I've been on quite a few workshops with people I admire, there are always lessons to be learned. The only critique I have about being guided in a foreign environment is that the guides or leaders sometimes gloss over the more common birds that they see all the time and don't realize that these birds are something we may never see again.
That’s one of the challenges I was thinking of when asking Glenn what it’s like to go back to the same spots over and over, so it’s important to find a good balance. Sometimes the more common ones can be more exiting than some small rare brown one
Love these videos, always learn something every time, also agree with leaving some 'context' within the composition, not just having a bird portrait, makes the image more interesting.

Probably my biggest mistake is to not look at the images on my viewfinder in the field. I don’t check as often as I should to check exposure, sharpness, composition. Sometimes I just get excited and shoot away! After 2 years, I’m learning to slow it down a bit, move my perspective, check the background, etc. I usually get a safety shot, then try to work the scene a little. I like to wander and see what there is to see, so there are times my opportunities are very quick! I love the prosets and vibrant with more contrast is my go to also!

I really like the stork shot. I think it was actually shot at dawn, not at night, because the moon is very low in the sky. The photographer probably underexposed the image severely to achieve a silhouette effect. He also shot from a long distance away with a telephoto lens to get the moon large in the frame. Well done!

Guys, I am going to a three week photo trip to Ecuador beginning of June. I am a landscape photographer, but recently fell in love with bird photography and thanks to God managed to get all the equipment needed. Your videos give me so much valuable information it is amazing. I'v never shot birds before, but will prepare well also thanks to you. This trip should not be underestimated so I study as much as possible and will train soon in Austria at some bird hides. As soon as I take my first bird photograph I will remember you guys both! And to be honest, bird photography amazes me even more than landscapes. There is something very special about these mesmerizing small creatures. God bless you both! ⚓🕊

Thanks for another great video guys. Your tip on finding a good photographer is the top one for me. I definitely benefitted from my half day with you, Jan, and it has been the best investment I've made in photography so far. You were the first person to mention heat haze to me and I've passed that along to others. Since then, I've made friends with an excellent bird photographer and we often shoot together. She has a different style to me, but I've also learnt a lot from her.

Thank you for another great Bird Photography Show. I've been watching these for what feels like several years now (from my personal TH-cam), and they have been incredibility helpful in my journey of wildlife photography. While I have been taking nature photos from the age of 6 (I'm 54 now), it is the last 2 years that my understanding of photography has exploded.
What I wish I new sooner... A deep understanding of how to work with depth of field to create the feel and look that I'm wanting to capture with each particular wildlife moment that I am either filming or photographing. Aidan Banfield

I am not totally convinced by your editing tips. My question is, where do you see the border between editing and faking a photo. In my opinion, I prefer mostly a "not perfect" shot, when I know that this was real, because the reality is not perfect, is it ?
I make my photos look a lot better than reality. It's the style I like.
But it's getting easier and it does take something away from photography. I'm a big dxo fan but I'm worried that you'll soon just click on a bad photo and it will look like a nat geo photo.
I suppose there's a difference between jazzing a photo up to sell and taking a photo for your own pleasure.
I was just looking at Topaz Denoizer and noticed it's been renamed Topaz Photo AI. And while I'm sure a lot of that is marketing BS (everything has to have AI on it nowadays), I did find it's promises to 'enhance the image with AI' a little worrying. Because it's one thing to remove noise caused by the limitations of your hardware, and it's another to use AI to enhance your image by predicting what was there and adding it in. That's up there with Samsung's moon technology, where it's adding a fake moon over any round white light.

@@joepieklI like Topaz Photo AI quite a lot. You can select how much noise to remove. While it also has a sharpening function, I rarely use it because Photo AI adds sharpening just from the denoise. I find a very light touch is best unless the image is extremely noisy. But with very noisy images, Photo AI can leave some odd artifacts. That's the only negative for me. Give it a try.
I think when it comes to editing we all have our own styles and tastes. What it ultimately comes down to is that it is important to learn all the skills needed to do whatever you want to do. Then you can decide how far you like to take an image personally. I perceive nature as vibrant, fun, colourful and unique and that’s what I wanna show with my images

I just wish my first DSLR (350D) already had the tech of like an R7, then I would have been hooked on bird photography much sooner, and would be today a much better and more experienced photographer.
On the other hand, learning the hard way is the way to go. Binge watching all your video would provide tons of knowledge but it's only when one has experienced similar things to what you're discussing that it fully makes sense and that one can make use of the experiences you're sharing because otherwise it's impossible to understand why your tips are so important !

