I'm glad you mentioned that Demi Moore was actually very good in many of the films she was in. I've been saying the same thing. This is BY FAR a career best performance for her and the studio needs to push this come awards time. It's all done without dialogue but you can feel every ounce of her self hatred and it is arguably the most powerful sequence in the film. As I mentioned to others, Demi Moore lays it all out on the table in the film, not just physically but emotionally as well. As good as Qualley (who is on a HUGE roll right now) and Quaid (who would make excited if he got a Supporting Actor nod for his insanely and perfectly calibrated performance) are, Moore is the center of the movie and the way she holds down each of her scenes is what allows the movie to not go too far over the top.

Male reviewers miss the point of double standards of the expectation that women remain perfect for men. Aging male stars get more roles and do not have the pressure to stay young as women are.
And that is one of the points the movie makes very well. Men, who are nowhere near as attractive as the women they're judging, evaluate the women SIMPLY on their appearance. I loved the movie. Not because of the body horror, which itself references several previous works: from Tool's Adam Jones in Stinkfist, Chris Cunningham's Rubber Johnny, Cronnenberg's The Fly and even David Lynch's elephant man, but in reverse. As if they had all been given to Gaspar Noe to assemble a version of Oscar Wilde's Portrait of Dorian Grey. A note about the ending that I was telling my girlfriend: In an interview they did with Eddie Vedder while making Vs. or Vitalogy, he commented on how overwhelmed he was with the response to the first album in practical experiences, how the corduroy jacket he wears on the unplugged had been marketed by some fashion label for an exorbitant price and how the fame that Mtv and the record industry was exploiting the hell out of them had made him a product that all audiences wanted to have a piece of. Stolen personal items, the sad stories of Cobain, Staley, Hoon, Wood and more such misfortunes. He said: There comes a time when you think that if you were to rip off your arm and throw it to the audience, they would rejoice in the blood and be overly grateful. The ending is the same message, but within the beautiful nightmare that is The Substance.
After seeing the movie, I don't believe they share a consciousness that you mention at 2:19. I think the younger version has the consciousness of her younger self. Otherwise, how were they both conscious for the fight scene? I think it's a stretch to think that one consciousness can be in 2 separate bodies at once and want to fight each other.
Exactly! It’s not just that. There are other obvious tells they live seperate lives. Sue is surprised the house is trashed with food everywhere. It makes 0 sense to even start treatment if the old version is blanked out for 7 days. After sue inflicted damage to the index finger it’s like she was unaware of it and continues to abuse the body for 3 months. Really bad writing. I think most of this film is supposed to setup the final act
I felt the exact same way. I had an open mind going in because of everything I'd read and watched about it. This film is like nothing I have ever seen. Wouldn't call it horror, wouldn't call it psycho drama. It's in its own category. Nice to see ART again in film.
The best body horror movie since David Cronenberg is Titane, even Possessor. The plot sounds quite similar to Infinity Pool. Glad to see Demi Mooore back this looks promising. Let's hope the hype delivers.
I need to see Antiviral. Possessor is a classic, though. And I'm upset that there is talk of Hollywood remaking it. Some classics should be left alone.
How does the plot sound like infinity pool. A couple away on holiday in a locked off tourist resort in a dodgy country where peoples clones are murdered in place of them? How?
IMO, this movie has some great parts at the beginning, but the last quarter is pretty dumb. All of the super tense sections had the whole theater laughing out loud. It wasn't scary at all.
I can't picture people laughing at that in a theater. I'm still shook by the makeup and prosthetics days later. Many have walked out at the 20-30 min mark in theaters. Probably the moment Qualley comes out
They do not share a consciousness. Evidenced by how neither knows what the other has been doing. Like how Sue is stunned and repulsed at seeing all the dishes everywhere when she wakes up. She had no idea Elisabeth was sitting around stuffing her face. If they did share a consciousness, there'd be no conflict. Because Elisabeth would have all the memories of being loved and adored as sue. It's a similar version as Severance.
Just saw this film today and it easily made my top 3 of the year so far. I absolutely loved Fargeats approach and certain shot compositions make it a horrifically trippy film to digest (among other aspects lol). I’d highly recommend The Substance to anyone with a mild interest. You will not be disappointed!
