How to Use a Script while Looking at the Camera

  • The best way to record a video using a word-for-word script is with a teleprompter. However, most people don't have a teleprompter. In this video, I show how to use your computer's built-in camera (or attached webcam) to record so that your eyes stay focused on the camera. For this tutorial, I'm using a Mac with its FaceTime camera and Screenflow to edit the resulting footage.

    Thank you for the review, I also experienced that presenting using slides (converted with PPT Mirror app) with bullet points structure in a teleprompter is more way better and a definitive guide to giving eye contact than using word-for-word script.

    Thank you for the info, I experienced that presenting using slides with bullet points structure in a teleprompter is a definitive guide to giving eye contact with the viewers, and I don't have to read word-for-word as I always have my whole concept in front of a camera. but you would have to mirror-flip the slides with the PPT Mirror app ( the app works with Bluetooth remote with any device in every browser).

    There is nothing that replaces a teleprompter!

      I agree that a teleprompter is best, but I made this tutorial for those people who don't have one. I explained this in the tutorial. The script technique is not ideal but works in a pinch. The best option is a teleprompter or a teleprompter app like the one I describe in this video: th-cam.com/video/jQgXu-9E4ok/w-d-xo.html

      Hi Diane
      And also helpful, to use Powerpoint slides on your device in prompter, which helps not to memorize the script by simply using your existing slides, with ppt-mirror.com app ppt slides are converted and mirrored for iPad, Tablet or smartphone to be used in any cheap prompter with the slides flipped, and the app doesn't force you to read word for word.

      Sorry you are having a problem watching this tutorial. The video plays perfectly on my computer as well as on mobile devices. So, perhaps the problem is your internet connection or something else at your end.

    Um... there are utilities that allow you to scroll pages of text. You can even use AutoScroll, which is part of Word, to scroll down your page at various speeds.

    • @sciencevideography

      Or you can use teleprompter apps as demonstrated here: th-cam.com/video/jQgXu-9E4ok/w-d-xo.html

    How about when youre operating a slide presentation and your screen is being shared on zoom?

    • @sciencevideography
      @sciencevideography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This method works for a ppt presentation with notes and "presenter view": In Zoom, select "share" to share your screen, then select "advanced", then select "portion of screen". A box will appear on your screen. Open your presentation and start presenter view. Reposition and resize the Zoom box to cover only the slide showing in presenter view. Now you can see your notes and go through your presentation while your Zoom audience only sees the slides.

    Interesting approach. Seems a bit fiddly though. Do you think there's a tradeoff between editing time and the cost of a teleprompter, e.g. for someone who might be recording about 20 videos over a couple of months?

    • @sciencevideography
      @sciencevideography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are right. It is a bit fiddly. But OK for the person doing the occasional video, which is who I had in mind with this tutorial. If you are producing a lot of videos, though, it's probably worth it to get a teleprompter.

      Hi, Matt
      what do you think about using powerpoint in a teleprompter? with ppt-mirror.com app slides can be converted for iPad/Tablet to be used in a prompter with the slides displayed mirrored-flipped..it also helps me to record unlimited long videos without memorizing the script by simply using my existing slides and also not force me to read word for word which leads my speech to more natural... best wishes

    But when we cut the portion from video, the audio of that portion will also go. How will we maintain the continuity ..So, I don't get that part when u said if u looking away from camera, cut away those parts !!??

    • @sciencevideography
      @sciencevideography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use this method, stop talking when you look away from the camera. A better approach is to use a teleprompter app as I demonstrate in this video: th-cam.com/video/jQgXu-9E4ok/w-d-xo.html

    Powerpoint slides with talking points in a prompter, nothing will conquer the combination when it comes to look natural and speak confidently in front of camera.
