I'm 43 minutes into this video and here's my comment so far: I'm a retired submarine captain, a nuclear engineer, a writer and speaker; I stood in the top 10% of my class at the Naval Academy ( a long time ago) - so I'm not a complete idiot. I have a mathematical and engineering mind. But when it comes to operating computers I'm basically Freddie Flintstone. That's why I put off for so many years "diving" into the world of CNC. Now I am the owner of a Next Wave CNC machine. And after a lot of frustration with the User's Manuals and other videos this video is the first one that has put me at ease - at least so far. Now I'll continue watching and I'll comment again after I am able to compete a basic carving with my basic SD100 CNC machine.
Well, I feel GOOD. At least I have and know how to use a mouse!
Brad, wow I'm glad to hear that the video is providing you with the clarity and guidance you've been seeking for CNC operation. Your diverse background and expertise are impressive, and it's great to see that you're bridging the gap between your technical knowledge and computer operation in the realm of CNC. Keep watching, learning, and I hope by the end of the video, you'll be confidently crafting with your SD100! Happy cncing brother!
I’m in the exact same boat!
Twenty seven years in Intelligence for the USAF, Ivy League education in medicine and aeronautical engineering but when it comes to computers I can email, pay my bills and social media are the extent of my abilities.
I still use a drafting machine on a drafting table for my designs.
I FINALLY took the leap into both a CNC and laser cutter/engraver and I was utterly out of league.
I’ve watched this video 3 times so far and Garret explains the basics far better than Vetric does.
Now that my CNC has arrived and is operating after several problems with the controller so I’m looking forward to my first actual attempt!!
I at least feel comfortable prior to going to my in person training sessions at Axiom near Nashville in late March.
Fingers crossed!!
I should note that since watching this video, I have successfully created about ten CNC carvings. I've made some mistakes too, but all in all I'm off to a great start, which might not have been so great without this guidance. thanks for your videos and teaching style - it's helpful to this Freddie Flintstone trying to be a George Jetson. Soon I'll be buying some of your CNC router bits.@@IDCWoodcraft
Yeah, the good old reliable T-Square, slide rule and #2 pencil are what I grew up with.....I took "mechanical drawing" in 1967 at a Scottish Boarding School. I was quite good at it, no computers in that classroom! @@medicman520
I haven't finishes your video yet but I must comment now. I learned more in 30 minutes then the 40+ hours I used to view other videos. I started on my phone, but I had to transfer to my TV. I have subscribed and liked this video. I have had my desktop CNC for 6 months and have not used it because I could not find enough information. I knew that my first project had to be successful or I would shelved my CNC machine. Thank you for the most accurate information on CNC. Now it is time to get to work
llkaygifts, I'm thrilled to hear that you found the video so helpful! It sounds like you’re ready to dive into your CNC projects, and I can’t wait for you to start creating. Have fun with your CNC journey!
I am one of the guys that came to CNC late in life (I am now 85 yrs). At last you realise there are people who are not born with the very basic knowledge. Your points made at the beginning of your video are absolutely true. Now to find the rest of your videos.
Welcome to the wonderful world of CNC brother. Happy to have you here.
@@IDCWoodcraft hi am nuwagaba Nicholas from East Africa (Uganda) could please help us on a tutorial about how to tool path photos on wood
I’m glad I found this video and decided to stay to watch the whole thing. I was hesitant to watch such a long video because too many others on TH-cam aren’t worth taking that much time. Honestly, This one is different! I learned a lot. This video is much better than surfing and looking around that are either skipping steps or assume you can jump right in. Thanks Garrett for taking the time to help educate us newbies to the world of CNC. Looking forward to the other videos and getting my bits from IDC Woodcraft.
TR-yn5tb, you are so welcome my friend. Happy to have you here and welcome to the wonderful world of CNC.
I am a retired technology teacher of AutoCAD, CNC lathe and milling, as well as woodshop. For someone beginning to do cnc routing this video is excellent. I can see where many of my other skills will transfer although I will have to learn a different terminolgy for it. I can hardly wait to use this information to work with the Laguna CNC router at Case Western Reserve University's "Think Box" Great presentation Garrett.👍
Tom, wow thanks for all the kind words brother! I'm truly humbled and looking forward to seeing what you create!
Just finished the video on my TV and I feel very confident jumping back into the CNC now.
Thank you Garrett 🙌🏻💪🏼
Sh1tzboutagodown, right on brother! I am excited for you to kick it into high gear.
Garrett I learned more in one video from you than weeks of looking through TH-cam. Thank you.
RichGallagher, right on brother! Glad to hear it.
Garrett is doing the community, an invaluable service! Thank you so much for your cander, your tips, and teaching us neophytes....the dark arts of CNC! Looking forward to my CNC journey IDC
Hateweek1984, thank you so much my friend. Glad you enjoyed this one!
Thank you, I have learned a lot from you . I have had my cnc for about 15 years could not find someone to explain it to me like you ,so i could understand
user-qq6jo7vn5b, you are so welcome brother!
After noodling around with a 15 year old program in my computer this tutorial was highly enlightening with many of the shortcut you exposed working in this old software. This will make the transition to newer software effortless, thanks for the breakdown for us 101’s AKA dummy like me.
gerardpalmer4185, right on brother. Glad to hear this one helped you!
I have watched so many of Garrett's videos on Vcarve I am very confident in my basic design & toolpath skills. THANKS G! While I'm a slightly more experienced beginner, I still benefit from watching these basic vids to refresh my memory.
James, you're so welcome! I'm glad the videos have still been helpful so far my friend! Keep up the great work and happy cutting!
Hi Garret, I loved this video. Well worth 1.5 hours as you explained it at a great slow pace that even old guys like me could follow. My woodwork club just got a CNC machine and we need to learn so it doesn't sit there like a white elephant. I'd previously designed a speaker front baffle but I learned how to do the toolpaths so I could see the model in 3D. Just awesome. Thats going to save a lot of annoying circle routing. My port is an oval shape which is very difficult by hand. This will make cutting them a breeze with absolute accuracy...just like a bought one. Thanks so much. Peter from DIY Full Range Hifi Speakers - Australia.
diyfullrangehifispeakers, Hi Peter! I'm so glad to hear you found the video helpful and that it's making your CNC journey smoother. It sounds like you're going to have a great time with that machine, especially with those oval shapes. Wishing you and your woodwork club lots of fun and learning with your projects! Cheers!
Thanks for putting this video together. I used it to see if I like Vcarve software for before purchasing a CNC. Because of your video there is one more CNC owner out there. Thanks!
John, right on brother that's awesome! I want to officially welcome you to the amazing world of cnc my friend!
I can't thank you enough for this video. Excellent through and through. Also, I received my surfacing bit from you guys and it's excellent! Thank you for everything IDC Woodcraft!
MarkCameron, im glad to hear it my friend! Keep working hard and learning everything you can.
Thank you! Had my CNC for over a year and thanks to your video I was able to make my first project!
willyizaguirre2401, you are so welcome my friend.
Thank You Garrett. This video has helped me more than i can tell you. I have indeed been watching sooo many youtube videos and getting increasingly frustrated with the lack of clear instruction on the basic operation of the software as well as the machine setup. Thank you ! Your hard work to put these tutorials together is very much appreciated.
