As I was walkin' 'round Grosvenor Square
Not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air,
From the other direction, she was calling my eye,
It could be an illusion, but I might as well try, might as well try.
She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes.
And I knew without askin' she was into the blues.
She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls,
I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls.
In the thick of the evening when the dealing got rough,
She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff.
As I picked up my matches and was closing the door,
I had one of those flashes I'd been there before, been there before.
Well, I ain't often right but I've never been wrong.
Seldom turns out the way it does in a song.
Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right.
Well there ain't nothing wrong with the way she moves,
Scarlet begonias or a touch of the blues.
And there's nothing wrong with the look that's in her eyes,
I had to learn the hard way to let her pass by, let her pass by
The wind in the willow's playin' "Tea for Two";
The sky was yellow and the sun was blue,
Strangers stoppin' strangers just to shake their hand,
Everybody's playin' in the heart of gold band, heart of gold band.
The older I get, the more I understand and appreciate the Dead.
Truth!!
ditto, when i was a young un, would occasionally hangout out with deadheads. we'd do weekends, never really into the shrooms and wine, lol. but the aura, atmosphere was just total love and peace.
So true, when I was living a more free life, loved the Dead because of the vibe, now that I’m in my old lady, mama phase of life, it’s still the vibe but more like beautiful spirit of life vibe (vs chilling and such ha)
Better than the Living-!!
I never got it, I tried hard for years. I never got it until about 6 months ago. Magical
“Strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand” what a world to strive for
We do this every day in Brasil

A lot of people are saying they are in the wrong generation, I think their wrong, i think they are here to make this generation just as awesome as the previous one
Josh Mears I love that outlook! 😊 I’m certainly guilty of saying I was born in the wrong generation tho.
Your awsome
They’re 🤣 jk but yeah you’re totally right
a heavy burden
Well spoken my friend. Im only 19 but I've been listening to the Grateful Dead religiously for 8 years now.
I'm 63. Haven't heard this song in 30+ years. Still as great as ever. God I miss those days. Giant smile on my face. Peace to all.

Ok
In Paris, 1995,what an amazing time
We were probably within eyesight of one another at at least one of the concerts in this era - Fillmore West, Winterland. Kezar Stadium, Keystone Corners. 'Those were the days, yes they were'.
"Once in a while you get shown the Light, in the strangest of places, if you look at it right" wow, what wise words!
...and you know that notion just crossed my mind RIP Jerry
Seldom turns out the way it does in a song.
my sister bought me a zippo lighter with that engraved..was stolen..
@@chuckrowland8362 Just really sweet when it actually does turn out the way it does in a song.
@@chuckrowland8362 Some explaining. I used to be a deadhead but I walked away from it all some thirty-some years ago because I was a little puss and I didn't want to get high anymore. I had always thought that my life had been so tragic. I don't even listen to the Grateful Dead hardly at all anymore so you wouldn't even know the artist let alone the song that I am thinking of so I won't even mention it. Not only that but it's all in a foreign language. So it was one day that I was watching the video for this song on you-tube. I thought it was a nice song blah, blah, blah. But then it suddenly occurred to me that the song was telling a story that was something that happened to me right about the time I quit the Grateful Dead. That was the point at which I got "one of those flashes." It brought me all the way back to that time that the song seemed to be talking about. And it just so happens that I was listening to Scarlet Begonias over and over at that particular time. But the foreign language song is a comedy rather than a tragedy so consequently I was compelled to rethink my own past. For although my life has been mediocre and average it has been by no means a tragedy if you can go by what the foreign language song is saying. Now this is not to suggest that the foreign language song is actually about me, because that would just be vanity. But it is close enough to what happened to cause me to know that "I'd been there before" so to speak.
My daddy sung this to me when I was a baby to put me to sleep. Im eleven and still remember. I love him.
how sweet :)
I think I love him too!
Happy childhood . Continue in the same way .
When you remember and love your daddy for a brief instant the entirety of reality loves *you* .
When I was in the hospital to have a tonsilectomy I missed my dog so much I could hardly bear it. My father got a piece of paper and drew me a portrait of my dog which captured her very essence. I still have that scrap of paper but even if it's destroyed it will never ever really be destroyed---nor the love which spawned it.
I'm 62 unless the Dead are playing. Then I am forever 17
I love this ❤️

