Mindy obviously has deep set racial biases based on how she treats black characters in her shows. However, it's kind of annoying that every brown girl that makes entertainment has to be the next reprentation girlslayboss when shes just brown lol. Being brown or black does not make you not racist.
Yeah I dated a girl who thought she couldn't be racist because she was a Latina, but she was a white girl who's family went to Guatemala in the 50s cuz they were nazis lol, but she couldn't be a racist, cuz she was born in Guatemala so she was now a Latina. Yeah she ended up being as entitled and horrible as it sounds lol
@ash... Im curious what they thought of District 9 if theyve seen it. I got the impression that movie was supposed to be a sort of allegory for some of the racial issues in South Africa, but that I'm not well versed in the politics there enough to really understand it, as someone who grew up there might.
I hate how high school is portrayed in media even now. Gen Z school life is not as mean-spirited as American movies make them out to be. It's a lot of inside jokes, memes, and self-deprecation. All the "Popular kids", Mean girls are honestly at the Bottom of the pyramid and the acutual outcasts.
Literally either everyone else doesn’t like them or the popular girls are genuinely kind people. I mean, for me personally, I live in a town where it’s fake hicks only. Being the only goth kid, I sometimes get targeted. But it is never actually hurtful, just kinda dumb.
I wonder what would happen if they saw what schools in Central Europe look like A couple of nasty kids teasing one would definitely be because it's true, but it's not like on TV It would be nice if they also did not give stereotypes and something to which you can identify with
I'm 37 (so attended high school when the structure was pretty similar to these portrayals!) & even I roll my eyes at how stale & out-of-touch these 'high school hierarchies' are. its such lazy writing that THINKS it's being incisive, urrrgh!
They’re still using the same tropes from the 80s. I’ve talked to a lot of Gen Z teens, and even the awkward geeky ones tell me that there isn’t much bullying.
You know, in regards to Velma... I gotta give Mindy her props. Cause it takes a special type of toxic stupidity to piss off both sides of the spectrum in just two episodes. The fact that she managed to get people and review sites that would normally back crap like that mad at her is impressive if nothing else.
it's actually gotten to the point that it starts to feel like a deliberate ploy to produce outrage. but outrage marketing only works if one side is positively disposed towards it... I can't find one *person* who likes this, never mind a side.
It's not hard to be the biggest scumbag you can be. Literally the easiest thing you can do. She doesn't deserve praise for causing more division during very touchy times
@@d.r.u. first, Scooby-doo is an IP with over 50 years. It's a part of people's childhood. Grabbing that IP and use it to insult people racially, sexually and socially is just pure narcissism and disrespect. Second, this cartoon is not catered to children. It tries to be like F is for Family, Rick and Morty, etc... but then insults that same target audience. So the writers and actors are either really bad parents or they have no idea who its target audience is or wants. All of the jokes this show tells is to present something bad and breaking the forth wall saying how bad that was. Third, i'm not going to waste my time debating with a stranger on the internet who defends a show like Velma.
South Asian millennial woman here - I've never particularly warmed to Mindy because of her weirdness about race. I kind of think of her as our Lena Dunham - very witty and insightful in some respects, but utterly lacking self-awareness in other respects. I can't bring myself to dislike her because she is creating opportunities for representation. However, it's not representation I'm particularly proud of, know what I mean?
you can't dislike a person who publicly talked about sexual assaulting her employee and threatened to fire her employees if they talked about it because she's 'creating opportunities'? Time to bring back Weinstein from the jail too I guess, at least he provided employment to people. Who cares if he sexually exploited them.
If I remember correctly, Mindy outwardly said on a talk show that she couldn’t help herself and kissed a costar in a scene (Lee Pace) despite it not being in the script because he was so handsome. This is even worse in the context that Mindy was his boss and that Lee Pace is an outwardly gay man. Idk, ever since then it’s felt like the Mindy Project has these predatory self inserts for romance with actors she thinks are hot.
Don’t you know that men can’t experience sexual harassment/assault because they’re men? Just like how white people can’t experience racism because they’re white. /sarcasm
As a scooby do nerd it’s time for me to get on my soapbox and say if you want a scooby thing that goes for darker themes/ is slightly more mature but is actually good to check out mystery incorporated
I thought the bigger issue with Mindy Kaling was the fact when guest appearing on Conan, she bragged about sexually harassing Lee Pace on the Mindy Project, and threatening to fire her staff if they spoke out against it.
@@rollerturtle absolutely nothing. The audience and Conan laughed like it was a joke, with Conan saying that since she got away with it she'll be doing it more now. It's disgusting.
YESS. This is far more important than everyone on the internet saying how cringy "Velma" is. She literally admitted to being an abuser and laughed it off.
I absolutely believe a lot of her work has been a power trip since she tried that sh*te. That clip was disgusting. When someone on set asked her “what are you doing, you could be sued?” She said don’t tell anyone or you’re fired 😄🤪💅🏾 And laughed after that. 🙂 A lot of the show’s jokes a lot less funny after hearing that. 😣 (RIP to the one… “thot”… who didn’t deserve to get m*rdered? for example 💀 Mindy very clearly believes that some ppl are more deserving of their humanity in certain situations over others 😐 Just look at how they treat Norville or Fred) I can’t give her a pass just bc she’s a woman, in fact it just highlights her “I can’t be as bad as a white man” mentality
I've recently had a large problem with Mindy. Her show The Mindy Project is a show entirely about her, and then Velma feels like another show about her. Self insert after self insert, but the second time around it was using a well-known IP (the legendary Scoobert Doobert) to make herself the star again. She helped write it, she STARS in it, and almost all of the characters compliment her flattering at some point. Mainly Norville AKA Supposed-To-Be-Shaggy, who literally tells Velma she's "the main character." Low-key feel like she wrote that into the script herself to stroke her ego once voice reels were started
You missed so much, people are actually tired of her making fun of being South Asian and basically being ashamed of it as evident in her shows. Its fine once or twice but her South Asian fans are tired of being the butt of the joke. I never cared much about her but it's obvious she is insecure about being South Asian and puts that into her characters
genuinely curious about how she shows her insecurity around being South Asian? Her lead is really confident about everything in The Mindy Project. Devi in Never Have I Ever is insecure about her love life but I don't remember either of them being ashamed of being South Asian tho?
