    I always filter “3 ways” - I collect water into my dirty water bag through a bandanna - that gets all the larger gunk and silt. The pre-filtered water in the bag (typically a CNOC 2-liter) then goes through either a Sawyer Squeeze or a Platypus Quickdraw. If the water is at all suspect, it THEN goes in the Grayl for a final cleaning. With this level of pre-filtering, I typically get several hundred gallons through my Grayl filters before they start to slow down significantly.

    The titanium ones cap would be easily lost. Should have the same cap as the plastic grayl.

    I have the grayl, general rule of them for timing of replacement filters, using it 1 time a day for a year and then needs replacement. Buy a extra filter if you buy one

    Realistically how safe would you feel drinking water from a questionable source run through one of these filters? Sure,it is better than unfiltered water but do you feel confident it does what it says? Have labs tested water before and after being run through these filters? Also, how long can a filter sit between uses before it must be discarded and replaced with a new one? Inquiring minds want to know.

      I used the plastic Grayl for three weeks in Nepal with no hesitations. It gets harder to force water through the filter over time which indicates when to change it. And between uses, you can force air through the filter instead of water in order to dry it out better. The Grayl is heavily tested and passed better than most. But then it should for a $100 or $200 water bottle.

      It is independently tested. It’s fine.
      What is your alternative? Not hydrating?

      If you really want to ease your mind you can alwsy filter the water then boil it then filter it again I don’t it Florida swamps like that because of have gross they are and I’m doing just fine lol😊

    I love the idea, I'm always using some diy pump system with the sawyer, but since the oko filter came out I'm not sure this one does really make sense, depend how the oko will perform over time.

    • @readyme
      @readyme ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not familiar. What is the oko?

    • @BaroudeurAventure
      @BaroudeurAventure ปีที่แล้ว

      @@readyme Oko is the brand, they adapted the ISS water filtration technology to water bottle. They don't use hollow fibers but an "electroadsorptive" fabric pulverized with carbon. Not only it combines the advantages of hollow fiber plus charcoal filter but the electroadsorptive property retains a bunch of other contaminants that hollow fiber do not. That's what they advertise, I still didn't try it. And since it's made of fabric and not hollow fibers it looks like the flow rate is much better, no need to squeeze the bottle so much.

    if you dip the outer housing into a virus / bacteria source when you pull it out isnt the outside contaminated? which you're touching ?

    • @lastbesttool
      @lastbesttool  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In austere environments, you are going to be exposed to all kinds of micro threats, so yes. However, avoiding touching your mouth or mucous membranes goes a long way to avoiding contamination. The Grayl is fast, convenient, expensive, limited, and flexible. I don't expect long life, just high performance so the cost of a new filter or two is just the price of adventure.

    • @lastbesttool

      I just run it a few times with clean water and let the filter side dry until next use. The rest gets the usual dish washing with the rest of my camping gear.
