I've recently emerged from five years of housing insecurity. Moving from one city to another, taking jobs just because they included accommodation, working in hostels, as a nanny, housekeeping. During this time I couldn't have a dog and my life was so empty without one. For almost a year now I've had my own place. As soon as I had my forever home i began looking for a rescue dog to share it with.
I finally found my baby boy. An American Staffordshire Terrier. He was the runt of a litter bred in appalling conditions. He was beaten, starved, bitten all over & weighed half of what a Staffy his age (9 weeks) ought to have weighed.
He was so frightened he was almost shut down & totally unsocialised. He did nothing but shake, eat & sleep for the first three days I had him. He'd never seen grass or a tree. He didn't know what a bird was - it all terrified him. If I put him on the grass he would cower and try to shelter behind me.For the first month he would shake & shelter behind me when anyone else was in the room or walking by as I carried him around our gardens to get him feeling secure there and knowing it was his home.
He's asleep on my bed beside me as I type this. 7 months old today. At the top end of the bell curve for height & weight. We've been on a five mile walk today & he tried to kiss every person & dog he saw. He'd chase those birds he was once so afraid of if I let him.
Every day I am grateful for the opportunity to do something good for that lovely little (OK he's not little but he's my baby) for that little creature. I do not understand how anyone could abandon these beautiful souls.

I have had my rescue Rottweiler for two years next month. Our bond is truly special. Last March she developed 4 cancerous tumors on her back left leg practically overnight. It was heartbreaking. I was so afraid of losing my baby/best friend. I am proud to say she is sitting next to me right now. That’s after a leg amputation, months of healing and all of my income tax check being spent. Financially it killed our savings, but as a family we knew we had to save her. She is not even three years old. I have six dogs and can’t rescue anymore or I will be divorced 😂😂😂

Thank goodness there are people like Lee who care enough to give the animal a wonderful life, even if it's only for a short time! Thank you, thank you Lee for saving Peanut. This case is so dear to my heart. We lost our precious Beatrix Kiddo last June 13th of 2023 to old age. She was 17. At 14, her arthritis started getting bad but we never gave up on her. Nor did her vet but he was astounded how long she kept going. He called her the toughest little girl he had ever seen. He said when a dog gets old, it's so important that the family create the best hospice care. I considered it an honor to care for her till she passed in her sleep peacefully between my husband and I (where she slept her whole life). You are giving Peanut that hospice care that is so vital.

My daughter and I agreed to take in a dog, sight unseen, who's "family" was going to take her to the SPCA to be euthanised because they didn't want to take care of her anymore. I worked the day my daughter went to pick her up, and she called me sobbing her heart out at Choppy's condition. She took him right from his old home to the vet, where she got a laundry list of everything that was wrong with him. A extremely severe UTI, a skin condition that resulted in large bald spots all over his body, liver disease, underweight and malnourished, extreme loss of muscle mass in his legs because hecwas kept FOR YEARS in a cage that was too small for him to stand up in, open sores on his stomach from burns from lying in his own waste in that cage, a cancerous tumour on his lip, worms, and an eye infection from being in thst filthy cage all the time. The vet was able to successfully treat everything (including surgery to remove the tumour), except his liver disease, so we knew that would be what eventually took him, and we thought that if we kept his as healthy as possible he'd be with us for about a year.
Choppy was a German Shepherd. First of all, we had to get his body healthy again and put weight on him with a good brand of dog food, but we also made him dinner many nights...his favourite was chicken, pumpkin, peas, and brown rice. Then we had to get his legs strong. At first he could only walk about 20ft before his legs got shaky, so we'd let him lie on the front lawn (where he could see the world that had been denied to him for 8 years) to rest, then he'd try again. He wanted nothing more than to go for walks and discover all the new things, and he worked so hard on making his legs strong so that he could go on long walks. I loved watching him be amazed and excited by everything...bushes, flowers, trees, the bins on garbage day, other people, every little thing that lay on the ground. One day he even helped me find 4 baby birds that had been blown out of their nest during a very bad storm. I wrapped them up in my hoodie and took them home. I had to take care of them for a couple days until someone from the wildlife sanctuary could pick them up. During those days, Choppy wouldn't leave their side. He sat by them, guarding them, and keeping them safe. He helped to save 4 little lives.
He learned to play fetch and he loved it. He learned about kitty brothers and sisters, toys, soft beds, snuggles, good food, clean water, the freedom to walk around his home where no spot was off limits to him. Most importantly he learned how it felt to be loved by people who valued him and knew that his life had importance. And he never saw the inside of a cage again. When my daughter picked him up, the monsters who had him actually asked her if she wanted his cage. She said it took a lot of willpower to restrain herself from telling them where they could stick the cage. He had no possessions that she could take, no toys, no special bowl, not even a leash because he only ever went a few steps out the door to go to the bathroom then back into the cage (that's when they even bothered to take him out).
Eventually, his back legs started to get wobbly again, and the vet said that it was a nerve issue that would never get better, so we got him a wheelchair so that he could keep going on his precious walks.
After thinking we'd have a year with him, we ended up having 2 1/2. Not nearly long enough, and much less than he deserved, but much longer than we had expected. His last day was really good. It was a beautiful summer day, and he spent most of the afternoon on the front lawn, under his beach umbrella, where quite a few neighbours stopped by to visit with him. He went for a couple walks, had a picnic on the lawn, had his constantly replenished water bowl and his favourite plushies friends out there with him, and when we came in he had a yummy dinner I made for him. He spent time snuggling with each of us, then lay down on his bed, finally exhausted, and fell asleep. A couple hours later, I noticed that his breathing had changed, and I recognised that breathing. I told my daughter that it looked like Choppy was going to be leaving us very soon. She asked if we were going to take him to the vet, but I told her that he was clearly at peace and comfortable, not showing any signs of distress or pain. In fact, he never woke up again. We sat with him, and told him how much we loved him, and (like you) what an honour and pleasure it had been to be his family and give him the best time of his life, even if it had been a short time. We told him what a good boy he was, and that it was okay for him to let go and leave, that he wasn't alone and we were right there with him. He passed after about 15 minutes, and one of my sons picked him up and took him to the vet in the morning to be cremated, because my daughter and I would never have been able to carry him.
It was an honour to give him the life he deserved, and to make the adjustments we had to so that life was as comfortable and easy to navigate for him as possible. Unfortunately we couldn't erase the first 8 years of his life, but in his final moments, I hope that they were forgotten because he had finally found a family who loved him wholly and unconditionally.
I'm sorry for rambling. Choppy was kept away from the world for so long in that cage that I wanted to give the world to him. And I wanted to give him to the world. To let people know that this amazing, beautiful, resilient, forgiving soul had been here, that he existed. That he was important. ❤❤❤

