Loved your perspective here! I’m so confused with the decisions for cuts right now. Just saw some of the old Justice League cartoons and films are getting pulled also. This is just crazy!
I'm still mourning the loss of Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart Valley. It was an amazing cartoon with great humor and action, as well as one of the most realistic portrayals of PTSD developed from child abuse and neglect that I have ever seen in an animated show. It was renewed for a second season that never came out, and then it got completely shelved and removed from HBO Max because it wasn't "profitable" enough for Warner Bros Discovery. Also, yeah, it didn't have a home release, and now you can only access it through piracy websites. I'm STILL really pissed off about that.
I can definitely say, being aware of HBO before 1990, the practice of first-run deals for movies was how HBO and its premium channel competitors got their programming before original shows got more priority. But Netflix comes along, and a few of those first run deals were given to them- Disney included. Now with streaming services through each major media conglomerate, the original shows of premium channels are all they seem to have.
@@ladyeowyn42 I know all the ins and outs of piracy, but am moving towards buying everything in an attempt to be more ethical and support the creators I like.
The TH-cam overlords assumed I would like this video. The algorithm was correct. Very detailed and thorough. Following the Warner Media/Discovery mess has been interesting for sure.
Nice channel you have a great quick wit! However back on topic, my favorite joke to make at both mine and HBO’s expense is. “ the last of us looks great, I can’t wait for it to get canceled” sad, but I’m really not gona be surprised.
I'm also sad about Raised By Wolves, but also The Nevers which really got overlooked... And now I'm getting into Station Eleven and I fear I'll regret that as well... 😏 (Speaking of lost media)
I think Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League was a surprisingly great film, due to having low expectations. But nobody was gonna watch that in the theater. 😂
To be fair, the flash going back in time is something he did in the comic book/early animation, so it's not something they just pulled out of their ass
Ignoring JKR I also feel people are aging out of HP massively. I understand why WB didn’t do 3 random spin off films like with Star Treks Solo & Rogue One but like “The Batman” wouldn’t it be better as you’ve got 3/5 chances of hitting it big rather than 5 films which are the same story? You can make that “cinematic universe” later when people care about the characters
That's kind of sad. I was always too old for HP but I saw how much it meant to Millennials and Zoomers so hearing that would be like hearing that people were aging out of STAR WARS: very depressing.
@@Theomite I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan but I feel like it's lost its luster. I waited hours in line to see Phantom Menace but now I don't care at all to see Andor
@@whosaidthat84 Lot of friends/relatives actually said Andor was solid. But I agree about being meh on most of Star Wars content from the prequels onward. (Still like Rogue One tho)
@@Theomite I think the difference is that Lucas made a lot of effort throughout the 80s-90s to "age-up" Star Wars in parallel with the fans. You had the books, video games, TV shows/specials, etc - it was basically a "Choose your flavor of Star Wars" situation. And pre-prequels, they were all carefully designed to share canon. Even post-prequels into the Disney era, there are the cartoons pitched strictly at kids, and the cartoons/live-action shows pitched at adults. The Potterverse never really had that, because Rowling is 1- too tight-fisted with the creative side to allow other, better writers to play in her playground; and 2- modern WB doesn't seem to even remember how to make decent TV & movies, let alone recall that they have entire print & video game divisions.
@@mandisaw I think you’re utterly bang on. I saw a tiktok saying that Sandbox fandoms are how media survives, take Doctor Who or Star Trek or Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, there’s so much material there to spin off about because of the lore and expanded universe
HBO max is the worst streaming service ever. They expect you to pay money but they don't have all the episodes of all their shows. I tried to watch Dexter's Laboratory but a ton of episodes were missing.
Piracy rears its fabulous head again to remind consumers, producers, but mostly distributors why when you cut availability and create artificial barriers to your product, people go to where they can get it most easily.
Wait! How do you do the Time Warner acquisition story and the HBO story without ever addressing the AOL /Time Warner Merger!!!That disaster is literally what set all this into motion, destroying AOL, CNN has never recovered from that and obviously setting into motion all the course corrections that have us where we are now!
The boyfriend cameo was hilarious!! I’ve been saying for years that DC’s biggest problem is that they want the Marvel success without the Marvel work. Their film attempts painfully show why this doesn’t work. Black Adam threw a whole new Justice group at us that we knew nothing about, and then tried to elicit emotional pain from characters we’d literally just met that hadn’t been defined very well in the movie. Basically at this point I have HBO Max for John Oliver and sometimes Bill Maher. I also enjoy DC animated films and a handful of movies and shows. But whether or not I renew my subscription when it’s up is all up to the powers that be and how badly they ruin the platform.
