Tell Fish and game to stuff it!!! Let me understand there thinking, you shouldn't feed deer they say because its bad for them but its ok to shoot as many as you pay to shoot. Our environment and the animal's in it are and have been in horrible shape ever since we allowed a department in the government to over see both. 😶

What you need to understand is the relationship between deer population and their food sources. I'm sure you've seen those graphs of the oscillating populations of lynx and rabbits. When the population of lynx goes up that reduces the population of rabbits which in turn leads to starvation for the lynx, which in turn increases the population of rabbits, and so on and so forth. The key thing to understand is that deer's natural predators almost never catch a healthy deer over 30 days old. The main cause of natural mortality for deer is winter starvation. That's right, the population dynamics of deer are much more like that of predators than that of prey. When deer populations rise they destroy their own food sources which in turn leads to winter starvation, then those species of plant that are preferred food sources for deer can rebound and you get the same cycle over time. Interrupting that cycle has disastrous effects on the native plant life.

@@ThirdLawPair I do understand there are circumstances where your explanation is valid, but we are talking about a farming area. Here's an example, I've grown up on an 800 acre farm with half the land forest . My father never allowed hunting and we have no natural Deer predators, in my 50 years I've never once come across dead deer (ever) . I've traveled every part if this land and there's a very healthy animal population.

    • @AsmodeusDHare

except the reasons above, spreading disease more easily, attracting predators that might see humans as a dessert, causing an imbalance of prey vs predators where if you stopped feeding them for a while they'd start clearcutting vegitation (Think Rabbit Island in Japan) and not all prey are gentle either so if they see humans as a source of food some bucks will bully the human to bring more food.
But then we go back to the fact it's an island and the ecosystem is smaller. So with care this is fine.

Feeding isn't inherently bad, and can actually be good sometimes, but its a spectrum. If you're feeding them so much food that it actually attracts them to your yard, like that lady was doing, its really bad.
There's a deer that'll graze near my house and I'll give it an apple or two sometimes, but thats once a month at most and she's far more focused on wild plants. Thats an acceptable amount for example.

Hi , I have been told that the feed like XCEL ,that you buy, is for farm animals and not good for deer, is there something different in the feed that you buy that makes it good for deer??
However, another more likely concern that often goes unknown to the person supplying the feed is called acidosis. Acidosis occurs when ruminants (deer) consume large quantities of carbohydrates that are low in fiber, also known as corn toxicity. A deer’s diet during the winter consists of high fiber woody browse, not low fiber carbohydrates. With a sudden intake of grain, an increase and change in the microbial population in the rumen causes a fatal increase of lactic acid. Dehydration as a result of the buildup of lactic acid can be fatal

I have treated their injuries and got them through illnesses. I don't encourage attempts to domesticate the black tails but by limiting their need to migrate the spread of viruses can be curtailed. It is similar to social distancing with humans.

When you feed wild animals, especially large ones, you endanger them and other humans by making them more comfortable to be in areas where humans live.
    - They can be hit by cars or attacked by pets
    - Can injure pets and humans that arent used to being around larger animals than themselves so more than likely will unintentionally startle or provoke them.
    - Can attract their natural predators to that area, making it even more dangerous.
If you want to help deer, help them by creating and preserving their NATURAL habitats and provide a *self-replenishing* source of food by cultivating the plants they naturally feed on in the wild and planting them there
People dont care and think "it's harmless" until someone or something gets hurt 😐

I've walked with whitetails for 20 years, I don't feed my buddies, but we do eat together.. gathering edible wild greens, blackberry picking, I eat berries, they eat the foliage+viginia creeper&wild grape.. we like blueberry & elderberry, APPLES!!😋

To have taught deer I know how to safely cross streets, (like kids with a crossing gaurd, calmly observe traffic flow&cross when clear) cross BEHIND the vehicle that stops for you..the older ones will aggressively stop traffic like a crossing gaurd, they have experienced the behavior of humans, tied to what I taught them, they get street smarter as they get experience. Ya never know who's spying from the woodlot as the humans scamper to their day..then about 930-10 am when kids are to school & folks to work, the deer come out into the quiet&shady back yards, like cats!🥰
They are so expressive, and to be considered "family" by them, welcomed into that tight bond, is amazing..
So often we walk past nature, not alongside. To walk together, to see alarmed deer alert you, come bounding back to you, not the usual experience! To see them loop around, having disappeared from the threat's view, spy on the threat, LEARN..🤔🤯🥰 .. THEY LEARN THE HOOD!🤣👍

As for physical condition, physical mobility doesn't necessarily deny you access to SEEING them.. slowing down actually helps. Finding evidence of their presence & patiently looking during quiet times where they feel comfortable @ certain parts of the day, one can discover them as everyone else is @ work/school,watching evening news, etc.. they slink like cats in the quiet moments, just behind us..THEY DODGE US PER OUR REGULAR SCHEDULES!😉🦌
To not greet them like paparazzi, but respectfully acknowledge them, then go back to your previous focus helps. They communicate by eyes so much, "locking on" is a predatory expression, an unwanted attention..imagine a guy being respectfully a gentleman rather than being pushy/"handsy" ..deer will feel you, too much enthusiasm while they are "working" is a distraction..trick is to have a low profile like them, & not following the regular schedule of people helps..
Once you "see" how they live, then you will find each other, you will be more attuned to seeing ears in the shadows, movement in the shade..little things you feel like someone watching you, its neat because they have poor vision, but can see slightest movements well, they'd be legally blind if given a vision test!(*why THEY hit cars)
I've found deer many times by walking past & looking back, or by simply sitting peacefully OFF of a trail..we are typically too hurried for them!

If they're on a island the deer will eventually forage out all the food, then what? They'll either try to swim away to find food or drown trying. That would be a negative effect.

the general population of deer will not rely on her feeding them, only the ones are in or around her property, and like when the food is gone they will be gone too, the wildlife officers will use this very same trick if they needed to add any kind of complement in their diet or any kind of neutering product, they should not be that surprised. nothing wrong with feeding them on your property.

Feed them ! They may get tuberculosis , or other diseases you may do what you want , we live in a world full of rules , not all is perfect. Just know there’s a reason for them , when any wild animal gets used to humans this he can change an ecosystem ! I’m sure deer season is productive there too . 🇺🇸

They're not earth by themselves, so why on earth can you, the HUMAN, "not be relied upon"? ( Nonsense!). That's why we're on earth with other beings that need our help. Jeez.

Its about time we started taking care of the wild animals. WE OWE THEM at least that. For hundreds of years we've been pushing them around. Leaving them homeless, motherless, killing there babies. Good job. You keep it up. These humans who say its illegal ? Don't have a soul. Demons. I feed everything that crosses my path. To me its normal. You hungry? Ok BRB with food or come on in. Never refuse any spices that are hungry. Anyway good job very glad to see this. I can't say enough , I'd be here all day. Lol.

All over the US we feed the deer, and we don't plan to stop. Deer have loss of habit and have the horrid fear of hunters, so the widelife official want to cause trouble because of the hunters, hunters hate it that people see dear in a loving way.

We want deer to be afraid of hunters, and they should be eating what's natural to their diet- not food that's designed for farm animals.
Likewise, we don't need hunters to 'control population'. Nature will do that on its own.
