    I believe companies in general play dirty and it is quite difficult to pretend from them transparency, when marketing is all about promoting and fighting against competitors at all cost. It is the influencer's and content creator's responsibility to be transparent and accountable, and if the case, decline the offer of collaboration.

      I just wonder if you can trust an influencer even if not disclosed any partnership.
      Maybe im speaking so favarobly about Ace pro because I hope to get insta360 to send me free stuff etc.
      My point is, the disclosure is no guarantee that the influencer isnt well… under the influence of some hidden agenda.

      Companies don't get to where they are without "cutting corners a.k.a. shady practice", ALL companies do this and I mean ALL. Just because you disclose that you're sponsored doesn't make you 'honest' automatically. I take any reviewers on social media with a grain of salt. Do the research on the company and their history, go to "non social media type" veteran reputable websites that do written reviews. Buy the product and do your own testing, most stores have a great return policy if you're not happy with the product. I get sent accessories from a few companies and I give my honest review, all good reviews will always have negative elements, there is no such thing as a perfect product imo. Free test products is NOT the same as sponsorship no matter what anyone here tries to tell you, Sponsorship is a contractually signed agreement with set creator and the brand and under supervision of the brand. Oh yah, they also get paid and paid well. I get free products to review and I have full control of my content, I'm not paid one cent, yes, product has value but I ain't selling my soul for the price of accessories lol.

    While I agree that any claims or reviews by internet "influencers" are to be taken with a grain of salt due to their biases, be it monetary or for freebies, I don't agree that a review cannot be truly objective.
    I can starightaway think of people like Gerald Undone, Camera Conspiracies and Originaldobo as very honest, to the point reviewers. They don't try to sugarcoat their pain points.
    So when a review is sponsored, it immediately takes away its credibility as an objective review and treated as more of a showcase or a preview.

    • @MiyagisRant
      @MiyagisRant 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Any sponsorships under signed contract is not a review and should never be considered as a review. Sponsorships are signed contracts between the creator and brand and under the brands umbrella. All content are reviewed before they are posted and creators are paid to do the work under brand guidelines. They are more "promotional" content creators if you ask me. That said, just because you're not sponsored doesn't you can't be bias, ie. fanboys. Most fanboys aren't sponsored or given free products to try, they will always protect the brand and their products no matter how inferior their device is, we see this all the time. As for the creators you mentioned, how do you know they are genuine or honest? by their demeanor or what they tell you on their channel? And I can think of one you listed sugarcoats all the time ;) I'm a content creator and I hardly trust myself lol See, I have no vented interested, I do it for fun, i'm retired and I'm not a career content creator that's making money off YT so I could care less, but I am here to help people make the right decisions for whatever brand ;)

  • @BrianCatalano
    @BrianCatalano 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I appreciate your unique perspective and it's fair we should all presume there's bias everywhere... And we should all be critical! Yet, sadly a lot of consumers put too much power in the hands of influencers and can't discern hyperbolic promotions when a product is being forced to them vs a more objective review that doesn't ignore the faults of the product!
    So I totally agree we should all be less naive about the process and even if it's a non-sponsored review, we should know there's going to be an inherent bias.
    Yet, for me I prefer that sponsored reviews should be disclosed because then I know without question to be cautious. I've seen cameras reviews that almost persuaded me to buy a product until I watched a small TH-camr review it and realized that the faults of the camera were purposely being hidden in the previous video.
    I think that's why people like your reviews because you are so honest about the good and bad of them... But who knows how honest we would be if we were given a briefcase full of cash!? I know, I'd have to work extra hard to be objective in that 'case'...

    • @TSCameraGear
      @TSCameraGear  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      All good points.but I think you should always be cautious not just when something is sponsored. Its a cruel world, and people lie and exagarate all the time. Heck even I do that sometimes :)
      And so here is the question, can you trust unsponsored youtubers?
      They can still lie for all sorts of reasons.
      Or maybe they are projecting something that just isnt you. A personal preference, a perspective that doesnt include the flaws.
      There are flaws in the ace pro that I havent mentioned yet because they dont matter to me. And I assume people will feel the same, but thats not always the case.
      Which means that sponsorship disclosure isnt a guarantee for anything.
      And vice versa, can a sponsored video not be trusted just because its sponsored?
      When I make a choice to purchase or invest in something I do my research, and l listen to different people, but the choice and decision is mine. And I never blame bad purchases on paid influencers or financial advisers. I take responsibility for myself.
      Im a grown boy after all ;)

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TSCameraGear excellent counterpoints... I think, like anything, trust has to be earned the hard way over time, and there are some influencers who are generally more critical or less...and a spectrum on that scale... And within that, people who may be more, consciously or not, biased by a sponsor... And then within that, the amount for which a sponsor gives a creator, could scale up or down on that influence.
      Regardless, we should all do our due diligence before we make any purchases and always take responsibility for our own actions.
      Finally, we should presume most brands will default to being shady if they can get away with it! Looks like insta got their dirty laundry aired this time...and I'm sure it will happen again with other brands!

