That's very cool, what have you got them planted in Billie? They are quite vulnerable and frail when young. I have to clean them often to keep the insects off. They seem to survive whatever I plant them in though.
@@SheffieldMadePlants You actually seem a bit shy, sad and reluctant in this video as if someone has forced you to make it. I would be terrified to make a video like this myself. Doesn't matter anyway as I am listening to the excellent propagation advice.
Maybe the oldest video of yours I've found, so glad you've got a little backlog available like this as it's just what I needed today. Also your confidence and comfort in front of the camera really shines through on the new videos when compared to your older ones. Excellent work, look how far you've come! Thank you for your videos. They are awesomely helpful. Propagating a snakeplant for the first time today. I am new to gardening and love indoor plants... thank you for every tip and video. I recommend you to all my friends and fam. Keep going!!!!!
thank you for your videos. it may be worth mentioning that propagating this plant by cutting will cause you to lose the yellow edge margins. the proper method of snake plant propagation in my opinion is via division for two reasons: 1. no waiting and 2. variegation/look of original plant is retained
Wish we could send pics of our plant kid. Rich you give us so much information. I have gotten much smarter plant parent. Just like moms talking to other moms that give us tips. Thank you again Rich keep on tea Bing us. There is no such thing as too much inf😇😁
Hi Billie here com usa. I have a snake plant that is over 50 years old that I split in half and they are doing great. They may out live me lol. You are the best teacher. Thank you for being you
Thank you so much Richard. I have a leaf that I want to propagate and I’m going to try out the perlite method, and hopefully I will have some success. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
A neighbor was moving out and broke off a pothos limb. She gave it to me and I put it in water. It's been over 2 months and nothing. Today I put it in rooting hormone, plopped it in soil and now we will wait and see. If it doesn't work it will be going in the trash.😅
I have a question. If I want to try my hand at placing the cuttings into a glass of water, do I still add the rooting powder to the cuttings? If so, each time I change the water? I really want to do it in water so I can gleefully watch the roots grow. Thanks in advance for your answers and for helping people like me learn how to care for plants. I'm beginning to feel confident 'I CAN!' with your direction.
is it ok if you haven't made any holes in the lid ? Am i missing something because in this case humidity will probably remain there forever, and wont be needed to respray , or am I getting it wrong ? Thanks and a Happy New Year :) May 2024 bring peace
Thank you I love your videos, this is a favourite plant of mine. May I ask you, have you ever taken cuttings from a bay leaf tree ? I’m growing one, and I’d like to take a cutting.
You need to do it in spring or fall. Take about a 4 inch nice newer (last years growth) strip the leaves from the lower part of the branch. Dip it in rooting hormone over all of the places you stripped the leaves from and the bottom of the clipping also. Tap the excess off. Use a pencil to poke a hole in the pot with nice soil in it. Carefully put the clipping in it. Push the soil around the clipping to get rid of the air. Water it. Keep it out of full sun and keep it moist. If you have a glass jar or something to put on top like a green house that would be great but not necessary. You need to do more than 1 because it doesn't always work and the more you try the more chances you have. Make sure you have at least 4 leaves remaining because they are still doing the work of photosynthesis.
The plant nurseries in my country sell snake plants in pots where the soil is completely dried up and pulled away from the sides of the pot. They look alarming but the plants are happy as can be. They really can get very, very dry without complaints.
Hi, very clearly explained video. I’ve watched many variations of propagation and am curious why don’t you allow the cuttings to callous before placing into perlite? Has this method never encouraged cuttings to rot? Also how deep is the layer of perlite?
I cut up a leaf and put it into a humid perlite box like in the video. Unfortunately after a week the box was dropped and the cuttings were exposed for a few hours over night. I've restored it now and put it in a safer place but I wonder will it still have a chance to root or is it doomed due to being disturbed?
I have a 20" snake plant leaf that I cut off because it was leaning totally horizontal (maybe from moving it in the store?) I put it in a little bit of H2O for awhile and have not had any roots. Can I grow it as is in H2O like your previous video even though there are no roots? Should I just put it in good draining soil? I really don't want to cut it anymore than I need to. Thank you. I have learned a lot from you.
Hi, Does the leaf that you cut from the mother plant grow back?. I want to add more to my mother plant so was going to propergate then add them back into the mother plant pot, would this be OK.
Hi How do you know when it's time to transplant your snake plants Putting rooting powder on and then sitting the cuttings in water does not make sense to me Wouldn't this wash off the powder?
Hello! Thank you for all of your videos, they`re amazing! I have a question, do you use the perlite again and again, just the same box and same perlites for new leafcuttings? Thank you!
I have put some cuttings in water, not too high, Change every couple of days, but bottom edge of some look like they are rotting. Anyone have ideas what I should do differently?
Hi! I just potted my snake plant cuttings into soil to propagate. I failed propagation box with perlite and failed at water propagation as well. Roots were rotting..😞😭 So i am doing soil now.. it is compost65% + perlite 35% ish mix and potted in terracotta pot. Also i dried cuttings for 2days prior to plant this in the soil… as I read this will prevent from cutting to be rotten.. How often should i water this? When it is half dry or bone dry etc.. i really do not want to fail this time.😢 if you can help me with this, that would be awesome. Thank you!
I rescued one of these from my workplace which I divided into two plants one large and one small they are heavily neglected with a lot of damaged leaves I'm hoping I can bring them back but some of the damaged leaves are in the middle and I am worried about dividing them further, the good news is in the very centre there are some brand new baby leaves coming through so I am going to be patient before any more work I think
@@firstnamelastname6193 No they were left in the stockroom neglected and dying and were to be thrown in the trash. they were offered to other staff members and nobody wanted them but I appreciate the negativity 🏆
That will produce a new plant however, the plant it will produce will be a green not variegated snake plant. You must get a rhizome to produce a look alike.
I believe, you will not get baby plants with yellow outlines Okay, this is last year video so you would have the result video. May I request you to share.

