I have both the SIDI Adventure and SIDI Crossfire boots and I love them both. I added the Crossfire when I purchased a wr250 and got into more technical terrain (enduro rides) than what I do with my Super Tenere (blasting forest roads). Also, I did 5-10 day adventure rides when I came to appreciate very my Adventure GTX a lot. It is a different game when you wear it in all conditions, all day, all week long.
PLEASE balance the sound levels between the spoken word and the cut scene music. Impossible to listen to without constantly adjusting the volume. Otherwise good vid.
If you're going to insert cuts of people riding with that music in the background, then you could at least make an effort to normalize the volume. It was so annoying to turn the volume up when you were talking, to then have to turn it down when the music came on, then back up again to hear you talk... Super annoying. Couldn't even finish the video.
I ABSOLUTELY agree with everything in this vid. I used Forma Terra Evo boots (very nice boots, don't get me wrong) and I had a relatively slow speed accident in which the bike (Yamaha TT600RE) fell on my right foot. My foot was broken transversally, meaning all the longer bones were fractured. I have to thank the Forma for not having had more extensive injuries (my doc said that, without the boots, I'd have a Lisfrank injury), BUT, had I worn full-on motocross boots, I'm pretty sure the situation would've been quite different. It was the fact that the sole on the Forma easily bent that caused the fractures. Please, fellow riders reading this, use the best protection you can buy in terms of boots (lower body protection is critical). Nothing replaces your feet or legs or the time you spend recoverying. BUY MOTOCROSS BOOTS AND THANK ME LATER. Having a bit more difficulty walking is compensated each and every time you crash. Also, ALWAYS WEAR knee and hip protection. STAY SAFE, DON'T BE A SQUID. NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR HEALTH. Take if from someone who's wearing a cast for the next 2 months.
forma terra evo are trail boots, normal so,, everyboot are made for their environment.. with compromise so,, doing dirtbike or road with trail boot is not cleaver,, doing enduro with stunt shoes is not too,, but try to stunt with mx boot its just impossible,, mx boot are to protect from torsion and choc,, road for long friction on hard sharp floor,, buy the boots for what you practice .. and stop listen ppl crap and bullshit,,
@@aranoilean5480but mistakes do not choose when to happen. What and how you are riding. I seen people drop their bikes on their legs on straight gravel. And I am pretty sure the force of the bike crushing your feet is the same despite what and how you are riding. There is no riding discipline, that cheats physics.
@@sanketjain9320 Every time I've fallen off road, it's de lower part of the body that takes the hit. Either the bike falls on it or make something twist, etc. If you see Fortnine video about beginner equipment, he also says boots are some of the most important items cause the statistics show that lower body injuries are the most common in nonlethal accidents.
@@metschambel4074 Hey, I understand boots are the most imp. I was asking for jackets vs pants. In the case of touring and gravel roads riding at low speeds
I raced motocross and Enduros back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. I love the new generation of motocross boots for both ADV riding and touring. Yes, touring. Don’t underestimate the benefits of MX boots for touring. In our ADV travels can, do and will throw unexpected challenges and you want to defer that mindset of be safer than sorry when taking care of a very hard to heal area, the tib/fib area of the lower leg. Great relevant content. Life’s short, just buy the bike.
I so agree. I started off riding with adventure boots and fracture my ankle on small fall. Since then I now wear tech 7, fallen many times and ankles are not my worries.
Completely agree. Seen many broken ankles/feet from adv boots (usually forma). I wear sg12’s and love them. I carry a pair of vans for side hikes. Quick tip: Gaerne for wide feet - sidi for narrow.
Very glad to find your channel just now - appreciate the vindication - about 1000 miles into my summer adventure riding R1200GS as well, I noticed a sale on Amazon on some size 11 white O'Neal MX boots in perfectly new condition for all of $78 for the pair - I snatched them right up, got'm quick and wore them around for 3 days while in Spokane, WA - I then wore them for the remainder of my nearly 8,000 mile total ride across all of the western US and I have to completely agree with you - once broken in they were marvelous, especially riding much offf road thru the Tetons and many other demanding sections of my somewhat whimsically chosen and circuitous paths. The key here most certainly would be Break them in BEFORE riding if at all possible because my goodness but these puppies were stiff when first from the box... I even went through Wyoming 80+ mph for 3+ hours in pouring rain and found afterward that my feet hadn't really gotten all that wet and were the most comfortable aspect of me at that time, not to make too fine a point of it... It's almost like we ADV riders need permission or someone to simply say "it's OK to wear MX boots on every ADV ride"... I like mine so much that I no longer bother wearing anything else even on short rides... i did have to move the shifter up a bit but am so used to its position now that I wonder why I left it so long in the factory position... R1200GS + MX Boots + Long mixed roads & terrain = greater possibility of running out of gas! ...I subbed immediately following my 1st-time visit to your tube!
Awesome viewpoint I have been wearing Alpinestars Tech 10's for over 10 years now of Adventure riding as well as extreme off roading. You don't even know you have them on. Waterproof, easy off and on and sooo comfortable. Wouldn't leave home without them.
