Thank you, Amanda. I use an outline. And, I do not read it. I am an actor, so I comfortable on camera. When i screw up, I simply pause, hold my position, then continue where I left off in the same position so that I can make a relatively smooth jump cut. I recommend knowing all of your key talking points and learning to deliver each one different ways. That helps you to be relaxed on camera and to not worry about forgetting specific lines or words. It's the same approach i take to on camera acting auditions.
Tip #2 has been absolutely HUGE for me. I’m terrible at reading off a teleprompter, winging it, and going off bullet points. Even after making videos for 7+ years, delivering in chunks is still the only way I’ve ever been able to make it work (and it actually works pretty well).
@Retipster @AmandaHorvath This is where I got stuck with some understanding. So you read 2 sentences of the script over and over again or like 3 times each line through your run-through? Like I don't know what it is about my fog mind but I am having difficulty understanding this concept. Could I get some quick clarification or elaboration on this?
@merlin6223 you’ll find your own flow with it. The general rule is that you don’t really want only 1 take cause when filming yourself, it’s easy for something to happen and mess up that take (like your audio glitches or something). Having 2 takes minimum helps reduce errors. It really ultimately depends on YOUR preferences though. Bottom line - experiment and find what works for you! These are merely guidelines for what has helped me avoid needing to reshoot or kick myself in editing for making a mistake that now I’m stuck with. Hope this helps!

I bought the Neewer teleprompter. Wrote a script for my product review video. There is so much information I can't imagine doing this type of video without a teleprompter. Since it will be my first product review video, I imagine I will get better at them and be able to flow with just an outline after some time and practice. Thanks for your great videos. They are helpful and insightful.
The majority of our videos use voiceovers which are scripted and read off a monitor. Our on-camera footage is unscripted. You do a good job using the TelePrompter. Animated and engaging. The concentrated stare of reading gets to some people though. It depends on how sensitive your audience is to it and how long the shots are. I've suggested to on-air talent that they look away as if looking at back up notes occasionally whether they have them or not for extended shots. There are other ways, but just something to break the lock on the TelePrompter. It takes a bit of practice but can make a big difference.
I agree with this tip. A chance to look away is when you mention the remote control. Look at the remote (ad lib if you can) and then look back at the camera. Also remember to blink. 🙂

Great video! Lots of good advices! Thank you! A tip for Parrot Teleprompter users. If you don't have the remote control (I couldn't buy it at B&H Photo because they weren't allowed to ship gear with batteries abroad. I live in Sweden and couldn't buy it here, at least not in 2018 when I bought my Parrot Teleprompter), use a slim bluetooth keyboard instead and start/stop scrolling by hitting the space button. Scroll up and down by usig the arrow buttons.
This was really helpful, and you've pulled back the curtain on those 'B-roll' bits of footage and the zoom in / zoom out thing that I've seen in so many other TH-cam videos - now it makes so much more sense! It's actually serving an editing purpose and isn't just about having more stuff going on in the video! That was a revelation - thanks for this huge tip 😀

Some great tips, I dislike jump cuts ( or worse when people try to hide them with a with a 3 frame blur between clips ) so have been trying to record in a single take, but then i trip over a word after 5 minutes and it's back to the start! Love the simplicity of switching the framing - hides the joins really well without needing to change the camera angle at all. Have been thinking about a teleprompter too and this has encouraged me to try one.
Outlining, zooms for jump cuts, batches of sentences, all very particularly useful tips. Yes I can tell you are using a teleprompter, it's the spacing between your words and it felt more clear, in a rhythm and concise but its best when it comes to how to and information videos. Great video, thanks
No you can't tell she's using a teleprompter. You can tell her speech is even and consistent and you surmise its due to pre written copy since most humans don't have speech that consistent and fluid.
Thank you for your sound advice - much appreciated :-) As for your question about noticing the use of a teleprompter, the answer is YES - I can tell you're reading since you continuously fix your eyes on the camera to read the script. Natural speech is more than just intonation; it involves "random" eye movement as we think, remember or express emotions.

