      It’s what I use. In many ways, the perfect birding/wildlife lens. I primarily shoot birds in bush and some (not much) BIF. The AF is not as snappy as A1/A9 but no slouch. There are times I miss a full frame sensor, however.

    Nice flow to this video combining several topics. There is no question that having quality equipment helps. However, the person behind the camera is the key. A lifelong Nikon user, I look back on a photo taken with a Nikon D70, D90, D7100, D7500, or my current D500, and the constant is the photographer, and how they envision the photo. The Nikon Z8 and the new 180-600mm seem like the next jump for my wildlife photography. The Z8 is the first Nikon mirrorless that checks all my boxes.

    On the topic of gear vs skill: I'm a beginner of 5 months. I just upgraded from a 7D Mk II with Sigma 150-600 to the R5 with the 100-500 because I wanted higher quality images. Tbh, did I NEED an R5 at my experience level? Probably not. But it's made a huge difference. Better gear may not make up for skill, but the more advanced AF system with animal eye detect, higher IQ, better ISO handling, and IBIS (plus the sharpness of the native Canon L lens) has gotten me shots I would have never gotten before. It's pretty incredible. I know saying a $6,000 setup is better than a $1,200 setup is stating the obvious :P I just mean the better technology has helped a lot at my experience level. I had to work a lot harder to get good shots with the 7DMII and they were a lot fewer and further between and still lacked the true sharpness that I've been able to get with my R5 even on day one of using it. Best money I ever spent. This is not an ad for Canon, I swear lol

    Back when I was mid career - Nikon F4s with the 600mm f4.0. $$$$$
    And - there was the 40+ rolls of Kodachrome per day - so that was $1,000 . And maybe zero pics in focus.
    Now - Cameras are magic, lenses are magic and everything is magic.

    Latest gear versus skill. Good title. I'm working with a Canon rebel t7 and a Canon rebel d1000 xs. I'm a long timer/old timer. I've done most of my photography with slr film. Since 08 digital. I think skill over shadows gear. Sometimes it feels like the new gear makes photography like shooting fish in a barrel. New gear is way beyond be responsible for my budget. There are some great advantages to the new gear for sure. I would love to try it. I'm doing bird photography with the above cameras and a Canon 75 300 4 and a Jintu 420 800 8.3 and I think I'm having some good success.

    it's a shame the market is forcing these channels to focus on gear rather than the birds. What matters to me is expanding my knowledge of birds, where they live, how they behave, and then being able to tell their story through photos. If I'm in the field and someone starts talking gear with me, I'll be polite, but overall, I'm more interested when people want to talk about the birds.

    I have the mk1 Canon 400mm f2.8, but I tend to use my 100-400 L ii as the prime is far to heavy to lug around for hours now I have aged a little too much! Also the 100-400 is pretty good on the R5 with the 2x extender, even for butterflies a distance away. I have been tempted by the R7, but stick to using the R5 on crop mode, primarily because the sensor is better on the R5. OK, 17mp instead of 32, but I did 30 years using film, and my first pro DSLR was 2.1mp!

    Hey Jan and Glenn, thanks for yet another episode fully packed with awesome birds from all over the globe !
    Glenn's comments around 3:16 sounded to me like a business case for the patented 300-800/8L which I'm dreaming about to be similar in price as the 100-500 so about as much what a prosumer could afford .. Canon, did you get this ???
    Last year in Iceland I learned a lot (coming from DSLR) and I had lots of birding fun with the R6 and 100-400Lii, but I returned a tad frustrated with the lack of reach and the EF extenders were softening the images too much.
    Now using the R5 and 100-500, my learning curve in Bali was less steep but I did get rid of (most of) my reach-frustrations 😛
    So I plan to stick with this gear for some more years, and now I should focus more on making the most of the circumstances when they present themselves.

    For general photography the gear is phenomenal. You almost can’t go wrong. For specialty photography you might need upgraded gear. Birds have a need for longer reach and fine detail. The subjects don’t want you to take their pics so better gear is a great plus. The R5 is great for the high MP sensor. You also have crop mode for waterfowl when you just can’t get close. Canon is the best IMHO but all major mfrs. are getting good systems for this special birding category.

    Nice topics in this session. I love the idea of a 180-600 mm for canon. But then new lens line up in canon is so frustrating these days - wonder whom they are making these lens for - they are so unaffordable and not great for birding. Nikon's hitting all the right notes IMHO. Regarding the Gear and skill topic, love your points. To sum up differently, I would say you can have great gear and software, but without skill those wouldn't make a difference. Skill in handing the gear, and processing as well!