Great video great advice great music love the content don’t give a toss about the sound level good God...love watching Neil being daft enjoying life. Life is better while you’re riding 👍👍👍👍 thumbs up all the way guys.😜
Except for a short time owning a dirt bike in the 1980s, been a street rider till a year ago when I picked up an Africa Twin. Took an off road riding course and took off for Moab where I quickly experienced a wicked hyper extending ankle sprain by a simple drop in the sand - my dual purpose BMW boots (no idea the model - but definitely advertised as ADV boots) didn't help at all. Those boots are still fine for around town or a highway rip - but now I'm using Thor Blitz CE MX boots for anything off pavement and love them - very confident the boot support would not have allowed the sprain to take place in my prior incident. Totally agree it takes a few rides to get the inputs (shifting / braking) down correctly, but I have my confidence back again!
Curious, I was shopping for new adventure boots and found myself intuitively wondering over to the motocross boot page. They look much lighter and stronger. Adventure boots look clunky and I read reviews claiming the new owners couldn’t feel the brake or shift pedal through those heavy boots. Thanks for posting this video - it lets me know I’m not crazy
I used to wear a Tech 3 for adv riding and then got a pair of Forma Adventure. Broke fibula on the first time the bike fell over my foot - same situation happened dozens of times with the Tech 3 and nothing happened. On and didn't find the Forma comfy. Alpinestars Tech 3 and Tech 7 are excellent in protection and very comfortable!
Good video and good points there. Had a hard time myself to decide between Sidi Adventure boot or Crossfire 2 SRS. Went for the Crossfires as they offer better protection. The first feeling of them was no good as it was quite different compare to super-sport type boots I had before. I had a moment when I was thinking I did the wrong choice. But after few rides and braking them in I am happy that I went with the MX boots. Already saved my ankle couple of times. And they are not waterproof either but I can live with it.
Amen Lel. I crushed my right Achilles tendon wearing those BMW GS Rallye 3 Boots (Forma Dominator Comp) so I went to Gaerne SG12 and now Alpinestars Tech10. Seen WAY too many fib, tib/fib breaks on riders wearing "adventure" boots.
Forma Dominators are proper MX boots as far as any higher end MX boots out there... These are NOT "adventure" boots by any means. In Forma MX range there are only Predator boots that are higher positioned than Dominators... Of course these are not in class of SG12 or Tech 10, but still has much more protection than some of genuine "adventure" boots out there.
hey guys, from a man thats worn mx boots for 25 years, when you buy your new boots. they are waterproof up to 3/4 your boot but anyway take your new ones put them on and find the deepest hole you can or garden hose. completely soak them while on and wear them around for an hr. like buying new shoes and doing this it will break them in. this will greatly enrich your transition if youve never worn a pair. geeze dont try to break in a new pair without doing this. if you do its your own fault. but once the breakin is over, a couple rides. youll be awarded with form fit, more movement than when broke out of the box, and a boot you wont ever wanna be without the rest of your adventure years, i promise you that. ive done the mx world, then as i got older,,,25 lol. i moved to gncc for some years, still ride them but as more age came ive gone back to how it all started. my dad and i going where no other vehicle could take us, back to adventuring. mx boots will save your ass! bye now
After spending the last several hours researching a pair of trials/adventure boots as directed by a friend. I've been riding enduro, but decided to pick up a trial bike and hone my skills. However, coming to the realization based on this video which ultimately hammered home, staying with my Garne SG-12's they are my safest bet PERIOD!
I’m thinking of getting a pair of Sidi X3 Enduro… Tell me Hirdya Zamir, for light off road riding and mostly adventure riding, is it comfortable enough to shirt gears and brake easily for someone who has never used an MX boot before?i’ve only been riding a few months but have been an avid MTB rider all my life and rode a small scooter to school daily many many years ago. I’m wondering about how hard it will be to ride in the X3 as well as how comfortable it is to walk a bit as I like to get off the bike regularly and admire views and take pictures. Some advice would help a lot. I currently use the Forma Adventures but fear they have almost no protection at all in case even mu lightish Honda CRF250L had to fall in my foot/ankle
I have never paid so much money for boots as I paid for my first pair of motorcycle boots. After my first two hours of practising how to ride I dropped the bike, and the crashbar ended up on my left foot. The sturdy rubber sole of the boot took the force of the impact and I literally walked away from this first crash completely unharmed. Whenever I see a rider cruising around with his girlfriend and both wear shorts and sandals, I would like to pull them from their bike. Spend that money!!
First time I rode my bike with MX-boots I smoked my back brake. I wasn't used to the feel and I rode with constant pressure on my brake pedal. After some time my back wheel locked up. Had to let it cool off. But I'm super stoked with my Alpinestars Tech's!
I like your points about MX boots for ADV, but BUT... for the tiny TW200, we are actually using trials boots as it's hard to ride with traditional MX boots on the small bikes. We are using the Gaerne Balance line of boots.
Absolutely right on the mark. Speaking from a broken leg and nerve damage in "adventure" boots. Virtually no protection from a 600 lb loaded bike! I'll take wet feet and walking like a storm trooper over a broken leg and several hour ride out to seek help with a pain level of 12 again!! Cry babies be damned.
