You also have the dealer add-on cruise control by the turn signal stalk, which is pretty cool. Fourth gear going out on the A4LD is pretty common because the 4th gear solenoid and torque converter lock up is controlled by an electronic solenoid. If you replace that, it should work fine.

I love this little truck. Its great you were able to save it!! We had a year old '83 but it didn't work out well with a car seat and two adults. Wish i had a truck like that now.

You should make a video on all the cars and trucks you own. We haven't seen the s10 Dakota white Lincoln or the square body crown Victoria in a while. There also a lot of corrolas we haven't seen?

There are a few new cars I wouldnt mind owning. But as far as trucks go, just give me something simple and a bed that can get dirty. Save all the plastic crap for economy cars.

Jay, I had a 90 Ranger with the 2.9 that went over 200 K before the transmission finally just started leaking from every orifice! I had it rebuilt for $1,200. and sold the truck to a friend. He drove it another 50 K then sold it off to a kid who was thrilled to have it. I'll bet that little 2.9 hit the 300 K mark!

  • @wartax5

Hey Jay, i love these Rangers, i had an 86 supercab identical to yours. It was 4x4 and silver, i worked at a bodyshop and got the bottom 1\4 and top 1\4 painted Burgandy so that left the middle sliver, it was soo cool. I got the ''FORD'' on the tailgate bodyfilled and i put ''Ranger'' in Burgandy on the tailgate, wich i thought was so cool. I also took the 2.9 v6 out and put a 4.0 in wich made it go twice as fast. I had the Ranger for 10 yrs till i sold it.
Jay i watch your videos all the time and love them, keep up the great work, Bill from Calgary Alberta Canada :).

Man I miss my 2.9L Rangers. I've had several, only one auto, with the A4LD trans and my overdrive didn't work either. I also had the same surging/stumbling idle too and it was my IAC needed cleaned out because the plunger in it got gunked up. Otherwise those 2.9's will last you a long time if your good to them. I always changed mine with high mileage oil and a quart of Lucas every oil change!

Nice love seeing good used vehicles brought back to the life of the road! 2.9L sucks but that body is sweet! Disagree on the 89 to 92 rangers, they rock. It was a bone stock 91 Ranger which I learned to drive. Regular cab short bed, black 2wd with a 5 speed manual, vinyl bench seat with no factory AC.I love seeing them on the road, if I ever see on like the one I learned to drive on I will buy it!

Your Ranger STX is in excellent condition for a work truck! Has indeed some dents and scratches, but looking at the age it's nothing serious and a more original budget truck you won't find soon for cheap. I think that you have to replace the exhaust for one with mufflers in the future. This seems to me a bit too loud for the highway. There are cheap dent repair set that don't require painting. Maybe you can try to see if it works on the small dents. They just pull them out. Maybe use some heat water too. Furthermore, a very nice and still very original truck. And definitely worth the gearbox swap!

  • @aries749
    @aries749 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Great truck, thanks for the video! These are great little trucks! Miss my '86 2WD long bed V-6 Ranger. The 2.9 V-6 is a great, torquey, durable motor. Never had any major issues with mine in over 200k miles. The Mazda sourced 5 spd. manual my '86 had, was kind of a weak link, especially if you towed a lot, like I did. Mine blew up 5th gear at about 150k miles.

Own an 01 ranger 3L V6. Is so fun to drive. Seats are comfortable. It loves the highway. Great first truck. Far different than SUVs and cars of the past. You got real luck with the condition thats in. Look at the thrush line of mufflers. They have any loudness you want. I just saw they had an M80. That is thick compared to the cherry bomb. They also have mufflers with 2 ins and 2 outs.

Great catch! Rangers are a fun truck!! Muffler? What?? I'd cut the pipe, insert a 30" Thrush and put a 45 or 90 deg turn out just before the right rear wheel. Thrush canisters are a lot quieter than a Cherry Bomb, yet they are both straight-thru glass packs! Go figure!!? I ran Thrush for years because you can stick in a canister where you can't install a Turbo muffler; size and off set pipes...
    Have fun!!

Love this body style. I've owed a 83,85, and a 87. All was 4wd except for the 87

Fuel pressure regulator, and vacuum leaks will give you those idle and stumbling issues. Those mirrors aren't just on STX models, and the trouble with the STX is they weren't all the same, some had certain items, some didn't...like some had a roll bar with KC lights in the bed, most don't.
That's a pretty clean truck really for as old as it is. Yes the Ranger badges, they were originally chrome plated...err...chrome painted, that stuff comes off so you'll see a mix of both, more base models had black badges, but most times they've fallen off anyhow. Those visors are garbage. Your ranger doesn't have the mounting holes anyhow, and those things cause roof leaks.
The huge downside is the A4LD automatic transmission, those things are why many Rangers and Bronco 2's end up in the scrap yard. When I got my Bronco 2 Overdrive was kind of there...it would engage but as soon as you would press the accelerator to speed up it wouldn't downshift from overdrive back to 3rd it would kick the transmission into neutral forcing you to manually shift the transmission out of overdrive back to 3rd gear then it would be fine, I drove it a month like that then took it to AAMCO and had it rebuilt at a cost of $2400, however according to them the rebuild is with steel parts rather than the cheap junk that Ford and many other rebuilders put in to try and save money which in the end means you save about $150-200 up front but your transmission fails about a year later because the cheap rebuild kits are just that cheap.
The premium sound system would also include an amp in the dash to the left of the right side dash speaker...without that amp you just have the standard sound system and trust me the premium sound system isn't that great either...I have the Premium sound system in my 1988 Ford Bronco 2, its not premium, not even close LOL.
The intermittent wiper feature in my Bronco 2 was bypassed because it was shorted out somewhere in that mess of wiring causing the wipers to run continuously, in the bypass process it also removes the park feature in the wiper motor, so whenever you turn the wipers off they stop wherever they are on the windshield but not a problem if you just wait till they're in the right position to turn the switch off.
Cost me about $500 to repair the AC in my 88 Bronco 2. Had to get a new compressor, accumulator, orifice tube, o-rings, etc. Plus the vacuum pump, ac manifold gauges, leak detector dye, refrigerant, and other odds and ends. That was just about 2 years ago that I repaired the AC and its still working great, the only issue is I don't have the recirculate feature, not sure if that cable is seized or if the door is jammed haven't had the time to dig into that any further.

Looks good. Only thing I would add, other than getting a muffler on there would be a pair of E-code headlamps to supplement the driving lights. That way, you'll have a much better beam pattern than what the sealed beam units provide.