I agree so that i don't have to do all the research on this annoying topic. Same with DON'T WORRY DARLING. I would much rather someone else did the in-depth research on that bullshit.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was good. A solid 8 or 9. Unfortunately, the next two movies ignored that and were bad. What is up with making trilogies where that 2nd and 3rd movies are completely different products instead of continuations of the 1st.
Can't get HBO Max in England which really upsets me as I'd like to put on a bit of Batman from time to time...... Is Batman & Co (series and films) on HBO Max? Like is all that in one place? We can't even get it in England is such a joke! What was that other one with "Terry Mcginess" was from Batman of the future or something I liked that so much as a youngster😁🇬🇧👍🏻
When they cut these shows I started thinking about canceling my subscription. Totally pissed me off. I have several other subscriptions, I can live without a service that mistreats its customers and its creatives like this.
The quick version is that they rushed it. It was too soon for BvS and too soon for JL. Should have done Man of Steel 2 first followed by a Batfleck Reboot.
I'd be very interested in seeing you break down the issues at D.C. comics. It's closely tied to the topic in this video and would make a good follow up.
Stopping westworld before it’s last season really burnt my ass. Then throw raised by wolves on top of it. I’ll probably cancel HBO now until House of the Dragon returns.
This video touches on the real reasons we got The Snyder Cut for Justice League. All those highly vocal Release The Snyder Cut fans actually had nothing to do with it. Ironic, no? The reasons The Snyder Cut actually happened are: 1) The Pandemic and lockdown 2) The resulting loss of money to the major movie studios 3) AT&T's purchase of WB 4) Studios turning to streaming as an alternate form of income 5) AT&T's willingness to sink major bucks into producing this cut. If you remove any one of those things, Zack Snyder's Justice League would have NEVER happened. .....and no, it didn't exist before then. Zack literally had to spend over a year to create it.
"I know they're just one 'Sex Lives Of College Girls' away from losing subscribers for good." This is why I don't even bother watching most new shows anymore. Too many are being abandoned on cliffhangers if they aren't immediate hits. It's sad really.
@@Theomite exactly, if anything they just piss people off and make the producers lose their followers. Who's going to want to watch a new show by company x if that company has a habit of ending stuff on cliffhangers?

I’d love your insight on the failure of CNN+. My takeaway is the company’s failure to differentiate content. News is ephemeral, not something you rewatch or celebrate. It was just so baffling - and telling.
Discovery wanted to save a billion dollars in costs for CNN Plus. In addition, the old guard gave the green light to CNN Plus not Discovery. To be honest,CNN Plus as a smaller part of HBO Max wouldn't have been a bad idea but it was as a standalone service.
Westworld's cancellation was absolutely overdue. Season 1 is amazing, and if you stop there, it's a great limited run series. Everything past it is incoherent trash.
@@ladyeowyn42 All the great episodes in Season 2 were notably disconnected from the plot. Season 2 was *terrible* otherwise. The opening mystery of 'What happened at the park?!' made no sense when you saw actual Westworld security guards at the event! And the whole MiB story resolved in a post-credits sequence!? Terrible. Absolutely terrible.
I've noticed throughout capitalism no matter how often regulators step in, there's always an attempt to quantify from those that succeed and gobble up those that struggle until we're left with a conglomerate. I remember when Apple was sitting on a pile of cash and felt Jobs would have solidified their position more as a software/media provider with it rather than build things with it, but it seems they are finally starting to get if I sell devices that need content to be of any interest or use, perhaps I should enter the game. So sometimes I see these moves and timing as a way to cut out and sell off properties to add to the catalog of others, we saw that with Disney lessening Netflix's catalog a bit with Marvel purchase, but now it got worse with Amazon getting its hooks into MGM properties (the actual maker of things like Wednesday). To us, it's stories that can mean everything, to them just properties to bait and switch. HBO, things like Prism, were actually involved in pay per view deals to provide sports, as I recall Boxing was a big draw on HBO during its height in popularity, but since sports are limited time events, movies were the content and also a way for the film industry to avoid the same censorship that free television demanded. Enter the first time I saw boobs was on a screen when I was watching it unsupervised. As far as the CW I think first Paramount was involved as UPN, then it was the WB, then the CW. In some ways it's a boon because one fee for mucho content, like Netflix used to feel, in others a hassle because focus and budgets and the dumbing down of art by popularity and trends for profit. It's a shame there's not a time governance on property ownership, the ideal would be a library of public domain or the valley of misfit toys meets the archives of the arts and film making, but this is why those reboots and sequels and other redundant things continue because often it extends the license holder time rights to said properties like in the case of the Spiderman franchise and whatever deal Marvel cobbled with Sony. Edit: And my hot take on CNN+ is just the issue with News Media in general which is trying to create celebrities out of our pundits and lawmakers, and no offense, I already know there's a circle of hell where all of the men and women of politics and those in and around it sit around you and speak all at the same time until you fall to your knees and swear to God that you always loved him.