BobbyHally, you are so welcome my friend. So glad this one helped you!
I viewed the beginners' videos last year and thought I would come back for a review; I still have problems at times. This video is excellent for beginners and those reviewing the basics as well. Thank you, sir, for the instruction. Just a note, I have purchased the beginner set and some of the other bits you sell. I only broke one, working on oak and plunging without a ramp. I am better now.
viewit2500, right on brother! It sounds like you are rocking and rolling over there! I'm glad to hear this video has served you well and it is always here to refresh on anything that gets rusty over time! Keep up the excellent work my friend and happy cncing!
Thank you Garrett!
I’ve been floundering with Vectric pro!
Really frustrated myself for almost 2 weeks trying to get my Axiom to work!
Thought, since I knew carbide, it would be easy-NOT!
These videos that you do are fantastic!!
Thank you!
Davidhittenberger, you are so welcome my friend! So glad to hear you are sorted out and ready to go.
Excellent beginners video. I don't currently own a CNC machine yet, because i am trying to educate myself on how to run the software first to cut down on the mistakes. Thankyou for covering even the most simplest of tasks as these are all new to me. I know the time watching these videos is well spent and I thankyou for all the knowledge and encouragement you give along the way.
Jrz, you are so welcome my friend. Happy CNCing!
Love your videos, always explained in "Layman's" terms making it easy to understand for the absolute beginner like my self
johnrhodes5968, Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear that my explanations are helpful to you as a beginner. Keep practicing and you'll improve in no time!
I HAVE NOT PURCHASED ANYTHING YET, STILL INVESTIGATING. THAT BEING SAID, THIS IS FANTASTIC INFO. CAN'T WAIT TO ORDER MY MACHINE AND SOFTWARE. THIS VIDEO HAS GIVEN ME THE CONFIDENCE TO HAVE SOME FUN MAKING THINGS.
Right on brother! Glad to hear this one helped you. Welcome to the wonderful world of CNC.
Gerrett you're a grate instructor, nice job!
wjackson6240, Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying the content.
I just purchased the Vcarve Pro last night. This video is very helpful in teaching me the basics of the software. Well done!
RobertLacapra, glad to hear this one helped you brother!
Had watched your earlier beginner video, this one is most excellent!
Sledgezzer, so glad to hear this one helped you brother! Happy CNCing.
Thanks to this video I was able to successfully design and complete my first solo CNC project. Great job!
SuperGadkins, right on brother! Im happy to hear it. Congrats on your first successful design.
Garrett Complete dummy here. LOL! I'm looking to use this in my hobby-business. Inlays on guitars and such. Basically cutting out the inlays and plowing out where the inlay goes! Headstock head plates and sound hole rosettes. I believe the Cut2D will do what I need. Thanks
I would not recommend cut 2D for the inlays that you want to make. You want v carve inlays. They seat much better. That will require you to get vcarve desktop or pro. The difference between desktop and pro is desktop will only allow you to work with projects or no bigger than 24 in. So if you're going to inlay on guitar next, you will probably want to use the pro version . That would be this one
sienci.com/product/vectric-vcarve-pro-v11/?ref=idcwoodcraft
To be honest I did think the video was very basic and proceeded very slowly - however I acknowledge that there are people who do need that level of instruction. That being said I also found it to be informative. It answered more questions for me than I thought it would and I learned quite a bit. Definitely easier than poking around. So now I'll have to continue watching your videos :). The one remaining question I need to resolve is - with a Snapmaker 2.0, with it's bed size, why do I need VCarve Pro instead of VCarve Desktop. I see in the comparison chart there are some differences so hopefully subsequent videos will make that clear. Thanks!
fredlef, great question brother! The biggest difference is that with Vcarve pro you are not limited to the 24"x24" project size. With bigger machines, this becomes a big problem.
found you by accident and am so glad! been fighting this for a year now. I'm good with basic 2d but want to de 3d stuff ... been trying to learn Fusion 360 but failed, so saw one of your videos and decided to get vcarve and follow along Hopefully finally be able to do the 3d carvings I want soon
ulissesortiz9495, I'm glad you found my videos helpful! Vcarve is a great software for creating 3D carvings, and I'm sure you'll find success with it. Keep practicing and experimenting, and you'll be carving intricate 3D designs in no time!
Thank you Garret. I learned more in this video on the basic, than Marks video. I am only in part 3, but now I can put his to more use. I like Marks dont get me wrong. With yours I can know use my Vcarve to design.
debbieleasure1637, You're very welcome! I'm glad to hear you found the video helpful.
The best online tutorial that I have followed!! The pace is great and the content relevant for me to understand and follow along.
I am so happy to hear this one helped you brother! Happy CNCing.
Having many years of self thought Photoshop a lot of this I have already learned and I believe it will come natural to me. I see The key strokes are the same. Photoshop has always been my hobby, also all types of woodworking and have a passion for learning As Much as I can before I go. 69 today and in the market to finely buy a CNC once I do my research.
dduncan, right on brother! I am so happy to hear this video helped you. Keep working hard my friend.
You did a great job on explaining the Vectric program to the beginners. I wish I had seen this when I was starting out.
richardwilliams5520, glad to hear it brother! Happy CNCing.
I have been using VCarve as well as your video for a while. Your Videos provide great information at a rate that can be easily absorbed. Please keep up the good work. Even having listened to several of your advance video I came back to this one. It is a great refresher on the fundamentals.
Truman, right on brother! I'm glad the videos have been helpful for you so far! And thanks for all the kind words!
Amazing video for beginners! Also, thank you for the database file for the bits. Huge assist!
jerryennis, Thank you for watching! I'm glad you found the video helpful. Enjoy using the database file for your projects!
Glad for guys like Garrett helping us newbies out. I have purchased a large CnC and would like to make my own stair stringers. I assume this won't be too difficult to route the stringers and risers, using V-Carve Pro. Anyone ever make their own before? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
sparky494112, That's awesome that you're diving into making your own stair stringers! Using V-Carve Pro will definitely be a big help in routing them out. Make sure to measure accurately and secure your material well before cutting. Remember to do a test run on scrap wood before using your final pieces. Good luck!
Thanks, this is very helpful. I’m brand new to CNC and Vectric.
threedogsandacamper503, you are so welcome my friend.
Thanks Garrett this was very informative and simple to follow ! 👍
andrewmcallister9250, You're welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful. Keep practicing and you'll get even better at woodworking!
This has been a great help. I also love your bits. Still curious about the open bag of M & M's. Thanks for the cup.
stephantaylor3433, you are so welcome for the extra goodies brother! Happy CNCing.
it was basic (just like you said)... I waited and waited and then finally the toolpaths explanations was just what was needed. thank you.
Ailesonlab, you are so welcome my friend. Glad this helped clear some things up.
Im considering getting a CNC (Newbie). The machine itself doesn't scare me, the Software doesn't scare me, it's the router bits and the feed and speeds that concerns me. Seems like there are so many variables. Where to start? @@IDCWoodcraft
I have learned sooo much, thank you. I will keep watching your videos, including Kyles.

