Hey Brent another great video. The people that have an issue with Chesney is mind blowing. Let’s take a look at the three most successful coaches in the HISTORY of SU. Schwartzwalder - head coach at Muhlenberg a D3 program before coming to SU, MacPherson UMass head coach a D1-AA (FCS), yeah he had NFL experience but never higher than a position coach. Pasqualoni a head coach at W Connecticut St another D3 before being hired at SU as an assistant and then a head coach. All I have to say is history tends to repeat itself. My top 3 would be as followed: 1-Chesney 2-Cignetti 3-Candle
Dick MacPhearson was the head coach of the New England Patriots from 1991-1992. He didn't have just NFL assistant experience. He may have been an assistant in the NFL prior to his tenure at Syracuse. Did I misunderstand something?
Everybody was high on Mullen including me but deep down I knew he would cost to much. That is the problem. We want to have the success of a power 5 team but we either can't afford or are too cheap to pay for proven coaches on that level. Whoever we hire, be it Chesney or Brown what happens if they do win? Then they sign with a higher paying program. There is no economical way to do this. If you wanna dance, you gotta pay the band.
You said exactly what I was thinking...There's a reason why Mullen has been fired by FL and Miss St. I wasn't really excited hearing he might be the next HC in Cuse. I'm intrigued by Chesney but hasn't seen or looked into him much. That Fran Brown story was pretty cool !
Mullen was never fired at Miss. St. He did very well there and that landed his next job at Florida. Yes Florida did fire him after few years. Just stating fact.
I will miss Dino, he is a great man. But, the wheels must keep moving. IMO they should do whatever it takes to get Jamie Chadwell. There are currently zero DC’s on earth who know how to stop his offense. Chadwell is the guy who made Coastal Carolina a household name. They even have a freeze option package! His teams play tough D too. Chesney would be my 2nd pick. For this program, you need a young hungry up and comer. If it’s anyone but Chadwell or Chesney they should encourage him to try and get Chadwell’s OCs. If it’s Chesney let him run the same stuff he’s been running. Hopefully they keep Nunzio. I hope Dino enjoys his extra time with his family.
Problem I have is Wildhack and SU administration. All I heard was lip service last week. Said all the right things to the fan base. I just do not think SU will fully support any coach that comes here. SU is only interested in that ACC money. If Wildhack's standard is 7-5 that's a red flag in my book. They will hire the individual that comes the cheapest. I still say Babers came here as one last stop to build his resume, for a top power five program, not SU or any other middle of the road ACC team, and for him unfortunately it didn't work out. Babes had plenty of time as will the new hire. A roster full of 3 stars is not going to beat (other than occasionally) a roster full of of 4-5 stars. Even when SU develops a very good player they will be raided in the portal. I will be shocked if Wax is on the roster in 24. Hope I am way off base, time will tell.
If Syracuse decides to keep Nunzio as the head coach... Brown could be hired as an assistant and a recruiting guru as well since he has assembled 2 National Championship teams at Georgia...
Sounds like Chesney could be a decent hire since he has coached against and competitively against 2 Syracuse Opponents from this past season-( Boston College and Army)..
Who we hire to be the head coach is very important. But who he hires to be his coordinators is at least as important. And who he hires as position coaches is also very important. Those guys do most of the recruiting coaching and strategizing. Hiring a less expensive coach may free up more money for the staff and that could help the head coach to become more successful.
It's official....Fran Brown! This cat has an IT factor! Can recruit not only Jersey, but PA, GA, FL, and his Baylor ties can pick some cats from Texas. Chesney is a good coach and candidate. But can he recruit heavy outside of New England? And I've never been sold on Dan Mullen. Too much money and too much baggage. The number of players Florida players who skipped that Cotton Bowl 2021, and him flirting with the NFL, spoke volumes.
The reason why fans are dubious of these lower class coaches is, we have a history of hiring "potential" coaches & others with no head coaching experience, & we see the results over the last 20 years. It has yielded HORRIBLE results, & if we keep doing the same thing while expecting a different result, that is INSANITY !!! Let's try something different! & I resent what Emily says that Syracuse is a bottom rung school. Yes, we have hexperienced a bad period, but Syracuse is a top 25 winningest program in FBS. The next coach needs to be a big name who tells the naysayers that WE ARE BETTER than bottom rung! We will be the premier program in the Northeast!
Dan Mullen would have been the biggest name Syracuse would have ever hired. That doesn’t necessarily mean success though. Jimbo Fisher was a national championship winning coach at FSU but was a mediocre coach at Texas AM. I do wonder why Mullen is no longer a candidate… Just my opinion but maybe these potential reasons? 1. He was too expensive for Syracuse to hire. 2. Syracuse liked him, but has another candidate whom they are more interested. 3. He didn’t interview well. 4. He doesn’t have desire to get back into coaching yet since he is making good money from his Florida buyout. We can only speculate. I would guess it’s a combination of 1 and 2…
I think Al Golden would be a good hire. I hope nunz is on the staff in some capacity. Bring Fran Brown as DC. How come we don’t talk more about Sean Lewis?
I'm excited about Chesney and the spirit he could bring. The way Mullen went out in Florida including rumors he didnt care about recruiting made me not interested in him anyway.
Mullen would have been good because nobody would have bought him from us if any coach comes in here dose good he will leave to take the money look at Duke , Monroe did it to us for nfl 🤦♂️
@@robertjutton6079that's exactly what I was going to post at first..just offensive line three times like they are the magic words..you read my mind orange brother!🏈🍊
Not to be negative but Chesney is all risk no reward. He is 7-4 at a FCS level school right now. He’s never even been an assistant at a FBS level school. If he is hired and isn’t successful Wildhack has sealed his fate. If somehow he wins 7 or 8 games in year 1 or 2 and proves he can coach at this level he uses SU as a stepping stone. Mullen checked all the boxes and at his age I think we would have at least had a chance to keep him.
Thank you did not want him we need a coach that wants that title no one remembers the 80’s and 90’s teams nationally ranked like people really happy with a bowl game and not even a major bowl

Good point Brent with Fran.
NJ native
Georgia currently and everyone said we had all kinds of admin at the G tech game... maybe ?
Yes, that's what I heard as well. Fran is an intriguing candidate for sure.

@@Teeman44Dan Mullen can coach,he's just lackadaisical in recruiting
Dan Mullen was never coming to SU Football Program after being Florida Gators Coach.

If Syracuse hires a no name unproven coach in the P5, they better be right this time, or they will lose the fanbase for a LONG TIME !!!!

Curt Cignetti or Willie Fritz (veteran coaches who'll stay for a while and not use the Cuse as a stepping stone) or bust.
I'm excited about Chesney and the spirit he could bring. The way Mullen went out in Florida including rumors he didnt care about recruiting made me not interested in him anyway.
I still think it is hard not to hire Nunzio if he wins the bowl game since Nunzio did guide Syracuse to a bowl...
That’s bad if Al Golden isn’t interested
