Pokemon Musical Bytes is a collection of songs from the Pokemon series which aren't quite a full musical, but are still themed around the games themselves! Through the month of July 2022 we are proud to bring you songs about some of the Legendary Pokemon throughout the series!

Arceus: giratina accidentally broke dialga's shrine but dialga immediately blamed palkia so now they won't stop fighting and giratina is crying about how hard it's going to be to get them to stop
It is kind of funny that for the other box trios, you have:
Rayquaza: created for another purpose, bound to be a balance because it was needed
Giratina: created as an inevitable counterpart and balance, but locked away for its own crimes
Kyurem: the fulcrum of the scales, split off when the scale was shattered, lesser than its counterparts
And then you have Zygarde, created solely to be a balance, but whose role was expanded when he wasn't needed there - and even then, he's barely ever needed for his expanded role, because even when the balance of nature falls out of whack, pokenature usually rights itself before Z can even find the snooze button.
I really love Yveltal's "If you mess with the balance of life and death I will personally murder you." and then afterwards Xerneas tries to make that sound a little bit less, God of destruction like.
Why do I imagine Yveltal pulling a gun on humanity while he says that and Xerneas just slowly lowers the gun?

I love how Yveltal isn't depicted as some evil destroyer, but as an agent of Arceus's will doing their job, even if they're villified for it
Its bassicaly like angel and demon but Yveltal are not really that demonic its just that if you annoy him in its sleeping states it get angry and destroy everything (just like in the anime Diancie and the death Cocoon)

@@flourinacup8710 And you are right, these two pokémon (as well as zygarde) are taken from Nordic myths. Xerneas is Yggdrasil, the tree of life, Yveltal is Hraesvelg the bird of death, and zygarde is Nidhögg, a snake that gnaws on Yggdrasil to preserve the balance.

It's oddly adorable that the song begins with them introducing their counterpart before themselves.
Unlike Groudon and Kyogre, who are constantly at eachother's throats, Xerneas and Yveltal clearly hold a deep respect for eachother's roles.

It also makes Xerneas kinda creepy in its own right. If your life never ends, all you do is decay. So death is necessary, on top of making room for the next generation. (Funnily enough, that's actually the entire point of Darksouls.)
@@cheese_vviz Zygarde will only fight both of them if they're disrupting the order by fighting eachother, or if any of them are being held captive.
Xerneas and Yveltal don't want to fight eachother, they know their roles and they're dedicated to keep it, no matter what.
Xerneas knows it can't kill Yveltal, Yveltal knows it can't kill Xerneas. Zygarde can, but it won't since that condradicts it's entire role.
it's a mutual understanding that each are important, as there is no point in life without death, or vice versa.

Xerneas representing life: Voice sounds almost motherly the origin of many lives
Yveltal representing death: Voice sounds rough and scratchy like many lives before their inevitable end
And then there's Zygarde.
I almost had trouble understanding Yveltal’s lyrics without the subtitles.
Yveltal is always interesting as far as a Pokemon themed around death goes. Their mentality isn't "I am death and I am to be feared and hated" but more "I am death and I am simply part of the natural world." Despite their scary design and theme they aren't really a malevolent force, like how a ton of death gods are portrayed in modern median. Especially since they seem to have no beef with Xerneas and if anything they seem to work together to preserve the natural order of the planet. Really cool and unique portrayal of what is essentially a God of death
Agreed! Yveltal's voice can be interpreted as demonic so it also shows how people portray death as something to be feared yet your comment is right! Yvetal and Xerneas are doing their duty in keeping nature's delicate cycle
well, they are meant to represent the cycle of nature: without death, you cant die, live eternally in the endless boredom. because no one can die, nothing is exiting anymore. but without life, what will replace those that died? its the Cycle, not the endless war between two deities like BW's theme: The Ideals and The Truth.