Hi Garrett:
I just bought the VCarve Pro Masterclass through your link below. Looking forward to learning. I am also planning to order the VCarve Pro software once I get a hang of it, of course through your link.
YuvakTuladhar, right on brother! Congrats on jumping into CNC with the course.
Garrett thanks for the great video. I downloaded v/pro trial and will work around in this version till I get my longmill hopefully sometime in 2024. That will be my pre retirement gift and I will be purchasing bits from you at that point. Keep up the fantastic work!
RandyNason, that is a great idea brother! Now is the time to learn the software and get up to speed on when you are ready to jump in head first!
Thanks for this Garrett, after last night's Wednesday get together, I had more questions, and this has answered it. Thanks so much for your help.

I finally have enough confidence to try out my machine.
JamesSmith-eh6sd, That's awesome to hear! Just remember to take your time and stay safe while operating your machine. Good luck with your project!
Just started, but like the content so far, no idea of the difference between these two and better the fact that you can upgrade them. Would love to see a comparison between Shapeoko s/w and vCarve. A ton of videos on what it does on their site showing you how to use it, including the differences between the free and standard versions.
QAYWSXEDCCXYDSAEWQ, I totally understand brother, sometimes it's hard to find the info about the different versions of the Vcarve software. Basically, these are the main differences between the 3 versions:
Vcarve Desktop: You can create designs with dimensions up to 24" x 24". Depending on what you are making, this may or may not work for you. You can also cut out 3D projects, but you CANNOT design/create your own 3D project. Here's the link → bit.ly/3D4CwjH
Vcarve Pro: You can create larger projects that are not limited to specific sizes (unlimited dimensions). You can also cut out 3D projects, but you CANNOT design/create your own 3D project. Here's the link → bit.ly/3d4WrEU
Vcarve Aspire: The same as Pro in terms of dimensions (unlimited dimensions). But you CAN design and edit 3D projects. Here's the link → shrsl.com/37pw9
These are the basic differences. But you can also choose to purchase one and upgrade to another for just the difference in price. Ex: if you buy the Desktop version, you can always upgrade to the Pro version at a later time if you end up needing it for just the difference in price between the two.
As for the free vs paid version, you can design projects with the free version but the only difference is you wont be able to save the toolpaths to cut it out!