Here’s an equation for you people: David Cronenberg style direction + Demi Moore reflecting on her 90s career × a theme about the abuse of performance/psychoactive drugs + a vibe like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde × the climax of Akira^Perfect Blue = ? No seriously, I’m asking….
I went and watched this yesterday. You know what the most disturbing part about this movie is it’s a mix of altered states natural bond killers carry, and death becomes her. It was absolutely obvious if you had seen all those movies there’s zero question about it
Ugh🤫🤔🙈Amazing, so many people are shocked by this movie.....Just, look at who the director is. Vivid & graphic imagery is expected. Lots, of things to unpack & bullet points to note. ▪︎Revenge 2018, good prerequisite for going into this one. It's easy, to compare revenge to ISOYG I spit on your grave. But, revenge is also like Royal hotel with Jessica henwick. ▪︎Now, let's talk the substance. ▪︎Neon demon meets nocturnal animals meets Nicolas winding refn meets Yorgos lanthimos. ▪︎All, the cronenberg-esq omage to fly, elephant man are fine. But, ▪︎How, about black swan & Demi moore is alot like Winona ryder's character. ▪︎Demi, also chanelled her inner Jake gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler, smashing the mirror. ▪︎Ironic, Qualley's own mother Andie could give the sparkle character run for it's money. ▪︎Wasn't, Andie macdowell's famous tagline for L'oreal - Gray hair ? Not, that I had any ! ▪︎Something tells me, director fargeat insisted on acquiring qualley for this role. Regardless, of enhancements or prosthetics. ▪︎Ray liotta, was suppose to be Harvey. But, Dennis quaid filled in nicely. Another, vile & disgusting man that could've play this character is Vince k mcmahon, lol. ▪︎Director, is amazing at portraying the vile & disgusting nature of man. Eating, indulging, slobbering are depicted vividly in all her movies🎬.
This has been a great year for horror. Alien: Romulus, MaXXXine, Abigail, The First Omen, Longlegs, The Coffee Table (good, but I NEVER want to watch again), Late Night With The Devil, Cuckoo, Oddity. 2024 just keeps rolling out good horror movies. I definitely want to see this movie, as well as Strange Darlings.
Oh, dear God, THE COFFEE TABLE...never, never again...by a long shot the most suspenseful, gut wrenching movie in years but not a second watch. What a mean genius piece of horrible filmmaking
"humane" was good too. Definitely belongs to my 2024 favs. "first omen" & "Abigail' are at the top for me. And I'm looking forward to see Hugh Grant as a villain in "the heretic"😂
Movie is well made and intense, but the premise does not make any sense. When the original self and the other self are two separate entities, the original self would not be able to experience the youth and fame that the other self is basking in. Hence, in this case, there is no incentive whatsoever for the original self to spawn the other self.
Before I knew anything substantial about the plot of this film, I truly thought it was going to be another retelling of the classic Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.
Why is no one pointing out how Substance mirrors Requiem for a Dream? The visuals and themes of addiction and breakdown seem like a clear reference, must have been an influence for the director!
Did they share a consciousness? I didn't get that message from the movie. That would make more sense, but they really didn't make it clear at all in the movie. I actually question that. Because after the young girl had drained all of Demi's life and she ended up as that grotesque thing, When she woke up, we heard Demi scream, like she was shocked at what the young girl had done to her...... So I question if they were sharing a consciousness... Why would she be shocked?....