Oh my god, many thanks for this! The online teaching has been such a pain for everybody that I decided to script my classes and shoot them. Students love it but it takes me so much time!! Your tips helped me a lot and encouraged me to carry on. I will definitely watch your other videos to get more efficiency in my work flow. I am new to this but I think I am getting better everytime. Great info here! Teleprompters are great to keep you on subject and deliver precisely what you want to deliver but you are so right about having to make sure your script is on point and ready to read prior to recording. Love the content! Subbed!
I'm just getting started. As a security blanket or perhaps training wheels, I'm using a teleprompter that I found on Amazon for $50 with either the Nano Teleprompter app (which was updated a few days ago and allows live syncing with my google drive) or SmartPrompt Pro (which uses voice recognition so the prompter follows my voice instead of the other way around). The voice recognition in SP can become glitchy but when it works well it allows me to make natural thoughtful pauses or even go off-script and pick up where I left off. Thought your followers might like to hear about these products.
I personally never scripted a video , but i always had the headlines written. But what a nice cheaper solution! for those who want such a tool ! Technology is making it easier than ever to create your own video world . Lastly, you are a very good storyteller ! Keep it up !
Thank you for recommending the low end teleprompter - I might try that as my first foray into TH-cam was certainly harder than expected due to "flow" of ideas winging it in front of the camera, just doesn't work. I also like the outline idea versus the whole read effect to allow for spontaneous fills.
I've always found trying to remember a script word for word makes me come across a bit robotic on camera but maybe that's just me 😂 Thanks for the video, will be using the outline tip more and the chunking tip was gold!
or just use ppt mirror tool to convert and invert the script you typed from powerpoint on your iPad or smartphone and use the device in a teleprompter if you want to avoid script memorizing and to read word for word, and the ppt mirror tool use bluetooth pageflip pedal to switch your slides during video recording.
Hey Amanda, I wanted to thank for helping me. I just started making videos for my real estate business and I was struggling in front of the camera and was wasting lots of time reshooting. I purchased the Parrot teleprompter and now I finally have content. You really helped me and I'm grateful. Just thought I would let you know:)
I love outlining! It's working great for youtube - but for an online education I think it's harder to wing things. 10 min video content vs 60+ is a different game.
I create Bible lesson/educational vids and use the outline + wing it. I do see the value of scripting it instead, but I also see the value of outlines. I like the natural feel outlining gives me, and it more closely models preaching and teaching, which I've done for over 15 years. I do use jump cuts, zooming slightly, B roll (stock pics and vids), and other things to obscure clip changes. Not to say I'm entertaining or perfect, but I try.

I'm definitely an outline presenter. I do both recorded content and live presentations/seminars. Outlining allows me to create a consistent message and improvise based on interactions and knowledge of my audience. I really enjoy your content, Amanda. Another great video! I'm curious about your vocal fry at the end of each sentence. I have been taught to "lower my tone" at the end of a sentence to sound more knowledgeable and in control. You always come across clear an concise (must be the great scripting!). Is that an intentional vocal trait?

I want to share some memories and shots taken during my trips, music without voice or narration is not very engaging though.

This is the first time I see your channel, awesome content and you’re so good-looking too!! (No hetero 🙏) As a musical artist I don’t usually have to shoot scripted videos and for livestreams with fans I usually use outlines, mostly because they involve interaction anyway. But then just as you said, for the broadcast version I always find myself having to edit out a lot of filler, dead air and repetitive parts even if I stayed on topic, apparently that’s just something we do? So thanks for the tip, now I’ll know to use a script when I have to shoot something prerecorded - seems like it’ll save me a lot of time.

