@@talphazero1036 I have to say that trading the rook for a pawn was a bit premature. He could have done what most of us would do, and that is to put the rook behind the pawn. What a pleasure to finally see the infamous KNNKP endgame in a real game, and with a decisive result! I did drills in this before but the chess com computer didn't switch up the moves, so it wasn't very testing practice. Pulling this off against a GM and against the clock... Sheesh. Hats off to Mr. Harikrishna. Though I expect many of us were a little disappointed that Mr. Maghsoodloo didn't let it play out to that very pretty checkmate after b8=Q

It's incredible to see these types of endgames in real games between 2700+ super grandmasters as well, checkmating a GM with 2 knights is just bonkers as you can't force a mate with 2 knights. Harikrishna just showed a Zugzwang endgame where even with a pair of knights. But with his good coordination with minor pieces he could still get to checkmate!

1:40 I wonder why white captured a bad bishop, I know this is elementary chess theory, but in this position white's knight seems to be better than black's light square bishop (although it is placed in awkward square), because he is limited by his own pawns. About the endgame it is a true masterpiece, although it was still able to draw this position, black somehow made it a win with a spectacular mate with a two knights (mostly by opponents mistakes). Not that I would criticize it, Akiba Rubinstein mostly won in equal endgames due to blunders of his opponents, I guess in this way chess works.

Since White lost anyway, this may have been his only chance to win.

"congratulations on realising this is actually a forced check mate in 22 moves"
...yeah... Sure... How could you not see that, right :3
Antonio today is like those engines that call your move a blunder because you didn't see a forced mate in 27

King and two knights vs King and pawn from the worst possible position with best play is winning in 96 moves, buy before move 50 you must force the pawn to move or capture other pawn or piece.

At 11:59, the move Kd8 can be considered a mistake - Kb7 should be played. While Kd8 is good for a draw, it requires more precise play than Kb7, a case in point being the position at 12:16, when Kh7! is the only drawing move. In contrast, the defense is much simpler after Kb7. White's plan is to stay near the a8 corner, where the remaining White pawn, which can't be captured, serves a useful purpose by taking away the c6 square.
Playing around with a tablebase, there doesn't seem to be any losing positions where the king is on or near a8. To play for a win, apparently Black has to drive the king out of this corner, and if the White king stays in the a8/b7/a6 area, the best Black can do is use his king and non-blockading knight to push the White king out to b4, where he has plenty of open space. Trying the trap the king now will be problematic, especially with the 50 Move Rule looming.

I was wondering if it would be bishop and knight, or two knights vs a pawn. So much to take away aside from the interesting endgame!