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Totally agree, in the end great gear and great skills goes hand in hand.
      I think Canon has focused on the high-end users and was somewhat overwhelmed by the unexpected success of the mirrorless system. Which shows in the somewhat makeshift Rf big prime lenses and kind of non existent mid range teles at decent price points

    Thanks guys, I'm thinking about this a lot now. Just spent a lot getting a canon R5 and 100-500, but feeling limited at the long end. Now I'm jealous of Nikon's 180-600 that takes tele's so well, and the Z8 makes it a really attractive proposition. However I'll lose a lot of money if I trade in for it, so I think I need to work on extracting more from my current setup thats already excellent.

    Hi guys, thanks for the video. I watched it yesterday and thought about it some more today. After getting into hobbyist level bird photography I agree it is a mixture of skill and equipment except for one element of technology today that trumps everything IMO. And that frames per second for BIF and moving wildlife. You can be out and about, study behaviour, compose images and operate your equipment with your eyes shut, but fps will give you the best chance of getting “that shot “. I don’t have much skill, have ok equipment but in amongst all my shots there is the occasional gem because of fps. Just my opinion.

    Nice episode guys. I think Canon are doing a good jog to create less expensive cameras with amazing resources for bird or wildlife photographers, but I fell disapointed by the price of the lens. Here in Brazil the RF 100-500 is BRL 25,000, the price of a car. This is the reason why I still keep my Sigma 150-600 as my main lens to use with my R7. Of course gear is important, but sometimes you are able to take good shots even with simple gear. I always do long trails and many times in difficult terrain, so for me a zoom lens is the perfect option to just carry around instead of a big prime lens.

    R8 has the tiny battery 🔋 though. Now you might think you so well I'll just bring a few extra batteries. The problem is for instance I bought this camera from My Wife and when she's doing photoshoot standing next to me. I have the R5 with the battery pack so I'm running to of the bigger batteries at the same time so I can shoot all day. Up to 4,000 shots and still have 50% battery life. But she woke literally charger battery put it in the camera walk beside me for 15-20 minutes and then when we see our first bird she'll pick up her camera to take a shot and it just dies. There's no warning there's no 50% number at the top. You just see three bars of battery life and then there's nothing! She has missed so many great shots because of this camera. We are starting to reconsider our purchase.

I don't see it convincing you to change systems BUT it would be very interesting to get your take on how for MFT has come in relation to full-frame gear. For me this would definitely be a must-see video on your channel...although I already feel that way about most of your videos. I would say about gear that if you are going in your park to photograph birds than I'll go as far as go with what ever you got even a phone...but if you plan to go papua new guinea and you know you will be there once in the life time go with the best gear you can have even rent it just for the trip. My point in this is, the gear gives you more options expands the possibilities and help with creating opportunities ( shooting in darker places, shooting objects far away, shooting fast objects ). but if you are going to the same place every day even with f11, lens that is sharp only on 100mm of its focal length or camera that is sharp only on 100 ISO and have 8mpx and you need to fill the frame you will eventually find that perfect opportunity if you are going to the place everyday and results will be as good as r5 with 600 f4 :) but not always we have the possibility to go places again or you are just working pro that needs to deliver and can't relay that the conditions and angles will be perfect then go for pro stuff your window for great photos will be expanded. :) but old cheap gear dont close the door for great photos just adds work to the process :)

    Gear DOES MATTER.. people can say that all the time I understand by having a professional capability that you get better images easier. I use the Canon R5 and the other day I was using the r p to do birds in flight. What a chore that was. I had a about a 25% success rate. With my R5 I have about a 98% success rate. So yes I can get birds in Flight with something like the RP and I mean beautiful dogs. But the success rate is a lot less. And the image quality is less. I like the 45 megapixels on my camera sometimes I'm so close to the birds. We have Osprey right up the street from where I live they catch fish sometimes they get so close to me that I have to go to 100 mm on my lands and they're still bigger than the frame!

    One thing that is often mentioned is the higher keeper rate of the latest cameras.
    I don't care about keeper rates: ONE great picture is all I need!
    I know you'll argue that a higher keeper rate will increase the chances of getting that one great shot, but as always I like to be provocative: The optical viewfinder of a DSLR will make it easier to fire at just the right split second! At least in theory.
    Arthur Morris often told a story of someone who fired a long burst, and he toyed with the idea of suggesting to compare the man's 200 shots to Morris' own 3 with the stipulation that the one who took the best picture wins the other guy's gear.

