That breaks my heart that a dog had been so traumatized that they don't enjoy human affection and touch! I hope one day she's able to trust people. Bless you Lee! ❤

She also just could be semi feral. Like born under a barn or something. Gsd's especially need the window of social training before age of 12 weeks to become pets.

This is also the problem with puppy mills - lack of socialization during formative weeks creates trauma and fear. I have a foster right now whose fear and anxiety is heartbreaking. Please say a prayer for her that it’s not a lifetime sentence, and for me that I can help her through this. Thank you.

That's not always the case, sometimes there are a few dogs who just wired different, I have two of mine, delivered the two myself, raised them until now, five years later and still does not let me pet her much, scared and stuff. I can tell he loves me and looks for me but is just not big on physical touch human wise

What's important isn't always correcting the behavior and this is where it is highlighted the most. What's important is that she lives out the rest of her life however long or short that may be in an environment that is safe and healthy for her.

These dogs remind me so much of people who've been mistreated, and are now traumatised. The emotions in the dogs are so much like us humans. Maybe that why we love them so much. I adopted 2 purebreed cats that had been bred for years! It took the younger one over 12 months to cuddle up or sit on my knee, now she's always by my side. The older one was bred for approx 8 years and is so tramitised thatbI can only give her a quick pat when I put her food dow. I know she likes it because she immediately starts to purr but her anxiety is so bad that if I walk or move anywhere near her, she rushes off. I leave it to them to make the rules, knowing this is as good as it gets but they are warm, dry, safe, well fed, horribly spoiled, and I just about cry when I see them doing happy zoomies round the house. Thank you Lee and your team for doing what you do for the fur babies. 😊❤

I rescued a kitty from a bad situation on the streets of NYC. It has taken an entire year for her to feel confident enough to leave the room that I set up for her. Now after 16 months she is exploring the whole house and has made my elderly kitty her best friend. However, she still will not let me near her. She watches me all the time but if I even make the tiniest move towards her, she runs away. I can only imagine what she experienced from humans as a stray & it breaks my heart. She has a forever momma for life now and if she never lets me touch her, it doesn’t matter because I know she’s happy. Trauma in animals (and people) can only be overcome with unconditional love & patience.

I love that you let each individual dog be themselves. These dogs all (just like a lot of humans) have a backpack of past experiences, which made them who they are today. You give them tools and space to help them grow, but don’t force anything upon them. It’s about them and their welfare and not about you, and you respect their boundaries and dignity, which makes you one hell of an example for a lot of pet owners!!!

Lee you are so wise. So many would have forced the issue and then said oh she doesn’t like me and she would be back at the shelter. The pack is her family and she’s happy and healthy and that’s what matters. You are an amazing soul with so much compassion thank you and the staff for understanding this beautiful girl🫶❤❤❤❤❤❤

Opal is happy - that is the best. Just like people, we each have our own ways. So glad to see her doing well and thriving in the Pack! Good job to all of you at the Asher House!

You love your pups for who they are, not what you feel they should be. Thank you, for everything you do.
Also, I volunteered with a dog rescue for around 12 years when I was growing up. We had our share of dogs who would always go into fight mode. I know the flashbacks well, they’re not easy to experience.

I'm sure this gorgeous dog was subjected to something truly vile... and it shatters my heart in a million pieces. But I'm also pretty sure that one day, when she's done assessing Lee and the new situation she's in, Opal will allow herself to mellow and accept human touch. Just keep letting her unfold at her own pace. Bless your whole team for taking her in! 😇

My son has a shepherd that's like Opal. Thank you for all you do for all the animals. I know I keep repeating it but I'm very thankful for those who help instead of harm.
