Tumbling Fused Glass Cabochons for Fire Polishing, Fused Glass Tutorial

Fused glass cabochons can get a scummy bottom from the fiber paper or shelf primer, and devitrification on the top. To clean these up, you can use sandpaper or diamond pads, but an easy way is to tumble them with silicone carbide grit.

Hi. A couple of questions if you don't mind. When you fire polish the cabs, you are still going to have the bottom sand blasted, right? Not that it would matter a lot on opaque pieces, but on cathedral pieces, I assume you would have to fire polish both sides?
Also, what is the purpose of the already tumbled pieces? What do you feel that adds to the process? Thanks

Hi Herb. When I fire polish I do so on a shelf that has been sprayed with boron nitride. Yes, the bottoms of the cabs have been tumbled as well, but when polishing the flat shelf with just boron nitride, and not Thinfire, produces a much finer texture. I don't know of any way to fire polish both sides so they are nicely polished all over. The already tumbled cabs are just for filler. If you don't have enough cabs to fill the barrel to about half way, I use some filler cabs to make up the quantity. These get reused and reused as needed. It is also a good idea to have a mix of sizes. Hope this helps.