I would like to see you bundle your videos in bundles of classes in a progression working up in skill levels, for example top 10 videos for beginners than intermediate and finally advance cnc’er. I am definitely not a editor so I have no clue how hard this would be to do. I love your videos because of your teaching style. Thanks for all your help. I just recently got this software and am about 6-8 months from getting a cnc due to moving out of state. Just trying to get ahead of the game.

i'm not a total newbie to CNC work and to VCarve although my prior experience was with VCarve version 6.5. That being said, Garrett's presentation is a little too verbose for me, but considering it is aimed at folks who are brand new to VCarve that is understandable. Otherwise, as a refresher the video is excellent.

If you have the time, adding chapters to make it easier to come back to this for reference would be awesome if!
NathansWorkshop, Great suggestion! Adding chapters for easier navigation is definitely something I can look into for future videos. Thanks for watching!

JamesScanning, glad you liked this one brother!
Love your videos. I am trying to carve an outline of the Great Lakes. How do I get just the outline and not a full depth carving .. TYIA
jackkaterberg9040, that is a tricky one to answer over comments brother! Join our live sessions on TH-cam at 8PM EST Wednesdays, Kate and I would be happy to help you with your questions then.
Great Video. New to CNC but not to a woodshop. Highly recommend the video. One question I have is there a video on lining up the wood, using the Z Probe and starting the project? Heading to the IDCwoodcract site now!!
elizabethmooneysimon4241, I'm sorry. I do not have a video on that subject at the moment. It is one that I've been asked about so has gotten on the "video to make" list. As far as time frames, I cannot say when it will be done.
You should sign a deal with the company that published dummy books and you should do one for vcarve pro since there isn't one on the market
robandcrystalheard, I like that idea brother! That would be a fun book to create for other CNCers.
super helpful! Thank you!
Paul, glad it was helpful brother!
I would like to see how you set the bits for the tool changes without the tool setter
Darrell, I recommend taking a look at this video here: th-cam.com/video/UaDMzl_ZXVg/w-d-xo.html. I think you'll find it super helpful!

Thank you in advance
Michel
Michael, you're so welcome brother, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I know choosing a machine can be tough brother. Of course, I'm a little biased being a longmill guy myself! But there are a lot of really great machines out there. I always recommend going with the machine and company that feel like the right fit for you and what you're looking to create. At the end of the day, that's what matters most!
