Wood stain is a really good way to give color back to the antler after you cut the brow tine off.

Cool. I would suggest adding a guard or end plate between the blade and the horn. A plate will give it a neater look, covering up the apoxy or a guard will too and protect the fingers. A plate can be made of almost anything, even a solid flat piece of horn or bone.

Very good work. Those Mora knives are excellent ... As someone else thinks below, I would put some kind of stop on the handle, to prevent the hand from slipping towards the blade ... those blades are very dangerous and their edge is deadly, I use those knives to carve wood and every so often they eat a piece of finger ... It's a pity, I'm from Argentina, and that brand doesn't sell knife blades to make the handle ... I send my regards from Buenos Aires

Another good thing to do is to grind/sand a rough area on the tang to give it extra grip when setting in the epoxy. It's far better than a smooth polished finish.

Nice video. To avoid accidentally damaging your blade, or cutting your fingers, tape the entire blade with painter's tape.

LOL. My sharpening gear consists of waterstones, oilstones, KME kit, strops, AND... Bandaids and Liquid Skin. ;) That's how you tell the guys who have been sharpening a while. Same for the guys making knives and gear.

Try burning antler with propane torch gives it a nice brown Color do this before u epoxies it to blade
Lovely work, planning on trying to make my own in a few weeks when I go to my grandparents. Have most of my knifes and blades there! But I'm not so sure if I got any antlers, you know if you can like buy them online somewhere?
I’m sure there’s places online that sell them, but you could also try asking in local hunting forums/groups.

Looks awesome. How well does the epoxy hold though? I've never messed with it before.
It holds up really good, you gotta keep the antler oiled though. If it gets too wet it’ll swell and crack the epoxy.

Hey old man stino, question how long will that epoxy hold? Like will the blade start wiggling after a year or two or should it be good for a long time?
There's different strengths of epoxy but they all should last a long time.

@@OldManStino It turned out good, but I actually like the smaller blade on yours better. I bought ten of the smaller blades years ago and have not used one yet. Since the guy I am giving it to is an Elk hunter, I thought the Mora 2000 blade would be better at processing Elk. My handle is also darker, and I like the color of yours better.
A guard would of been a good thing but probably hard to make look right using antler
Try a little walnut stain on the antler to blend in the part you sand off

I’m working on my own dear handle knife I already have a piece and don’t really have the options of choice or cutting away pieces I don’t want or breaking the antler.
How much of the metal do you leave for the handle to fit depending on the length of the blade or must it be almost the same size as the blade itself
The blades should have a tang that you just need an Antler big enough to fit it in.
I have a question Could this prosses be donne with a full thang knife i i were to decide to change the handle on one of my knives that ad rivets ?
I've never done it with a full tang, but if you can cut it clean in half and drill the rivet holes I'm sure it'd work. Just spread a little bit of epoxy on each side before putting new rivets in and it'll be solid.
Hello there. Just wondering : how do you make sure the blade stays dead vertical during solidifying of epoxy ? If I have a hollow bone handle, especially, there is quite some chance of the blade leaning one way or the other as long as the epoxy is liquid.
Normally the fits are tight enough that I can kindof get the blade to stay in place, but you can also mix more saw dust into the epoxy to thicken it a bit while it sets. I wouldn't think it would affect the strength of the epoxy too much but it might weaken it a bit.
Depending on the brand/type of epoxy It'll start thickening but still be workable after a certain amount of time where you'll be able to re-adjust the blade

@@stefanmischke4191 you can also make a little jig to hold overnight till cured. I used glued popsicle stick to make a square frame around it and used Saran wrap poke the blade thru like you do when making popsicles in an ice tray

You don't need diamond bits when working with antler? I heard they were a 5 on the mohs?
I had no clue about the mohs scale, that's cool. I can't see any antler/horn being much higher than a 2/3 on that. I used white tail so maybe some antlers around the world are harder.
Should have took it Dremel tool cut a few Groves in there, where are you cut off that point and then use a little stain on Q-tip, then seal it

Exactly how I made nearly 300 of mine. Even guaranteed them because of the epoxy being so tough. It was the kind used to repair golf clubs, but anyone doing this PLEASE wear breathing protection. That antler dust is worse on my lungs than my asbestosis and black lung.
Exactly! And the antler dust's smell is reason alone to wear a respirator....like a thick cloud of burnt hair

That’s a good idea, I never thought of that. Might be hard to collect it though
How hard is the resin when dry? I'm wondering if it will actually hold up if I use the knife.
I think there's different grades of epoxy, but even normal epoxy is pretty dang strong. I had an epoxy handle on a kukri that I beat to hell and the metal tang broke before the epoxy did.

to be more authentic,,soak bone over night or more to soften the marrow,when its soft you shape your tang into a spike leave 1 hole for pin and your all set.measure so tang hole matches with bone and drill hole
Right around 3:00 I force of habitley blow on my screen because of the dust on the vice. I felt like an idiot!
I just did this last night but when mixinh in the sawdust my resin turned out more grey than brown and it sticks out. Any ideas on how I can fix that/ cover it up. Leaving it isnt an option as its a gift
Probably depends on what kind of wood saw dust you use, you can try wood stain on it to darken it
It would be very easy to make a simple brass ferule or bolster to cover your hole in the end of the antler so the epoxy is not seen.
I agree, and think that would look better. Also a straighter antler would need a smaller drill hole which would cut down on the amount of epoxy that would need to be seen at the top.
how thick is it? in inches i wanna make one but i need a strong thick water resistant knife

Most of my work is manually by hand (rarely machines), so the idea of using something simple for fixing the blade would be nice.
You’re not gonna find anything else that’s better than epoxy. But in the old days I know that they used trying tar pine pitch type of glue but there’s no way it’s going to be as good as Epoxy trust me I’ve made hundreds of knife and I sell them. You can mix your Epoxy with your antler shavings or wood or metal shavings.
@@flintrichards945 Thanks for the input! :) I used epoxy yesterday, but it can be sorta messy to work with. While I did, I was asking myself if I can use bone/wood dust to turn the transparent epoxy into something that matches the handle, but since I wasn't sure, I simply went pure. Good to know that it is an option! Btw, my question above was just aimed at old glue techniques. I was aware that the old stuff can't compete with epoxy, but since my current knife is just for cutting mushrooms in the woods (so there won't be much force on the blade), I thought it might be nice to use a classic glue technique, since I made everything else in a classic way (except the blade), with non-automatic tools as well, you know. :) Cheers!
StereoDeth yea epoxy is messy but have some alcohol there it is a good solvent for epoxy . I remember some where seeing a video on making a old type of glue I am share you could find something that would work. Good luck with all your adventures.

Should work as long as the tang fits in the antler, really comes down to how it fits your hands and your view for the knife.

@@T0YCHEST antler is pretty light, so if your blade and tang are well balanced I wouldnt think you would. Unless you just want a little extra style on your knife.
