I have a "nesting cup" that fits my Grayl Ti Ultra press. It's a slightly looser fit than Pathfinder's for the Geo press. The Snow Peak Ti coffee press is an ideal companion to the Ti Ultra press. You can disassemble the coffee plunger and use the top for a lid. I fold my pre-filtering bandana in quarters, lay it on top of the coffee press cup, and push it in with the Ti filter press. This fits perfectly and doesn't rattle. Then I can disassemble the plunger/top of the coffee press, put all parts in a Ziploc, and tuck that in my pack. The coffee press is calibrated on the inside and holds 700ml. I've used it to boil two cups of water on an Evernew alcohol stove in about 10 minutes, consuming about 1.5 oz of everclear, at 5500' altitude. Great combination.

Self reliance outfitters also sells a mill bank bag that can pre-filter water to keep your filter on your grill from plugging up so soon works very well. Highly recommend it Way to go Canterbury.

Grayl seems to be taking over the outdoor purifcation industry by storm. Years ago I had never heard of them. Now they are stepping up the game with reliable equipment. Well done. I think Im gonna consider my Katadyn as a bakup since it mushes down to nothing and pick up a grayl. Camofire has them on sale every once n awile.

They started as a concept on fund me and have gone through upgrade improvements in design since.
Has some limitations but what it does it does well. Never run petroleum based oils or any oil period through it. Same with tannic "swamp" water or highly particulated water.
I have used a light coat of food grade silicone grease on the seal to make it easier to press. Seems to work out well.

Marketing. There are at least six purifier on market, workinkg on the same principia. All of them are cheaper and simplier to use. All of them have performance confirmedy by laboratory testy.
Most hard example is 4Swiss, with double membranę, cost 30usd and fitration capability 3600 liters..

Based on input from others and personal experience, I recommend using a millbank bag to extend the life of the filter. Also, if you don't use it frequently, allow the filter to dry out. Don't store it wet. Lastly, don't store a wet filter in excessive heat or cold.

The Millbanks bag was inverted by the British during WW1. Think endless trench warfare and the logistics problems on the front.
The millbanks has tightly woven canvas fabric that filters most detritus, particles even large cellular forms. It doesnt filter all bacteria or virus or chemicals/pesticides. Sometimes the water has to be poured through 2-3 times before it runs clear. It still should be filtered or boiled or chemically treated.
I was looking at making my own but sourcing tight weave canvas that hasn't been treated with waterproof silicone or fireproofing chemicals can be dificult. Best to go with quality.
Amazon sells the original version reproduced by a new company. And of course Pathfinders sells their version.
They both run around $20.00 ea. I've bought 3 and plan to pick up more.
With a carry strap you can attach one to the side of your grayle!

One of the biggest issues I have is, I will let myself get too dehydrated by not paying attention. I have been researching bottles and filter straws to use when riding or hiking and i have to say your video was very helpful and helping me figure out the various kinds of Grayl bottles. Like you, everyone who uses one likes them, but they usually are talking about a specific Grayl bottle, your video was one of the better once I found that explained that the filter system was all the same, and the names only had to do with size, style or a specific attribute. So thank you.

  • @WhiteOak26

Man, I love my Geopress and hate it at the same time. It’s perfect for the car, house and hiking but for deep woods overnighters, i tend to take the sawyer. The Geopress is heavy for long distance and bulky for the amount of spare water it carries. I’ll tote it in the dry season when water is stagnant but tend to revert back to the Sawyer in the wetter season when water is flowing.

I have the larger grayl. You don’t think it’s heavy but after a 20 mile hike or a 3rd day of a hunt, you can feel every once. I find myself not grabbing it as I head out the door to hunt white tail or elk for this very reason. Hell, I often pass up Nalgene bottles for the same reason and grab the large smart water bottle instead. Unless I’m not heading back to the cabin at the end of the day, I usually pass on it. It often stays under the seat of my truck in the event of a zombie apocalypse. I’d love to say I always grab it but I don’t. It may be good for those hiking trails that have water onsite at camps but say it’s not potable. I’d rather have a short wider cook pot as well I think. Just my two cents. The comfort of knowing your water is mostly safe is a good thing though and I like the idea of using it at home if ever needed.

I’ve been giving my siblings a geopress each, still have to get 4 more this year. Then I’ll start on my nephews and nieces and their families. I should start collecting millbank bag filters to give them primary filters to remove particulates before filling the geopress purifiers. My younger brother and his wife travelled to Portugal and did a 3 day hike using their geopress purifiers and they were pretty impressed with them. They also used them sightseeing in the cities filling them from public drinking water fountains, which are pretty sketchy sources of drinking water, and had no health issues, at all.

Well, EASY FIX... carry along a light-weight and small dimensions, collapsible water bladder of sorts and simply fill it up from the Grayl. Draw from the folding container first and your bottle is always there. I personally love the smaller size, built in fire-ready outer container, and non-fixed handle. Thank you for this video.

The only thing that bugs me about the Pathfinder "cup" is that you are nesting the outside of the Grayl in it, but that's the "dirty-water" part. I worry that folks might forget to think. Don't turn around and use that cup to drink out of. The cup is meant to be for gathering the water, or for transferring the water into a pre-filter bag or into the Grayl. The cup isn't for drinking out of even though we're calling it a "cup." Every time you slide the outside of the Grayl into the cup, you're contaminating the inside of the cup. So the only time you should be drinking out of that cup, is if you've used it to boil. It's just a point that I don't see anybody explicitly addressing. Like I say, I always worry that folks are going to forget to think. Maybe I'm making too much out of this...

So how long does a new filter last after its been used fir th4 first time? Can I go fishing with it today, wash the canister, put it away for 4 weeks? After a while will the filter be useless?

In case anyone is watching in the future, Grayl now do a Ti Geopress with a lid for the outer cup for boiling water. I’ve used a standard Geo for years in several countries, now have a Ti version as well.

do you really count how many times you press? or how do you do? I honestly didn't count how many times I pressed with my ultrapress, but today for example I felt that it had started to drip, I thought it had to be changed and changed it, I honestly don't know how long I used it or pressed it. how are you doing?

I use it for trips to foreign countries like Mexico with unreliable hotel water safety. Cleans the tap water for a quick cup of instant coffee or lipton's chicken noodle soup! Montezuma's Revenge is no joke!