Hello from Greece. Today -01-12-2022I propagated my old (20 years) sansevieria (snake plant) of my office via division in 3 pots
Hello 👋 Nice plant to propagate
I bought one of these plants a few years ago, now i have five of them from cuttings
Great stuff 👍

I think it still works but I’d just do it the first time. You don’t need to change the water that often
Hello. I have a question. Do I have to let snake plant grow higher and higher? Will I kill it if I trim it? Thank you.
You won't kill it but you'll have ugly leaves
thank you for your video😃

It's fine without holes. Yes it tends to not dry out so much so will rarely need a spray. Have a nice NY!
Do the blunt edges of the cutting ever heal and become pointed over time?
Nope sorry

Thanks Wendy. No I haven’t but sounds like a great idea. I’d imagine you need a stem cutting underneath a leaf node.

Yeah I hardly water mine to be honest. Very drought tolerant. They bounce back though!

When you pot the cuttings after they have roots, how often would you water them?
Hi, very clearly explained video. I’ve watched many variations of propagation and am curious why don’t you allow the cuttings to callous before placing into perlite? Has this method never encouraged cuttings to rot? Also how deep is the layer of perlite?
Thank you. I find that you don't really need to. Perlite is probably 3 or 4 inches deep.
Can you use Sphagnum moss also to propagate?
Yep
So we don't need to let the cut callous over? Good to know.
Ya , you don't say if u let them callus first then plant or just cut it n plant it? Very comfusing
Do u have a update video on these. I’ve just done a cutting from my friends plant
Sorry not a video.
If I use a glass container, could be bad for the plant?
Not really
Useful to know. Thanks 🙏

Once cut I don't think that leaf regrows. You could add it back to the pot to fill it out.

What is rooting powder? I haven't ever heard of it. Maybe it's not common in my country. Can you name its chemical ingredients?
Google rooting hormone. You should be able to get it by mail if not in your country by a different name.

No that suggests rot and needs cutting out
What if you have no rooting hormone? Will this still work?
Yes will work fine

Hard to say without info

Give it longer. Takes a few weeks
How long do you think? Please
Can take 4-6 weeks or longer

Yeah it’s anti fungal so helps with rooting

One is enough
