Great rock band from the 70's-80's. They had so many great songs such as "Lorelei", "Suite Madame Blue", "Come Sail Away", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", "Babe", "The Best Of Times", "Mr. Roboto", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Why Me", "Borrowed Time", "Rockin' The Paradise" etc.
I saw these guys twice, the first time in 1978 at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ. It's a small venue on the boardwalk, back in 1934, the S. S. Morro Castle ran aground there. I also saw Heart there in 1977 and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes in 1978, too.
I can’t even imagine the hours of practice for that intro! What an incredible gift and he chooses to share that gift with us!! How blessed are we?!? Thanks for a great reaction! 🎶💕
I saw Styx in ‘97. They reunited for a nanosecond and went on tour. I’d say Dennis DeYoung is the primary lead. Tommy Shaw sings lead on several songs. James Young “JY” also sings lead on some songs. I saw Dennis DeYoung with his band perform all the songs from The Grand Illusion album on its 40th anniversary. He still sounded so good. I was supposed to see him again but the pandemic hit. He never rescheduled that tour.

Their original drummer, John Panozzo....twin brother of Chuck (bass), was a fantastic, thunder drummer, who sadly died in 1996! The man on lead vocals and keys on this is Dennis DeYoung, who is an excellent singer, musician and songwriter.....he started the band with the Panazzo brothers in a garage in the late sixties! Tommy Shaw joined the band beginning with the Chrystal Ball album. The classic Styx lineup is Dennis DeYoung (Lead vocals, keyboards), John Panozzo (Drums) Chuck Panozzo (Bass), James "JY" Young (Lead Vocals, lead and rhythm guitar) and Tommy shaw (Lead Vocals, lead and rhythm guitar). The first two albums I ever bought were Styx albums, when I was 15/16 years old.....and I became a fan! A couple of years later when I was a senior in HS, an incoming sophomore became my gf......and we shared a love of Styx, as they are her favorite band! After decades of separation, she is my wife now of over 5 and a half years. The chorus to this song is my ringtone for her!

Need to check out more Styx. Any song from the 1996 “Return to Paradise Theater” recorded concert might be the penultimate versions of each song. That is also the beginning of year of Todd’s run as the drummer, replacing the recently deceased original drummer, John Panozzo.

Great reaction - my vote for a follow up would be "Suite Madame Blue" live which I think was in the top 5 vocal performances of ALL time ! Like to hear what you think
All their 70s albums are magic. My preference is The Serpent is Rising. It’s heavy, haunting and cerebral. It’s not for those who prefer top 40 type stuff but for those who want to put on headphones, close their eyes, and go on a journey. Their newer album Cyclorama is a hidden gem and a few years back their album called the Mission has some killer tunes on it.
Styx was such a great 70's band. I loved everything they did up to and including Paradise Theatre. Sad when the band split, not sure if both bands that came out of Styx are still touring. If you like 70's Styx then you would most likely like 70's Kansas.
Dennis and Tommy were the two main lead vocalists for Styx. Every once in a while, JY Young would sing lead. Especially before Tommy joined the band in 1976.
I've seen Styx in concert twice, but unfortunately without Dennis DeYoung. His keys and voice are incredible. I like Tommy Shaw, but Dennis is iconic Styx!