I couldn't get my mx boots to gel with my legs and feet, but once i put a hair dryer on them for a while ,they are alot better now,mx boots offer better protection 👍
I'm very late to this party, but I bought a pair of Gaerne SG 12's when I got my KTM 1190 Adv R. I rode them everywhere and noticed the benefit when going down hard in a wash out on a trail. Had it not been for the boot, I would have had a trip to the orthopaedic surgeon. The Gaerne to me is a comfortable boot, and I have spent an entire day in them, no problem. The one thing I have against MX boots, they are a hassle to get on and off. More so to get them off after a day of riding and I'm tired
I went for the Fox Instinct 2.0 Motocross boots for Off Roading and have Daytona boots for road riding, however I think I might wear my Mx boots more now :-)
After suffering a fractured Fib last month in my Sidi ADV boots, I am now considering something better, but in the 5 years I’ve had the Sidi’s I can’t not rate them highly enough. Comfortable & waterproof, they are solid. Not everyone that rides for adventure is looking to do single track on large beemers. I travel light as possible without all the weight of these larger bikes but still an off is an off, I did mine in sand, caught on a tree root or something, I don’t think any boot would have stopped my foot bending back 180 degrees but open to discussion on this, maybe an MX boot would have?
A good mx boot would have certainly helped I've stabbed my foot into the ground and caught it while racing in deep sand and never suffered from a serious injury. I would advice sg12's , great protection and very comfortable straight out the box.
I've crashed in my Formas probably 40 or 50 times, no exaggeration. The crashes have ranged from lots of little drops to a 30mph highside that even bent my fork triple clamps. They've absolutely saved my legs from being broken plenty of times. To say that they are not good offroad boots is ridiculous, but I guess maybe because I don't ride a 600 pound land whale and advertise for BMW, motocross boots are less necessary. It also helps being in good shape and wiry and able to get away from a bike in the random situations adv riders find themselves in. There are tradeoffs for everything though. In theory we should all wear one piece leather suits with the impact activated airbags, but instead motocross chooses plastic armor and jerseys because it's lighter and breathes.
The point of motocross boots is they limit rotational or crush injuries in a way that adventure boots don't. That type of injury is very common with off-road motorcycle riding.. Your analogy to mx gear is lacking in understanding. MX gear developed in the direction it did for two reasons. Firstly, body armour (bar back protection) does very little to protect actual breakages. It's helps with cuts and bruising. Secondly, you need far less abrasion resistance for mx than leather provides, as well as the issue of heat you mentioned. MX boots developed to protect the lower leg from off-road related injuries and that's what we're saying. We don't disagree that fitness, well being and general body control are incredibly helpful. Being able to crash well is a whole skillset and when mastered can serve as fantastic injury prevention. Bike size is also a factor and was a huge factor in the making of this video. If you don't ride a big ADV bike then your chance of injury may be different. As will your skill and experience level, type of riding. We're not saying the Forma or any other ADV boot are bad boots. It's not and they're not. We love ADV boots in the right situation, but more the point we're making is that dropping any size bike on your leg, or having an unfortunate incident carries a higher risk factor when wearing soft, flexible boots. That also doesn't mean we think you personally must wear mx boots. It's a choice and if we all have information and a great discussion, the decision can be more informed. Lastly, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. We appreciate it hugely. The Brake Team
Through experience I completely agree with all that you've said about MX boots and adventure riding. However, blanket generalization statements always have variations to the rules (in context of course). For example, all adventure boots are not rated equal and although the adventure boots at the upper end of the food chain are not MX boots at least one of them that I know of isn't so far off that it should be discounted. The Sidi Gortex adventure boots have saved my legs, ankles, and feet on numerous occasions but not entirely on their own. My first miss was on a GSA coming down a mountain in China. The right foot somehow left the foot peg and momentarily got caught on the rear tire. It was at that moment that I first realized that the boot had some vulnerability because I could feel my foot turn inside the boot ever so slightly. My remedy was to wear draw string type ankle braces (the same as one would wear if playing basketball or some such) to solidly hold the foot in place. Another time in Laos my foot and leg got pinned under a dirt bike and the same Sidi Gortex adventure boots saved my leg from being crushed. don't want to appear to be talking out of both sides of my mouth because I did go out and get myself a pair of Sidi Crossfire MX boots because as I said earlier, I agree with you. All I'm saying is if a guy is buying middle of the road adventure boots he doesn't stand a chance against top of the line adventure boots. In the same vain, all MX boots are not created equal as well.
We totally agree with everything in this comment. The reason we made the film was because we've met so many people riding really difficult terrain in remote places. Thanks for watching!
Just bought some tech7 enduro boots. I get what you’re saying about clumsiness etc. it’s going to be a learning curve trying the rear brakes and gears for the first time 😂
I am in the process of choosing trail-offroad boots. All the trail boots seemed to me "suspicious" no matter how apparent they were. Thinking about a 200 kg bike, I didn't see how they would protect me. So I started to look hesitantly at MX and enduro boots. Now, watching your video confirms what I thought, thank you very much. Just one last question: MX boots or enduro boots, and why?
They are the same thing mostly. Enduro boots typically just have a gripper sole for slippery ground. MX boots have smooth soles to slide on dirt better in corners. That's its.
