service since i have e46 and i love it.. :)
just got my 02 330ci with 110k kms, already replaced the thermostat, alternator, waterpump. Changed to liqui moly oil, will do the differential oil change soon, next spring will do a fully swap to a manual transmission(now it's an auto), luckily I got my buddy who's a mechanic help me, saved tons of labor cost XD
if go to change tranny keep the diff ;) (3.38 ratio) - go for the 6 speed, it'll go to 250~ km/h on 6th gear and it's realy quick on takeoff from a dig. you`ll be suprised with the cars u can hang till the 3rd gear ;) tested myself with a buddy's merc e400 auto... no chance on a rolling but from a dig a had him by a car lenght. xD .... and keep an eye on your rear axle mounts after that ... they don't like heavy changes on tourque back there ;)
maybe one hint more.. dont do off that hose of the exhaustflap.. there's a control valve behind the left cover in your trunk - just do a switch in there ;)
I already chiseled that flap XD, so fucking loud now XD.
Agreed bro! hey do you think my 328ci uk verion is lsd? its crazy fast off the lights...cheers
As far as I know the only E46 that came with an LSD is the M3
everyone must follow these steps, i agree.

Those camshaft sensors, do they throw a code when they go bad or do they just degrade over time?
Any questions hit me up
+bobbyd if you take a look at my channel you would find a whole different video on a lightweight flywheel and it's benefits. ;)
cool thanks

bro loved the video and you're wrong BMWs are not that much money to own if you know what you're doing with them but still great video and you are absolutely right about the maintenance first then fun later got myself a 2001 bmw325xi with only 76,000 miles on it some maintenance done and a lot of modifications done under the hood 2.5 inline 6 first Beemer ever and I love it because of your video I made sure maintenance was done right away one owner car no service records oops my bad should have made sure but came with two keys and no issues today bought it 6 months ago once again great vid

Very nice helpful video. I'm going for a M3 shortly here so these are great tips on what I should start with upon initial purchase thank you.
It's now possible to DIY tune your MS43 computer, as seen in early e46/e39/e53 I6s. Look up some TH-cam videos, and check out the MS43 wiki.
I have been following this too. From what I have read tuning your own ECU comes with the risk of bricking it, which is a big pain. But if you are confident in your computer abilities, I say go for it! Its just not something that I would recommend to a person new to car tuning.
I googled something for my E46 and it brought me here, now you're saying to Google again. WHAT???
Shell Rotella T6 5w 40. I've used this engine oil for years and the internals on my 2004 325xi wagon look new!
Maintenance on bmw never ends, I have one for two years and there's always something needing fix. The light at the end of the tunnel always seems one step away
But with tuning it is so much fun
Which all I needed to do was tuning :)
No your wrong. I've had an E46 318 (2001) for 3.5 years, and besides normal wear and tear items it hasn't really " always needed something fixing". I mean I use mine daily and I went almost 1 year without spending anything at all apart from fuel. And that's using it 6-7 days a week.
How can I be wrong if I have one and help fix others almost on a daily basis? You cannot know better dude :)
Hola comment section,
I own a 2001 325xi with a few modifications.
Thanks!
I came here contemplating buying an E46 M3, I'm leaving content with my '10 Forester XT
Can I put some vix in the entrance of the cold air intake pad filter for extra cold air? Or will the engine ignite and explode ?
Great reasonable advice, your totally right on the money.
its big deal just to have one of these cars at over 100k with no dash warning lights and everything mostly sorted.
its a challenge but doable.
I also have a 325, and that’s some great advice.
I have done all of the maintenance you mentioned and more I changed the springs just to new original BMW added Bilstein shocks brembo rotors akibono pads haven't really looked for a shop for tuning yet I don't think it many spots in ny
hopeful I get one this summer😍😍😍
You ever get one?
Shit dude...what are you talking about...
I am going through this right now on a 323Ci. What a nightmare.
Who? me or Bigtime? commenting really doesn't work well on youtube nowadays.
Got to do the two plastic coolant block and head pipes also. The CCV and it's plastic hoses should get changed too.
I came here for a quick recommendation for maincametenance, and ended up getting something that the OP of this channel called ( something right out the back ) and it's to, replace anything that's bolted down. Replace all liquids , oils etc. I was waiting for the punch line, ( to replace the head gaskets )
Lots of great information,! Great video
Wishing they could rerelease another e46. I love e46 especially m3 which is my ideal car
Just got my seconde46. Defnitely has its flaws but its worth it. Had a zhp awhile ago and it was incredibke, now i got the 325 sedan in oxford green
Biggest advise is buy the$400-$700 maintenance packages that come with all the parts. Don't buy parts separately. Saves you so much time over a lengthy ownership.
Oh and do your own work! E46 not smart buying if you can't do basic maintenance.
Guide for N/A e46 tuners
*Cai, Headers, exhaust, m50 intake manifold, power pully kit, mechanical fan delete, and lastly zhp cams.*
YMMV.
Turn the f***ing music down. it should be background noisr, but I couldn't hear half of what you said
just got done installing an ebay supercharger on my 316i compact but it runs really bad now. should I consider doing my first oil change?

Cool video. Lots of help. Roughly, how much do you think those maintenance areas you named off might cost just for the parts? Have my eyes on a 325i at the moment or save up for the E90 335i...
It's several hundred easily for the basic maintenance.
Must must must do maintenance. O4 e48 passing 290,000 miles today. 07 e90 passing 150,000. Both getting same things done at same time lol
could turn off the music while you speak!
I know... When I edited it in iMovie it wasn't that bad. I learned my lesson haha. Thanks for watching!
E46 Reviews with T.H. no worries! thanks for the videos!
Ok....do you use Mobil-1, what weight do YOU use? Have you found one weight works better than another, or do you use the factory weight?
I like your headlights I have same car but mine are different. Where did you get your head lights
Some e46s have different headlights, prefacelift, and facelift yours could be prefacelift
Very good advice
Straight in line 6cyl is a great engine no doubt! But trust me this car will bring you a ton of problems like mentioned. There is one thing that is not brought up in forums and on some sites is the evaporators going on these cars. I have changed a few in my time. They will go and it’s not an easy job.
I appreciate it, thanx! martijn from the Netherlands
Performance mods 101:
1) go forced induction or don't waste your money
2) become a damn good mechanic because paying someone else to work on your car will cost you more than just buying a better car in the first place
lsd? weld the diff instead. and cold air intakes do work. you don't get a big gain in hp, but it helps, and is healthy for the engine. your letting it get more air it CAN already get. factory filters restrict. now its getting more air in you headers, can get wider diameter exhaust so all that extra air can move. hell you can even go a little bigger with injectors too. and colder air is more dense. only if you have it done right. pipe going down towards front lower area of engine bay, away from fan areas where its blowing warm air around, usually filter located around fog light area where bumper grill let's air in.
The E46 M3 BMW inline-6 engine is actually the best inline engines ever manufactured and that's why the new Supra they used BMW parts
Just brought one, and I had to do majority of the stuff you named.
I have a dry filter with a waterproof silicon sock that keeps dirt out.
we can see your license plate at 0:30 bro
BYJM529 now what? blurring your plate is pointless since anyone on the road can see it anyways
well all your neighbours know where you live. so can you give me your adress please?
No problem
Wettersteinstraße 26

ok maybe you got no problem with this. but some people do. and since T.H. blurred out his plate in the whole video, he might be one. schönen tag noch