I remember reading her autobiography "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?" and being so put off and disgusted by how evident it is that she hates being Indian. She never misses an opportunity to mention how much she hates Indian food, doesn't speak her parent's languages, doesn't associate with other South Asians or even other POC etc She even goes on a tangent about how badly she wishes she were blonde and blue eyed. She seems to be the type who thinks assimilation means annihilation of your roots. Its so pitiful and sad.
@@squidthing I don't even know why authentic South Asian people would see her as some kind of representation. I mean, she is Indian by race but i don't even think she's ever been to that country or is very knowledgeable about their history or culture, she doesn't even speak the language and doesn't associate herself with them UNLESS she can use the ethnicity as some type of badge that allows her to be "different" and "special". I'm Latin American myself (from actual Latin America) and to be honest, i don't feel identified by any "latino" celebrity in the US. They have their own identity over there which if you ask me, is very exaggerated. Truth is, they often try to act like they embody the culture of over 30 countries (from México to Chile) and we're supposed to feel proud of that?. They are very disassociated from what it means to be Latin American in reality. Also, who even hates Indian food? It's very good and it's not like they only have one plate lol. The lengths someone will go to be racist, geez.
The 2000s live-action Scooby Doo movie is actually so good! Although, I feel like the OG Daphne comes across as gentle and sweet, not bratty and preppy (with a heart of gold still) like all the other versions after her are.
@@amber6329 yeah I see what you mean. But I feel like even in the 69-70’s iteration she has a little snark/attitude to her still, it was never overt but was still kinda there, ya feel? :)
It's because he is white 🤦🏼 Girls = boss, white guy = dbag That's literally how reductionistic their characters are. It's not only bad art, but it's toxic too.
Honestly, my biggest problem with her is her tendency to fall back on identity politics when something she’s involved in isn’t well received. She called out everyone being trolls when Oceans 8 underperformed and while I don’t doubt that some people are just bigots trying to take piss out of her, lumping all criticism to “you only hate this cause I’m a woman and POC” comes off as very entitled and unprofessional.
My question is different, why HBO max cancelled other animation projects and had the Velma show on? Its like they are self sabostaging themselves and giving a reason not to invest in animations. Behind the background of hits animes such as chainsawman coming out, its devastating.
With the "adults who watch cartoons" jab in Velma, its clear what their stance is on animation. Well they sure as hell ain't getting my subscription with that mentality.
I just read an article about her passionately kissing Lee Pace without his consent behind the scene on her show. She even threatened to fire two crew members that saw what happened if they told anyone because they warned her right after that Lee could sue her for sexual harassment. Her true colors are showing and I hope she won't be getting away with this vile information about her that have just resurfaced. She's a lot worse than Aziz Ansari.

I think Mindy grew up at a time that was much more racist than the gen z audience can understand. She has a lot of internalized racism-which is understandable. She grew up in the 90’s and early 00’s where I’m sure she felt ugly. Luckily the one good thing about social media is that POC are on a come up. We can find each other so much easier and support each other and we have more visibility than we ever did (not saying it’s enough but it’s more than what Mindy grew up with). I remember seeing an Indian content creator say she didn’t understand Mindy’s south Asian characters because she never grew up thinking she was smelly or hairy or being bullied for being south Asian. Which is great, but that means Mindy can’t capture her experience. This girl was used to loving her Indian self and dating brown guys! It’s a bit of a privilege we have now but I do understand where Mindy is coming from. It’s just a millennial take.
Just to add to all this, it cannot be overstated how obvious a product of her environment Mindy is. I grew up in and around Cambridge in roughly the same socio-economic bracket as her, and I have at least half a dozen friends who exhibit similar behavior. In particular, she showcases a slightly awkward relationship with social interactions and a mild fetishization of the upper-middle class, Ivy-league educated white guy (thanks Harvard; and this tracks for people in that area regardless of race, gender or sexuality). But what I see in Mindy and all of my friends who grew up in that environment (one dominated by the middle/upper-middle class, STEM and achievement-obsessed parent) that really guts me is the blatantly obvious and desperate attempt after attempt to get people to look at them; when your parents and community largely gauge your value by how many accolades you've got to your name, and not by your inherent humanity, everything becomes a performance at the cost of any sort of authenticity or principles. Virtually everything Mindy-related makes me just plain sad, because she's clearly doing what she does in attempt to be loved or get someone's approval. In short: fucking Cambridge parents... Aaaanyway, just stumbled across your channel while looking for opinions/analyses of Velma that weren't just the product of some, uh, "chud" I think you call them? Never heard the term, but I think I know who you're talking about... Really liked your video essay, and definitely subbing to catch some more!
yes!! as a Gen Z immigrant woman of color who is Indian, you basically summed up how I feel about Mindy's projects! She grew up in a time where there was more racism, and she's internalized it and now projected it onto her characters. If she had some self-awareness, I would actually enjoy the things she makes but even her hit show, Never Have I Ever, made me want to pull my hair out because of the lack of self-awareness.
The first couple seasons were ok but the whole premise was this never ending rom com which only work once the main character falls in love and there's a wrap up so the plot started to get tired and redundant. I lost interest after season 3 I think.
it moved to Hulu after season 3 I think, so maybe that's why? I loved the show and watched all seasons, but I only REALLY loved the first 2 seasons. It was less entertaining once the slow burn with Danny stopped, and I cared so much less about their actual relationship. Side characters like Morgan are what kept me watching.
if you read her biography where she talks about her childhood the only pairs herself up with handsome white men thing makes a lot of sense, she clearly felt othered a lot due to various aspects of her identity so to me this could be chalked up as herself granting herself the ideal partner as her childhood self saw it. and as someone who also felt othered i sort of get it! but in no way condone it, it is cringe. also she went to dartmouth during her formative young woman years so that explains some of it. i think she’s a little too powerful and doesn’t get told no enough written wise hence stuff like this
@@Noobmasterdp to feel excluded/reminded of your differences by other people. to feel othered is to feel like you’re not like others in the group. in this case if i recall correctly it is due to her south asian heritage and body image issues which she discusses in her book
What's wrong with it, honestly? She HAS to be attracted to other Indian guys just because she's Indian? She hasn't said anything bad about them, she just likes white guys. What's next, guys should ONLY date girls just bc that's how it works?