I'm still kind of figuring it out. I feel like reading everything is great if your content is informative, but when it's for entertainment it makes you look robotic.
Actually, even when it's for entertainment, u can make it sound entertaining. You need to speak with emotions while reading, using pauses, exclamations, and changing tone of voice as per situation... Then, it won't sound robotic.... I try to do that in some of my videos where I just read out.... And then it sounds fine...
Not when its done right. What you're referring to is the limit of the presenter. Watch a newscast. You can immediately tell when they switch to improvisation (during transitions, e.g. news to weather/sports/etc.) The whole meter and tone changes.
I loved hearing about when you sscript and when you don't script. I do the same. Bullet points and outline for TH-cam videos and scripting for online courses. Thanks for the teleprompter info too :)

I don’t know why there is still this myth of cinematic 24 FPS. I do not recommend shooting in 24 frames a second. Reason is: the majority of people is watching TH-cam on their phones or tablets. Their native frame rate is 60 FPS, making 30 or 60 frames a second the only “correct” frame rate matching the screens frame rate. For every other frame rate, TH-cam has to either drop a frame here and there, or double a frame. Depending on the content, it might look choppy. 24 frames a second is a cinematic frame rate which makes only sense on devices supporting it natively, which is not phones nor tablets and also not the majority of computers. Please stop shooting in 24 frames unless you specifically want to target cinema or projectors.
24fps is a rate at witch our brain cannot detect changes in frames making videos appear smooth, Unless you are recording a fast action scene such as a car chase, 60fps is a waste of processing time, even then, your brain will fill in the details. Technology can change but biology stays the same.
Bruce Yako 24 FPS is the framerate we BEGIN to see a series of pictures as a fluid motion. But you can DEFINITELY see the difference between 24, 30, 60 and even 120 FPS. Any gamer will tell you as well as any iPad Pro, OnePlus 8 Pro, etc. owner. Besides that, there is still the issue of doubled/skipped frames when watching 24fps content on a 60hz screen.
@@konrad7592 you're confusing what the eyes can see with what the brain can translate. Do some more reasearch on how the eyes and the brain work, Stop listening to gamers lol.
Bruce Yako I did my research. And besides that, I can safely tell you the difference between 30 and 60 FPS with my left eye while just woken up. Everybody can see the difference. That’s a fact. And there is STILL THE ISSUE that TH-cam or the device you’re watching on has to ditch or insert a frame when displaying 24fps on a 60hz screen. 24 just cannot be evenly divided by 60. And that might cause the footage to look odd. You cannot argue with that.

I teach Bible videos & frequently change formats during the video. My older TH-cam channel several years ago (not in my personal name) was less focused & longer in length. I created a new channel in January of 2021 in my personal name, Wayne V. Amelung. I use some of your techniques. I use a second Laptop as a teleprompter. Hey Amanda, I love this topic. I do a bit of a script/outline combo but think best on the spot so I often paraphrase a lot and find it easiest to figure out exactly how to say it in the moment as I'm filming. But an outline is definitely a MUST! Cheers.
That’s definitely what I’ve settled on too! It can sometimes make it more challenging in the moment, like “oh shoot - where did I leave off??” But I like how much time it saves!
Amanda, your pupil draws the camera lens attention with magnetic force, imagine if you were using slides instead of script, you would be hired with youtubers and present you as their camera, some would fail to make eye contact with you because you're excessively a natural nature in front of camera.
This makes so much sense, I had been doing some of this, but you did a great job explaining why. Being consistent is the key. Keep up the good work- thanks for posting.

