National City: K9 Officer Attacked During Suspect Search

- 08.16.2018 | 11:30 AM | NATIONAL CITY - A police K9 tracking a robbery suspect was attacked by two smaller dogs, Thursday afternoon.
Police responded to reports of a robbery outside the Howard-Johnson Motel in the 500 block of National City Boulevard around 11:30 AM. Witnesses reported seeing a male robbing a female of her purse before fleeing.
Witnesses confronted the male suspect who threatened the witnesses before fleeing. Officers responded to the scene and were directed to the suspect's location by the witness.
As police, including K9 officer Chon, were tracking the suspect two smaller dogs became aggressive towards Chon. Chon's handler attempted to remove Chon from the area while another officer tried to scare the dogs away.
Eventually, one dog was tased and another was controlled by the owner.
The suspect, who is believed to be the pimp of the female victim, was apprehended on charges of robbery, kidnapping, terrorist threats, and human trafficking.
No serious injuries were reported.

I'm impressed at how game those two little Boston Terriers were. As far as they knew, they were doing their job, protecting their home, and were not intimidated by how much bigger the police K9 was. To his credit, the K9's handler knew that, and kept his partner from retaliating. Best of all, nobody was hurt and they got the perp. Props all around for everyone... Well, not the perp, so almost everyone.

Very good canine handler very good canine. The handler did a wonderful job making sure his dog didn’t get into a fight with those other two dogs. That canine did a very good job because he wasn’t reacting until he was actually being bit, kudos to both of you.
The police did a bad job. They should have said we are here to search for someone. But they didn't. There were no notice and that is why the homeowners dogs were outside during this search. It would have gone really badly for the cop and the pups.

Los Lakers , maybe so but my hats off to the K9 for respecting the “leave it” command while still trying to defend himself and his partner. Those little dogs were extremely fortunate that the K9 was so well trained and handled. It’s a great example of the difference between a trained dog and an untrained dog.

Deb long okay but that K-9 was getting hurt they be small but their bites can inflict wounds on big dogs.. who knows if they had shots! Secondly he was dragging the dog to the car. And lastly I personally would have tased and let my K-9 get them dogs. The owner did a shitty job of getting them so I’m putting the blame on the owner not the dog. But the malanoise could not defend himself / herself

That's why those handlers jobs are so tough. I doubt any of them see the dog as just a police tool. I can guarantee all the dogs are like family. It takes so much time to develop that bond.