Yea wb games bought turbine did nothing with asheron's call 1&2 and when they let standing stine walk away kept it. Now wb games blew up and if whoever bought those 2 games would just post them on steam I would go buy 12 accounts again for a 3rd time ( I really miss btp asheron's call2).
I heard that they were taking down Justice League and a few other shows that I like, that I just decided to cancel my subscription. Maybe I will come back when the WB gets their shit together, but I just don't have interest in spending nearly $15 a month to have a streaming site that might or might not have the stuff I want to watch.
What is good art is up for debate but according to the screening audiences Batgirl was about on par with a bad tv show. Protecting IP is smart as we have seen with Marvel who have opted for quantity over quality. If they know a new direction was coming it may be better to not release inferior quality work so as to not taint the public's opinion further. Marvel's reputation has taken a huge hit with a string of failures on the screen and tv. If shuffling around assets is needed to make a company profitable and allow them to move forward with better projects then best to do it all at once and rip the bandaid off, then start fresh.
It's the generative cash flows that are linked to valuations not changes to the accounting methodologies to increase artificial profits. Crazy mgt move illustrative of less competent less performant companies.
When I FINALLY was reminded, that a business can Right Off un profitable projects; I thought … hmm … time to start a business. No wonder top execs, still, have golden parachutes. Get paid no matter what. Little guy looses their job, tho. While public stuck paying for bad films placed on screens; wasting hard earned time.

BRO I STILL MISS THAT SHOW TOO
I can definitely say, being aware of HBO before 1990, the practice of first-run deals for movies was how HBO and its premium channel competitors got their programming before original shows got more priority. But Netflix comes along, and a few of those first run deals were given to them- Disney included. Now with streaming services through each major media conglomerate, the original shows of premium channels are all they seem to have.
The behavior of streaming services is driving me towards DVDs and iTunes.
I never left DVDs. And thank f**k for that.
As a pre 1990s kid, piracy is the attractive fall back. Do kids still learn how to do that in high school?
@@ladyeowyn42 I know all the ins and outs of piracy, but am moving towards buying everything in an attempt to be more ethical and support the creators I like.
And pirating again! 🤣
Honestly I’d watch a whole video of Brain going off about the DCU 😂😂😂
I’m still mourning the cancellation of Raised By Wolves
The TH-cam overlords assumed I would like this video. The algorithm was correct. Very detailed and thorough. Following the Warner Media/Discovery mess has been interesting for sure.
Nice channel you have a great quick wit! However back on topic, my favorite joke to make at both mine and HBO’s expense is. “ the last of us looks great, I can’t wait for it to get canceled” sad, but I’m really not gona be surprised.
I'm waiting for Blue Beetle... to get cancelled 😢
I'm also sad about Raised By Wolves, but also The Nevers which really got overlooked...
And now I'm getting into Station Eleven and I fear I'll regret that as well... 😏 (Speaking of lost media)
I loved the Nevers. Victorian Era X-men with Aliens was epic.
Personally I’m happy with HBOmax. The selection of movies and shows they have are great. Far better than Disney and Netflix for my taste in content.
“before most of us were born in 1990” stings 😂😭😭
Omg right?? Stings so bad 😂😂😂😂
Right! I was like Oh . . . 😒
Yeah. That hurt a bit.
I turned 6 that year...
I’m literally just waiting for Max to pull a legacy HBO show like Six Feet Under off of Max because it’s not immediately profitable anymore
This is why physical media and torrenting are your friends. One is more loyal and reliable than the other, but the latter has a bigger selection.
Six Feet Under is the best show I've ever watched and I remember watching it while it was airing, They better not pull it!
I think Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League was a surprisingly great film, due to having low expectations. But nobody was gonna watch that in the theater. 😂
My mom was more loyal to the Snyder-era movies than I was, and she did like the Snyder Cut, but even she had to break it up into 2-3 viewing sessions.
@@mandisaw - Yeah, it’s super long. Lol
I will never forgive Zazlav for costing us Final Space
You got me at the burning of the library at Alexandria 😂
WAIT THEY CUT LEGENDARY?!??!??? now it's personal 😡
And I remember having 3 channels on my huge 12" black and white TV...yeah I was enjoying the tech
Is it possible for other streaming platforms like Disney+, Netflix to buy these cancelled projects? Cause I need Legendary back
HBO max is the worst streaming service ever.
2:47 “before most of us were born in 1990”
Man, that makes me feel incredibly old. 😂😂😂
"TimeWarner became a thing before most of us were born in 1990..." hahahaha
*sigh
When the AT&T merger came to play…
The time portion split (except dc and mad)
2:48 That’s hurtful 😭
Okay, personally, I’d love to hear your full opinion of Zach Snyder, especially in terms of watchmen!! Love your vids!