Agree. Everyone's banging on about terrifyer3 being disturbing.. I found it funny But ho-lee-shit was this uncomfortable! Hallelujah Berry's catwoman mixed with The Fly, The Elephant-Man, and a hint of Carrey lmao
Let’s face it; the Hollywood industry has changed but also remains the same in many ways particularly when it comes to women The standard for beauty is raised very high and it’s hard for actresses 50 and over to be taken seriously let alone remain fresh and desirable for audiences The movie is visually splendid taking many inspirations from ‘The Shining’, ‘The Fly’ even ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ A lot of visual motifs that get the idea of gross executives wanting young and fresh faces along with extreme closeups although they could scale back a bit on the wide angle lenses It's amazing Demi Moore is in her 60s and this is actually a reflection of her actual aging vagaries in the industry; being in the 1990s her physique and beauty was the craze yet she gives probably the best performance of her career She's put through the ringer so much from a lot of prosthetics and grisly makeup effects They did a great job with Margaret Qualley making her look like the younger version of Moore's character, she's very believable giving a convincing portrayal of a youthful woman who wants to hold onto the spotlight as long as possible Denis Quaid plays the perfect amount of slimy, he literally chews up the scenery projecting the dirtbags in the modeling world I was unprepared for how much nudity was in this but man they don't shy away from showing the body horror portions, at times it pays a lot of respect to David Cronenberg and HP Lovecraft to even The Elephant Man Especially the climax where it gets so violent and insane It gets very unnerving when both of these women are fighting each other for dominance and the movie could've shaved off 20 minutes near the end Yet the film by Coralie Fargeat takes quite a jab at the male gaze, Hollywood's preoccupation with youth, the inevitability of aging, not being washed up, self-hatred, and the lengths women will go through to stay perfect even for selfish reasons It'll be very controversial for many viewers but talked about regardless being it dissects the notions of beauty and fame while also acting as feminist body horror satirizing staying young with obsession becoming true terror itself Fargeat makes a satirical take on misogyny, beauty standards, celebrity status, and the culture of youth But she also combines many of these elements with pure body horror like a twisted ‘Nutty Professor’ Truly not for the squeamish yet very relevant in today’s pop cultural landscape of entertainment
"Suitable Flesh" by Cronenberg Jr. is a fine film as well. Hollywood is now mirroring the psyche of the (has been) stars. "Flesh" has the Roller Girl as the, well, meat turning rotten. Yup, and I ain't apologizing for shit.

This sounds like a twist on Death Becomes Her
Crossed with "The Fly."
Can’t WAIT to see this 💯🤩
Dennis is starting to resemble a cartoon villain
He is awesome!
I think they deliberately set him up to be a caricature of Harvey Weinstein and his ilk.
I felt the exact same way. I had an open mind going in because of everything I'd read and watched about it. This film is like nothing I have ever seen. Wouldn't call it horror, wouldn't call it psycho drama. It's in its own category. Nice to see ART again in film.
Margaret Qualley has good genes and shows she is a very good actress.
The best body horror movie since David Cronenberg is Titane, even Possessor. The plot sounds quite similar to Infinity Pool. Glad to see Demi Mooore back this looks promising. Let's hope the hype delivers.
Antiviral was great too, better than Possessor imo
I need to see Antiviral. Possessor is a classic, though. And I'm upset that there is talk of Hollywood remaking it. Some classics should be left alone.
How does the plot sound like infinity pool. A couple away on holiday in a locked off tourist resort in a dodgy country where peoples clones are murdered in place of them? How?
no one mention the music and sound effect of this movie! I think it's very underrated!
The fly easter egg was a nice touch too
I love Demi Moore when I was young people used to say I resembled her , that was back in the 90s 😊
" Mall Rats" is my favorite. I still can't see that 3D picture. 🤣
I'm also seeing some Dead Ringers in here.
Probably the moment Qualley comes out
@dylankurtz8423 When she was going crazy with the food, it was hilarious 😂 😃
@@itssecret.722 hell ya
Demi is perfect in this movie, i think she deserves an oscar.
Its great. A real wtf movie
Here’s an equation for you people:
David Cronenberg style direction + Demi Moore reflecting on her 90s career × a theme about the abuse of performance/psychoactive drugs + a vibe like Dr.
But,
▪︎How, about black swan & Demi moore is alot like Winona ryder's character.
Coffee table ? I seen that movie like 2 years ago
"humane" was good too. Definitely belongs to my 2024 favs. "first omen" & "Abigail' are at the top for me.
And I'm looking forward to see Hugh Grant as a villain in
"the heretic"😂
Long legs is one of the worst movies evet wtf lol

Opinions vary?
I will check this out! Good to see Demi in movies again.
AMAZING,this drops itself into anyone’s disturbing movies list, without question
Hyde.
Nice! Dennis Quaid in two movies where he plays disgusting men this year.
This is just Lookism (Korean Webtoon) with some bells and whistles.