Hello Amanda, what a relief. I have been making educational videos since 2015, I need 2 days for one minute of video, including scripting. But the most difficult thing I found were the intros and outros, n which I am to be seen myself. I'm German but record in English - many repetitions, slip-ups, glitches - annoying. I can agree with everything you said, from the stupid idea of talking directly into the camera at the beginning to the idea that teaching material should be based on scripts. This has the advantage of being able to publish the text as a book. Now I'm looking for a teleprompter and I stumbled over you. Thank you Amanda, it was very helpful and I got a super concrete answer to my question. I thought actually that you might be using telepromter because of the paced speed of you speech which, I guess, can happen when you have the text rolling at a set speed. We used a telepromter for filming a videocourse and thanks to it managed to record 45 pages of text in just on day. Happy I found your channel, looking forward to explore your content!
Welcome to the club! Yeah the teleprompter can be great for getting a lot done (so long as the script works and doesn't need tweaking in the moment). I don't have a set speed when using the teleprompter though. I'm consistently using the remote to speed up and down at certain speeds. Some sentences just come out easier than others. Beaaauuutifullly explained! Hahahaha, I knew nothing about all this and I've been having nightmares on how to make a little video to promote my business. I would love to be able to just outline it and go from there but at least now I know that I have options. I'm terrible on camera when I'm trying to be specific, but now I see probably many people struggle with the same. You took a ton of weight off my shoulders!
Great advice and I love your shelf - we're modular shelf buddies.I will channel my inner Horvath on the next outline and maybe do some crop in and crop outs between all my random thoughts and when my voice randomly cracks or my throat dries out or my cat decides to meow in the middle of the shoot.

i like the "deliver in chunks" tips a lot, there is a piano teacher that called this method the "deep section method" you basically repeat the same section 7 times in a row without a single mistake, if you do make a mistake then you restart which force you to do it properly and make it sink properly before you you move on to the next section i'm preparing a project and i was pretty afraid of scripting because i felt that it might not feel naturally but this video really helped :D
Prompter can be a useful tool but can also become crutch. I’d say use prompter for bullets and specific facts that you want to include without getting them wrong. But having bullets allows for the space for you to shine. Anyone can learn to read scrolling paragraphs but there’s only ONE you so let your personality shine!! Great video Amanda!
I turn the camera on and just speak. It works for me. With my videos scripting would not be authentic. I'm a spiritual based channel. I'm not new to sharing in front of people so it's not something I'm new to. I do write out what I want to say though, but I don't look at it during my filming. It just helps me to have a good idea of what I'm going to be talking about. I could tell you were using the teleprompter, only because I know what the difference is, but I think you do a great job at speaking on camera. Well done

I’ve been using a teleprompter for the Dr. K Show since the beginning because it keeps my videos concise and speeds up my editing time. But I have been thinking about going with an outline because the scripting process takes me forever too. Got me thinking. Thanks Amanda!

I generally dislike watching tutorial videos, as I can get through technical content quicker by reading, and can backup and reread much easier. Having said that, your video was well presented and the production quality spoke to the success of the teleprompter technique.

Some great tips, I dislike jump cuts ( or worse when people try to hide them with a with a 3 frame blur between clips ) so have been trying to record in a single take, but then i trip over a word after 5 minutes and it's back to the start! Love the simplicity of switching the framing - hides the joins really well without needing to change the camera angle at all. Have been thinking about a teleprompter too and this has encouraged me to try one.

Yes I can tell you are using a teleprompter, it's the spacing between your words and it felt more clear, in a rhythm and concise but its best when it comes to how to and information videos. Great video, thanks

As for your question about noticing the use of a teleprompter, the answer is YES - I can tell you're reading since you continuously fix your eyes on the camera to read the script. Natural speech is more than just intonation; it involves "random" eye movement as we think, remember or express emotions.

Oh my god, many thanks for this! The online teaching has been such a pain for everybody that I decided to script my classes and shoot them. Students love it but it takes me so much time!! I'm just getting started. As a security blanket or perhaps training wheels, I'm using a teleprompter that I found on Amazon for $50 with either the Nano Teleprompter app (which was updated a few days ago and allows live syncing with my google drive) or SmartPrompt Pro (which uses voice recognition so the prompter follows my voice instead of the other way around). The voice recognition in SP can become glitchy but when it works well it allows me to make natural thoughtful pauses or even go off-script and pick up where I left off. Thought your followers might like to hear about these products.
I personally never scripted a video , but i always had the headlines written.
But what a nice cheaper solution! for those who want such a tool !