I think a creator doing what they please in their magnum opus is cool. But when their less than savory tropes inform EVERY project going forward that's when it starts getting suspicious. It's like Kenya Barris. Black-ish was cool. But with every show that follows: Mixed-ish, Black af, Grownish, certain patterns come to light.
I've followed Mindy's career since middle school.......read her book.......she has a bias. I think its unfair to only be mad at Mindy though. We might want to discuss how white people will give poc money to make things where they are still seen as the prize/hero. She has a bias but the bias gets her paid. THATS the better conversation. Hold her accountable but let's not ignore Power dynamics. This video was great tho
@dankbeans3391 I think that's a valid point but again I ask do we give her a platform or do the "powers that be"? And after that, isnt it important we stop supporting what we dont agree with?
why didn’t you discuss Never Have I Ever? I feel like that’s one of her more recent shows that’s actually made for a younger generation but still manages to be very funny, diverse and relatable, and while I don’t know how much input she’s had I’ve heard many people mention Mindy positively
I think people have the same criticisms of NHIE because Mindy’s self hate and obsession with white guys that treat her like shit is still front and center in Devi’s character
@@knowdaqueen177 I've been following NHIE closely and while the first season did fall into some of the tropes people took issue with in the Mindy Project (and rightfully so imo), I think anyone who's still criticizing NHIE for perpetuating the self-hating minority stereotype hasn't been watching the show past the first season. Btw this is not a diss at you, I want to be respectful! This is about the Discourse I've been seeing online which has either ignored or misrepresented NHIE in a dishonest way because this show in particular actually shows that Mindy has been listening to people's criticism and growing as a writer. Over the course of the three seasons so far, the MC Devi has had love interests who are half-white half-Japanese (Paxton), white Jewish (Ben), and Indian (Des), the last one in particular calls her out on her self-hating anti-Indian bias and leads her to do a lot of unpacking. Unlike the MC Mindy Lahiri from Mindy Project, Devi isn't surrounded by white people. Her friends are a Chinese theatre kid (Eleanor) and an Afro-Latina robotics nerd (Fabiola) and they all have very different personalities. She's called out whenever she puts down her culture by other Indians who are less insecure in themselves and she learns to get over that insecurity. In the second season, she makes friends with a an Indian Muslim girl (Aneesa) who turns out to be bisexual and has relationships with Ben and Fabiola. While Mindy Lahiri's family and Indian roots are absent for much of the show, Devi is shown to have a very close Indian family from her mother to her cousin, who becomes like an elder sister, to her grandmother. And in terms of the diversity of their relationships, her cousin has one Chinese and two Indian love interests. Her mother is shown to have had a very loving and supportive marriage with an Indian man and briefly dates a Black colleague after her husband's death. Listing off all the ethnicities and backgrounds like this makes it seem a bit trivial and even tokenizing, but the show does put in the time to flesh out these characters and relationships over three seasons that makes it feel pretty authentic as far as it's possible in a 30 minute 10 episode comedy series focusing on high school kids. I think it's a very clear response to the Mindy Project being so white. (I sometimes wonder if the trade-off Mindy had to make for being the lead in a Fox sitcom back in 2012 was to surround herself with mostly white supporting cast. In any case, I don't think there's enough criticism of the big networks and execs who are certainly all white men behind her while she's often the scapegoat in these controversies. Not saying she's perfect or above criticism ofc, just saying we need to be more mindful of the structural problems in this kind of outrage.) Now, do I think Devi will still ultimately "end up" with the white Jewish boy? Yes, probably, because Mindy seems to love the rivals to lovers trope, but the show itself has spent so much time deconstructing the "mixed-race with a white man" relationship trope and showing lots of other Indian women in a variety of relationships, including outside heterosexuality, that the show won't be sending any harmful messages, even if this is "endgame". NHIE isn't a perfect show in any sense, but it's mostly very good representation and also a pretty solid high school comedy. The fact that it's getting left out of The Discourse in this current Mindy backlash speaks to the fact that many people aren't criticizing her in good faith.
@@roadrollerdio565 honestly if people stopped watching the show in the first season because of the self hatred they are more than valid for doing that. While I agree that NHIE does probably the best job of addressing that (I haven’t seen the Sex Lives of College Girls) I think it’s more to the point that the self hating Indian trope is present period. And more so that after writing a show like NHIE that shows that type of growth, Mindy has gone on to make shows that fall right back into the same groove. I honestly think it’s even more insidious that Mindy has proven that she “gets it” by writing a show like NHIE but continues to make characters reminiscent of S1 Devi. It reads as NHIE being a way to say some people actually do like being Indian and Velma (and SLOCG from what I’ve heard) saying but *I* hate being Indian. My comment is less of a critique of the show (which I actually do enjoy) and more a critique on how even in good faith she can’t help but write the nerdy self hating Indian. While Mindy is free to feel how she feels about her culture it’s just sad that she is almost the main South Asian rep and puts down her culture in every project.
@@knowdaqueen177 but isnt that just being a teenager ? A lot of teenage girls go through an insecure awkward phase and crush on the hot guy that isn’t great. To get back to Scooby Doo, I do also feel this “let’s make a mature Scooby Doo” which you’re seeing in the promotion for “Velma” shows a lack of knowledge of the brand because of “Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated” Edit : YES SDMI isn’t “adult” which Velma is but you don’t need to be “adult” to deal with serious issues
@@psychoboyjack285 I really wonder if she thinks it's "self-deprecating humor" that we're all supposed to laugh at.... But it really just comes off as alienating her audience as "idiots". They could push a lot more of their ideological ideas around if they just made it funny.
