    You make the BEST VIDS on YT. So very informative and helpful to us neophytes. With your help I'm really understanding the finishing aspects of making a fine blade.

    i can only thank from the bottom of my wanna-be-a-knifemaker heart. without you guys on yt and fb i wouldnt know where to start!
    Btw: I am still drilling holes into my puukko sticktangs and the most expensive carbide i ruined was 40euro, plus it got completely stuck in the handle and really secured the tang, so i drilled a wider hole on the surface and put a mosaic pin in there to cover up the mess. never sold the knife of course...
    thanks buddy!

    Another excellent vid! Now I feel much more confident about trying my first hidden tang knife, considering I have a bunch forged out and just laying around lol B)

    Thanks for the kind words guys. BTW- I know there's very little sound. I had to edit out a lot of radio in the background to keep from violating yt rules. Plus, that way you can just listen to whatever music you want while my video is playing anyway. ;) :D

      Nick Wheeler Whatever happened to the technique of "burning in the grip"?

    • @HostilePride
      @HostilePride 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +pinz2022 I know this question is over 1 year old, but typically when you get to this stage you have already heat treated the knife blade, and heating the tang affects the tempering that is done after heat treating (which just leads to you annealing the tang and potentially the blade.)

    Thanks for sharing Nick. I still struggle with hidden tang sculpted handles.

      Ben, IF you're struggling with some aspect of making, then I know it's just because you haven't got a lot of practice in (on whatever it is) just yet... because I know you can do/build whatever you set your mind to! :)

      Nick Wheeler Um, Nick. When you're grinding the handles is when you should be wearing an industrial respirator. I've read those exotic handle materials can make some murderous dust.

    Hi !
    Thanks for sharing this vidéo !
    I have a question : what is the name of the tool with 3 teeth you use to broach the handle ? Did you build it by yourself ?
    Thanks for your reply !

    Hey Nick, awesome videos. I just took the ABS handles and guards class and it changed the whole way i make knives. The question I have is how do you finish the handle without messing up the guard? Thanks

    Hey Nick what was that first tool you used to scrape out excess wood for fitting the tang? and where can I get one. this step in the process gives me fits! thanks for any information you can offer! love your work! it's unbelievable!

    I always wondered how you got the pin in. Thanks for sharing

  • @lsubslimed
    @lsubslimed 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I forgot to ask.. didn't you used to drill the pin hole with the handle material already glued to the tang and just use a carbide bit to go straight through all material? Also, I don't think I saw it used in the vid, but don't still you use that jig you made that clamps to the ricasso in order to drill "square" holes through tangs with tapers? Thanks :)

    • @NickWheeler33
      @NickWheeler33  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Paul- You're right, I used to drill after glue-up on a knife like this, but the 1/16" bits want to deflect. I busted a $17 carbide bit and that prompted me to start doing it the new way. I do still used that fixture for oddball shaped handles (stag,ivory,etc) and tapered full tangs. :)

    Hey Nick, good video. Trying to work along with you. Thanks for the help. It's only my second handle, first being a two piece full tang. Much easier. My first attempt is a fail and I can say for sure you do need the 'end mill' bit. I didn't have one and thought I could clean out the slot with a regular bit. NOT. Keep posting!

    • @NickWheeler33

      Nope, that was made by Mastersmith John Perry. Unfortunately, I have heard rumor that he quit making them. :(

    you should edit all the sound and redo the comment and add the music give the same attention to your videos that you gives to your knives and you will get many more suscribers my 2 cents

      There's a little bit...! ;) LOL... I don't like working without music playing in the shop, but then I have to edit out most all of the audio to avoid violating music rules here on youtube.... :/

      Nick Wheeler Ughgh don't you HATE that!! I have had a video up for over a year now that was just fine and in good standing with the music I used in it (usually youtube would automute a vid the second I upload it if it's under a specific copyright, or it will say that it's in violation or etc.) and now all the sudden, a year or so later, they automute it. Including the actual sound in the video itself, so now the vid kinda sucks :( lol And all of youtube's free song choices pretty much suck too lol Oh well.. It's just more annoying for me because I don't like to talk in my vids, (I feel weird) so they can be boring without some good tunes.