Thank you for recommending the low end teleprompter - I might try that as my first foray into TH-cam was certainly harder than expected due to "flow" of ideas winging it in front of the camera, just doesn't work. I also like the outline idea versus the whole read effect to allow for spontaneous fills.
I've always found trying to remember a script word for word makes me come across a bit robotic on camera but maybe that's just me 😂 Thanks for the video, will be using the outline tip more and the chunking tip was gold!
or just use ppt mirror tool to convert and invert the script you typed from powerpoint on your iPad or smartphone and use the device in a teleprompter if you want to avoid script memorizing and to read word for word, and the ppt mirror tool use bluetooth pageflip pedal to switch your slides during video recording.
Hey Amanda, I wanted to thank for helping me. I just started making videos for my real estate business and I was struggling in front of the camera and was wasting lots of time reshooting. I love outlining! It's working great for youtube - but for an online education I think it's harder to wing things. 10 min video content vs 60+ is a different game.

I create Bible lesson/educational vids and use the outline + wing it. I do see the value of scripting it instead, but I also see the value of outlines. I like the natural feel outlining gives me, and it more closely models preaching and teaching, which I've done for over 15 years. I do use jump cuts, zooming slightly, B roll (stock pics and vids), and other things to obscure clip changes. Not to say I'm entertaining or perfect, but I try.

I'm definitely an outline presenter. I do both recorded content and live presentations/seminars. Outlining allows me to create a consistent message and improvise based on interactions and knowledge of my audience.
I really enjoy your content, Amanda. Another great video! I'm curious about your vocal fry at the end of each sentence. I have been taught to "lower my tone" at the end of a sentence to sound more knowledgeable and in control. You always come across clear an concise (must be the great scripting!). As a musical artist I don’t usually have to shoot scripted videos and for livestreams with fans I usually use outlines, mostly because they involve interaction anyway. But then just as you said, for the broadcast version I always find myself having to edit out a lot of filler, dead air and repetitive parts even if I stayed on topic, apparently that’s just something we do? So thanks for the tip, now I’ll know to use a script when I have to shoot something prerecorded - seems like it’ll save me a lot of time.

I'm still kind of figuring it out. I feel like reading everything is great if your content is informative, but when it's for entertainment it makes you look robotic.
Actually, even when it's for entertainment, u can make it sound entertaining. You need to speak with emotions while reading, using pauses, exclamations, and changing tone of voice as per situation... Then, it won't sound robotic.... I try to do that in some of my videos where I just read out.... And then it sounds fine...
Not when its done right. What you're referring to is the limit of the presenter. Watch a newscast. You can immediately tell when they switch to improvisation (during transitions, e.g. news to weather/sports/etc.) The whole meter and tone changes.
I loved hearing about when you sscript and when you don't script. I do the same. Bullet points and outline for TH-cam videos and scripting for online courses. Thanks for the teleprompter info too :)

I don’t know why there is still this myth of cinematic 24 FPS.
I do not recommend shooting in 24 frames a second. Reason is: the majority of people is watching TH-cam on their phones or tablets.
Their native frame rate is 60 FPS, making 30 or 60 frames a second the only “correct” frame rate matching the screens frame rate.
For every other frame rate, TH-cam has to either drop a frame here and there, or double a frame. Depending on the content, it might look choppy.
24 frames a second is a cinematic frame rate which makes only sense on devices supporting it natively, which is not phones nor tablets and also not the majority of computers.
Please stop shooting in 24 frames unless you specifically want to target cinema or projectors.
24fps is a rate at witch our brain cannot detect changes in frames making videos appear smooth, Unless you are recording a fast action scene such as a car chase, 60fps is a waste of processing time, even then, your brain will fill in the details. Technology can change but biology stays the same.

24 FPS is the framerate we BEGIN to see a series of pictures as a fluid motion. But you can DEFINITELY see the difference between 24, 30, 60 and even 120 FPS.
Any gamer will tell you as well as any iPad Pro, OnePlus 8 Pro, etc. owner.
Besides that, there is still the issue of doubled/skipped frames when watching 24fps content on a 60hz screen.

