It takes about 1 hour from the base village to reach the top of the fort. The route passes through dense forest with large mango trees. The rock-cut steps on the hill's eastern ridge lead to the top of the fort. There is a small empty rock-cut cave on the northern edge of the fort, but the steps are very short. The Battle of Umberkhind
In 1660, Shaiista Khan, the Subedar of the Mughals in the Deccan, came south and stayed in Pune. In June 1660, Shaiista Khan conquered Shivaji Maharaj’s fort and won the Battle of Chakan. At the end of 1660, Adil Shah’s fort at Paranda was captured by Mughal commander Kartalab Khan. In early 1661, Shaiista Khan sent Kartalab Khan to capture areas in the northern Konkan region such as Chaul, Kalyan, Bhivandi, Panvel, and Nagothane. Kartalab Khan, along with Kachhava, Chaturbhuj Chauhan, Amar Singh Chandrawat, Mitrasen and his brother, Sarge Rao Gade, Savitribai alias Raybaghna, Jaswantrao Kokate, and Jadhavrao participated as Mughal commanders in this campaign.
On February 2, 1661, under Kartalab Khan’s leadership, the Mughal army moved from Pune towards the Bor Ghat pass, but instead of proceeding towards Bor Ghat, they descended towards Umberkhind. The Mughal army advanced towards Umberkhind through narrow paths resembling valleys. As the Mughal army descended the pass, they encountered resistance from Shivaji Maharaj’s forces, who attacked them with arrows and bullets.
Mughal commanders Mitrasen and Amar Singh also retaliated against the Maratha army with arrows. The Maratha army, fighting guerrilla warfare in the jungle and hills, harassed the Mughal soldiers, who were forced to retreat whenever they found a path. However, all paths were blocked by Shivaji Maharaj’s forces. As the Mughal army faced fierce opposition from the Maratha army, Kartalab Khan sought permission from Shivaji Maharaj to withdraw from the region.
A messenger sent by Kartalab Khan conveyed his request for safe passage out of the region. Shivaji Maharaj accepted the request, and Kartalab Khan, along with other Mughal commanders, sent a surrender letter to Shivaji Maharaj. In different parts of Umberkhind, where the Maratha army was engaged in battle, messages of truce were sent, and the Mughal army was allowed to retreat.
Having suffered defeat, the Mughals launched another attack, prompting Shivaji Maharaj to appoint Netoji Palkar as the commander and keep him stationed in Umberkhind, i.e., in the northern Konkan. Shivaji Maharaj himself went towards Dahabhol and Shringarpur in southern Konkan for another campaign.