I just saw it tonight, it was wild! I’m so glad I saw the trailer for it 💚
Why is no one pointing out how Substance mirrors Requiem for a Dream? The visuals and themes of addiction and breakdown seem like a clear reference, must have been an influence for the director!
Margaret Qualley was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Did they share a consciousness? I didn't get that message from the movie. That would make more sense, but they really didn't make it clear at all in the movie. I actually question that. Because after the young girl had drained all of Demi's life and she ended up as that grotesque thing, When she woke up, we heard Demi scream, like she was shocked at what the young girl had done to her...... So I question if they were sharing a consciousness... Why would she be shocked?....
Agree.
Everyone's banging on about terrifyer3 being disturbing.. I found it funny
But ho-lee-shit was this uncomfortable!
Hallelujah Berry's catwoman mixed with The Fly, The Elephant-Man, and a hint of Carrey lmao
Two people tapped out in my showing and left early … wild engaging horrific amusing. 7.5/10 and recommended.
Fantastic movie. Anybody noticed the many nods to Kubrick?
this seriously was the craziest horror movie. Considering alot since terrifier 3 just came out.
Let’s face it; the Hollywood industry has changed but also remains the same in many ways particularly when it comes to women
The standard for beauty is raised very high and it’s hard for actresses 50 and over to be taken seriously let alone remain fresh and desirable for audiences
The movie is visually splendid taking many inspirations from ‘The Shining’, ‘The Fly’ even ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’
A lot of visual motifs that get the idea of gross executives wanting young and fresh faces along with extreme closeups although they could scale back a bit on the wide angle lenses It's amazing Demi Moore is in her 60s and this is actually a reflection of her actual aging vagaries in the industry; being in the 1990s her physique and beauty was the craze yet she gives probably the best performance of her career
She's put through the ringer so much from a lot of prosthetics and grisly makeup effects
They did a great job with Margaret Qualley making her look like the younger version of Moore's character, she's very believable giving a convincing portrayal of a youthful woman who wants to hold onto the spotlight as long as possible
Denis Quaid plays the perfect amount of slimy, he literally chews up the scenery projecting the dirtbags in the modeling world
I was unprepared for how much nudity was in this but man they don't shy away from showing the body horror portions, at times it pays a lot of respect to David Cronenberg and HP Lovecraft to even The Elephant Man
Especially the climax where it gets so violent and insane
It gets very unnerving when both of these women are fighting each other for dominance and the movie could've shaved off 20 minutes near the end
Yet the film by Coralie Fargeat takes quite a jab at the male gaze, Hollywood's preoccupation with youth, the inevitability of aging, not being washed up, self-hatred, and the lengths women will go through to stay perfect even for selfish reasons
It'll be very controversial for many viewers but talked about regardless being it dissects the notions of beauty and fame while also acting as feminist body horror satirizing staying young with obsession becoming true terror itself
Fargeat makes a satirical take on misogyny, beauty standards, celebrity status, and the culture of youth
But she also combines many of these elements with pure body horror like a twisted ‘Nutty Professor’
Truly not for the squeamish yet very relevant in today’s pop cultural landscape of entertainment
Watched it tonight at a scream unseen at odeon, really enjoyed it definitely must watch movie
"Suitable Flesh" by Cronenberg Jr. is a fine film as well. Hollywood is now mirroring the psyche of the (has been) stars. "Flesh" has the Roller Girl as the, well, meat turning rotten. Yup, and I ain't apologizing for shit.
Just watch it. Movie of the year. Masterpiece.
Will have a Criterion edition on 4K in a year or less. Guarantee it
Can we talk about the YELLOW COAT!!!???!!!!!!!!!!
I love it. It's really stylish.
Revenge was surprisingly good.
Man you me SUPER-curious....I quite loved Revenge and that movie in itself had pretty excessive gore. Is this even bloodier than that movie??
Even bloodier and then some..This movie is batshit bonkers! Loved it. TIFF Midnight Madness!
0:59 chew...haha 😅
I hope Demi Moore is in more movies, she was a great actress that could actually act& Margaret qu alley….wow, she’s a honey
I’m so proud of Demi❤She rocks!!
9 out of 10????? OK YOU CONTINUE making freaking TH-cam videos
Shit was wild
Death becomes her made into a horror….
