This is a fantastic video. Thank you so much for taking the time to create and post this. You've save me many hours of trying to keep my engine running, plus all the time and money to pull the boat out of the water and take it to the shop. I can't say "thanks" enough. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Great info & thanks to You I did not drop the rubber plug , I was ready for it to come out , My 2015 20 HP Yamaha started right up once I got her clean & it took about 20 min like You said.
Great video. My 9.9 was barley running and I figured it was varnish from ethenol. I cleaned it as you showed and it runs perfectly. I had a small vacuum leak and diagnosed it, like you said, tightened the bolts and now it runs perfect!
Great video. He does a good job of explaining everything throughout the process; as well as providing amateur instructions on how/why things are done. I plan on using the knowledge on my Yamaha F4x.
Excellent instructions thank you!. I have a F15 CESH but expect that it will be almost identical to this 20 hp. Have a small stumble at idle which I suspect may be due to dirt in the low speed orifice. Very careful with fuel, but it is Florida, salt water and the motor is a 2011. Ignore these criticisms, from people who rarely do anything, but prefer to criticize others.
I sprayed carb cleaner like the guy on video, got it in my eye just a bit But I lost the gel coating on my eye ... so for 2 years I suffered because i did not wear safety glasses please be careful
Great video, even 8 years later! I have a 2008 20HP and had to replace the carb. It came without the idle speed screw set so I am trying to set the idle speed. What is the best way to measure the engine speed? I have an optical tach, but am getting erratic readings. I have the reflective tape on the flywheel. Would a pickup on an ignition wire be more reliable? Thanks!! ...and, again, great video!!
The line from my water pump (Yamaha calls it a “pipe”) Had a crack in it and was spraying a mist of saltwater under the cowling right next to the carburetor. That is how my carburetor problems started.
I have a 2014 Yami 4 stroke that will start 1st or 2nd pull and revs wide open in N no problem. Has an intermittent miss in one of the cylinders. Went through and cleaned carb after previous owner let it sit with varnish gas. As soon as I take it in the water, it has a horrible intermittent miss when Im in gear above 1/8 - 1/4 throttle. It seems like it's going to die but never does. I just replaced both plugs but I believe it to be electrical because of how quickly the 1 cylinder cuts in and out. The top plug did appear darker but not by much (hence the intermittent miss). Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Hi I have the same engine and after 10 mins of use at full throttle it bogs down so I go to mid throttle and when I speed it up it happens again usually when I hit a wave it triggers it to bog down. Do you think it's the high speed jet valve?
Think about it. You're at full throttle for 10 minutes, all good and dandy. How could it be the high speed jet then? Could be a float issue if the float is sticking.
Thank you for the video. My engine died after coming of throttle and got stranded for 2 hours in the shipping lane. Turned out to be the rubber cap under the small jet come loose and caused over flooding. Spent hours trying to figure why it wouldn't start all because of the cap. Meh design tbh.
Ethanol in itself is not the cause. Ethanol is a great solvent and burns cleaner than gasoline. Heck, I've been running 85% ethanol in my car for 8 years, the engine is clean as a baby bum inside. The problem is that ethanol attracts water. Where there is water there is gunk. That then starts building up in your carburetor, fuel lines, fuel tank and so on. This wouldn't be much of a problem in a car where the fuel gets used up fairly quickly. On the water however, there's logically more humid air and the fuel is left in the tank for longer periods of time, and that's why people prefer less ethanol in their marine engines. Ethanol free fuel stays good for longer. Fresh out the pump there's nothing bad in having a little ethanol in the fuel.
Can anyone help? I have stripped and cleaned my yam f15 fourststroks carb, but still wont idle. Had idle jet out lots of times,is completely clear. Motor runs great on main, but no idle at all... any ideas folks? Have I missed something? Fuel pump is healthy, brand new float needle, float works perfectly. I am baffled!🤪🤪⚓️ also has brand new plugs, clean fuel,etc....
@@vancityflyguy I believe the issue was that although I had cleaned the carb, jets and fuel system, there was still some deposits of corroded aluminium which I hadn’t managed to shift, lurking in some of the smaller passageways inside the carb- it would run perfectly for a while ,then another piece would dislodge and block the idle jet again. This happened many times, probably if I had access to an ultrasonic cleaner and an airline,I could have saved a lot of time and hassle. Replacement carbs are very cheap on eBay etc, granted they’re Chinesium copies. My carb is pretty worn out,so perhaps I’ll try a Chinese one and see how that goes.
Always wear gloves when using carb spray or gasoline - never let it get on your skin and, if it does, clean it off immediately!!! He should have removed the float and inspected and cleaned the needle valve?
So my 15hp outboard doesn’t run on idle , and I’m sure I found out why. I didn’t know they had a jet under that rubber stopper. So that’s my next step lol
You cleaned the bottom of the carb first, then reassembled it. Then you sprayed all the debris from the top of the carb right into the bottom again??? This is a horrible video, both in practice and in methodology. I can only imagine how may parts you have lost.
Wouldn't it be easier just to pull a carburetor completely off , you probably one of lost the rubber plug you would have been able to access everything a lot easier and spraying carburetor cleaner all over your carburetor and it running down your motor I can't be good for your paint. And I only would have taken another five minutes.
Oh congratulations on your criticism. Very popular and trendy for those woke individuals out there. How would you suggest doing this carb clean. You probably spill more gas filling up your car every week, if that's what is causing you angst.
I have a 25 Hp 4 stroke Suzuki outboard. Currently it starts 2nd pull but will not throttle up out of idle with out dying. Suggestions? (When choked it will throttle up but sounds bogged and wont reach rpm)
I currently have an identical problem with a two stroke Yamaha snowmobile with a carb. Starts to spool up and falls right on its face. I opened the main jet plug cover from the bottom of the sediment bowl and it was filled with sediment. I'm guessing we both need to clean injectors, or jets in my case.
This is a fantastic video. Thank you so much for taking the time to create and post this. Glad it helped!!! thanks for watching!
Quick easy video to follow. Keep it coming! Got my motor back to ship shape now thanks to you.

