Great advice and tips for anyone starting out with routers.😉👍🏽 Those anti slip mats are awesome for many uses in the workshop, but can lose their grip when the get too dusty, if this happens just wash them in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and it'll be as good as new.

A trick for bent plug blades... Buy some cheap wall outlets. Here in the USA they can be found for $1-1.25 for a double plug. Then take your cut off wheel and make single plugs out of them and clean up the sharp edges. Now you can cover your blades safely while in storage for less than $0.75 each.

I see where you're coming from Jonny. Having said that, in most cases you only need to use the router for short periods of time so as long as your battery is charged you should be OK 👍👍

I used to work for a cabinet maker after school as a kid. I saw a bloke hurt himself with a router. They are one of those tools that don't look to dangerous. Not like a circular saw or chainsaw etc.... Which is the very thing that makes them dangerous. They don't stop spinning once turned off for ages if your stuck in the thing. Good video. I'm surprised Makita or any other manufacturer have not taken the time to make it easier to change the bit and treat it just the same way you would do with an impact driver or an reciprocating saw; just insert the blade or bit in as it immediately locks into place and then you are good to go....

I had a really nasty 2020 Covid lockdown accident with my router & cut off 2/3 of my thumb nail, it was messy & sooo painful! Clamping is underrated 🤦🏻♀️ kickback is real!

Great video Shane. Another way to remember which direction you are going is to put your Right Hand down on the table next to the project, as in your video the picture frame. Place your Thumb up against the edge of the frame any edge as long as it's the right hand, and look at your fingers, they are pointing in the direction to go on the outside. Do the same thing for inside the frame making sure that your right hand thumb is sitting against the frame, and again your fingers are pointing in the direction to go, if you draw an arrow for both you will see that the outside is anti clockwise and the inside is clockwise. Mate, you need re-record your video. You have changed the bit with battery plugged in at 7:08 and more. Conflicts the safety note which you have mentioned yourself as well. By the way, your video presentation is great!
I'm no stranger to power tools, but the router is one I have consistent difficulty with. The roundover bit routinely gives me strong kickback. I can't manage a long, smooth cut just strolling down the side of the board.
Great video knackers as always and I too use a non slip mat when routing, it's a cheap but a simple way to keep your work gripped without clamps which can get in the way. Look forward to your next video. 👍🏴
Only learned the power point / machine on switch the hard way. Even with a square base plate my hand router still spun across the bench. Lesson learned. Gota love the old hard starts. 🐯

But let me know what you think, I have a dilemma here: I've been on a Parkside 1200W plunge (8mm collet) which I absolutely dig, but the shape and size of the baseplate are awful, I'm unable to start on templates. Do you think it is wise to downgrade into a palm router (chances they all come with the 1/4" collet)? I'd love to make some Mancala boards as gifts, which need a dish carving bit, but I'm worried if the smaller motors would hande it on the long run... What are the bit limitations of these palm routers?

Great safety info covered. Your router is 18v x 4 amps =72 watts. I like my big router at 120 v x 14 amps =1680 watts. You get mare torque par watt with DC but i like power. My router has a 5 second soft start .It will not jump if turned on.

@@captainbirdsi3502 sorry to burst your bubble but you will never see a toilet spinning backward in the land down under......our toilet bowls are not filled with water like yours..... a small amount of water sits in the bottom and when you flush water runs in and washes away. Hence no spinning just a lot of agitating water......but if you do make it over, l can always fill the sink and you can watch that.....as for the drop bears - we had to add then into the mix because the rumour of the deadly spiders and snake just wont keeping enough tourists away

great video! I would just suggest using 4 or 5ah battery with this router, it is a bit higher load tool and 3ah packs use weaker cells so you might be punishing them a bit.
Hello from France, thank you so much for your video, the most instructive one I have seen so far. I have one question. I will be using the Makita hand router with a 3.17mm (1/8 inch) roundover router bit. I would like to have a very discreet trim on the sides of my first ever epoxy river table. I have no clue as to how high I should be placing my router bit. Ideally I would like to have an equal trim on the top and the sides. If I lower it to half of the curved part of the router bit, will I obtain this result ? Do you have a video demonstrating which hight settings give which results using the same router bit ?

Question for the expert (you): Would I be able to use my existing 1/8" shank Dremel bits, with a 1/4-1/8" adapter, to work with my DeWALT DWP611 palm router? Thanks!
My only issue would be if the 1/8" shank is strong enough to handle the much more powerful Router 🤔 Personally l would buy the bit that suits the machine. Better to be safe than sorry. 👍

Great tip. Direction of feed is the most common query with routers. Just check when you use inverted in a table…..

Mate, you need re-record your video. You have changed the bit with battery plugged in at 7:08 and more. Conflicts the safety note which you have mentioned yourself as well. By the way, your video presentation is great!

I'm no stranger to power tools, but the router is one I have consistent difficulty with. The roundover bit routinely gives me strong kickback. I can't manage a long, smooth cut just strolling down the side of the board.

Great video knackers as always and I too use a non slip mat when routing, it's a cheap but a simple way to keep your work gripped without clamps which can get in the way. Look forward to your next video. 👍🏴

Only learned the power point / machine on switch the hard way. Even with a square base plate my hand router still spun across the bench. Lesson learned. Gota love the old hard starts. 🐯

But let me know what you think, I have a dilemma here: I've been on a Parkside 1200W plunge (8mm collet) which I absolutely dig, but the shape and size of the baseplate are awful, I'm unable to start on templates. Do you think it is wise to downgrade into a palm router (chances they all come with the 1/4" collet)? I'd love to make some Mancala boards as gifts, which need a dish carving bit, but I'm worried if the smaller motors would hande it on the long run... What are the bit limitations of these palm routers?

Great safety info covered. Your router is 18v x 4 amps =72 watts. I like my big router at 120 v x 14 amps =1680 watts. You get mare torque par watt with DC but i like power. My router has a 5 second soft start .It will not jump if turned on.

NO silly...because we stand on our heads over here and for that reason the router bit spins in the regular direction
Would love to see a toilet spinning backwards and also the Drop Bears but air-travel to Oz is a bit of a problem right now.
@@captainbirdsi3502 sorry to burst your bubble but you will never see a toilet spinning backward in the land down under......our toilet bowls are not filled with water like yours..... a small amount of water sits in the bottom and when you flush water runs in and washes away. Hence no spinning just a lot of agitating water......but if you do make it over, l can always fill the sink and you can watch that.....as for the drop bears - we had to add then into the mix because the rumour of the deadly spiders and snake just wont keeping enough tourists away

great video! I would just suggest using 4 or 5ah battery with this router, it is a bit higher load tool and 3ah packs use weaker cells so you might be punishing them a bit.

Hello from France, thank you so much for your video, the most instructive one I have seen so far. I have one question. I will be using the Makita hand router with a 3.17mm (1/8 inch) roundover router bit. I would like to have a very discreet trim on the sides of my first ever epoxy river table. I have no clue as to how high I should be placing my router bit. Ideally I would like to have an equal trim on the top and the sides. If I lower it to half of the curved part of the router bit, will I obtain this result ? Do you have a video demonstrating which hight settings give which results using the same router bit ?

Question for the expert (you): Would I be able to use my existing 1/8" shank Dremel bits, with a 1/4-1/8" adapter, to work with my DeWALT DWP611 palm router?

My only issue would be if the 1/8" shank is strong enough to handle the much more powerful Router 🤔 Personally l would buy the bit that suits the machine. Better to be safe than sorry. 👍