I feel like if only they had made the characters likeable, the show would be 50% better. You don't need your characters to be huge assholes just to be edgy, you can do edgy while giving them SOME redeeming qualities. The jokes would still be shit and the plot would still be empty, but at least it MIGHT be SLIGHTLY enjoyable to watch
Even if you didn't watch "That Far" into Velma episode 2 to get too the bi-sexual relationship in the end, the relationship that preceeded it didn't set it up properly at all. The two of them start out hating each other in episode one and then in episode 2 they bond a little bit over Daphne extorting Velma in order to get her to sell drugs so she can find her real parents, only for Velma to have a panic attack at the end of the episode so Daphne can kiss her? They had a few cute-ish lesbian moments and that was it. There was virtually NO reason for them to be together AT ALL. They hated each other for god's sakes. Hell, the first episode starts with Velma attacking Daphne with a cane while she's naked in the girl's locker room. It makes no sense.
From what I've seen of the show, it really wants to be Mystery Incorporated, even down to having the characters live in Crystal Cove rather than the usual Coolsville. This show really is the definition of how shows made for kids are more adult than adult shows. You say you want to make a serious show about murder and drugs but then you undercut any of that with this terrible low brow raunchy humor that does nothing but confuse the tone and drag the pacing to a total stand still.
Funny thing is. I've never liked Mindy Kaling to begin with. I can't really explain it. I just get the same vibes from her as I do with Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham.
Seriously, why do the writers have very especific hate for Shaggy and Fred, they get treated the worst out of the group, hell why do they need the gang to be here, this is suposse to be Velma's origin, not the gang, why not make this her history before meeting the gang and use original characters instead of butchering the name of the original scooby gang
She didn’t say the office would be canceled she said the CHARACTERS would be canceled. Quote “I think she would have quit Dunder Mifflin to become an influencer, and then probably be canceled, almost immediately. Actually, most of the characters on that show would be canceled by now.”
Some of the discourse about the show is valid though. Yes, muh "not like when I was a kid", but honestly people are sick and tired of Hollywood totally reworking classic media to update it for current times. Why can't they leave original stuff in its original form? Make NEW stuff? This show wouldn't have been as poorly received if it was the Mindy project but animated. Also there's something inherently vain and shitty about projects where the creative director is also the star of it. Might just be a me thing though.
I think Mindy is being held to this standard in part because she is South Asian. White TV female creators like Amy Sherman Pallidino make the same main characters over and over again and that is not the reason she gets critiqued.
I see south Asian women say they would look the other way if mindys characters weren’t so self hating and always talking shit about south Asian women and their looks.
If a White Female Creator did what Mindy did which is race swap, they will got more hash punishment. I don't get it. Racial stereotype is 1 true issues and somehow White and Pale skin women character now have to switch races to fit the woke.
@@phil6748 This was a valid criticism after her first show, The Mindy Project, but since then she's written Never Have I Ever and Sex Lives of College Girls, where the show either completely avoids the self-hating Indian trope or has characters arcs where they unlearn the internalised racism and become more secure as people. So it's not really fair to apply this criticism generally across all her work anymore. Furthermore, the difficulty with being a creator from a marginalized community is that you want to represent the group but also be authentic and that can mean mining one's own experiences. Mindy probably experienced a lot of self-hatred growing up in a primarily white part of the country through school and college especially in the 80s and 90s. Stereotypes can be stereotypes for a reason, you just have to approach them with some nuance. She also seems to enjoy writing complicated women who aren't perfect or even entirely likeable and you get to see them grow into themselves over the show. It's totally valid for her to want to write that into her characters. Some would call this "bad" representation. I wouldn't normally agree, but if she's the only female South Asian showrunner, it might feel that way. The _solution_ is to have more women of colour create shows so they can all write the different types of characters they each want. It's not really fair to expect one person to be able to represent the varied experiences of South Asian women across generations. Like, I'm not saying she's not worthy of criticism, but I think we need to be careful that we don't set harsher standards for woc (than for white men and women) who are already starting at a disadvantage in this industry.
Idk! I kinda feel uncomfortable coming at Mindy too hard! I’ve not watched Velma. But I watched the Mindy project & the office (loved both!). Considering there is like… ONE south Asian female comedian in Hollywood lol! I feel uncomfortable telling her how to tell her stories. I think she’s telling her stories in a way that is authentic to her. Idk!
Bad representation is a fair critique, but "she only dates white guys!" is a weird complaint when quite a few white female characters in shows also date mostly white guys. It feels like the arbitrary internet discourse hates her rn so now everything questionable or odd is fodder for problematizing her.
This doesn't mean that there isn't perfectly fair criticism to be had (I've definitely heard a lot about The Mindy Project semi-endorsing anti-Indian sentiment with Mindy the character's self-hate that is never deconstructed by the show), but it mixing with personal attacks like that give the feeling of trying to perpetuate a cycle of negativity towards someone, not productive conversation
@@dcamaag709 In my experience, it is actually pretty rare for someone my age to have only dated people of one race, including their own (this is true for whites as well). She also hasn't "bashed" (lmao more like smashed amirite) white people, that's just oversensitive snowflakes complaining when nonwhite people talk about white people lol
Scooby doo 2002 is my favorite movie of all time, everyone always judges me for it, but to me they are a campy masterpiece and no other movies could beat it
Regarding the JK Rowling tweet incident, I remember Mindy confirming or at the very least liking tweets that stated that they were liked on accident, not on purpose. I didn't know about her brother but that is very problematic. She also did the same thing as The Mindy Project with Never Have I Ever as well
Great video! I went into this show actually really excited from the first trailer, specifically because of a “dark” look at the Mystery Inc. gang, but as more stuff started to come out about it, I got pretty on-edge about it. Specifically the art style. An ugly art style can be enough to turn me away COMPLETELY from a show. I started on it and the art was just… wow.. it was really ugly. The whole Shaggy (refuse to call him Norville) almost being a horrible person arc felt really forced, and the writing was, like. REALLY BAD. Like there was a point halfway through the first episode that I was like “is this supposed to be like.. Gravity Falls writing but worse? Like it can’t be for adults… but it also can’t be for kids…” It was just.. honestly horrible. A lot of gore that I feel like was just shock value without going anywhere. The 2nd corpse goes nowhere. The best character was Shaggy and I laughed a good maybe 5 times throughout both episodes and that was because of 1 thing that Fred said, and 3 things that Shaggy said. The Lil’ Wayne stoner line could’ve been so funny if it was executed better, but I felt like it just.. fell really flat. As do a lot of jokes with potential in this show. They have HORRIBLE delivery. The hitler joke felt overplayed and forced to me, and a lot of shit just went nowhere. It’s unfortunate, if it didn’t have the Scooby Doo name attached to it, it could have been another Paradise P.D. like you said.