Great Vid and tweek ... My nemesis bird recently is definitely the boreal owl. I just drove 12 hours to Quebec and back. I spent 3 days hiking over a fairly expensive area where it had been spotted frequently with no luck. Then 3 days later and 6 hours away in Massachusett, while photographing a long-eared owl, I heard someone speaking with a very French accent. I got to talking with that person and she informed me that 2 days prior to my arrival in Quebec she had a great session photographing the Boreal owl in the exact location I had been at arghhh.

These days you certainly don't have to use such a low ISO as when I started. This is a good tip and I rarely shoot lower than 1/500th Second today. So a great tip Jan 👍

I like to watch your videos, they are very educational. I do find that Glen’s photos often seem very over sharpened. Just saying….it’s my opinion. Knowing that you openly say that you changed the colour of brown feathers to red astounded me. Why would you record the natural colours of a bird and then change it?
Both have very over-everything in their photos like, overcoloured, oversharpenned, oferedited in general but yet here I am watching them again althougb I'd never edit like them as it's not my style but I love the enthusiasm about birdwatching itself.

We all have different styles and tastes when it comes to editing. Glenn and I like to show the birds as best as possible. So if there’s a missing feather we like to fill it in. Others may not like that, ultimately it’s good to know how to do things and how to improve your images. How far you wanna take things then is totally up to you. To me nature is fun, vibrant and colourful and that’s what I like to show.
In terms of sharpening, I don’t apply any of it, except for some input sharpening in the Raw.
Thanks for the upload, great images and chat, as always. Your tip about ACR is the reason I do all my processing/developing in Photoshop and rarely use Lightroom. You have everything, put the raw through and utilize the adjustments that are only available for raw files then back in later with a separate layer which can the be used to blend in, use blen-if etc or use as a smart object. For me PS is much more powerful and convenient than LR.
LR is easier to use for most, but PS is a lot more powerful ultimately

Yes, the flights home from birding/photography trips are the worst! Just got home from Buenos Aires myself, only 2 flights, but was up well over 24 hours.
My pain point is mastering the correct exposure, I shoot in manual with auto-iso and sometimes I'm disappointed with the image. I have been practicing with higher ISO and its been challenging. My nemesis bird are the warblers... they are so fast. Great tips on this episode.
Yes they can be fast little birds! The difficulty with auto-iso is that you still need to use exposure comp or it’ll not give you the best results. Sometimes I feel like true manual is actually easier

Great video! I wish I knew how much better DSLR is than superzoom camera when I started photographing. And how much better full frame camera is than crop sensor camera when I started using DSLRs. The first time I used my Canon EOS 6D I was amazed how much better the pictures were than with Canon EOS 760D. And how much higher ISOs I could use. 6D (Mark 1) is still my main camera since I never seem to have money to buy newer ones.

I think in the past it has worked, but I believe some people had some issues installing it. You can try and let me know on case it doesn’t work
I’ve been thinking about looking back at old images from as far back as 10-20 years ago and seeing whether marginal shots or shots that pushed the limits of the old sensors (under 10 megapixels) could be salvaged and produce good results using modern software. Would you consider an episode re-editing photos from early in your careers to demonstrate both what you have learned and the power of modern software?
I did a video like that a few months back, it’s definitely worth it!
My nemesis bird is the great grey owl, although we live only 2h away from a great grey owl preserve and we go out searching multiple times every winter. We are usually lucky in terms of snowy owls, great horned owls, and northern hawk owls, but the great grey has eluded us since a chance sighting more than a decade ago. At that time, we were strolling through a meadow when suddenly, a fence post came alive and startled us. Since then, no luck 😢 Mind you, we always turn these outings into a birding adventure and are rarely disappointed!

