How to Propagate a Mother In Laws Tongue or Snake Plant through Leaf Cuttings

  • Did you know that a Mother-In-Laws-Tongue or Snake Plant can be propagated through division and leaf cuttings? While division does create a clone of the mother plant, a leaf cutting creates a solid green version. Plant propagation through leaf cuttings is a great tool to learn when it comes to learning how to garden. While the steps involved in leaf cutting is the same for other plants that use this plant propagation technique, it is very important to remember which is the top and the bottom of the cut.

    I put mine in water. They've been in water only ... for a month. There are NO roots at all. I'll try your method -- with rooting hormone. You didn't mention a brand. Thanks for the video. It's the best I've seen. Non nonsense and to the point.

    I don't dip because all of my plants grow in hydroculture. However, I have used the same technique and have always been successful every time.

    Great tips, my plant was close to my central heating were the pot was hot to the touch and the leaves are curling within themselves, how can I reverse the damage besides moving it?

    What happens to the “Mother” plant that you took the cutting from? Will new growth form from the cut leaf? If you plant a Snake plant into a new pot, and position the plant deeper than normal in the pot, will root grow along the submerged portion of leaf?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

  • @hotdoc007
    @hotdoc007 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I tried and the cuttings won't grow into new plants. It's been almost a year and they look alive and well, but new plants won't start for some reason. Do you have any idea what's going on?

    curious ... can you cut a huge leaf and root it so you get a huge plant more quickly?

    • @Carlosconga
      @Carlosconga 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rob Evans the short answer is probably not. It is possible for the larger cut to root, but a larger cutting means that it will demand more water and not having present roots to sustain a larger cutting means that it will probably die from stress during the time it is trying to form roots. Small cuttings and patience are the way to go.

    is it neccassory to dip in hormone ? where to get that

    • @rawmark
      @rawmark 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dinu cv No, you don't have to dip. I grow all of my plants in hydroculture, which is hydroponics for houseplants. So, all of my plants grow in a clay aggregate. I have rooted jade as well as snake plants in hydroculture. One thing I do, that many do not, is to create a temporary terrarium environment and that ensures success. After starting a new pot I will wrap that pot and base in clear plastic and tie it down. I leave it this way for about four weeks and this stimulates growth and always ensures success for me.

    • @shawnmclin3568

      Not necessary but it help the rooting process and the chances of success

    HI and thanks for the video. Does it matter when to plant ? Indoor. it's winter in Ireland

    • @TheWeekendgardener
      @TheWeekendgardener  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good day Channel 88,
      To answer your question, you should plant Mother in Law's Tongue indoors. While you can take it outside in the summer, it will not survive outside during the winter in Ireland. When it comes to planting time, it is normally better to plant any plant in the spring or summer but in this case you can do it anytime. The reason for this is the fact that while the Mother in Law's Tongue can be dormant during the winter, planting year round does not hurt it.

    I'm a little confused. Another video on TH-cam says that if the pointed tip is cut or damaged then that particular leaf stops growing at that height. Did I misinterpret the information ?

    • @Sveldtguy
      @Sveldtguy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doney Goodflower The leaf will stop growing once the tip is cut.

      True, the cut leaf itself stops growing. New leaves will grow from the cuttings.