Using tech5 each time I know i am going to hit more dirt than just a gravel road. Would not change those with any adv boot i tried. Could not agree more
This vid is 4yrs old so many more options out there. I just picked up a pair of Leatt 4.5 mx boots for NE ADV riding and they are super protective, very confortable and have an excellent hinge mechaniam for ankle movement but keep you from any lateral movement. $210 on Amazon so you dont have to spend $$$ for good protection. And any cons make up for a busted ankle, surgery, medical costs and being off the bike for months...
Thank you for this video. Got me thinking and looking more closely. Sidi Crossfires now. There is a boot. Won’t be looking back. Feel very vulnerable in my adv boots now, didn’t even realize it before.
Nice video. Keep your toes in. Late to trail riding but Craigslist found my boots, "Alpinestar 13" almost new Tech6 $75, nice guy too. Did snap a Tibia in them a year and a half ago, high side, cabin road, so they aren't perfect but they are great and would have been worse and all I wear on my 250 four stroke, haven't worn them yet on my new to me '13 1200GS but will start real soon.
Good video. I always enjoy your vids. Would you say MX boots can do for an RTW or Even a European tour covering both on and off road? I get the point about not being waterproof and needing waterproof socks . But i am used to my Sidi adventures 🙈🙈
Love my Forma adv boots had Astar Toucans & Sidi Adv both too stiff for me for all day riding. Take your point but I do less & less hard core riding these days so the Formas work well & surprise surprise waterproof. Unfortunately not everyone is still young & wants to abuse $30k bikes anymore. Tar with a mix of easy gravel works well for me these days.
Please do another video about this topic with some actual boot reviews. I've been looking and many so called MX boots have very little support so are a waste of money. They are very expensive too. Most manufacturers have enduro soles which might be more suitable to Adv riding. Also there are very few Leatt reviews, coupled with them being hard to find in shops, it make it hard to buy. Thanks for all the videos.
Hi Llewelyn having been with you guys 3 times now and hiring your MX boots maybe it’s time to buy a pair thanks for the great video see you all at the GS Challenge in May
Hi I have Alpinstars Tech series boots, ( Honda Ltd Edition, for the Africa twin promo)when i compare them to a full motocross boot, the only difference is the grip on the sole, as motocross boots are designed to slide, and the velcro instead of the top buckle. These are fully waterproof, and i do wear them all day, often. At the lower end of the market i would agree, but i think the top end are closer in terms of protection. Or is there something i'm missing?
Hi Steven, Thanks for watching. The Africa Twin edition boot is the same as the Alpinestar Toucan. They may not look hugely different from something like a Tech 7, Tech 8 or Tech 10 but they are. They degree of stiffness and protection are worlds apart. However, the Toucan is a great ADV boot, one of our all time favourites. They are easily one of the most protective, but a high end ADV boot is still significantly less protective than and entry-level MX boot and it's most apparent when you ride in them. You can read our boot reviews to get a better idea of what we mean, here - www.brake-magazine.com/category/kit-reviews/riding-equipment/ We have reviewed the Toucan, The Sidi Adventure and a few models of motocross boot. Again thanks for watching and for commenting. It helps us enormously.
I have not tried MX boot, but I found that my waterproof adv boots are not waterproof at all. My feeling is on those days that it is driving rain, you feet will be wet, unless you use shopping bags over your last pair of dry sox
I own both type of boots and I prefer the mx boots even for adventure riding, but there's no way in the hell I'm going to walk around in the crossfire's.
Greetings from Portugal! I choose the most well keept secret in mx boots, the "Shot X11", for adventure riding. Super comfy, its got the essential protection for 160,00EUR (2019). The music is too loud, i felt the need to turn the sound of and turn the legends on. Very usefull video. Congrats.
Interesting video. Made me think twice about MX boots. I wear Sidi Adventure myself for my GSA. And plan an RTW which I thought the ADV boots would be good for. But might have a look at MX boots too now . Thanks
Thanks for watching. It depends on what you're doing on your RTW really. If you're riding a big bike in remote places I'd seriously consider it :) Thanks.
Hi Llewellyn, I would like to buy the gaerne sg12 . I haven't been riding a motorbike for many years and being a short rider for my dual sport bike that I ordered and also being a beginner , do you think that with MX boots will it take a long time too get used to it,considering I will use the bike even in the city and on asphalt roads? In other words have I to begin with a sort of easy sensitive boots or can I start with MX boots? Thanks
Did an off road course and had boots provided. Really could not get on with them. Tried a couple of others but unable even to walk in some. Feel as if I have no feeling below the knee. The BMW adventure boots were comfy so went with them. Not ideal would you say ?