You saw the first teaser and were really excited? 🤮 The teaser where the smugness of the writer's was basically oozing out the screen and how they were basically spitting in the audience's face while literally telling them they're going to butcher a classic cartoon.
She outright joked on conan about how she sexually assaulted a guy and then threatened her less powerful coworkers into silence and no one seems to care. Idk, it just seems weird cause part of me just knows if a guy had joked like that about doing it that he'd be seeing some retribution. And deservedly so but then why should she get a pass? Why does no one care? I must be losing my mind
Something else is she admitted to sexually harassing a coworker and then when she was told that she could be sued threatened a bunch of people with their jobs. The fact shes not cancelled proves that their is a double standard
HBO thinks that just cuz Harley Quinn was a hit Velma would be too. But they failed to realize that Harley is supposed to be unlikeabley likeable the same thing won't work with Velma.
I dont like mindy because she kissed a gay actor against his will and bragged about it in a interview. She said she would get him fired if he complained abour her behavior. Why didnt you mention this in your video?
weird that you didn’t discuss NHIE. i think it’s the most popular mindy show from recent years, and she’s said that she’s drawn a lot from her life. i feel like devi is basically just mindy when she was 15. it was a plot point in s3 that devi doesn’t like indian men, and she even got an indian boyf, but a lot of people thought it was just a throwaway plot to stop the critics from drawing parallels. there’s also an episode in the mindy project where she goes on a date with an indian man, and he calls her “white on the inside” - that’s the episode where she gets more integrated into her indian culture.
Mindy sucks, for various reasons ( which is obvious ), so I'll just focus on Velma. I haven't completely watched Velma, so I suppose I can't say anything too negative. From the few clips I've seen of it, the writing is the main issue. You are correct, the characters act nothing like the original characters they're supposed to be. The relationship // kiss scene is kind of weird, apparently Velma is having a panic attack, but Daphne decides it's best to just kiss her? The relationship could have worked out, but they needed to flesh it out, this romance just felt so rushed // forced, for no reason at all. All in all, Velma's quite terrible, and I suppose Mindy's just gotten more annoying. That's all I have to say.
Race swapped… but Fred is still white and Shaggy, the stoner, is the black man. I found that counterproductive. And Velma, the less desirable/attractive female of the bunch by western standards, is now a lesbian. Such an obnoxious trope for the unwanted female, but now make her a woman of color and it’s even more out of touch with what being subversive and actually doing these characters justice means.
The criticism that Mindy is only interested in white guys is racist af. For GENERATIONS men and women have put their preferences (and some of them even fetishes) on the screen and no one talks about it as being a problem until a brown woman shows her preference. Why is it so problematic for her to have a preference? Why is it okay for a black girl to say she's not attracted to white men but it's not okay for Mindy to show interest in white guys? All I'm trying to say is that this wouldn't even be a point of discussion if it was a man or a white woman. Mindy Kaling has never had a "fall from grace" because even at her damn highest she has constantly been questioned and devalued for her efforts. To this day there are people saying the office would be better off without her character with absolutely no self awareness or realization that Mindy herself wrote many of the jokes that they love so much. Velma is indeed a flop, but more than that it's an opportunity to knock Mindy Kaling down a peg because she's just had it too good for too long and we can't let a brown woman have that. Look how many catastrophically bad shows are put out there without the names of the people behind them (or who they are attracted to) even being whispered? I saw something similar when Eternals was released. It was a bad movie, but for the first time in MCU history the director was being dragged along with the movie, something that had never happened before in any of these movies. Imagine my surprise when I realized it was a POC woman who directed the movie. It's embarrassing how we're so willing to partake in this public shaming of POC women while claiming it's for the sake of progress (literally why else would Mindy's sexual preferences be a topic of discussion if not for the fact that her preferences aren't progressive enough?). I really think this is an opportunity for us all to do better because the reaction to Mindy in the last few weeks has been disgusting and clearly racially motivated.
People have made this argument in her defense and honestly consider Quinta Brunson... She has a white husband but doesn't base her personality around having a white partner, her show has the protagonist who's most likely her self insert and she still gave her character a black love interest and uplifts black women and men... Velma on the other hand is the fourth time Kaling created a show featuring a self loathing Indian woman who worships white guys that wouldn't even look in her direction. This isn't even about preference, Kaling still hasn't gotten over the one white guy that rejected her in high school and uses her shows as a shallow outlet
@@jameslevan3792 and? Can we stop acting like POC people are a monolith and there's a "right way" for them to act? Just because some women decide to express their art in ways that differ from their own experience doesn't mean every other brown woman has to adhere to those terms. Self loathing is also fine when you're white, but if you're brown you're racist? Also self loathing sounds a little harsh when at most she pokes fun at the culture she grew up with as a second generation American, but go off sis I guess. This controversy is not gonna age well and in a couple of months years the rethoric is going to be very different and as always the internet will act as if they had no part in it. You don't like her or her show or her performances? Valid, absolutely valid, don't watch them. But don't create this convoluted ridiculous justification that the reason why it's no good is because Mindy Kaling is essentially J.K. Rowling's second coming.
@@jameslevan3792 also, this whole fucking argument is completely shot to shit when you realize that Shaggy, who is portrayed as BLACK in this specific show is very clearly coded as being the endgame love interest to Velma. Not like any of you would know because you didn't even try the show for yourselves, you just heard people saying it was shit and decided that it was indeed shit and Mindy Kaling is a racist horrible bitch for it.