+Vin Colgin Thanks! Good luck on the 4x4!
Great video. Just what I needed. Now I need to tear my 15hp apart and follow the steps. Thanks.
Thanks for making & posting this video! 4 stroke very sensitive about ethanol fuel & not emptying carb after EVERY run.. Gonna tear into mine now..
SKRRT UP YUH HEERD!?!?!??!??!!
Got my 8hp going. Took it apart twice but she’s running. Thanks
Very good video. Super detailed, not boring, got to the point and showed the whole thing. Great job. I'll be attempting this right now. Lol

Help videos are for help some experience is required like when you tie a shoe lace to run your kinda expected to know how to tie a lace no?
Made my Yamaha 15hp 4 stroke start again!
thanks man...a welll executed video..... mine is idling like a champ now
Fixed at the ramp. I am impressed.
nice explanation and lots of great tips Thanks!
Hi. Thanks for this vid. If I buy the Yam f15 could I fit a 25hp carb to it as a power upgrade? Many thanks in advance.... jj
If this dude hangout at the boat ramp at the start of spring he'd make some $$$ 😂

Nevermind ... I found another piece of reflective tape, probably from the prior owner. This caused my problem.
Great video. Those girls in the background were incredibly annoying though.
Chris W , agreed about how anyone they were.
But how did the motor start??
Amazing video, my carburetor do not start and is leaking a lot of gas do you think is plug ?
How can intake jets get salt in them? That doesn't sound like a correct statement but let me know if I'm wrong? Ref: 5:14 in your video.
Thought the same thing, but I suppose spray can get in the air intake.
He misspoke
The line from my water pump (Yamaha calls it a “pipe”) Had a crack in it and was spraying a mist of saltwater under the cowling right next to the carburetor. That is how my carburetor problems started.
Good stuff, Thanks Man!
All well and when you have a newer OB.... but good information
Fantastic show!!!

Did it end up being a bad cdi?

I have exactly the same issue! Will clean the high speed jet and find out.

Could be a float issue if the float is sticking.
Question I checked my spark plugs and they were dirty dark gray color I was told that my motor is burning rich?
Friend makes a video disassembling it completely for review ?
What is causing my 20 hp Yamaha 4 stroke outboard motor to soot up?
Thank you for the video. My engine died after coming of throttle and got stranded for 2 hours in the shipping lane. Turned out to be the rubber cap under the small jet come loose and caused over flooding. Spent hours trying to figure why it wouldn't start all because of the cap. Meh design tbh.
Does using no ethanol fuel prevent this?

Whats the best way to learn about outboards on your own?
youtube and if you have a neighbour or a dad or a uncle or friend you can ask them for advice

What is that spray you are using @4:57 ?
Just a regular carb cleaner, any of the brands will work, buy what's on sale
Always wear gloves when using carb spray or gasoline - never let it get on your skin and, if it does, clean it off immediately!!! He should have removed the float and inspected and cleaned the needle valve?
Stfu pussy
Love how your spilling gas on the ground 5 feet from the water
Why does that matter? and it wasnt 5 feet from the water
Oh so what. But well spotted you.
dude shutup hes helping us out fuck off and be more appreciative instead of bein a pain in people's fuckin ass I cant stand people like you
That gas will evaporate like a fart vanishing in the wind.
The amount of contamination on the grass shows the great American care factor...Amd the camera person has stability problems. Thanks for sharing
It's plastic grass.
pozdrav sa čiova puno si nam pomoga
Next time maybe put the video camera on a tripod so the video is a little more stable
How about you make a video next time, then you could make the perfect production.

Maybe you can make a video how to transform my 15HP model into a 20 HP ! Would it just be another carb?
Peel off 15 hp sticker and replace with 20 hp. Eezy-peezy.
Umm..should've fired it up for video purposes. Or did it fire up? 😯
nice way to ruin the paint on the motor with carb cleaner
eric edic That's actually a proprietary anti-theft system. Lower the value of the motor, lower the chance of theft! :)
Excellent video, attention to detail well explained, however, get a New Camera Guy... Super Shakey!

No test run video.......hmmmmmmm.
Spray sea foam and done in 1 minute. Works better
I thought sea spray was for two strokes
Those kids make it unwatchable.
Can do without the background noise

sx3gunner well I have the same problem with my 25 johnson. It idles fine but boggs at high rpm. Do you think it's the Jets need cleaning?