I would question your last point a little. Sure, ADV is about off-bike too but MX boots are made specifically to limit range of motion. Riding to somewhere cool then spending 3 hours walking/exploring, even in comfortable MX, sounds hard to me - but not having owned a pair, I can't say for sure. I am wondering whether to go with a lower-cost MX (maybe a AS Tech 3) where the safety is lower (than more expensive 7's/10's) but has the ADV benefit of motion and comfort - and will crash better than even expensive ADV boots. Basically, maybe a lower cost would be a better option for once :-)
Honestly Andrew, the point is that when you have a good pair of boots that fit you well, you will happily walk in them. MX Boots do limit motion, and are a compromise, there is no doubt, but the point of the video is raise the question about wether your over prioritising comfort instead of safety. There is little point in wearing a comfy boot if you don't make it where you want to be because of the boot. Some of the cheaper boots are very good for that, but sometimes they're actually a lot less comfortable. My last point is, if I was going to walk three hours, I would change footwear anyway. In our experience, ADV boots are marginally better at this, IF they fit you nicely but generally they aren't significantly better than an awesome pair of MX boots. The biggest mistake people make with MX boots is that they give up on the first hurdle. Boots like Sidi's X-3 or Crossfire 2, the Tech 7, Gaerne SG series or FOX instinct are phenomenally comfy. We all own these boots personally and more happy in them than we are in our Sidi Adventure's, Toucan's or anything else. We have all figured out OUR boot. The key is the right boot for you be that ADV, MX or Touring, not 'All MX boots suck." I hope that makes sense anyway! Llel - Editor
I just bought a pair of moto cross boots, first pair, they are stiff.just wondering about changing gears with .are they hard to position ur toe under the shifter to change the gears up.thats all I'm really worried about.
I always used my MX boots whenever I go cross-country... no issues at all, but I really wish those boots wicks faster $100 no complain about it good protection 👍.
dude. please normalize your audio for videos before publishing.. watching on laptop at night next to sleeping wife is a fail. loud music and super quiet voice.
Undoubtedly credible information I, too, wear Scott MX 550s when out on trails But pretty please, with a cherry on top, do something about the transitions The constant whispering interspersed by the bombardment from christian rock had ended up playing hob with my eardrums!!!
Guys, what do you think about SIDI Adventure 2? I have SIDI Crossfire SRS but I was in terrain even in RST Raptor 2 with my F650 GS on my leg without any injury :)
Sidi Crossfire from day one I started riding. Comfortable? Meh, I have a small feet, fits like a glove but waterproof socks eventhough they does get in, it ain't comfortable then. Squeaky when walking (don't care). How about tourism? Year ago I walked 12 km in one afternoon in them and if I didn't have trousers that folds in the boots and irritate my calf, I could do more. With srs enduro sole those few mm of extra height helps.
I'm just concerned about the heat absorbed by the boot because I get the heat stroke very easy. I really need a pair of converse on my pocket to recover. Do you guys know a trick to keep my feet cooler during summer? Sometimes I must keep riding under 38.5 celsius. Only the wind cools me down but in technical terrain is not possible to go fast so I get sick. I've almost died a few times already for it.
So what boots do you currently use? Some boots are much hotter than others. Stay away from boots with a booty. Choose light coloured boots, preferably white. Stay away from waterproof socks or waterproof boots. Some boots have vents built in too. We also saw Alpinestars make a custom mod a few years ago where they drilled some holes and covered them with mesh for hot riding. Lastly wear thin socks and make sure the rest of your gear isn't cause the problem. A well vented helmet, just an mx shirt or vented kit and make sure you're minimal armour. Wear a camelback and use a system like the USWE handsfree kit. That makes a MASSIVE difference.
As you mentioned in the video, no MX boots are waterproof, but are there brands more water resistant than others? Are the waterproof socks really efficient? I read that Gaerne are quite good on that aspect and read some owners of Tech 7 enduro who said water comes immediately inside. Waterproof is a concern for me because I was quite happy to have dry feet after having ridden 2 hours under the rain. I am looking for MX boots but in Switzerland it is hard to find a store that has these type of boots and when I find one, there is only 1 brand...then I have to drive a lot to try on several boots....and I am not talking about prices...😪
Thanks for the comment! Some boots are better than others but they are NOT waterproof. That's the reality. However waterproof socks are brilliant. We are fans of the Sealkinz brand. I personally use the Mountain bike long socks. They come up to your knee and so are better than waterproof boots in that respect. Also, Army issue Goretex socks work well. Waterproof boots are lovely in wet conditions and horrid in summer as they are too hot. It's a compromise. Can can give you some boot size advice if you tell us a little about your feet. Are they wide or narrow? Is your arch high? Do you have big or small ankles? What type of riding are you doing?
AI will have a look at the waterproof socks. Well, to give you an idea, I actually wear SIDI Adventure gore-tex boots with a size 43, and I am very comfy. From the extremity of the heel to the big toe, I have 28cm and I don't go in extreme enduro, I would say woods, trails, sometimes harder parts with a good slope. I would love to train in order to pass bigger tree trunks. But I do maybe 2 enduro trips per year. I will cross french and italian Alps this summer only off road with my GSA. I did already some off roading with it. And without mentioning the sole, MX sole or more enduro one?
Expensive premium ADV boots offer the same protection plus waterproofing. Yeah you gotta spend the $$$. If you ride desert, you can save some money buying an MX boot. Forma and Sidi offer nice ADV boots.