@@itsyaboyj0j0 Do you hear yourself? Where are you even from? she doesn't poke fun at the culture she grew up with she's confused as holy hell like did it every occur to you that she was the only Indian woman on the office and then when she gets the opportunity to create, write and star in her very own show, she's still the only Indian woman in the whole cast. This isn't about preferences, if you start paying attention you'll realize this chick has some deep seeded problems she indulges in with her shows
@@itsyaboyj0j0 Shaggy is no one's fuckin love interest. His feelings for her are treated as a literal joke by Velma where as she fawns over Fred despite that he never remembers her name or true ethnicity and again... We're expected to laugh at this
Mindy Kaling also defended Aziz Ansari and his bs apology. That’s when I started feeling way off about her (plus watching the mindy project years ago and noticing the obsession w white men)
As a black girl who's attracted to anyone but her own race (trauma reasons) I have to say it's dumb for people who criticized her for liking basically just white dudes in her show.
I think it's a little unfair to frame her brother's racist actions as one of Kaling's flaws. She has some problems, obviously, and I've never been a fan, but that's not really on her.
well tell that to the youtubers the normies. they also agree and say in their reactions that the office cant be made to day. she is NOT the only one with that not hot "hot take"
I just really don't like Mindy. I don't think Velma was a good show at all (I watched it all btw), but I really hate Mindy for admitting she kissed Lee Pace after a scene and laughing about how he was uncomfortable with it and how he freaked out because of her just kidding him out of the blue. She pretty much laughed about forcing a guy to kiss her and when he got upset, she had a "suck it up buttercup". Like that the f-ck?? Who would joke about that?? And she admitted to this on live TV and had little to no consequences! Yeah f-ck that, she sucks.
To me, Mindy Kaling is an imperfect role model, but one nonetheless, to a community that doesn't see itself represented often. You may be annoyed at all the self-insertion, but at the end of the day, she's still putting a brown person in the main role where no one else was. As much as I don't love all of her work, it was refreshing to see representation beyond some usual tropes. There's a lot of valid criticism towards her, but I do feel for many of the people who are amongst the first big name South Asian actors in the West. It's like they have to be sterling examples of celebrity, when there's so much mediocrity otherwise. I recall an interview where she stated that one of her characters was meant to be the standard white male or female lead- I kind of felt like that was a tongue-in-cheek way of explaining her characters' over confidence, and ability to have everything lined up for her, despite the audience not quite knowing why. I don't see the same type of criticism levelled at similar mediocre female leads in other shows... Or rather, I do... but the sheer amount of uninteresting/intolerable white female leads that exist, but don't get mobbed with hate is... Something to note . People adore sex and the city and Emily in Paris, and I'm always left wondering how these people have lives like this, when they are one note Mary Sues. I do think that Mindy suffers from admiring whiteness, but unfortunately I think this is something that is commonly found in many Asian cultures in RL. Whether we like it or not, she is a real human who is a product of her environment. Is the eurocentrism bad? Yes. But I think it's bad in all the places that exists, not just in Mindy Kaling shows. I will note that her shows do contain a lot of representation- specifically representation that is not as commonly seen. And while I do feel like her content feels anti Black at times (even if accidentally so), our communities are also frequently anti-Black, and there's a bigger conversation that needs to be had about (South) Asian complicity and being adjacent to whiteness/power... but that's a whole other can of worms. People say stop trying to take over our fiction and write stories of your own, but when that happens, they complain of self-insertion and over-the-top wokeness. Just kind of feels like a damned-if-you-do damned-if-you-don't situation, though I don't see the same type of Fury with other poor reimaginings. The live-action Avatar movie, while panned, didn't result in cancellation. Riverdale is actually popular, despite having very little to do with the original Archie comics characters... It seems to me that there are particular re-imaginings that people are more or less tolerant to. You can imagine what the main differences are... Maybe Mindy doesn't do what she's doing perfectly, but she does what she's doing a lot more than many others do. It really sucks as a South Asian person to just have to accept something that isn't what I want because it's all that there is, and those who say "just watch what's good, don't watch for representation", haven't experienced unconsciously longing to see someone like yourself framed as someone powerful and wanted and likable. Even shows I really enjoy like Community and The Good Place- fall into the common practice of putting in a lot of minorities, but keeping the leads as straight white ppl. If white showrunners are not going to put South Asian people up front, I don't really get being mad at people who decide to make it happen for themselves. Let's just hope her content gets better from here... Or that more people decide to elevate and feature a wider variety of people.
Also when she lost weight and people suspected her of abusing ozempic & were outraged that she didn’t come foreword to say exactly how she lost weight?? Wild
“She is getting in the way of the potential of her own shows” yes she needs to actually understand her audience rather than treating herself as the audience
Why just praise a show just on sexuality and race. Maybe the writing of strong characters and the production value of the show, like maybe lets cut the woke and virtue signalling horse shit out and make films and entertainment just enjoyable for once. But i guess what goes down must come up to a brighter future. i give it 5 more years till i can see 3 great films in 10 years again P.S Critical Drinker can help with your pain :)
Thanks for bringing up this topic, I subscribed to you because issues like this have bothered me for quite a while. Not just because of Mindy but a lot of diverse celebrities that should do more in representing their respective communities better. However, in Mindy Kaling's case she's shown that she's got some extreme racial and gender bias against Indian men, internalized hate that clearly runs in even her own family. Especially since her brother ended up pretending to be an entirely different ethnicity because he has a problem with his own. If Mindy actually gave a damn about indian men she would have no qualms about featuring some in main roles and even having an interracial relationship that shows an indian male with someone of different ethnicity. However, she never does, she only features the opposite in her projects. Instead she only ever showed indian girls paired up with white males, as if any other ethnicity of black, brown or asian doesn't matter. Neither does she ever feature any indian male as one of the main characters.... All crap like this does is break the self-esteem of indian guys like myself, trying to make us feel as we don't belong in western society and are inferior, and also showing audiences that women of our own race don't want anything to do with us. It's a poor representation and Mindy was one of the very first prominent indian celebrities we had in western entertainment. One that had social platform to represent all of us Indians, regardless of gender and pull us all into the spotlight with her work; but she never did.
I never cared about who the Mindy character was sleeping with in her doctor show, but I did care that she instructed her staff to only take on rich white patients. This piece of racist leadership was played for laughs in the show. I thought it was appalling behaviour. She also laughs about kissing co-workers without their consent and threatening to fire staff who speak out about it. So it’s not a case of her character being a shitty leader, but rather she herself being a terrible leader. Anytime you have to threaten staff to keep them from doing the right thing you are a failure.