    This is a perfect explanation of this whole saga. I totally agree. I will say, however that I am sponsored by Insta360 they have paid me to make videos but they have never asked me to not disclose it, or showed any signs of dodgy dealings, so I think either there was a rogue few employees or some people were not trained properly. These creators that slag off one company and then the next video is a sponsored video for another company need to really look at themselves. The companies are not the problem.

    I do agree that you should go into watching every review expecting some sort of bias from the reviewer but unfortunately, internet culture loves to discredit people and will find any and every loophole to do so. I've just recently started content creating and I could care less about likes or subscribes. I'm here to help viewers and it's a great time killer for me. I didn't get on YT to make money like some of these 'fake' content creators on here. Let's be realistic, if some of creators are going around throwing words like "ethics" or "good company practice", these same people should do a search on the other 'two' companies on their 'ethical practices' and 'shady tactics' LOL Makes me laugh. Insta360 doesn't have to do all these alleged things these content creators are saying, they just make good products...period. Why is it BS that you should not disclose that you are sponsored or paid. The reason is simple, those who are sponsored or paid can be perceived as not being honest or trustworthy. All companies that want to collaborate with a creator want the best possible marketing of their products. Therefore, it is often the case that you as a creator are told or scripted about what you should say or mean. Is it honest or credible. I also have products from Insta360 and love their products. I am not sponsored by them, of course I want a collaboration with them.

I've always believed that you should never watch just 1 or 2 reviews, heck, I watch 20 to 30 reviews and I read reputable review sites before I make any purchase decision weighing out the pros and cons on my own, it's called critical thinking which we lack these days. Espen, you know I do reviews but in 99% of my videos, I will tell people to go out and watch more reviews or even try it and if you don't like it return it and it doesn't have to be the brand i'm show casing ;)

    Outcome the same, same review, same conclusion but there is a huge difference in declaration.
    Disclose you're paid = I can trust you're moral enough. I'll take what you say with a grain.
    Don't disclose = You're unscrupulous and a paid shill
    I'll treat both the same with appropriate scepticism, as we should all content. However if someone isn't willing to disclose being bribed, they're a bad person. Simple as that. They're taking money secretly and it impacts credibility to their character, not the review.

    • @MiyagisRant
      @MiyagisRant 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The problem with that is and why we are seeing more and more of this now is that for a long time, there's been a negative impression on reviewers that if they are paid or sponsored or given free products to try they are automatically bias... see where I'm going with this? it's a double edge sword, unfortunately not many think like you anymore ;)

    • @Cashyonyt
      @Cashyonyt 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@MiyagisRant Yeah, but when you know its sponsored you know its biased. If they don't disclose it over time, no one will trust reviewers at all. None of this also addresses that in numerous countries not declaring is actually illegal, so they'll have to limit the countries that see their videos.
      Ultimately, viewers will trust all reviewers not declaring less, not seeing them at all due to laws and over time will just kill the industry. The moment a reviewer doesn't declare, I would unsub. And I know I am not alone.
      The reality is, as much as a paid review is bias, reviewers tend to fight hard for balance, as they worry their audience will think its biased. When its undisclosed, they won't.