Mx boots are relatively waterproof ie rain or spray from another bike but thats as far as they need to go in that regard. In motocross if your feet are submerged in water then your doing something wrong
I enjoyed watching your video as I was asking myself this question about adv boots or mx when I bought my GSA LC and before that having broken my tibia wearing road boots...I tried first MX boots, several brands and didn't chose this option because I couldn't find a waterproof model (and it helped me several times on the road and off road as well). Didn't like the Forma because too soft. Then I found the SIDI Adventure gore, I have them for several years and did also enduro with them. They have this stronger reinforcement limiting rotation. For crash injury, cannot say, never happened (yet), but I found them more comfy than the Alpinestars Toucan gore-tex. Anyway, it is a personal choice but the SIDI could be a good alternative.
Nice review thanks. But then, in you opinion, when I go off road and willing a MX boot not too expensive but with good protection, what could be a good choice? Knowing that I go off road occasionally. For example, I am going this summer across the french and italian Alps off road.
I bought a pair of A-star Toucans (your review sez you like those too) shortly after purchasing my GS a couple years ago. I was wearing them when I had a slow speed fall on my XR650L, trapped the foot under the bike as I rolled, and fractured my distal fib. Doc said he doubts MX boots would have prevented the injury, but a more flexible boot than the Tooks could have made the injury much worse. These days I'm riding the GS less off road, preferring to play mini-ADV with the Pig, and considering a pair of Tech 7 Enduros.
Brake Magazine Firstly I had to learn to walk and get used to the weight and stiffness and a longer shift lever. But honestly now there like wearing pillows , there super comfy and walking in them a lot better now I won’t go back to anything but Tech7 now. Great boot Thanks for making such a great series and your father is a legend of greatness All the best
@@advrider7777 I got the tech 7 too and are great, very solid but still can't get used to the hard plastic bending over my thumbs it kinda hurts. And also my break lever is easily destroying the soft rubber sole y had to cover the lever with a piece of plastic
Good MX boots are very safe and also suck total ass. I’ve tried top of the line Sidi’s and cheapo Fox’s. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve wiped because of jamming down the rear brake because I can’t feel how hard I pushing down the lever. False neutrals? Oh yeah!
+SANDS78 Sounds like you either need a middle ground pair, with a little more flex and feel or you need to spend more time in them. That gets much better with time and you'll be able to feel everything going on.
I absolutely disagree with you, where did you get 85/15 ration? also, most of the time when you are on adventure-you need to go down to that river or run up that hill or stay on slippery surfaces, and most of the MX boots soles are stiff and have no grip. also, you said - there are none waterproof MX boots and I absolutely agree with you. but what if my adventure is 1200km a day including offroad and on-road, it rains the first half of the day and ill stay wet for the rent of the day. Adventure boots made fore adventure riding, MX boots made for enduro and motocross. you aren't gonna take sportbike offroad, are you?
If you're looking for a little more idea of what you should looking for in your boots choice, take a look at this article on our website. :)

Otherwise good vid.
my thoughts exactly
Deafening music. Tiny voice
If you're going to insert cuts of people riding with that music in the background, then you could at least make an effort to normalize the volume. It was so annoying to turn the volume up when you were talking, to then have to turn it down when the music came on, then back up again to hear you talk... Super annoying. Couldn't even finish the video.
Sorry.
Sorry JM.
LOL well I wasn't going to forgive you after only one apology, but after that second one I guess I have no choice.
Take if from someone who's wearing a cast for the next 2 months.
forma terra evo are trail boots, normal so,,
everyboot are made for their environment.. with compromise so,, doing dirtbike or road with trail boot is not cleaver,, doing enduro with stunt shoes is not too,, but try to stunt with mx boot its just impossible,, mx boot are to protect from torsion and choc,, road for long friction on hard sharp floor,, buy the boots for what you practice .. and stop listen ppl crap and bullshit,,
@@aranoilean5480but mistakes do not choose when to happen. What and how you are riding. I seen people drop their bikes on their legs on straight gravel. And I am pretty sure the force of the bike crushing your feet is the same despite what and how you are riding. There is no riding discipline, that cheats physics.
Can you share why you say knees and hips first? I mean isn't jacket the bigger priority compared to knees and hips?
@@sanketjain9320 Every time I've fallen off road, it's de lower part of the body that takes the hit. Either the bike falls on it or make something twist, etc. If you see Fortnine video about beginner equipment, he also says boots are some of the most important items cause the statistics show that lower body injuries are the most common in nonlethal accidents.
@@metschambel4074 Hey, I understand boots are the most imp. I was asking for jackets vs pants. In the case of touring and gravel roads riding at low speeds
I like most of your vids but the music blast in this one ended it early
Agree, SIDI X fire 3
Just started in ADV riding and now I know I will go with a good pair of MX boots! Thanks guys.
Thanks for watching!
Life is better while you’re riding
👍👍👍👍 thumbs up all the way guys.😜
Never thought about getting a pair til now but I also never worried about not being able to make it to work cause of injury til now. Good vid. Thanks
Awesome story! Thanks for watching Sean!
omg I couldn’t even finish this video. Please no more load music ever!!! Less is more.!!!