Styx has been my favorite band since 1977 and "The Grand Illusion" album. This song is their first hit, and as Dennis DeYoung says he wrote it in 1972; and it became the first ever "Power Ballad". This live recording has been cleaned-up a lot so it is watchable, but it is quite distorted at times and a product of the live equipment of the day. Check out the studio version or live from the "Return To Paradise" tour(with Todd on Drums) in 1996 (23 years after its release)( th-cam.com/video/2tJ0ZW55U1I/w-d-xo.html ). Styx has always been with 3 lead singers/songwriters and so varied and blended styles. At first it was Dennis, James "JY" Young, and John Curulewski; and then Tommy Shaw when John C. left in 1975. Their best songs came from the collaborations of different influences: Dennis' classical and theatrical, JY's hard/metal rockin', and Tommy Shaw's southern acoustic and southern rock (and John Curulewski's hard rock and jazz-rock fusion). Tommy and JY are still touring with some appearances by Chuck Panozzo(the original bass player). I'm sure you've also heard the heart of Styx, "Come Sail Away"(Album: th-cam.com/video/eYCFrcCqh7Q/w-d-xo.html, Live: th-cam.com/video/VMFVkGA1Qfw/w-d-xo.html ; and NOT the "Official Video" which is short for MTV). Some deep cuts (but fan favorites) are: "Man In The Wilderness"(Tommy) and "Castle Walls"(Dennis). More: "Young Man"(James "JY" Young), and "A Day"(John Curulewski), "The Grove Of Eglantine"(Dennis), "Man Of Miracles"(James "JY" Young), "Best Thing", "Love In The Midnight", and "Clair De Lune/Ballerina". Others: "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue", "Fooling Yourself", "Pieces Of Eight", "Blue Collar Man", "Snowblind", "Queen Of Spades", "Lorelei", "Boat On The River", "Crystal Ball"(live 1996).

@@SueKay-rq1lr Shaw joined Styx in 1975. Shaw sung a LOT of Styx songs as LEAD SINGER long before Dennis was fired. Renegade being one. And the story already did come out by the other band members many years ago. The band members hated dressing up in costumes, playing robots while ON TOUR. Dennis wanted to take the direction of the music into the 80's Genre as an 80's band, rather than a 70's Hard Rock band. Dennis De Young is the vocalist until late 90's. He was replaced by Canadian Lawrence Gowan, who already had a successful solo career of keyboard rock, so he fits in well with Styx.
Yeah, Dennis DeYoung, the keyboard player, and both guitarists, James "J.Y." Young (no relation) and Tommy Shaw are all lead singers, depending on the song. When Dennis DeYoung left, he was replaced by Lawrence Gowan, who also does his keyboard pieces as well as anything they created for his parts after Dennis' departure. However, wow, they totally skipped Tommy Shaw's solo and replaced it with a 2nd final chorus ... strange.
That piano intro is NOT in the original studio recording. Still, it's one of my all-time favorite Styx songs. Lorelei is not to be missed. For Lorelei, I would check out the studio version.
No it's not on the studio release. It's important to listen to the studio release before listening to live. There are some songs from bands that sound good live but many others don't.
I have all the albums of Styx, Dennis Deyoung is a great singer, but in Styx there's 3 lead singers, you say that you know Tommy Shaw but do you know James Young the heavy voice of Styx, no videos , but listen 'man of miracles' 1974 a powerful song after the introduction on synthetizers th-cam.com/video/VFxY_hqTJTo/w-d-xo.html and 'miss america' 1977 th-cam.com/video/xYikyYL0S00/w-d-xo.html except 2 songs, all the hard rock songs of Styx had on lead James Young......
They are a tribute band now. You can even call them a cover band. JY is the only original of the band.😮 Journey only has one original member. So called Foreigner has no original members.

🎉Please reaction Queen - Liar Live at the rainbow 🥺🥺😅🥰🙏
Usually, whoever wrote the song sang the song
Bands keep the original names for money reasons. Also, that keeps more people coming. Some fans don’t even know who the originals are.
❤️ Styx. When they did LIGHT UP, one of my favorite Styx songs, everyone did “light up”. Pot was everywhere back in the day!
Them monster drinks have cyanide in them
They are not healthy but they don’t have cyanide. That’s a TikTok myth that has already been debunked. Thanks for the heads up though 👍🏻
Dennis DeYoung is the lead singer, and main songwriter. He founded the band. Tommy Shaw, and JY kicked Dennis out of his own band. How unkind is that?
I didn’t even know that was possible! 😳
I didn’t either. It happened to Lou Gramm of Foreigner. 🤔🙄
They are a tribute band now. You can even call them a cover band. JY is the only original of the band.😮 Journey only has one original member. So called Foreigner has no original members.
Dennis’s ego eventually led to his exit and estranged relationship with the rest of the band. A real dick, in everyday terms 😊🎉❤
That’s so unfortunate!
Ok, I'm the only one that HATES this song. I mean I like Styx as a whole but this is some Kenny Rogers shit.
What?! I dig this tune! 🎶