    Ha ha! Since I lack skill, gear of good quality is very important to me ;-) Then, ofc, the depth of my wallet isn't deep at all (retired bus driver here) so price must also play an important part in the equation. On top of that, so is weight! Therefore I sit, rather contentedly, with a R6 Mark2 & RF100-500 combo, with the older R6 as backup. I've added the RF 800/11 to the lot, it works very well with the R6ll. As long as one is aware of its limitations (slow, min focus range 6 meters) it fills its function SO well.

    Gear matters, of course, but much less than you'd think! Sure if you're stinking rich, why not buy everything? But throughout my life I've always been forced to look very carefully at my budget. A lot of toys that my school mates had were just completely outside my financial reach, so from a very young age I learned simply to accept this fact and not worry about it. Gear envy never entered my mind and still doesn't.
    I was very happy with what I had in the film days (Canon Eos 50E / elan E), but the enormous advantages of digital photography were extremely obvious to me! And in 2006 when the Olympus SP-510UZ came and gave me much better image quality than I'd ever seen in my film pics, and also no shutter lag which had been a major issue in earlier models, I immediately and completely dropped film photography!
    I wanted a DSLR, of course, but the problem was that full frame was prohibitively expensive for me, and APS-Cs had this annoying crop factor that annulled my wide angles. For years I was hoping that full frame prices would drop, but they never did. Finally in 2012 I surrendered and bought a 550D (rebel t2i) and a couple of affordable lenses. Sadly none of my old film lenses were sharp enough for APS-C, not even my Tamron 200-400 F/5.6 that had been perfect in the film era (apart form the AF).
    Eventually I upgraded to a 70D/Sigma 150-600 combo and later added the 90D, and that's what I still use today.
    And if that doesn't give me the results I'm after, then I'll just have to get better at using it!
    I see no mirrorless camera on the market that will do for me.
    Full frame is out of the question. Even if I could afford it, which I can not, I would never pay that kind of money for a camera.
    The R7 is priced okay, but it has two serious issues: No third party RF AF lenses exist (and the Canon lenses are too expensive for me), and there are even problems with adapted third party EF lenses.
    So again, if I want better pictures, I'll just have to get better.
    But actually I do get a lot of very nice pictures with my 90D combined with either my Sigma or my excellent little Canon 55-250, so I really don't need a mirrorless camera.

    Jan, you keep mentioning how amazing the image stabilization on the Nikon lenses. You use these lenses with the Nikon Z9. So does the stabilization come from the combination of the ibis in the camera and the vr in the lens. I own the Nikon Z50, that doesn't have ibis in the camera. I suspect the stabilization will not be as good.

    • @jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas
      @jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're right. The Z 8 and Z 9 are using "Synchro VR" called by Nikon. This means the built-in lens VR and the built-in camera IBIS are working together for extended stabilization. But hand-holding such lenses as the 180-600 for a extended period of time is rarely.the case for wildlife photography.

    Gear matters a TON. But the thing that kind of messes me up, is that if I hit the lottery today, there just isn't any gear, made at any price, that would be a lot better (overall) than the relatively cheap, super light gear I'm using now, "for my purposes" :( I'd love to have an upgraded R7... Or should I just say, a pro level crop sensor camera (don't even care what brand)... But nobody makes one :( I'd also love to have a WAY improved 800 F11 (F8 ?) but nobody makes that either :( Nikon makes the PF 800 F6.3... but that's still a bit heavy, pretty darn expensive, and they don't make a pro level crop sensor camera to go with it, so it would still only be 800mm :( Long story short, for all the faults of my R7 + 800 F11, I just don't know what could possibly be better for my circumstances ? BTW, even now, at a 1280mm equivalent, I find myself not close enough to my birds more often, than I do, too close. Just got some of my best photos this year, of Blue Grosbeak. LOVED the shots. Biggest problem was they were heavy crops.... which is a bummer, as I might want to print one. TY for the video guys :)

      @Chris_Wolfgram 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jan_wegener I did actually try Gigapixel for the images I mentioned. I'm a little undecided for how they look on my 4K screen anyway. Printing might be a different story. I was thinking of some medium sized paper prints, as a test. Then If I were really happy with them, I might go on and put one on aluminum, or sandwiched acrylic 🙂
      But yes, I might be getting a little greedy, because in reality, my gear is doing better for me than any gear I've ever owned. So I should probably just chill out and be happy 🙂 lol
