LOVED his comedic roles! However, I will always remember him as one of the villains that "Harmonica," played by a young Charles Bronson, gunned down in the opening scene of one of the greatest Westerns of all time, "Once Upon A Time In The West!" The film featured a stellar Cast. Along with Elam and Bronson, the actors included Henry Fonda, the stunningly beautiful Claudia Cardinale and Jason Robards! If you haven't seen it...DO! It's a MUST SEE Classic Western!! Trust me. You will watch it again and again. The opening scene is one absolutely incredible joyride. From humor (Thanks, Jack Elam!), to an eerie harmonica lead in the Soundtrack revealing the sudden appearance of Charles Bronson, to the inevitable shootout at the railroad station. It is about a 9-minute movie opening that will grab you from the start and not let you go until the mystery of Bronson's "Harmonica" character is revealed in the final climactic gunfight with badman Henry Fonda. The eerie harmonica-led musical Soundtrack will forever haunt you! Trust me!

Agreed! One of my all time favorites, I return to watch it a couple of times every year since it's release and it always feels like the first time even if I know it inside out. It is absolutely gorgeous, glorious, heartbreakingly beautiful film with a timeless story, characters, music etc. I know and love Jack Elam because of this.

My great-grandmother knew Jack Elam when he was a boy in her Sunday school at church. Seeing that Jack Elam was born in 1920, a rough guess would place that around 95 years ago if he was ten years of age at the time.
My favorite scene of his acting career was in Sergio Leone's Once Upon a time in The West, where he doesn't say a word, but eventually traps a pesky housefly crawling on his face with a pistol's barrel against a bench. Sergio Leone was famous for his closeups of actor's faces, and Jack Elam's face alone was a sweaty and grimy masterpiece.

My fondest memories of Jack Elam are when he co-starred with James Garner and Joan Hackett in Support Your Local Sheriff! 0:33 This poor guy, his childhood must have consisted of nothing but climbing big piles of dirt for no reason... Miami & Globe are shit towns with absolutely nothing in them except gas stations for the people luckily enough to just be passing through.

I liked him in The Sacketts. Not a big role but larger than life as a pissed off brother...
    Great actor!

3:50 are dead babies known to be proficient dancers? If this is true why isn't s.i.d.s. funnier? "I'm not sure how to say this Mr. & Mr.s Brown, we found your baby throwing shapes and cutting a rug, at fiirst we thought it might be having a seizure until we witnessed the corpse doing the running man...we are so sorry for your loss... would you like a copy of its routine?