Rosa Freitag Totally agree :) Thanks for watching.
the tech 5 exist as well right in the middle
The very reason we made the video. :) Thanks for watching and sharing
Forma Dominators are proper MX boots as far as any higher end MX boots out there... These are NOT "adventure" boots by any means. In Forma MX range there are only Predator boots that are higher positioned than Dominators... Of course these are not in class of SG12 or Tech 10, but still has much more protection than some of genuine "adventure" boots out there.
hey guys, from a man thats worn mx boots for 25 years, when you buy your new boots. they are waterproof up to 3/4 your boot but anyway take your new ones put them on and find the deepest hole you can or garden hose. completely soak them while on and wear them around for an hr. like buying new shoes and doing this it will break them in. this will greatly enrich your transition if youve never worn a pair. geeze dont try to break in a new pair without doing this. if you do its your own fault. but once the breakin is over, a couple rides. youll be awarded with form fit, more movement than when broke out of the box, and a boot you wont ever wanna be without the rest of your adventure years, i promise you that. ive done the mx world, then as i got older,,,25 lol. i moved to gncc for some years, still ride them but as more age came ive gone back to how it all started. my dad and i going where no other vehicle could take us, back to adventuring. mx boots will save your ass! bye now
By soaking completely you mean up to getting water in through top? Or it's a prank?
After spending the last several hours researching a pair of trials/adventure boots as directed by a friend. I've been riding enduro, but decided to pick up a trial bike and hone my skills. However, coming to the realization based on this video which ultimately hammered home, staying with my Garne SG-12's they are my safest bet PERIOD!
I had troubles hearing the music, please turn up the volume when not talking.
Took your advise and got the Sidi X3 Enduro and Seal Skinz , Brake Mag is right about the comfort , keep up the good work
Glad that helped dude! My dad loves his!
I’m thinking of getting a pair of Sidi X3 Enduro…
Tell me Hirdya Zamir, for light off road riding and mostly adventure riding, is it comfortable enough to shirt gears and brake easily for someone who has never used an MX boot before?i’ve only been riding a few months but have been an avid MTB rider all my life and rode a small scooter to school daily many many years ago.
Love my mx boots... Ride off road loads on my tenere commute... Tour... The lot...
But the protection they give me is second to none!
Absolutely agree with you guys! MX boots it's my obligatory gear to ride off road and already saved my bones a lot! 😉👌🏻
Aplinestar tech 7 has a mx endro boot that is water proof . They just started making it in 2021 .
That editing of noise levels though.. :/
Wear my Tech 7s whenever I'm off road, although I fractured my fibula on a small fall while wearing those boots.
Great boot and sometimes, things just can't be prevented. :)
I fractured many of my bones by falling once while riding offroad on road boots. I now ride always as Robocop 😁
+B. Ashley Grimes Thanks for watching :) Hope that leg is better now too!
I couldn't get my mx boots to gel with my legs and feet, but once i put a hair dryer on them for a while ,they are alot better now,mx boots offer better protection 👍
Alpinestar Tech 7's. Great cheaper boot. That's how i roll
Awesome vlog, have a brilliant tour of Tasmania. Looking forward to more.
Thanks dude. :D
Our whole family use Formas, $500 dollar quality with half the price
Fully agree but try and get something with enduro soles I found MX ones way too slippery when footing through tricky bogs or ruts.
Totally agree
That's its.
@@BrakeMagazine thank you, I believed enduro boots were stiffIer laterally at the shank. Now it's clear.
Using tech5 each time I know i am going to hit more dirt than just a gravel road. Would not change those with any adv boot i tried. Could not agree more
Thanks for watching.
Alpinestar Tech 7 with Drystar. MX boot with enduro sole and waterproof.
I thinkbwe probably need to re-do this one. I also just got some 4.5's and they're really nice.
Thank you for this video. Got me thinking and looking more closely. Sidi Crossfires now. There is a boot. Won’t be looking back. Feel very vulnerable in my adv boots now, didn’t even realize it before.
Glad we could help 😊
Great video. The guy wearing the tech 10’s, did he have to change to an adjustable shifter on the 1200gs?
MX boots are possibly the best thing ever, looks ace, full of action, and just gets on with what ever you throw at them. Love getting dirty...
Tar with a mix of easy gravel works well for me these days.
excellent advice! I switched to sidi crossfire and gaerne SG12 some time ago, it's not easy transition though :)
Hi Llewelyn having been with you guys 3 times now and hiring your MX boots maybe it’s time to buy a pair thanks for the great video see you all at the GS Challenge in May
+Steve Preston Thanks for watching Steve!
Hi Steven,
Thanks for watching.
You can read our boot reviews to get a better idea of what we mean, here - www.brake-magazine.com/category/kit-reviews/riding-equipment/
We have reviewed the Toucan, The Sidi Adventure and a few models of motocross boot.
Again thanks for watching and for commenting. It helps us enormously.
Alpinestars just made the Tech 7 enduro dry star. The first waterproof MX boot. Going to order some
I have not tried MX boot, but I found that my waterproof adv boots are not waterproof at all.
My feeling is on those days that it is driving rain, you feet will be wet, unless
you use shopping bags over your last pair of dry sox
I own both type of boots and I prefer the mx boots even for adventure riding, but there's no way in the hell I'm going to walk around in the crossfire's.
what about alpinestars tech 7 enduro drystar? - mx watrerproff boots?
Yes. It came out after this video. Lovely idea.
Brake Magazine just ordered it :-)
@@rafalorawski4243 How do you like them? I love mine.