I see it this way, everyone is somewhat 'bias' to their brand as long as they have facts to support it then that's fine. If there is a problem with something, I will call it out even if it's my fav brand, nothing wrong with a favourite brand as long as you don't go to far left and too far right. I'm under no illusion that there is no such thing as a perfect device/brand. Totally disagree with your commentary. Hate the idea of "buyer beware" ALL THE TIME. These shill reviews hurt more than just the buyer. The retailers selling these products will also get hurt by these dishonest reviews because when buyers realize that the product doesn't live up to expectation due to clever omissions of the cons by TH-camrs and then returns the product, the retailer loses profitability, time and having money better spent elsewhere in their inventory. Always 'on' "Critical Mindset" is exhausting. Most of us are NOT experts at every category we wish to buy something in. In areas I'm well versed in I gladly give input to someone looking for advice and do it with integrity. But in areas I'm not an expert in (and there are many), I do come here to TH-cam for guidance. And now, you're saying I have use a critical mindset in knowing if a reviewer is being fully honest or discreetly sponsored when I don't know enough about what I should be looking for in a product/feature set/etc that I want to purchase and coming here looking for help from folks that have far more experience in 'that' category than me.... it's infuriating and a disservice to everyone. We've all asked for buying advice at some point, and the idea that we have to approach each piece of advice questioning the integrity of that advice would makes for a real sad world. If I know up front that content is sponsored I will view with a different 'lens' and mindset. Same way I view infomercials and ads. I think this Insta360 situation can be a good place to draw "a line in the sand" and create some boundaries.

  • @kean4582

    Wow, totally disagree. Part of being critical is not immediately believing in sponsored videos, and getting more info from genuine reviews. Now if they don’t disclose it, then viewers don’t know who to believe. Who would you believe in more, a seller reviewing their product or a buyer same as you reviewing a product? Now if you don’t know who is who then who do you believe in then? This example maybe on the extreme end but it’s basically what it is. Plus you’re shifting the blame to the viewers instead of the creators who really have the responsibility to disclose any sponsorships. Lasty, do you really want to live in a world where creators don’t disclose sponsors?

I’m not even talking about the quality of the review or what’s in it. The issue people are talking about is specifically on the disclosure of sponsors. Plus you said it yourself, they are shady behavior. And by saying you couldn’t care less, then you are condoning it, am I right?

    You don't make movies. You talk about Camera Gear, there is a clear conflict of interest. Iphondo is right on putting light on the issue. Apple paying for people to fake buying is wrong and it would not make right to hype something making what is in fact an advertisement piece sound like an independent review.

  • @DionisFerizi
    @DionisFerizi 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Your logic is so flawed wow ... Disclosing if you're making a profit from the product you're reviewing or not is categorically important for mediums like youtube. A paid review is not a review period. If a company is giving you the product 2 weeks before launch and says here's the product , this is the date of the embargo, after this we're taking the product back, whether you make a video or not. This is how properly make a review.
    This is why people like MKBHD are trusted. They get a product to review, and they're making money from the review not from the company/product. This way you can trust them, because if they lied and the rest of the people who didn't lie come out and say no mate that product is shit, the next video he posts isn't going to get the views, he ain't gonna make money.
    on the other hand if you're getting paid to make a review by the company/product, you don't have the incentive for the video to do well , you're getting paid to make the video. Your bias is towards the company that is paying you , not towards your viewers.
    your example with the movies is also super flawed. I'm going to watch a movie for entertainment, in a fictional setting. Just because Bond drives an Aston Martin that launches rockets , i obviously not going to believe that if i but an Aston it will do the same. The whole movie is not about a certain product or company, it's about a character or a storyline.
    on youtube if i'm watching a photographer shoot a race behind the scenes , and he has a canon or sony whatever , you can count that as product placement but the video is not about the camera , it's about the race , he just happens to shoot with that brand , and me as a viewer can judge it that that photographer prefers that brand. If he/she makes a video talking about the camera in that situation but not about the situation, they need to disclose if they're being paid to talk about the camera or they're genuinely making that video.
    I'll give you an example from a famous youtuber , Peter Mckinnon. He has made 1 or 2 videos talking about a new laptop (asus i think? ) and how he's using that on the daily , it has everything he needs bla bla bla and says that it's a sponsored video.
    anyone who watches Peter, knows he's a mac guy , he's been since the beginning, his first set of videos half the screen was his imac ... it's really important for his credibility to disclose that he's sponsored, otherwise he'd be a liar and lose all credibility.
    You can say but he still did lie. ... we can't know that ... for all we know he was sponsored for 2 months and he did use it for those 2 months.
    you can have product placement in your videos without being sponsored... you can drink a red bull , or have a red bull fridge on the background. Nobody will say anything ... if you're making a video about how the new red bull taste is the most refreshing summer drink , and you're getting paid to say that, now you need to disclose it. Because you're directly influencing people.

      Also as far as sponsorship goes, I break them down into 2 types, full sponsorship with editorial control of the final product and sponsorship with no editorial control.