Oh, yes
I agree so that i don't have to do all the research on this annoying topic. Same with DON'T WORRY DARLING. I would much rather someone else did the in-depth research on that bullshit.
10:00 yeah I mean I would have liked a Marauders spinoff. But my preferred version is basically That 70s Show with wizards.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was good. A solid 8 or 9.
Unfortunately, the next two movies ignored that and were bad.
What is up with making trilogies where that 2nd and 3rd movies are completely different products instead of continuations of the 1st.
David Zaslav: I'm Gonna Save Us 3 Million $!
*Now:*
David Zaslav: OH SH!T!! WE'RE LOSING BILLIONS!!!
Lol "In a time before most of us were born in the year 1990."
I graduated H.S. and started college in 1990.
This is a great video, and very well researched! Thank you!
that haunting pitched down version of video killed the radio star for the outro… oh you’re a genius.
How did I not know what HBO stood for until today? I grew up with this network, wow.
You didn't know that it meant "Hey, Beastmaster's On"?
@@Theomite lol, no, I didn't know that one either xD
@@Theomite lol
HBO's TH-cam channel has their original logo recently.
@@Theomite followed by "oh, it's Beastmaster 2. Nevermind."
I for one welcome Brian cameos
HBO Max is my only subscription service I use and pay for. I hate everything.
My first time seeing an episode in your channel. I dig it. Thanks
David Zaslav is what happened.
I’d say the first fantastic beast movie is good if it was just about fantastic beast it would have been perfect
When they cut these shows I started thinking about canceling my subscription. Totally pissed me off. I have several other subscriptions, I can live without a service that mistreats its customers and its creatives like this.
Yessssss HBO Max was super clutch!!!! Like the shows are quality content. I need for them to rethink this smh
Yesss
I need a video of Brian explaining what went wrong for the DCEU
The quick version is that they rushed it. It was too soon for BvS and too soon for JL. Should have done Man of Steel 2 first followed by a Batfleck Reboot.
I'd be very interested in seeing you break down the issues at D.C. comics. It's closely tied to the topic in this video and would make a good follow up.
I have nothing to add to this discussion but when she mentioned the justice league it made me think of the jugstits league
“What the fuck is HBO?” sums up HBO in a nutshell
This news still stings. Love Infinity Train a lot.
Stopping westworld before it’s last season really burnt my ass. Then throw raised by wolves on top of it. I’ll probably cancel HBO now until House of the Dragon returns.
I find hilarious how suddenly everyone wants to watch Westworld now
This video touches on the real reasons we got The Snyder Cut for Justice League.
I don't know why you even bother with cliffhangers anymore anyway. People should've figured out that they don't help renewals by 1992 at least.
@@Theomite exactly, if anything they just piss people off and make the producers lose their followers. Who's going to want to watch a new show by company x if that company has a habit of ending stuff on cliffhangers?
Nobody wanted a weird fusion of HBO content and Discovery content
That’s what happens when you inherit a company that was 3 billion dollars in debt.
BvS was like a condensed version of stories that deserved individual movies (The Dark Knight Returns and The Death Of Superman)...smh
Is HBO stupid? So much of their value is in their back catalogue
Swinefuzz says: thought I was going to watch a video about HBO Max's controversial business strategy, got a video about a rando's opinions about a dumb director, a 24 hr news network, and a fake domestic argument. I won't be back.
If there's an award for "Most amount of info in a video under 17 min" this video should win it.
Great video! Enjoyed Brian’s cameo haha
Season 2 had a few excellent episodes. Once the story left the park it sucked.
Cameo was hilarious. Subbed!
Love to hear your rant on CNN+ too, that would be interesting to hear!
I heard that they were taking down Justice League and a few other shows that I like, that I just decided to cancel my subscription. Maybe I will come back when the WB gets their shit together, but I just don't have interest in spending nearly $15 a month to have a streaming site that might or might not have the stuff I want to watch.
this video was really well made. kudos
What happened to mighty Morphin power rangers the movie and Ivan ooze and why.
From what I gathered from the source: WBD lied to their investors about the subscription numbers regarding HBO MAX.
Its crazy we allow monopolization in America. 1 company owning all that media should be illegal.
As someone born in August of 1989 that cut deep 😂😂😂 but all good. we all get old one day
Excuse you but the first Fantastic Beasts was indeed fantastic. It was the other two that fell off.
I’m still bitter that Made for Love was cancelled. That alone made me stop my subscription 😤
“a time before most of us were born, 1990.” 😂😂😂😂
Maybe I'll start going outside or something.
