    I live in Central Cali about 1 1/2 hours from Yosemite. Due to the ongoing drought, there are a lot of dead or dying trees and dry brush. So, wildfires are commonplace in California. As such, it is not uncommon to see soot on your car from the nearby burning fires. One thing that they do to control raging wildfires here, is light backfires.
    I also lived in Los County during the 1990s when we had the Topanga Canyon fire (1993). It was close that the air was horrible, and I could literally see the blaze from my balcony.
    Then less than one year later, we had the Northridge Earthquake in 1994. I lived in the epicenter. Buildings in my neighborhood literally crumbled. My brother and I along with other residents from our apartment complex slept in a nearby park until it was safe to go back into the building.
    I'm thinking that no matter where one lives, he/she has to deal with SOMETHING. But God is good.

    The lucky part is our houses and boudary walls here in Namibia are build with concrete instead of boards or wood like in the states. Otherwise it would be more dangerous

    One of the ways to control/prevent the fires is to burn the dry grass yourself.
    Hence a random fire can't start since the grass has been burnt.

      In Nigeria we use this method, we never have random bush fires.

    I live in the moutains of central New Mexico and we have a wet and dry season, as well. Wild fires are a real concern during dry season and we have to stay on the alert. I have even taken volunteer fire training classes to be able to better protect my homestead.

    We have the same issues here in Southern California, A Co-worker who once traveled to South Africa and Namibia told me a years ago that the climate and terrain in Southern California is very similar to that of Southern Africa specifically Namibia. Yes, when that happens here, they do the same the controlled burning and fire breaks. So happy that it caused no damage to you guys' home.

    No lie… Fire freaks me out. As an 8 or 9 year old girl, I saw my father catch on fire while trying to relight a supposedly out barbecue pit with a quick squirt of lighter fluid….but turns out the fire really wasn’t out! The flame shot up the fluid stream, his hand, his arm, his back, and he took off running! Fortunately, the water sprinkler was on in the front yard, and he survived, though he was scarred for life…and I was terrified of fires! So I’m not throwing any shade your way, and am totally impressed by the calm and cool manner of your Hubby and MIL, and the people of Namibia! They know what they’re doing!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

    Ironically who would have thought that the Namibian fire department was indeed made of chilled arsonists😂👍🏿🔥
    All jokes aside happy new year to you and your family mrs. Kaylan😊🎆 besides it's always a pleasure every time you bless us with one of your Namibian adventures it's like receiving a letter from a family member who left and lives overseas.
    That being said I don't know exactly what have your county put in place as far as stormwater runoff channeling systems regardless since your neighborhood is fairly new I'll assume you guys don't have any therefore I would advise you and your community to look into more eco friendly more durable proactive solutions in order to increase your water table capacity by creating a network of french drains, swales slot drains and ponds through the landscape which should help keep the vegetation a little bit greener instead of barren like avoiding wildfires in the process
    Keep it up with the good work love you...❤✊🏿🌍

    Your video reminded me of a friend who went through a couple of wild fire episodes in California but the second was in 2018.
    They had to evacuate their entire neighborhood, leaving just about everything they owned behind because of the severity of the fire that burned nearly 1.7 million acres, and damaging over 23,300 structures and nearly 100 fatalities.
    my buddy lived in the town of Paradise. This area was hit hard with about 85 people loosing their lives.
    Wildfires is extremely dangerous and deadly.
    Thanks for sharing and I wish you and your family safety in the midst of these fire incidents and good hearing from you.
    I reckon you people could install a well and have water hoses nearby to spray water in the event of fire around your immediate property.
    Peace!

  • @Nubianette
    @Nubianette 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    It’s great you had that street between the empty lot and your home. I’m in California, and we have a fire season. When I was a kid, we had more controlled burns, before the season started, in the developed areas. People became anti fire, and it stopped. Bad idea. We also use goats and sheep to clear grass. Now, there’s an agency, that inspects neighborhoods, and if there’s a lot of wild grass, you get a written notice with a date to cut it down. If you don’t, the city will cut it, and send you a bill.

    • @AfroAmericaninAfrica
      @AfroAmericaninAfrica  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Wow, this is fascinating to read! As I was rewatching the video I thought to myself there are probably some negatives to too much fire prevention grass cutting? Will have to read up on it. Thanks so much for sharing your perspective and for watching!

    • @Nubianette
      @Nubianette 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The problem with burns, is the additional air pollution. But, if we humans decrease the unnecessary air pollution, the smoke isn’t so bad. Fires can also be protective in forests. Grasslands, it happens naturally and can add to the land’s fertility. So, in California, they use controlled burns again, where it makes sense. What you said about snakes is also true. It can keep them in a concentrated area, where you can tell your kids not to go.

    Your concern is understandable... I saw the hawai fires flowing across roads like they were liquid ... That was just out of the normal. Maybe because of extreme wether in some parts of US ...
    As kids we started alot of fires around the estates (intentinally at times to just distabilize rats and admire their little inroads in the bushes after the fire had burnt )
    Thank God the plave was surrounded by cement/streams or they would have run wild.
    It was probably little kids playing house and cooking with real fire😂

  • @The__Watchmen__

    As a teenager I used to live in the suburbs of Saudi Arabia with my parents. We had a large house with a massive garden, nearly half the size of a football field. One day while playing with the neighbours children we lit a match on a fist full size of dried grass, just enough to hold in your hand. In less than 2minutes our entire backyard was ablaze. In addition to the water hose, other neighbours frantically rushed in carrying buckets of water. I guessed their house was threatened too. It was a learning experience, and I had a new found respect for fire, even the tiniest ones.
    Also if the possibility of bush fires causes you anxiety, have you thought about investing in a thermal sensor. It can detect high heat and fires & alert you. Some companies use it alongside smoke alarms.

    I hate to hear of your near misfortune, dear sis, but praise God you and your family prevailed in such trying circumstances. It must be distressing and anxiety-ridden during each dry season. I can relate, living in the desert-adjacent area in east of Los Angeles. We are in a high wildfire risk area and have had close encounters. Nonetheless, you are an admirable, resilient lady. I have spent time watching most of your videos and will complete them all soon. I cannot get enough of your grace, candor, humor and transparency, all while remaining humble, grateful and respectful of cultural differences. I just love your family! As an American, I have seriously considered a move to the Motherland. At present, family circumstances make it seem improbable, but one never can predict the future. I believe the longings of my heart and soul exist for a purpose. I want to commend you on your awesome storytelling, along with detailed accounts of what life is like for you in Namibia. You are gifted in your delivery! Please know you are appreciated and I hope to see much more on your wonderful channel! Blessings always from SoCal, USA. 🇺🇲
