@@katerinapatiniotis5598 I educate myself every day. Middle Eastern music means of the are of the Middle East. Middle Eastern music means also the music of the ancient people living there like the Sumerians, Hurrians, Babylonians, Akkadians, Assyrians, Anatolian people(like the Hittite), the Ancient Egyptians, and many other people, Middle East could include the Greeks too as the modern term is quite irrelevant as contact between the Greeks and the Near East was very expansive, seen also in the colonisation of Cyprus. I hope you read more about it before commenting in such an absolute way, καλή συνέχεια εύχομαι

My friend you are amazing! Yes! : The magnificent singer Eleni (Helen) Vitali, was absent many years from singing...she had drug problems, from the early 90' s. Her husband was also musician, they had a son together. She has Gypsi roots, she started her career at 1970 and like Glikeria (the second legendary singer, hugging her), have cooperated in the past...the vocal practicing you find strange comes from Greek roots: the music instrument is callled "clarino", is similar with the flute, but more "heavy" in sound...she makes vocal ups and downs because Greek traditional music is composed to be sang like this ..the reason is absolutely Greek: It comes from the Greek revolution era...it' s about pain, mourn and sadness because of the "pressure" that Ottomans put in people those days... I hope I explained something to you...😊

As I can see, you are already informed about this old traditional song. And I am impressed that you have the interest in music wherever the music comes from (in this one,Greek).
A little help for you to understand Greek music, I must say that there are many different types. Even in traditional music. As I saw in other comments, they already wrote about Byzantine music, that is to say, there is a lot in this genre. Byzantine music is deep among the Greek roots, and you can find it to this day everywhere. Greek church music, for example in its hymns, is Byzantine.
But there are also other influences. One of the main ones is the geophysical environment. In the cities and villages that are mountainous, you will find melodies and dances in slower rhythms and "heavy". In cities and villages of the islands you will find melodies and fast dances, allegro. The environment one lives in, affects its entire spectrum. There are soooo many types that probably some one has to wright down bunch of comments to describe all of them. Just think, that there are 10.000 different dances in Greece! (I am not lying, believe me, just google this if you don't)
That was just a small taste of the music of this place..
I would like to introduce you to another epic Greek performer. Charis Alexiou. Right in this song .The first performance is not hers, but in my opinion, she nailed it! It's been nearly 30 years since that performance, and I still get chills every time I hear it.
The composer is the Yugoslavian musician Goran Bregovitch ( you may know about his music, as he is the composer of the O.S.T. in film "Arizona Dreams") ,and the Greek lyricist Lena Nikolakopoulou.
P.s. (another one influence is between nations in Balkans. Much common music styles in North Greece and South Serbia, where Serbs are neighbors.)
As about the song, because I noticed how annoying was for you without the songs lyrics,I will try to translate them here for you.
    If you hear it,just enjoy!

At nights you enter my dreams
as if you came to your own garden
and even if my wings grew
I'm not missing by your side
    ..If it is god..
    Thousands of angels in white
    branches of oblivion they share
and from my body, like stars
    children of you, are breathtaking
If it's god....on fire you should burn
and from my tear, drink fire
heart you cannot forgive a lifetime
if it is god..and if anyone loves me
if it is god.. and if anyone loves me
All of my friends for years now
couples they became , they built houses
    only on me still misses
    this truth without a roof
If it's god....on fire you should burn
and from my tear, drink fire
heart you cannot forgive a lifetime

Here is a rough translation of the lyrics, it's a bit of a grim song, however, it's a transitional song (unknown composer and lyricist) about the outlaw Greek guerillas who went to the mountains to live freely and fight the Ottomans. I'm pleased you liked it. They tricked me at dawn in spring, and told me the grim Reaper won't take me.Oh poor me I went to the mountains, high in the ridges. I see the grim Reaper coming, on horseback. There is nothing I can do, I know I will die.

Song is about a man in Greece being tricked one early morning to climb a mountain, the trick is that when he reaches the top, he see's the Grem reaper on a horse between trees at a path. They say at the end " Don't take me, death, don't take me, because you'll never bring me back.

The vocals depict the words of a Greek warrior during the Greek War of Independence against the Ottomans, expressing his determination to fight to the death and vowing not to yield, for if he falls in battle, he shall not return.
I'm Greek but listened to this for the first time, this is marvelous.
    Here's the translation:
"The dawn of spring, the nightingales mocked me
They mocked me and told me, that death won't take me
Don't take me, Death, don't take me, for you won't bring me back
Here I am, black as night, in the mountains, high in the peaks
I see Death approaching, riding on his horse
What should I do, what should I do, when I think that I'll die"

The nightingales fooled me a spring's dawn
they fooled me and told me, the boatman will not take me
Don't take me Charon, don't take me, because you won't bring me back
So I went out as a poor man on the mountains, high in the Korfovunia(Highlands)
I see Charon coming, on horseback
What should I do, what should I do, as I think I'm going to die

    Therefore, poor me, alas,

What shall I do now, woe me, when I think that I will die?

Hey Nick, I want to introduce you to another great Greek singer through a short story. I saw an interview with Helen Vitali (the one with the gum in her mouth) and she was telling a story about going to a house by the sea owned by Stelios Kazantzides (the best ever singer that lived in Greece) with her father when she was a little girl. There she met Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. and not only once but many different times through the years. They used to visit Stelios ingognito just to hear him singing. Now I cant verify that but i don't think she had any reason to lie. Anyway here is a link for Stelios and i hope to see your reaction for him . Keep up the good work ! P.S. Marinela was his wife for some time and they were singing together! th-cam.com/video/KO_r9N3zyqg/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/nyiKEHM4Ssk/w-d-xo.html

I went up high on the mountain
And, my son, I laid down to sleep upon a rock.
That rock, my son, was the tomb of a kleftis*
    Of a young boy!
And I heard his voice from within,
    Take my body, my brother,
Take my body and in our village lay it to rest.
*kleftis was a man who rebelled against ottoman rulers of Greece back in the 1800's. The song is a traditional moiroloi, mourning song, from Epirus.

Not pitchy. The scale of the song is oriental because let's not forget that Greek culture thrived in the East, nowadays Turkey.
However many modern Greek singers westernized those scales so they can play them on guitar piano etc. Typically, clarinets and violin players play them with micro tones and some particular great singers too.
The scale is named Arast with a part in Nihabenti (Nikriz in oriental music)

Hello! Greetings from 🇬🇷 Greece ❤
So, the musical instrument you mentioned at the beginning of the video belongs to the category of wind instruments and is called "clarinet" (in greek "κλαρίνο"/ ~spelling: kla-rí-no) and belongs to the traditional greek musical instruments.
    Have a great day!

The first singer, Eleni Vitali, stayed away from music industry for many years since she was addicted to pills and that is why her voice is not as it used to be. She is one of my favorites singers though with a very warm voice!

Never heard of drugs. Eleni Vitali always had a deep voice though and is just getting older, as we all do, and her voice changes, like everyone's.