This was without a doubt posted by a really proud father
Hey, that's TOTALLY COOL 😎😎
You're 1 LUCKY KID!!!
this is honestly one of the most uniquely American pieces of music I've ever heard.
My 2 year old granddaughter Scarlet has been nicknamed Begonia. I think this name is gonna stick. Nothing wrong with being named after a wonderful piece of music.
Yeah, but being named after what happens when blood rushes through a syringe of heroin is.
@@bigoldingus6491 ????
That's stupid
I guess having a nickname like begonia is better than having a nickname like blumpkin.
Please her heart.
My kitty passes away this morning from health complications, this song is really helping heal my soul. He was like a child to me and my wife considering we are unable to have children of our own. God works in the most odd ball ways. Never lose faith in love and even in the darkest times stay humble. You never know what the next man, woman, or child is going through. Be at peace and love one another. This world is wicked but even the smallest candle will banish darkness.

I'm sorry brother,

Man do I miss those summer shows, JFK in Philly, dancing in the sweet summer night air... 65000 in the show, 150000 more in the parking lot! Sigh those days are long gone...

"Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right." Used this as my senior quote of the year. I love this song so much.
Sweet
This simply amazing USA homegrown music
We are all here for a reason!!! And grateful Dead is the reason lol
I didn't learn to love the Dead until I was 30. So many years wasted. (🥴)
One day I'll drive across the Golden gate with this on the radio. One day.
There's no toll when you're leaving the City, only when you come in
I rode my skateboard
How about 2 days?? Or 3 days??? Or even 4????
I walked across the golden gate bridge leaving San fran Phycho. Unfortunately due to liberal policies. The Haight is filled with gang members controlling the flow of drugs, not the hippies. And on the Haight it is dirty, needles, poop everywhere, and don't even get me started on the tenderloin. Last time I went to SF, years ago. Since then it's probably only gotten worse.
In California there are two choices. Be rich AS (making over $100,000) or a bum/living on disability
Me too.
"Once in a while you get shown the light In the strangest of places if you look at it right." still sends a chill down my spine, even after all these years.
this is what kids need to be listening to

Love Sublime (really do) but their version sucks imo
Nobody in this day and age, 2024 can even come close or even compete with these musicians, they play so well, and play with heart and soul.
I was blessed to see The Dead play 5 times in The Bay Area, California, in my youth. RIP Jerry Garcia..You be forever missed ❤️
Why does this bring tears to my eyes? Very few artists make me feel this way the Dead among them! Just pure awesomeness
Timeless. I was a 90s 2000s kid. In my 30s now and as cool as it must have been to “be there” I’m just happy to play this song in my backyard with the sun shining.
As much as the media, music or films from that era may have glorified those times, they were really hell in America, very turbulent. Particularly the 1960s, I guess the 70s were more chill but the Vietnam War didn't end until 1975. It was a generally terrible time to be a woman around then as well. My mother was born in 57' and was frequently harassed at every job and had several times where she was nearly raped and somehow managed to get away. Rose tinted spectacles be real.
Exactly, precisely, identically , like now.@@Valientlink

Now at 71 I find myself becoming a DEADHEAD !!!
GD are so smooth, and fitting, man they just fill up your soul with goodness. Love this shit.
You can't beat the grateful dead! Jerry's voice is simply heavenly!
Born singer
As much as I like early dead never really like his voice
One of my favorite songs by the Dead! ❤😊✌️
me and my dad used to listen to this song together when i was little, he passed in 2015 and it hurts more each day i would do anything to be able to blast this song on his speakers and sing this with him again while talking about how much he liked grateful dead.
Blast it on your speakers and dance with flowers in hear and bells on your shoes. He'll be there with you.
Such a great mellow tune. Jerry's guitar solo puts you in another world!
My favorite Dead song!! The rhythm and the way Jerry uplifts the end of the line with his voice. “Ain’t nothing wrong with the way she moves”...love it!!!
My little niece was named after this song! Can't help but to think of her. That little Scarlett is something special I'm telling you💜
I remember the night before the show. We were camping with everyone. It was a family experience on
Then some guy showed up and said he was going to buy a Bible
As a younger guy I loved the Sublime version of this song. Boy was I blind. What Jerry Garcia does when he is "on" simply cannot be replicated. His voice and guitar create melody musicians wish they could rival.
This is the video that started my obsession with the Dead 5 years ago. The first time I listened it hadn't sounded quite what I assumed the band of the counterculture would, but it caught my interest. I moved from this to studio albums, then fast forward a year and I'm listening to live shows back-to-back and reading a book about their cultural and music impact.