Congrats.
I have seen the X10 at a very good price at the moment and thinking about it... Are you still happy with your Shot and is the sizing normal?
@@SachaBernasconi yes, i do. For light adventure its the best bang for the buck. The size its fine.
@@manuelfvdias thank you
How do you rate Alpinestars Tech 7 enduro drystar in terms of being MX boot? They are apparently waterproof/
If you're riding a big bike in remote places I'd seriously consider it :)
Thanks.
Hi Llewellyn,
I would like to buy the gaerne sg12 .
Depends on what riding you're doing. Also, like everything adaptation takes time.
Thanks for the content but please adjust your audio levels between the clips. Your music is way too loud compared to the voice segments.
can mx boots be worn for street riding?
Could I use motocross boots for my CBR600RR Supersport?
I just ordered a pair of motocross boots I hope they break in easy my road racing boots took forever to break in I was so frustrated in the beginning
The key is the right boot for you be that ADV, MX or Touring, not 'All MX boots suck."
I hope that makes sense anyway!

I just bought a pair of moto cross boots, first pair, they are stiff.just wondering about changing gears with .are they hard to position ur toe under the shifter to change the gears up.thats all I'm really worried about.
because of this I changed my mind and I'm getting a MX boot! so thx!
Undoubtedly credible information
I, too, wear Scott MX 550s when out on trails
But pretty please, with a cherry on top, do something about the transitions
The constant whispering interspersed by the bombardment from christian rock had ended up playing hob with my eardrums!!!
Okay.
Level your audio bro! Am watching this at 4am and i cant hear your voice but the music part on the other hand will wake my neighbors!
Guys, what do you think about SIDI Adventure 2?
I have SIDI Crossfire SRS but I was in terrain even in RST Raptor 2 with my F650 GS on my leg without any injury :)
Now they sell a waterproof version of the tech 7! Which I think is a huge selling point for adv riders who want to got the mx boots path.
Agreed!
How comfortable is FOX COMP BOOTS 2019 is for a small distance touring and also a bit of walking around when off the bike
Never worn it sorry.
Do you think that some Adv boots (Sidi adventure, Astar Toucan) provide a decent level of protection, or are even those two below what you'd like?
Some offer decent protection. We like the Toucan and Sidi Adventure, however compared to a full blown MX boot they are very weak.
I finally went for SIDI Crossfire 2 SRS and I will change the sole with the enduro model
Which MX boots do you suggest for slippery mud road/terrain ?
Astars tech 7 Enduro, Sidi SRS enduro or Fox Instinct Off Road
Expensive premium ADV boots offer the same protection plus waterproofing. Yeah you gotta spend the $$$. If you ride desert, you can save some money buying an MX boot. Forma and Sidi offer nice ADV boots.
@Brake Magazine
Is anyone making a waterproof mx boot yet? Surely they will catch up to us soon?
Mx boots are relatively waterproof ie rain or spray from another bike but thats as far as they need to go in that regard. In motocross if your feet are submerged in water then your doing something wrong
Now there are Tech 7 with Drystar membrane frome Alpinestars
@@florianalexander9183 Love the Tech 7 Enduro Drystar boots. Bought a pair to replace my Toucans after I wore them out.
I see most of the people use adventure bikes to travel long distance. But it meant for pushing your limits to the next level
Yeah. Shopping now. Pilot? Fastback? XT? It’s good to have choices.
But since BMW does not make motocross boots, won't it clash with your'e cute GS outfits?
bitch
Oh Jacques, they do 😏😏
What about the bmw gs pro boots, how do they line up in the scheme of things?
Stiffer than a Victorian's ruler
@@BrakeMagazine 😀 is that good or bad in the context of protection etc
@@percusski they are protective. The sole is a bit stiff for feeling the footpegs but they will protect you a lot more than an adventure boot. 🙂
Great video and information, but the audio transition between A-roll and B-roll is extremely loud. Volume up, Volume down...
I agree. It was one of our first ever videos and I'd like to think we've gotten better 🤣
The Sidi is a good ADV boot. We did a full review of it here -> www.brake-magazine.com/rated-sidi-adventure-gore-tex/
These days I'm riding the GS less off road, preferring to play mini-ADV with the Pig, and considering a pair of Tech 7 Enduros.
the sound levels suck in this vid, it keeps cutting between quiet talking and loud music
Thanks for taking the time to tell me. No one else has mentioned it in the last 6 years.
canned my sidi adv boots which are great but after getting ankle injury ive changed and purchased alphinestar tech 7...... oh and leatt knee braces
How are you finding it? Great choices.

Firstly I had to learn to walk and get used to the weight and stiffness and a longer shift lever. But honestly now there like wearing pillows , there super comfy and walking in them a lot better now
I won’t go back to anything but Tech7 now. Great boot
Thanks for making such a great series and your father is a legend of greatness
All the best
Forma Predators are the best adventure boots because of the double hinge.
Biggest disadvantage of MX boots are that they are in general not waterproof. If you are going for a longer adventure this will be a bummer.
Yo meng I wear hiking boots I had laying around in the garage. Sack up homie
Thanks for watching :)
sidi crossfire 2 the best boots by far for my feet
Great boots!