One thing I would love to see would be you, maybe both, using some budget gear and teaching how people who don't have the funds for an R5/R6II and a prime lens (above my yearly salary!!) but rather a more modest kit, such as a R10 + RF100-400, and showing us how good photographers use these kits and how I can improve my skills without breaking the bank. I enjoy your videos, tips, classes and software additions. Q1: Glenn, did the current social issues in Ecuador affect your trips in anyway, (Amazonia, Andes / Volcano Avenue, Galapagos) and how if so. Q2: Jan/Glenn, I use your packs (and MasterClass techniques I learned from Jan's MasterClass) in PS and LR but am a bit confused on how I can (or even should / could) access PS Raw directly when using LR in my workflow. I generally import all my work (Canon Raw) into LR and then export a copy to PS to do work using layers for my workflow, (Topaz DeNoise AI and such). I have a bit of disconnect in how to relate your PS RAW processing suggestions in my workflow. I do realize LR uses the PS RAW process but it is presented in a much different way and I assume a very general way compared to using PS RAW directly. Maybe there is a new hybrid class / chapter for you to publish? Again, enjoy both of your efforts and hope to someday take one of Glenn's trips.
If you do everything in LR, you basically never leave Camera Raw, since LR is essentially Camera Raw when it comes to the develop section. In your case I’d just do everything in LR and keep your workflow.
Everything I have said can be applied in LR. You don’t have the same layer masking ability, but with the AI masks and not too drastic changes you should be fine to apply a gradient for instance.
Otherwise you could always export your file to PS at the end and then run the CR Filter there
Thanks Jan, I am too engrained in PS layers to do everything in LR (it is just not possible in my workflow, even with AI Masks which I do use but off a layer in PS). I will try the PS CR Filter should I need a bit more raw adjusts control than LR provides, so thank you for that head's up. After downloading my raw file in LR I generally take the raw file into PS, create a layer for Topaz DeNoise AI, then save it as a PSD... then back to LR for basic adjustments, then back into PS with a copy of the LR adjusted PSD for more serious work. Not sure I can actually use the CR Filter on a PSD file at that point but will explore that and/or maybe even a change in workflow. Cheers, Wally. @@jan_wegener

Hi Jan and Glen, Thanks for sharing the tips and tricks. when you are on Monopod or tripod, do you still switch on the image stabilizer? or is it depends on the shutter speed, bird in flight. stationary birds etc? I am still getting mixed results. any tips will be great.

Why do you use the gradient filter in Camera Raw when PS already has a gradient tool? What is the advantage of the former over the latter?
Works differently. I find the camera raw one easier to work since I can apply exposure etc to it

Does your brushpack work on DxO Photolab 7? I am more of a casual shooter and I am not willing to pay subscription for Lightroom or Photoshop. Also what do you think about buying DxO Pureraw4 along DxO Photolab? I don't like the workflow of separate developing RAWs and editing, but I shoot mosty with m43 or R7 with 800mm f11 in central Europe so I deal with lots of noise.
No, it only works with Adobe. I like pure raw, but I don’t use photolab.
Hi Jan Can you give me any thoughts (pros and cons) on the Flex Shooter Pro Head you use. Does it REALLY substitute/work well as a traditional Gimbal head. It is a bit pricey... but is lighter weight and, I assume, more compact than a traditional gimbal. Do you still use a traditional gimbal, or has this replaced it for you? Going on a big trip and looking for ways to reduce weight and space!
Let me put it this way. I have not touched any gimbal since my first FlexShooter arrived and I own 3 FlexShooter Heads now… 😆😉

I really enjoy you sharing your knowledge and experience. I was a bit surprised though about setting up feeding places and arranging pearches for your photos. Not saying it is wrong. Just want to know your thoughts on arranged photos of ”wildlife”. You see a lot of fantastic photos on Instagram and admire the photographers skills. I wonder how many of these photos are arranged. Does it matter?
In the end everyone has to decide what they’re comfortable with. To me it doesn’t matter really. Just because a bird comes and eats some seed or a banana doesn’t not make it wild imo. And to answer your question: probably almost all of them
Very instructive and interesting as usual but, All these available editing tools confuse me! Being a newbie which one should I start with ? Photoshop, Lightroom, Topaz, Dxo etc… I am starting to have a headache…
You need a RAW Converter and RAW Viewer, Lightroom can do both, so many use that. Most people also do most of the editing in Lightroom. Glenn and I prefer to do basic RAW editing in Lightroom or Camera RAW and then do most of the editing in Photoshops, but you don't necessarily need Photoshop if you just want to do basic editing.
DXO helps you to get rid of the noise, but you don't really need that or Topaz, you can right click on your RAW file and go to enhance to remove noise in Lightroom, too
so in other words, as a starting point, Lightroom could do most things for you, all in the one package

