Those are homemade salted fishes being dried…no problem with bugs n all as they’ll be fried first before gets eaten…Nasi Kandar is Penang’s specialty, and a tip when you go to eat nasi kandar like the locals normally do, choose white rice instead of beriyani , ask them to mix the curry gravy, not to forget the black gravy…for meat, choose daging hitam (black beef) or ayam bawang (onion chicken) instead of fried chicken, egg omelette ( my preference) or boiled egg, raw long green chili (smokey taste), okra or cabbage or both to your preference…you can have the more expensive meat like lamb, tiger prawns and squid, but i suggest you try this combo first…happy eating n enjoy!✌️

Up there also have a lot of food to be try out. Later at evening till midnight - you can walk around ‘Persiaran Gurney’ for local food & also walk around ‘Batu Feringgi’ at their night market. So you might wanna check it out yourself.

malaysian drinks usually prepared with the sugar syrup at the bottom, so you really have to stir them other wise you'll be drinking sugar. Plus you can ask for less sugar or no sugar.
the rural folk have the meal in aproper/traditional way. Like nasi lemak and roti canai always for breakfast. Fried noodles/kway tiau/ laksa in the late afternoon. Lunch usually buffet style /pick and choose already prepared meal, and for dinner a freshly cooked meal like fried rice, etc.
Go and visit paddy field nearby (1-2 hr ride by bike), the atmosphere is totally different.
As for the suggestion below to visit kedah , you can ignore them. Apart from langkawi, the other places (pantai merdeka, Gunung Jerai) are not accessible by public transport (or you have to wait for 2 hrs for a bus which may not stop when you flagged them down)...lol
