  • Bones of the Knee
Narration: The knee joint is formed by the articulation of three bones:
Femur (Thighbone): The longest and strongest bone in the body, it meets the tibia at the knee.
Tibia (Shinbone): The larger and stronger of the two bones in the lower leg, it supports most of your weight.
Patella (Kneecap): A small, triangular bone that sits in front of the knee joint, protecting it and enhancing the leverage of the thigh musclesKnee osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of the knee joint. It is the most common form of arthritis and often leads to pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility in the affected joint.
    Causes and Risk Factors:
Aging: The risk of knee osteoarthritis increases with age.
Obesity: Excess weight puts additional stress on the knee joints.
Joint Injuries: Previous injuries to the knee can increase the risk of developing OA.
Genetics: A family history of osteoarthritis can predispose individuals to the condition.
Repetitive Stress: Occupations or activities that place repetitive stress on the knees.
Gender: Women are more likely to develop knee osteoarthritis than men.
    Symptoms:
Pain: Gradual onset of joint pain, typically worsening with activity and improving with rest.
Stiffness: Especially noticeable in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
Swelling: The knee may become swollen and feel warm to the touch.
Decreased Range of Motion: Difficulty in fully bending or straightening the knee.
Crepitus: A grating sensation or sound when moving the knee.
    Cartilage
Narration: Cartilage is a smooth, elastic tissue that covers the ends of bones in the knee joint, allowing them to glide smoothly against each other.
Articular Cartilage: Covers the ends of the femur and tibia, as well as the back of the patella.
Menisci: Two crescent-shaped pieces of cartilage (medial and lateral meniscus) that act as shock absorbers and stabilize the knee.
    Ligaments
Narration: Ligaments are strong, fibrous tissues that connect bones and provide stability to the knee joint. There are four main ligaments in the knee:
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL): Prevents the tibia from sliding out in front of the femur and provides rotational stability.
Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL): Prevents the tibia from sliding backward under the femur.
Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL): Provides stability to the inner side of the knee.
Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL): Provides stability to the outer side of the knee.