With the huge glasses and arm-length wristband! Phil wails!
Yep....for sure Phil is hitting those syncopated spaces with the lo-freq just right. And Garcia is pretty darned awesome here too...it was just so sad to see a musician of his calibre deteriorate from the drugs and overwork in later life. +David Havard Not Fade Away
Tales of their demise are greatly exaggerated.
they don't make em like they used to .It brings tears to my eyes .
Ain't been nothin like 'em before or since. A pure joy for listening both lyrics and music. Loose we called it in the 60's. Kinda like it just naturally flowed out of 'em. Certainly not the best musicians or singers but still just magical if you were or are able to tap into it. Not everyone can you know (smile). I guess like many things it just ain't for everyone. But if you're one "you" know what I mean. The Grateful Dead. Just ain't nothin like 'em before or since (smile). Oh I know they still make appearances but sad to say Jerry's gone, Jerry's gone RIP. Yes, the peace that passeth all understanding. That home we're all or should I say most are seeking. So like Dr Laura says, now go out and do the right thing (smile). There are many paths, pray on it, talk to God and choose the right one for you. It's serious business folks so take it as such. You know what I mean. You know down deep in your knower what I mean (smile).
From the other direction, I was calling Your Name ❤
Strangers stopping strangers, just to shake their hand... lovely lines...

I was born in the wrong generation. I just came back from Gathering of the Vibes and man, I wish I was alive for Woodstock. Keep grooving people and may your hearts be filled with peace.
If woodstock interests you, then you should look up rainbow gatherings and then go to one. :)
Suspence Vlogs holy shit man I was there
lol you were. it was a long strange trip.
"I wish I was alive for Woodstock"---Suspence Vlogs
You're right where and when you need to be right now. Woodstock was an economic exploitation fuster-cluck and a pigsty. You are to make of what is around you an epic. Then once it's all over and done you'll have something worth watching.
Don't you understand that we're right on the verge of cracking the code upon which reality is predicated? Nobody present at Woodstock had an inkling of the concept of "quantum vacuum".
In the immortal words of Bue Cheer---hold on it's comin'. Or as Garcia might put it:
Won't you try just a little bit harder
Couldn't you try just a little bit more
Won't you try just a little bit harder
Couldn't you try just a little bit more
---and if you do I promise you will *not* be disappointed.
Shut up bitch boy
Beautiful rendition ❤️

The wind in the willow's playin' "Tea for Two";

The thing i love about these guys is how different they were from anything else at the time. Of course there were bands who played similarly but almost any band you can listen to and tell about when they were playin 50s through the 90s even now but the dead is something completly different
once in a while u get shown the light
in the strangest of places if you look at it right
From Stockton and rode my bicycle across many times hope you get there some day. The Dead will never die words of wisdom can never be snuffed out,
As a sublime fan, i don't think you can compare them to the dead. Without these guys we wouldn't even have a sublime or a slightly stoopid for that matter.
Plus the original is always the best...always
Agreed!
You can compare the songs though because they're both playing the same song. It's not like they're comparing different genres.

I can't agree that the original is always better. Look what John cash did with hurt. I like that way more than the nin version. As stated above hendrix played some Dylan songs better. Sometime the original is just a platform
Cash absolutely mangled the song Hurt... He sounds like drunk Jim Morrison singing... it is all deplorable and should have never been released. When Reznor sings it, i hear emotion, when Cash sings it I hear geriatric
once in a while you get shown the light in strangest of places if u look at it right.. classic