I never really saw Yveltal's design as scary, but you make a good point about the general theming around them
It certainly is different from certain other duo where one want the other dead so bad that they are ready to destoy everything to do it, like Kyogre and Groudon or Reshiram and Zekrom.
The thing I love about this is that they’re aren’t arguing like Groudon and Kyogre, they have the same end goal, Yveltal is just more destructive and Xerneas is more comforting
Xerneas has the job of creating nature
Yveltal has the job of trimming nature down so life isn’t just suffering.
Zygard has the job of making sure the other two don’t go overboard with their own jobs
I would have liked them confronting each other at least once. It’s proven not every legendary Pokémon get along with each other, mostly the region’s mascot duo (excluding Alola and Galar since both Pokémon are essentially from the same base creature)

@@asterthehedgehog6861 i don't really like this thing with legendaries fighting with each other like Zekrom and Reshiram, Groundon and Kyogre. These few are enough. Yveltal and Xerneas are just continuing the cycle of life and death. They and other legendaries don't really have any reason to fight each other. Groundon was made to make land, Kyogre was made to make water, to prevent destruction of the world they sleep or are silenced by Rayquaza. One tries to do it's thing but its job is interrupted by the other. Reshiram and Zekrom exist to fight with each other ...which is weird but ok.
If Pokémon really want to make rivalry between legendaries then they really need to make them have a good reason for it.
@@Kyumifun Reshiram and Zekrom and Kyurem were the original dragon and then due to the twin heros fighting over truth and ideals Zekrom and Reshiram were split from kyurem each representing truth or ideals
So there is a very good reason on why they fight
I love how Xerneas and Yveltal are in sync.
Whilst they both focus on their respective domains in their lyrics you can hear Xerneas’s aggressive positivity quite clearly and Yveltal says their solo lines with not joy but energy.
Similarly to the Groundon vs Kyogre song Xerneas is slower and more drawn out in line delivery whilst Yveltals is fast and leaves little time to absorb the words (like life and death) but when its both of their time to sing, unlike Groundon vs Kyogre, the lyrics are the same, showing how they are on the same page about the “eternal cycle” and are simply fulfilling their duties.
I like how you can also see a bit of the legendaries thoughts, like with Yveltal seemingly saying “Life is always bright and happy, death is always dark and hated” bitterly and Xerneas saying “Can’t you see that life and death are part of nature’s beauties? We are just upholding order, just out duties” like its been trying to reason this to someone that is, or that Xerneas feels, is less understanding .
They're both speaking to someone 3rd, or to everyone. They both sound like they're explaining things
I love how these two are just spitting facts, not trying to murder anyone or save the world, just telling you to enjoy life cause it can end at any time.
It fits with how their final encoutners go in the game as well. They straight up KNOW their power is being abused by Lysandre, and they trust the player to keep that power out of his hands because they literally worked to create this balance and don't want to upset it.

I like how their lyrics are essentially a gaint rebuttal to Lysander's argument and goals, slamming the door close before he could really get anywhere.
which he deserves for trying to use their power to use the ultimate weapon and mess with balance
Yet in many ways Lysanders view of the world of how he got to that outcome was not wrong, his solution was.

@@mlpfanboy1701 Galar really comes off as a region that doesn't belong in the pokemon world. However the notion of resource scarcity is utter nonsense for the pokemon world. With complete energy to matter conversion and the abilities of pokemon to fall back on it is physically impossible to run out of energy or resources.
I love how much this contrasts with Groudon Vs. Kyogre. In this it seems that Xerneas and Yveltal understand that they are two sides of the same coin, neither coming off as evil, Xerneas being the serene beauty and life of the earth, and Yveltal being the cooling embrace of death . Unlike Groudon vs. Kyogre, where the two vie for dominance over the earth. Groudons voice being sharp, loud, and booming like earthquakes and Kyogre being silent, ominous and cold, like the depths of the ocean, both evil in their own way.
Now that you mention it, contrary to being the Evil-Type (Dark-Type), I don't think Yveltal is at all evil; he's just bringing death as he's supposed to. Can't have life without death.