When I am shooting by myself, that's usually the most peaceful time for me. That's far more important to me than anyone else's style. Also, animals are far more aware of their surrounding then most humans give them credit for. Especially when baby birds are involved. I wouldn't be shocked if the Male bird Jan saw with his nemesis bird was actually aware of him and was checking in on babies which were not his own because of Jan's being in the vicinity.
I honestly believe far too many folks are becoming far too dependent on post processing software. Getting it right out of Camera is the greatest skill. Once one goes to the software side, we don't even know what's real or not. Which means this was a huge issue long before all the latest AI advancements. Nailing critical focus makes many of the things talked about a mute point. Many of the current cameras do a horrible job of assuring that. Be that because of the poor LCDs and or EVFs on far too many current cameras. Don't get me started on the poor manual focusing tools most cameras have.
The birds continued to feed right at my feet, but I am sure they knew I was there to a degree. We are rarely in a situation where the animals doesn’t know we’re there, hide or not
It’s actually quite common occurrence for other birds to check out babies and nest hollows

Hello Jan! Beautiful video! I wanted to ask you what would you do in my case. I am a beginer bird photographer in Greece and I want to improove my current gear (canon 10d, sigma 24-150). My budget is arround 200 euros (+ -150$). I have found in facebook marketplace a canon r10 with a short kit lens for 1050 euros and a canon r6 for 1200 euros. I dont know which one to buy because of the lens selection. I want at least 600mm. So if you read this please tell me which camera would you choose and with which lens would you combine the camera. Hi, Nick: I know you're waiting for an answer from Jan and Glenn, but I thought I'd weigh in. As an enthusiastic birder, I use an R7 with the RF100-500 for birding, and I'm thrilled by the results. The high resolution 32 MP APSC sensor works well with the L-series lens, and the extra reach from the crop sensor is ideal for birding in my opinion. But my friend uses an R10 with the RF 100-400, which also benefits from the extra reach of the crop sensor at a much more affordable price. To be honest, I don't see a huge difference between his shots and mine, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the "budget" option for birding. So while I like my R7, I might opt for the R10 to put the savings towards a new lens, for the extra reach that is so important for birding. I previously used the Sigma 150-600C, but the image quality with the Canon lenses is better, even with additional cropping to make up for the difference in maximum focal length. In my experience, a focal length of 400 mm on a crop sensor (640 mm effective field of view) works well for small birds and wildlife.

@@user-th7sv9xh1b For small birds, where reach matters, I think a crop sensor has definite advantages over full frame. When I bought my R7, I had to trade in my long telephotos, a Tamron 100-400 Di VC and Sigma 150-600C that were lovely birding lenses. When combined with a 20% off sale here in Canada last year, I managed to get the RF 100-500 at a very reasonable price. Personally, I think it's worth it if you can manage the price: It's lighter than both of the lenses it replaced, the dual focus motors are fast and accurate, and the image quality is spectacular. That said, my friend is using the RF 100-400 and the RF 600 mm F11 prime, and both are excellent budget lenses with good reviews among birders.
You are coming from a quite basic kit, so any of these cameras will feel like a monumental upgrade. I agree that you could also look for a used R7, which may be your best options. Your current cameras has a 1.6 crop. So you might feel like keeping that with an R10 or R7.

@@jan_wegener I am thinking about the sigma 150-600 but I look a Duades videos and a I notice a lot of af problems. So my only choices are the rf600 f11 and the rf100-400. The 600f11 has a very limited af area like my dslr. I dont know, I am very confused.

I despise that program...I think you need to embrace Adobe.
DPP is good for Raw conversion but it doesn’t go much beyond that.
I only use it for RAW conversion of my IR converted Canon camera because it's the only program that easily handles those files. Otherwise it's really clunky to use and limiting in many ways.