It’s fine to be mad about race swapping when Mindy herself stated that she loved and related to Velma as a young girl regardless of Velma’s race, then she race swaps Velma so she can self insert yet again.
the office it was very popular, but even Steve Carel said that the office would be canceled if it was done nowadays, so i think it's weird for an indian woman to say the same and get cancelled. and she was a screenwriter for several episodes...
I haven't seen it, as I don't have HBO Max. I do have TH-cam, tho, and my subs list leans heavily to the left. I've seen lots of reviews of Velma...from guys, from girls, from mainstream creators and lefties, from channels large and small. The overwhelming consensus is the same...the writing is just lazy. It relies on low-hanging fruit and beats the jokes into the ground. Again, I haven't watched it, and maybe if I did, I'd have a different take. But the show's detractors aren't just "chuds." It's pretty much everyone. Sorry. 😩
I remember when she was public enemy #1 on Oh No They Didn’t for a bit. I thought she was coming back around to a problematic fave at least Also I kind of agree with what she said about the Office if just for the Dwight is probably a nazi and definitely a Nazi apologist stuff
Yeah, i think the office will be kinda problematic because most of gen z don't care about context and they have so much to complain if they removed the context in the office Idk why that opinion is too much, it's not saying it's not funny or is too old just that thinks change and now people tend to want much more awareness in comedy.
It's funny how the chud channels always hyperfixate on immutable characteristics of characters in a given property, instead of properly calling-out the corporate cynicism & pandering, bad writing & bad management. Even if they do criticize the corporate pandering, they don't criticize it for long, and you can hear the venom in their voices when circling back to those immutable characteristics. That's the bile they really want to spew. 🙄 And if a show isn't made you for, *that's ok* !! This Velma show doesn't look like my cup of tea, but if someone else can get enjoyment out of it, I'm happy for them. So I heard a funny clapback to the "Get woke, go broke" saying, which I owe to Beau of the Fifth Column (it's where I heard it first, anyway): "Go fash, no cash." 😅 I wish that were true of the chud channels, tho. There's a lot of money in hate-mongering. 😮💨
I honestly hate how people hate on Mindy's preference, what if she likes white dudes? who fckin cares?.... I guess we do live in a crystal era....nowadays people want to cancel for no reason...smh, its freaking exhausting to walk on eggshells, people get offended by everything
Want to redo a "Scooby-Doo" type show but with a more diverse spin, then do that. It does not need to be Scooby-Doo. I have watch a few South Asian shows that cover the supernatural investigation theme.
I wonder what would happen if they saw what schools in Central Europe look like
A couple of nasty kids teasing one would definitely be because it's true, but it's not like on TV
It would be nice if they also did not give stereotypes and something to which you can identify with

I've recently had a large problem with Mindy. Her show The Mindy Project is a show entirely about her, and then Velma feels like another show about her. Self insert after self insert, but the second time around it was using a well-known IP (the legendary Scoobert Doobert) to make herself the star again. She helped write it, she STARS in it, and almost all of the characters compliment her flattering at some point. genuinely curious about how she shows her insecurity around being South Asian?
I'm Latin American myself (from actual Latin America) and to be honest, i don't feel identified by any "latino" celebrity in the US.
In short: fucking Cambridge parents...

yes!! as a Gen Z immigrant woman of color who is Indian, you basically summed up how I feel about Mindy's projects! I believe a lot of crappy shows are merely greenlit for New seasons as a form of money laundering
Id see ads for it crop up on hulu once in awhile when it was going. I couldn't get through ep one even though I liked her in the office .
if you read her biography where she talks about her childhood the only pairs herself up with handsome white men thing makes a lot of sense, she clearly felt othered a lot due to various aspects of her identity so to me this could be chalked up as herself granting herself the ideal partner as her childhood self saw it. and as someone who also felt othered i sort of get it! but in no way condone it, it is cringe. also she went to dartmouth during her formative young woman years so that explains some of it. i think she’s a little too powerful and doesn’t get told no enough written wise hence stuff like this
What's othered?
@@Noobmasterdp to feel excluded/reminded of your differences by other people. to feel othered is to feel like you’re not like others in the group. in this case if i recall correctly it is due to her south asian heritage and body image issues which she discusses in her book
What's wrong with it, honestly? She HAS to be attracted to other Indian guys just because she's Indian?
She hasn't said anything bad about them, she just likes white guys.
What's next, guys should ONLY date girls just bc that's how it works?
@@TheEagleEnigma Then she needs to work through her own therapy rather then subject us to whatever the fuck "Velma" was supposed to be.

Do you have any examples of this occuring in the context of her now very long and accomplished career? Genuinely asking.

why didn’t you discuss Never Have I Ever?
Not saying she's perfect or above criticism ofc, just saying we need to be more mindful of the structural problems in this kind of outrage.)
Now, do I think Devi will still ultimately "end up" with the white Jewish boy?
It's not a good show at all.
@@knowdaqueen177 but isnt that just being a teenager ? A lot of teenage girls go through an insecure awkward phase and crush on the hot guy that isn’t great. And often don’t yet know their self worth or what a healthy relationship looks that. That’s the whole point of dating you find out what is actually important.
To get back to Scooby Doo, I do also feel this “let’s make a mature Scooby Doo” which you’re seeing in the promotion for “Velma” shows a lack of knowledge of the brand because of “Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated”
Edit : YES SDMI isn’t “adult” which Velma is but you don’t need to be “adult” to deal with serious issues
i find it funny that Velma called adults who watch cartoons losers while catering to a mature audience...
The jokes would still be shit and the plot would still be empty, but at least it MIGHT be SLIGHTLY enjoyable to watch
is not that unlikable characters are bad, is just the way is written makes the characters insuferable
Like the new CoD that launched, a dumb and empty plot with amazing characters
Yeah and daphne falling for mindy I mean velma was out of left field. Especially when daphne forgave velma for all the shit she's pulled off
I'm just wondering why Mindy is so infatuated with teenage sexuality.... Wasn't her previous show all about teenagers wanting to get laid :S
Does anybody else think that it's hilarious that Mindy Kaling got a bunch of (bad, obvious) plastic surgery to make her features look more European?