I like how the last line of the song could be interpreted as “go touch grass”

The Duality of the two voices' tones show that they are both portrayed differently, With Yveltal portrayed as Death and Xerneas portrayed as Life. The lyrics show that both sides are needed in the grand scale of Nature. The lyrics' Juxtapositions truly show that both pokemon are opposites of the same coin. Yveltal having this screamy voice shows power yet Danger that can be heard from around, with Xerneas' Quieter but more melodic voice shows power but in a Harmonious way
The fact they speak mostly about order is also a direct opposite to Groudon and Kyogre, Where they yelled at each other about covering the earth in land/sea, this Song shows that Life and Death are both two parts of The order of Nature that they must uphold.
Also can I just point out how underrated Gake is?? Like- the guy has an amazing voice that not many people got to appreciate until now

Honestly a good analysis. The kind I tend to write after one of MOTIs songs. The land and sea are indeed opposits vying for control. Whereas life and death, while they follow the same token, they do not vy for control. They are cyclical and connected. The opposition is cast in the vocals, the harmony in the lyrics (both metaphorically and literally)

I think what makes this better is the balancer, Zygarde, canonically doesn't need to stay in Kalos. It can travel the world to preserve order because Xerneas and Yveltal remain balanced
I love the symbolism of these 2 and how they're portrayed in the lyrics
Xerneas' lyrics cling and drag, she holds long notes almost everytime she sings alone, it could be symbolic of how Life can be slow, rythmic, even predictable at times. Yet Xerneas' doesn't isolate death and focus solely on the living aspects of life, and doesn't shy away from the parts that involve death and loss of life.
Yveltal could have easily been a Ridley analog, relishing in the death and destruction. But no, it's not a hobby, or pass time, or a game, it's a duty given by God himself. It even acknowledges how thankless it is, but like the other parts of death, he doesn't waste time with it, or hang on those words. In contrast to Xerneas' lines, Yveltal dishes out it's verse quickly and smoothly as it can, not dragging notes or slowing tempo. It doesn't matter how quickly or how slowly you part the land of the living, all that matters is that you were there in the first place.
Life can flash by in an instant, or cling to every breath of air you take. These 2 know that better than anyone, so what would be the point in bickering over what is more important, or trying to throw hands to settle which aspects should be focused on. Life leads to Death, there's no need to fight over the inevitability of fate.
And they know that.

Yveltal's barely-intelligible robotic rapping about punishing humanity for their greed has to be one of the most awesome things created by humanity.
I love the closeness Xerneas and Yveltal share despite their opposition. They tell they are here for a balance to be sustained, despite their seemingly opposed nature : Xerneas seem to be like an almost parent figure while Yveltal seem more distant, but both sing together for this is simply what they were made for. Beautiful.
Yveltal's personality, or what we see of it in canon, definitely seems to be more detached. I guess it makes sense, I would probably be the same if I was a manifestation of destruction and people feared and cursed my name.