Hi. You guys mentioned asking other more experienced photographers to possibly go and have a shoot with them. Well there are photographers out there eg Flickr who play secret squirrel and purposely elect not to show their settings let alone take you out with them. It's so frustrating and I wonder why !!
I used to be a bit like that, but once you realise you can never lose by sharing your whole world will change and it’s a lot more fun to be out there. I guess it’s this sort of perceived “importance” or secrecy that causes a lot of competition in our field we love.
I hope I can contribute with this channel to help people see what’s needed to get nice photos

Be cautious on advice #2. I see a lot of people's relationships gone sour and they will accuse you of using them.
There's so much unhealthy competition in this space, it's sad.
A reason you almost never see what other photographers are actually doing in the field is that this is knowledge that is rarely given away for free. You either have to spend money on a workshop or purchase an ebook to have a look behind that curtain. And this is the game that photographers have to play in these times - if you want to make money in nature and wildlife, it doesn't come from selling or licensing the images themselves. It comes from selling the "how to" to other photographers. This isn't anything new either, it has been this way for decades. While I do not blame the photographers that make a living this way, it is still important to recognize the situation for what it is.
For sure...No way I could be a pro photographer without leading tours...
I used to be very closed up, I like to believe that I am fairly open these days and share a lot on this channel that can hopefully benefit others

The romantic legend of being a Mangelsen, a Wolf, or employed with the golden rectangle is long gone - but for many that haven't been around and have new eyes, it can be some cold water to wake up to. No, each of you have given plenty.
And there is a wide gradient among practitioners. On one end you have guys like Mike Lane, very generous and a true gentleman - and at the other end of the spectrum there are guys that coerce their participants to sign non-disclosure contracts before instruction. You guys are over on the Mike Lane curve of the graph.

I have a question about "feeling prepared" for reaching out to other photographers to learn from them. I noticed in your workshop photo you posted, everyone there was in full camo, had a massive lens, etc. I've been on a few workshops already and the main thing I keep hearing is, "we really need to get you some better gear Nick". This seems even more of an obstacle given the absolutely insane prices for even high quality used gear.
The thing we noticed in our meet ups with a few folks is that if you show up with an older DSLR and a Sigma 150-600 (because that's all you can afford), you're not really taken seriously. There was a clear "great whites" faction, and a "budget lens" faction in the classes/meetups. The experts try and humour you, and help where they can, but the reality is, quality bird photography is a hobby for those who can afford it, or professionals who invest.
What would your advice be for those on the outside of this "insider club" of camera gear? I know we all say "anyone can get into wildlife photography", but the truth of the matter is that there is a lot of income inequality in this world and very few can actually afford camera gear, let alone high end gear.
You make some good points... But to be honest I feel like you can get great work done with modest equipment... Many of the images on my website are with cameras like the 20d,40d, and 7d. And while it's nice to have a super telephoto lens I started with a 300mm f/4.
So shoot with what you have and look for appropriate subjects... And most of all have fun! 😊

That's an $1800 lens even today. Used, probably around $1000 with shipping and in good condition.
I'm shooting with a $600 used Sigma over here that can on a good day do f/7.1.
I think you and I have very different concepts of "affordable" and "starter". Which is the vibe I got speaking with the folks in my workshops who couldn't budget even the 300mm you're talking about.
I do appreciate you saying "shoot with what you have" though, that's definitely my philosophy as well.
I think the main issue is this strange and unhealthy competition in our field and many people kind of identify themselves through their gear. Kind of like driving a fancy car. Nothing wrong with that, but it becomes a bit irritating when you’re being looked down upon.
Now some may be meant to be advise, because to a degree better gear will help you or course, but at the same time it shouldn’t make you feel uncomfortable.
Otoh I think you should also not feel bad about whichever gear you have. Just enjoy it.
So I guess the only advise I have would be to find like minded people. The issue with many camera clubs will be that certain people will like to show off.

@@GlennBartley I actually feel pretty stupid now. I have been working as a wildlife tour guide in Yellowstone for years immersed in this whole wildlife photography culture.
Unfortunately, I never had a top level super secret insider to explain to me the more advanced techniques like feeding the animals.
Sorry, to break this to you, buddy, but there are actually backward people out there still producing incredible wildlife photos, even incredible bird photos without baiting their subjects.
Flying a bunch of people down to Columbia for backyard bird photography is pretty cool too though.
I guess the views on feeding or what's wild will always differ. To me any animal not in a cage that can go where it wants is wild. Ultimately everyone has to decide for themselves what they like or don't like.
After all, many animals in US National Parks are also very used to human presence allowing a close approach. Maybe not from feeding, but high traffic, however, the end result is somewhat similar.
In the end, we all like to get close to our subjects one way or another. And if feeding some hummingbirds will allow people to experience amazing nature in another country, I don't think it's a bad thing.
Eco tourism in these countries can help a lot of people and also help to protect the habitat.