And besides that, I can safely tell you the difference between 30 and 60 FPS with my left eye while just woken up. Everybody can see the difference. That’s a fact. And there is STILL THE ISSUE that TH-cam or the device you’re watching on has to ditch or insert a frame when displaying 24fps on a 60hz screen. 24 just cannot be evenly divided by 60. And that might cause the footage to look odd. You cannot argue with that.

This also really helps with in person presentations in general. I used to have a script ready, but becoming more familiar with presentations just knowing the material and winging it from there have just become what I do since you'll just ramble on and on

I've only just started making videos for my business (and finding it slightly overwhelming), this has been incredibly helpful, especially the advice on small chunks and cuts! Going to start shooting in 4K now.
P.s. absolutely using the winging it with an outline approach, I've tried using scripts with previous projects and I cannot read naturally.
To be honest, even shooting in 1080p is fine. Most people won't see the difference when you crop in. But if you're shooting on your phone, you may as well do 4K!

Hey Amanda, I love this topic. I do a bit of a script/outline combo but think best on the spot so I often paraphrase a lot and find it easiest to figure out exactly how to say it in the moment as I'm filming. But an outline is definitely a MUST! Cheers.
That’s definitely what I’ve settled on too! It can sometimes make it more challenging in the moment, like “oh shoot - where did I leave off??” But I like how much time it saves!
Amanda, your pupil draws the camera lens attention with magnetic force, imagine if you were using slides instead of script, you would be hired with youtubers and present you as their camera, some would fail to make eye contact with you because you're excessively a natural nature in front of camera.

Hello Amanda, what a relief. I have been making educational videos since 2015, I need 2 days for one minute of video, including scripting. But the most difficult thing I found were the intros and outros, n which I am to be seen myself. I'm German but record in English - many repetitions, slip-ups, glitches - annoying. I can agree with everything you said, from the stupid idea of talking directly into the camera at the beginning to the idea that teaching material should be based on scripts. This has the advantage of being able to publish the text as a book. Now I'm looking for a teleprompter and I stumbled over you. Thank you Amanda, it was very helpful and I got a super concrete answer to my question. I thought actually that you might be using telepromter because of the paced speed of you speech which, I guess, can happen when you have the text rolling at a set speed. We used a telepromter for filming a videocourse and thanks to it managed to record 45 pages of text in just on day. Happy I found your channel, looking forward to explore your content!

Yeah the teleprompter can be great for getting a lot done (so long as the script works and doesn't need tweaking in the moment).
I don't have a set speed when using the teleprompter though. I'm consistently using the remote to speed up and down at certain speeds. Some sentences just come out easier than others.

I would love to be able to just outline it and go from there but at least now I know that I have options. I'm terrible on camera when I'm trying to be specific, but now I see probably many people struggle with the same. You took a ton of weight off my shoulders!

i like the "deliver in chunks" tips a lot, there is a piano teacher that called this method the "deep section method" you basically repeat the same section 7 times in a row without a single mistake, if you do make a mistake then you restart which force you to do it properly and make it sink properly before you you move on to the next section
i'm preparing a project and i was pretty afraid of scripting because i felt that it might not feel naturally but this video really helped :D
Prompter can be a useful tool but can also become crutch. I’d say use prompter for bullets and specific facts that you want to include without getting them wrong. But having bullets allows for the space for you to shine. Anyone can learn to read scrolling paragraphs but there’s only ONE you so let your personality shine!! Great video Amanda!

I turn the camera on and just speak. It works for me. With my videos scripting would not be authentic. I'm a spiritual based channel. I'm not new to sharing in front of people so it's not something I'm new to. I do write out what I want to say though, but I don't look at it during my filming. It just helps me to have a good idea of what I'm going to be talking about. I could tell you were using the teleprompter, only because I know what the difference is, but I think you do a great job at speaking on camera. Well done

I generally dislike watching tutorial videos, as I can get through technical content quicker by reading, and can backup and reread much easier. Having said that, your video was well presented and the production quality spoke to the success of the teleprompter technique.