What's so interesting about how these two are portrayed is how Yveltal's lyrics show his nature to be almost... calm, in a way, but impossible to sway. He isn't exactly aggressive, but persistent. Almost like he's trying to convince you that he isn't evil, but that his part to play is essential. At the same time, Xerneas seems to be compassionate and uplifting, but also wise and counseling. She more or less defends Yveltal by saying that his work will not make hers meaningless, but instead enriches it, and because of that, she will do her duty and also allow him to do his- we all know she could stop him if you've ever seen them fight in-game. In a way, they both seem to care about each other in one of the most unique ways of any legendary duo I've seen portrayed before.
Interesting to make Xerneas and Yveltal far more harmonious than Groudon and Kyorge. Making Yveltal an agent of order, if a widely disliked one, that makes life all the more precious to those who have it.
After seeing those two shine in the movie "Diancie and the cocoon of destruction", became part of my favourite legendaries.
How beautiful and benevolent Xerneas can be and how imponent and scary can be Yveltal against his opponents.
I am simply amazed yveltal is singing instead of destroying the guy who woke him up considering the movie said he would destroy all life in kalos if someone woke him up
Love the stark contrast between Groudon vs Kyogre and Xerneas/Yveltal
In Groudon vs Kyogre, both legendaries are portrayed as objectively evil. Both are conquerors bent on world domination and thus objectively evil and directly opposed to one another.
Meanwhile Xerneas/Yveltal portrays both Xerneas and Yveltal as keepers of nature and thus objectively good albeit with very different aspects of the job. While Xerneas creates the life that comprises nature, Yveltal trims it down so it doesn’t become a garden of weeds that is comprised of suffering.
Like the garden talked about in Arceus’ theme?
Groudon and Kyogre also exist as part of the Natural Balance and are direct opposites to Xerneas and Yveltal.
Compared to the Aura Trio, Groudon and Kyogre don't share slight respect to eachother, they know their duties, Groudon knows it exists to build the continents, Kyogre knows it exists to build the oceans. But compared to Xerneas and Yveltal who respect the other and acknowledge their roles in the natural balance, Groudon and Kyogre simply defy their roles to simple construction. Which is why Rayquaza exists, although Groudon and Kyogre's existence is needed to keep the balance of endless rain and endless drought, Removing the other dooms life in both ways.
Xerneas and Yveltal respect eachother's existence and as mentioned before, acknowledge that they exist for a role. As they say in the song: Life and Decay, Death and Rebirth. The one amazing thing about it is that they don't fight eachother when they do come paths to eachother, compared to the Weather Trio where if all three meet eachother is an War, The Aura Trio where if all three meet eachother is nothing happens, they pass by as if its an average tuesday.
If one were to rampage in an endless rage just like Yveltal did in the Diancie Movie, Xerneas intervenes to prevent Yveltal from disrupting the Balance. Should Xerneas Fail, then Zygarde will directly intervene between the two. Compared to removing Groudon would most likely not lead to direct retribution by Rayquaza, Removing Xerneas or Yveltal for even 3 seconds would lead to a brutal demise by Zygarde.
Its truly amazing how both the Weather and Aura Trios, despite being so different in nature, are both on the different sides of the same coin.
What an absolute banger of a song that I was so glad to work on. This song I ended up taking in a similar path to Alex's Groudon vs Kyogre where this is less the battle directly from the game like all the other legendaries are and more these two pokemon and their dichotomy with each other. This song took a slightly different path still where it is much less them singing at each other and more their song to the whole PokeEarth.
This whole song started with the zinger of "life and decay, death and rebirth". I had been listening to this song as I would drive around for a little bit trying to find inspiration and where to take it, and that line just kept coming back to me till I had to write the whole thing. It kinda just evolved from there where some parts followed the rough and rugged Yvetal and other parts the bright and flowing Xerneas, but also not locking them to those roles and switching them up from time to time. Part of the fun with this song was because of how little we got of Gen 6 and especially pertaining to the lore and mythos of Kalos. Trying to make sure that you have your origins straight is hard when you just don't have much to go on, but what I ended up doing was blending aspects of Zygarde into the lyrics with the whole "nature's defender" that Gen 7 game em. I figured if Arceus made Zygarde to defend the earth and it's natural order, it would only make sense that the other two aspects of it's trio would do the same just with their leanings to life or death compared to strictly order.
Ultimately I wanted this song to in the end be able to speak to you, the listener, directly. It's no secret that I've struggled in life recently, and I really wanted to have this song that really spoke to "you matter, even if it's small, you do truly matter in your journey on this earth" while also having that little dash of "hey don't kill the planet" because, that's just what life should be encompassed as.
Also as a final bit I included near the end is "upholding Arceus's will" tieing into the same kind of lore that I have meantioned subscribing to before where the Legendaries have a tendency to be "working for Arceus" due to being their creator and holding the Legendaries to a kind of "god" status within the pokemon lore. (See Lockstin and Gnoggin for more of that stuff)
As for the presentation on this song, damn man I don't even know where to begin! Gake and Uprising did absolutely banger jobs with Yvetal and Xerneas capturing the rugged fast passed nature of Yvetal and how death can come at you fast as well as the flowy paced nature of Xerneas and how life lasts a long time and holds every second in high regard. Of course the two of them are made even more perfect by Marc and their absolutely banger mixing and voice effects that just make these Pokemon sound just perfect and like what you would expect from the anime even. (And seriously, every one of these legendary Pokemon sound so perfect and I haven't sung enough praise to Marc in these essay posts, dude does seriously amazing work)
Of course Tomato just tied everything together in a nice neat bow with the banger art. The backgrounds especially just bring that extra layer of character to both of these Pokemon and what the rule over. Not to mention the art of the Pokemon themselves is just so amazing and if you told me it was official art I would absolutely believe you! When it comes to the art with these Pokemon songs, literally every one of our artists has knocked it out of the park and honestly, I struggle to believe that any of them are fanart and not official works 😂.
And oh yeah. The lyrics writer did alright I guess.
But yeah, that's pretty much the end of this essay, with how many of these I'm doing I'm struggling a bit to find unique ways to compliment all of these amazing people on the MotI team. You can just see and hear the passion that everyone has put into them and honestly, I am so grateful for the chance to work with all of them and to have the chance to live my life with these amazing people.