She didn’t say the office would be canceled she said the CHARACTERS would be canceled. Quote “I think she would have quit Dunder Mifflin to become an influencer, and then probably be canceled, almost immediately. Actually, most of the characters on that show would be canceled by now.”
Yeah, this girl didnt make a good job with this video
Mindy got hated not because she's South Asian , she got hates because her show ruined beloved character.
Only in your woke mind...
Idk!
Gtfo with that SJW mindset.
Doesn't matter what race she is, she produced as something as bad as Velma which reflects on her
Bad representation is a fair critique, but "she only dates white guys!" is a weird complaint when quite a few white female characters in shows also date mostly white guys.
She loves bashing whites but also riding them. Peculiar. As for whites dating whites, that's the norm outside of what commercials will portray.
@@dcamaag709 In my experience, it is actually pretty rare for someone my age to have only dated people of one race, including their own (this is true for whites as well). The most interesting (and fair) take on the the recent Velma dialogue happening. Thx for the video essay!
She dates a black guy and an Indian guy in the show so I disagree with the narrative your spinning.
I dont like mindy because she kissed a gay actor against his will and bragged about it in a interview. She said she would get him fired if he complained abour her behavior. Why didnt you mention this in your video?
The Lee Pace story, right? Yeah that was fucked up. Made my skin crawl when I just heard her talking about it as if it was just a funny little oopsie.
weird that you didn’t discuss NHIE. i think it’s the most popular mindy show from recent years, and she’s said that she’s drawn a lot from her life. i feel like devi is basically just mindy when she was 15.
it was a plot point in s3 that devi doesn’t like indian men, and she even got an indian boyf, but a lot of people thought it was just a throwaway plot to stop the critics from drawing parallels.
there’s also an episode in the mindy project where she goes on a date with an indian man, and he calls her “white on the inside” - that’s the episode where she gets more integrated into her indian culture.
She did an absolutely beautiful job writing and acting in the office. That it is.
As a black girl who's attracted to anyone but her own race (trauma reasons) I have to say it's dumb for people who criticized her for liking basically just white dudes in her show.
It's fetishizing, it's beyond simple referencing of someone personal interests. It just outright conveys her fetish towards white men.
Same I’m black (but was adopted into a white family) and I’m more attracted to white women
Unpack this.
The problem arises when she starts bashing what she actually desires. It's like the homophobe who is actually gay.
@replying to morons it's clearly a self insert. So it kind of is about her.
Her greatest talent as an actor was pretending to be likeable.
I think it's a little unfair to frame her brother's racist actions as one of Kaling's flaws. She has some problems, obviously, and I've never been a fan, but that's not really on her.
well tell that to the youtubers the normies. they also agree and say in their reactions that the office cant be made to day. she is NOT the only one with that not hot "hot take"
Calling people who makes videos shitting on Velma as those who need to pay their rent while also making a video about Velma too.
Irony
Lol that quartering comment made chuckle in public
I just really don't like Mindy. I don't think Velma was a good show at all (I watched it all btw), but I really hate Mindy for admitting she kissed Lee Pace after a scene and laughing about how he was uncomfortable with it and how he freaked out because of her just kidding him out of the blue. She pretty much laughed about forcing a guy to kiss her and when he got upset, she had a "suck it up buttercup". Like that the f-ck?? Who would joke about that?? And she admitted to this on live TV and had little to no consequences! Yeah f-ck that, she sucks.
*kissing him out of the blue, sorry for that typo
Incoherent SJW speak.
To me she's always been the really abrasive and annoying chick in basically every thing she's ever done so I'm not surprised with this new Velma show
Also when she lost weight and people suspected her of abusing ozempic & were outraged that she didn’t come foreword to say exactly how she lost weight?? Wild
No one was in love with 😭😭
SLOCG is fyckin goated though
i remember tamil disapora always called her out on how she pronounces her own surname, or that one video where she's cooking with kamala 😭
“She is getting in the way of the potential of her own shows” yes she needs to actually understand her audience rather than treating herself as the audience
Why just praise a show
just on sexuality and race.
Critical Drinker is garbage.
Because the cult of identity thrives off it. Just sit back with some popcorn and watch the dumpster burn.
Anytime you have to threaten staff to keep them from doing the right thing you are a failure.
great video
I hated her since the beginning of time. 😂😂
It’s fine to be mad about race swapping when Mindy herself stated that she loved and related to Velma as a young girl regardless of Velma’s race, then she race swaps Velma so she can self insert yet again.
This is a good video, I enjoyed it a lot.
the office it was very popular, but even Steve Carel said that the office would be canceled if it was done nowadays, so i think it's weird for an indian woman to say the same and get cancelled. and she was a screenwriter for several episodes...
"grown ups" getting vexxed over scooby doo. Gotta love 2023 already
Gotta aay something otherwise they'll keep making this crap
Her bro pretended to be black but it later became obvious that his color had little to do with him getting in. Google it.
That's absolutely insane. I had no idea. How come no one talks about this?
She also pissed off fans of “Never Have I Ever” by having the MC wind up with the toxic white boy who spent years teasing her.
Literally hot off the press !!!
Nobody was ever in love lmao
Really well done video that cuts through all the BS
I thought she was coming back around to a problematic fave at least
Also I kind of agree with what she said about the Office if just for the Dwight is probably a nazi and definitely a Nazi apologist stuff
Yeah, i think the office will be kinda problematic because most of gen z don't care about context and they have so much to complain if they removed the context in the office
Idk why that opinion is too much, it's not saying it's not funny or is too old just that thinks change and now people tend to want much more awareness in comedy.
I don't care about spoilers, but I absolutely *love* spoiler Juno! They're so cute!
And if a show isn't made you for, *that's ok* !!
20% of the US population is Latinx. 1 out of 5 Americans. Mindys shows have zero Latinx. Same with white lotus. Community...etc
Want to redo a "Scooby-Doo" type show but with a more diverse spin, then do that. It does not need to be Scooby-Doo. I have watch a few South Asian shows that cover the supernatural investigation theme.
Velma is just a shockingly awful show, with "humor" written by unhappy writers.