The bathing often to keep them feeling fresh and the warm water helps with muscles and pain, the carrying when the just can't do some things ( jumping up, making it to her potty pads fast enough so you watch constantly for them going that way, it's monitoring their eating and drinking, you have several medications times to give, and more. It is the greatest honor to return all the unconditional love and comfort and fun they gave you always.

@@tracyhaverstick5672 When our pets get old and/or sick, that's when they need us the most. That's when it's time to repay their years of loyalty, love, and trust, and show them how much they mean to us. If someone isn't prepared to do that, they have no business ever having a pet. My heart breaks every time I see a video about an old or sick pet that was dumped at a shelter because their people didn't want to put in the time looking after their growing needs.
We rescue stray and abused cats as well, and currently have 12. Our oldest cat, Tegan, is a little old lady now, and we're doing everything for her that you did for Beatrix Kiddo. We put little stairs in the bedrooms and living room so she can get on the beds and sofa, giving her daily meds, and buying a large rubber boot tray that we put a puppy pad on so she can go to the bathroom without having to climb in and out of litter boxes. And, as you said, sometimes just carrying her where she wants to go or where she can't get to herself (like her favourite bed on the cat tree).
I don't understand people who don't want to do those things for their senior or sick pets. I look at her little face, and I just love her so much that I want to make sure that every day of the rest of her life is a good day.
Choppy loved his baths, and he had his first one on his first day with us. He'd been filthy and smelling so bad for who knows how long. The feeling of being clean and not having that constant smell in his nose obviously felt so good. After the bath, he went crazy rubbing himself against the towels, and lying on them on his back wiggling around making happy noises. We gave him his meds, and put his cream on his bald spots, and he was one very content dog. After that, it was never a problem getting him in the tub.

Thank you for rescuing those dogs. We're facing a significant issue in Whitfield County, Georgia, similar to many other counties across the nation. It's unprecedented. My husband and I both hold full-time jobs, yet we strive to care for as many community animals as we can. Currently, we have five dogs, three cats, and four chickens. The desire to do more is overwhelming, but we are stretched to our limits. My hope is that people will treat these innocent, beautiful souls better.

Yeah, we’re in South Carolina and the need is great here too. We have 16 indoor cats and around ten feral cats we care for. My sister has five large dogs in a single wide with an expanded living room. The dogs get yard time in shifts because two of them don’t get along. She would love to take more black dogs in (four of her dogs are black), but she’s maxed out with five, two of which are seniors. We would take more cats, but 16 is already a lot, and they don’t all get along. Plus, two are asthmatic, two have chronic sinus infections, one has stomach issues, one is FIV+, two are very anxious, and one is neurotic. Food, litter, and vet bills get kind of high when over half the cats have health issues. Still, we do our best to support local rescues when we can. My niece is actually volunteering with a horse and dog rescue. She has social anxiety, but horses and dogs are her happy place, so she can talk to people when she’s around them.

Because we are in a rural area, many people dump their animals…. And they are just abandoned. A few months ago someone dumped a beautiful male German Shepherd mix, and I asked all over to see whose he was,or to see if they wanted to adopt him and nobody would. I fed him whenever he came over but couldn’t keep him.
The shelters are so full that none of them would take him and if you report it to the Sheriffs office, they will just put them down. There was no way I would do that! Long story short, it took me a few months but I found him a good home last week and now he has a forever loving home! It was worth all the time it took to email and phone and speak to people! When I dropped him off, he reached out his paw and thanked me 😢 He knew! I love the Asher House and its mission!

*Each year, approximately 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized* (390,000 dogs and 530,000 cats) - ASPCA
Lee, thank you for pointing out that kill shelter do not want to be kill shelters. We are simply inundated with discarded, abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs.
In many emerging economies they don't even have spay and neuter programs. We do, yet basement breeders add to the problem. People breeding animals simply to discard them are a huge problem in the US.

@@carolineridlington5010 that was my points, before I saw the negative comments on how these numbers are "untrue". Even if that was the case and these numbers are really half of what is reported it is too much for this country. We have spay and neuter programs and there is no need for this issue in 2024.
I used to cringe when someone would go out of their way to adopt a dog they found on a beach in the DR or somewhere overseas... usually posting to social media to get up votes.
I posted that number because I wanted to remind people that we are treating this as the disposable society that we are and we need to be aware that there are so many in need of homes in this country alone.

Things have been really rough at times, but I've never gone back on that promise in all these years with multiple cats. I don't understand people that do break that commitment to pets.