I like how unlike the Hoenn ones, these two cooperate to send the same message instead of battling each other.
If these two were humans, (or gijinka, I guess,) they'd be a husband/wife duo who are committed to their jobs regardless of the opinions of others, while also committed to each other. A true power couple.
As for personalities, Xerneas would be calm, collected and a bit stern, with a kind and comforting side.
Yveltal would be cold and kinda distant, but understanding, with extremely slight anger issues. He's not a "bad guy", he just got landed with the grimmest job ever, and he's really good at it.

People think they're bad guys, but they're not.
Giratina only wants to protect the Distortion World (and by extension the Pokemon world) against psychos like Cyrus, and Darkrai straight up sacrificed itself to save an entire town.
Also, he's a REALLY good actor.
His role in the Mystery Dungeon series is iconic.
(Yes, I personally think that the Mystery Dungeon series is a TV show within the Pokemon universe.)
I like how this song contrasts with the other Legendary duet between Groudon and Kyogre. With them, it's clear that they are at war with each other. Here, yes they are complete opposites, but they are united and work in tandem with one another. I just think it's neat!
Pokemon x and Y have the most impactful legendary theme that just starts with a massive wave of intensity and amazement, You captured this PERFECTLY!!! NGL...i teared up a little.

Rewatching this after the recent (at the time of typing this) announcement of Pokemon: Legends Z-A makes me hopeful and excited about the idea of a Vs. Zygarde with lyrics.
Yveltal's perspective on Life and Death is that it's something inevitable and a cold, hard fact you can never escape from or change, and Xerneas's perspective is that Death is simply another part of Life and shouldn't be something to be afraid of or prevent you from enjoying the life you still have.
Xerneas's lines sound like something straight out of Nightwish and Yveltal's lines sound like he's spitting bars.

The two aren't even fighting, they just try to prove a point to the humans. Both death and life are important
They may have different duties over different forces, but they share one goal; to keep the circle of life in balance, and I feel this cover did that idea justice.
Now I can’t get circle of life scene from Lion king but raffiki is holding a deer with wings out of my head.
I really like the general portrayal of these two. With Yveltal, it understands that death is villified, but it still has to do its job to maintain order, even if people think it evil for doing so. And Xerneas understands the same thing, accepting that it needs Yveltal to exist.
I love the effect on the vocals for Yveltal. It really fits this song.
This isn’t like Groundon/Krogre where they don’t like being two necessarily parts of life, death and the land… these two are partners in their ruling of life, death and fate. They have nothing but respect for each other
I can see these two as some sort of couple. Xerneas is the more annoyingly optimistic one and Yveltal is the more realistic one that acknowledges the badness in the world

Funny because Yveltal is actually better than Xerneas, in Singles at least. Too many Steel types in Ubers so Xerneas struggles.
This... was honestly so beautiful. And this puts such a much more positive spin on Yveltal's role. From having goosebumps on my first listen to realizing how much this fits the both of them, this might actually be my favorite Pokemon Musical Byte you all have created.
I like this take on the theme, like how Groudon and Kyogre were arguing about who is stronger, while Xerneas and Yveltal agree that both Life and Death are needed to keep nature in control.
Also the filter on yveltal is slightly hard to understand, a bit too extreme imo.

I always had this thought of Xerneas and Yveltal
Yveltal is a punisher whose main purpose is to *destroy* those who break the balance and cause chaos (of course those are mainly the humans).
He destroy, but for a reason.
Xerneas is on the other hand a healer.
Her job is fix part of Yveltal results, even if humans got their punishment it's not right for the rest of pokemons to suffer, so Xerneas arrive and helps
And of course there's Zygarde, who is the Balance Pokemon.
Even though in the anime we see Zygarde as a punisher too, I think that's only a part of their job.
They have to keep balance and their purpose is to guard and protect Yveltal and Xerneas
Zygarde is the guardian of creation and destruction
All follow the order of the earth. I can name quite a few pokemon who'd disagree
A true representation of the harmony of the world. Everything has a beginning and all stories must end. Xerneas the life bringer, the mother of the earth, Yveltal, the life taker, the father of destruction, you cannot, and SHALL NOT have one without the other. And if one falls, all of nature will come crumbling down. But, when both are in harmony, you shall see the true beauty of Planet Earth. All things begin, and all so end. That is nature at its finest and most purest.

