I absolutely love the two of you. I started watching for reliable advice following a recent TKR, you both helped enormously and six weeks following surgery I have 140 degree bend. Thank you so very much for your help and advice in medical matters. You have a fantastic approach to medical issues, easy to understand, practical and with humour. I am now going to try IF to help with my orthopaedic issues. From South Wales UK very best wishes to you both and please keep on with your great work, you are helping so many and I am grateful for the help that you have given to me.

I'm a fan of this. A little over a year ago, I began intermittent fasting. I'm 5'81/2" tall and at the beginning, I weighed 248 lbs. I now weigh 171.4 lbs. My weight fluctuates from 170 - 175. So, I have achieved stasis. The main reason I like it is, I can eat whatever I want and as much as I want and still maintain. I was eating between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm. Then I'd fast for the next 16 hours. I never feel hungry now. At first, while I was getting used to the schedule, I did get hungry, but after a week that went away. Now often as not I fast 18 hours a day. I just don't feel hungry. I haven't suffered any ill effects from this. Also, I was on bp meds and I've gotten off those too.

Thanks for this! Years ago, I woke up one morning and found that I had no desire to eat sugar anymore (I had been a junk food junkie). In a few weeks I dropped 20 pounds, from 160 to 140lbs. I also didn’t eat snacks as much. So I don’t think it’s just how much you eat, but whether the calories are slow burn or rapid burn.
Oatmeal with flaxseed grain is your friend. So ate carrots and broccoli.

    Great subject Docs!
I've actually been watching someone on TikTok who is doing intermittent fasting. It's been very interesting to watch and he explains the benefits.
He will fast for 18-20 hours and has a window for eating. He eats a lot of protein and vegetables and even has dessert occasionally.
I hadn't really thought about it but I've been doing the same thing. I don't usually eat in the morning and have a late lunch.
I sometimes have a light dinner. But I've learned not to overeat because it hurts my stomach if I eat too much at a time.
I don't do this necessarily to lose weight, just to eat enough to keep me going.
This type of eating is easy right now because our summers are so brutal! I'm not crazy about cooking or eating hot food in hot weather.
The biggest benefit for me is not gaining any weight. I know I can adjust what I eat to actually lose weight.
My sister gets upset with me because of the way I eat. But she's an insulin dependant diabetic and has to have more structured meals.
I would love to see a video on the Keto diet. Some of my nephews are currently on it. They are starting to lose their hair and having other problems. They won't listen to their mom/grandmother and take a break from it for a while.
The weight loss is incredible but at what cost! I'd love to hear what you have to say about it! You give us great facts and explain the process!
I was actually a little nervous when I saw the title of this video. Wasn't sure of the outcome and how you felt about it.
So the next time my sister fusses at me, I'll just give her the facts! I'm not diabetic and I know when my blood sugar is low. I also feel better when I eat smaller portions!
Thanks for sharing another enlightening and informative video! 👍

@@kat2878 Hi there! I start my day around 6:30 am and have coffee with MCT oil. Then usually another cup (w/o MCT) around 8. That can hold me to around 2 PM. Simply reducing calories never worked for me for weight loss. If I eat fewer calories but they’re all simple carbs (vs. protein, for example), my blood glucose will surge, my insulin resistance right with it and my body will store all that excess glucose as fat. It’s not as simple as calorie counting.
In the last 18 months I’ve lost 58 pounds and reduced my glucose through intermittent fasting (12 hours a day) and reduced emphasis on carbs in favor of proteins. I’ve reduced my A1C from pre-diabetic levels to normal (5.3) and also eliminated medications for blood pressure.
What I eat is as important as how many calories I intake, which you eventually mentioned.

So if a person does this type of fasting, I am assuming a person would be eating reasonably and not this high fat low carb thing...right? I think I misspoke...this person I am referring to uses the word ketosis....how can that be healthy?

Intermittent fasting is potentially bad since when you starve your body, you burn fat and muscle, setting yourself up to gain quicker when you go back to a normal diet. Reduced calories over three meals is better as you are not (hopefully) burning muscle too. My wife lost a lot of muscle tone doing this (intermittent fasting) and it is kind of scary. It is far harder for her to lose fat now. I know I'm going against the fad but it is my opinion. Good luck however you decided to lose fat.

in my case, IF helped me so much to solve my overeating. i eat a lot and often 4-5x/day and snacking throughout the day. i turn to food for comfort and coping mechanism to daily stressors i realized my health is at risk i decided to put a stop with my unhealthy eating pattern.

Not eating 3 or 4 hours before bed time will allow time for your last meal to digest before bed.
This will improve the quality of your sleep and reduce the need and urge to wake up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
It allows your body time to focus on healing and repair during the night rather than focusing on digesting food.
It also extends your fasting time by adding the hours before sleeping to your hours asleep.
The longer you go without eating will allow your body to shift from burning glucose to burning your stored fat.
You will wake up in the morning a fat burning machine.

I’ve been a time restricted eater for over a year now, really helped me drop my pandemic pounds! As the docs say it’s basically a way to reduce calories and for it to work you need to eat well in your eating window. I don’t obsess but focus on protein, good fats and fiber at my meals. “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants” as Michael Pollan says. ( which may even leave room for the occasional chicken wing for Dr Zalzal).
The banter between you two keeps your videos entertaining and relatable, and never “over produced.” Thanks Docs.

Thanks docs! I have been intermittent fasting for almost 2 years. 8 and 16! At first I had trouble not being hungry in the morning but not so much anymore. I didn’t really do it to lose weight. I still eat 3 normal size meals but no snacking.

I am 53 and wanted to age gracefully and I advise to cut back on all sugary foods and carbs/processed foods etc 4-5 days before you commence your IF journey. I have trained my arse off in the last 4 months ie 3-4 intense gyms sessions per week. Cycling daily on top and IF'd and have lost 19 kg (108 - 88 kg) in 3 months. Join the gym and you will learn to love it. Only down side is purchasing all clothes accept socks!!!!!!!$$$$.
My eating window is 3 hours max. Working towards 48-72 hour water fasting . 21 hour fasting is dirt easy. Hopefully 48 wont be too bad.
    Good luck!!!

I've been on I.F. for 18 months. Go 12-14 hours eating nothing. I always used to snack. I've cut that out. I think I have a healthy diet with v little ultra processed foods and plenty of a variety of vegetables. My BMI has come down to 24. Was 27/28 before. I still eat the same amount. I'm super happy.

That goes against everything you said in this video..

Thank you for all you very informative videos. I got on to intermittent fasting a couple of years ago. (16 hrs, 2 days a week) Interesting side benefit is I don't get hungry like I used to. It does help weight loss. I also weaned myself off of PPIs (which I had tried and failed before) and I think intermittent fasting was instrumental in enabling me to do so.

Eating once a day is enough. Eat early in the day. In the evening, when I need to got sleep, I can feel weak from hunger. I usually stuff my stomach in my one meal, and it takes hours to be decomposed. It's not like you start fasting immediately when you put the spoon down.
There is no suffering if you refrain from eating only for the time when the sun is up. Drinking is not important either if you sit inside a rich home burning petrodollar. Although being in proximity to a fridge without anything to do is another factor.

As long as you are insulin _sensitive_ -- you *cannot* burn body fat while your insulin levels are elevated.
focus on reducing the carbohydrate intake.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

So yes persistently high insulin levels are a problem. If you are not eating and your glucose decreases your insulin will follow and transition to fat burning