The effect on Yveltal's voice sounds like his cry, I think that's pretty cool albeit a bit hard to understand. Thank you for not portraying them as enemies!

Whereas Groudon and Kyogre are chaos, Xerneas and Yveltal are harmony. The former pair can't stand the idea of coexistence with each other and would be at constant odds without Rayquaza's intervention. Meanwhile, the latter pair seems to understand and even accept each other's role in the cycle that they were created to oversee, and thus are able to work in tandem even without Zygarde's lazy tail.

They are a true nature of things
Zygarde: The balance of both worlds

Whereas Zekrom and Reshiram are known as the Yin-Yang Emperors, though they're officially Truths and Ideals.
In reality, all of the legendary duos reference Yin and Yang, apart from these few:
-Mewtwo has no counterpart, unless you count Mew, but that's a mythical, unlike Mewtwo, which is a legendary.
-Zacian and Zamazenta are two heroes, but honestly, include Eternatus and it's like Yin and Yang.
Another thing, Lugia and Ho-oh aren't really opposites or anything, but there IS a way to see is as Yin and Yang. Rainbows are always seen in the sky, which is Ho-oh's thing, plus, it's found at the top of a tower in the SKY.
Lugia is hard, but it's found in a deep cave. Another thing, Ho-oh was seen as golden in the Anime at first, while Lugia got a shadow form in some side games.

I remember playing Pokemon Y as a little kid. I had a lot of fun with it and this song hit something in my heart. I love it!
Unlike the Groudon and Kyogre battle,which was two opposites in conflict, Xerneas and Yveltal both agree that they are two parts of a functioning system of harmony.
I think the titular hedgehog put it best at the end of Sonic and the Black Knight when he says that "Every world has its end. I know that's kinda sad, but... That's why we have to live life to the fullest in the time we have! At least, that's what I figure!" I'm sure Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde would approve.
the hook of this is downright infectious, i cant stop restarting the first 30 secconds just to get that "LIFE AND DECAY! DEATH AND REBIRTH!" again. same for kyurem with his "truuUUTH AND ideEEAAAals!", these are an amazing package so far

i love this song so much. i love portraying yveltal as "having a duty" instead of "oh im evil cuz im death and destruction" while he seems evil and dark in the song but he is shown to being part of an order and cycle. which as far as i know is what the trio of xerneas yveltal and zygarde are based on. order so i think this is great song for showing that
This is beautiful duality. I love this song as both Uprising Attorney and Gake did wonderful. I think has to be one of the best so far out of the Pokemon Legendary Bytes. Can't wait to see what is for next week.
Yveltal can be very vengeful to anyone who disturbs its sleep and will seek to destroy it, while Xerneas has the power to share eternal life and has the power to revive those who have been petrified by Yveltal but cannot always undo it

Hey, I really feel you on this one and I'm glad this song is able to help you some. Last year I had to put down my beloved cat of around a decade and well, it's hard to have to say goodbye to our furry family members. But the thing I can say and that is part of what I put into these lyrics, even if they have passed on, we did what we could to give them the best life possible. Yes their lives are so much shorter than our own, but even if it stings, despite them being gone from our life, we will never be gone from theirs, because we were there for their whole life.
Death hurts and it stings, but without Death we would never be able to appreciate Life's beauty.
I do hope that you will be alright though. It's hard I know, but that's what makes it beautiful. 💙

Ying and Yang, Light and Darkness, the perfect Leggendary Duo
Two of my favorite legendaries! Love the designs, love the concepts! Unfortunately it seems these days most fans just kinda gloss over gen 6.
What makes this lyric good good and symbolic is the nature of these two. Xerneas and Yveltal aren't true enemies. They are merely keeping the balance of nature. They see the beauty of life and death every 3,000 years. They ensure those while cherish life with the time they have life before the inevitable death. Like with Zacian and Zamazenta, they complete the other in a delicate balance in the Pokemon circle of Life. Another good song done by amazing people.
I'm betting next week is Necrozma's time to shine.
