Marlin 1894 in 357 Magnum

  • This is a brief look at my newest purchase, A brand new Marlin 1894CS in .357 Magnum. I've been wanting a lever gun in .357 for years. I love working the action. You will see me struggling in the video loading the rounds. It was very stiff to load, but I've since learned the trick to loading the gun, and it has become very easy to load. I currently have over 400 rounds thru this gun. It is a very much a fun gun to shoot, however, right at 425 rounds, it developed what is known as the "Marlin Jam". This is where the timing of the carrier is off so that it gets hung up on the next round coming out of the magazine tube and the lever gets stuck. The gun has gone back to Marlin to fix the problem. I will update when I get the gun back and have a few rounds thru it. Comments welcome.
    UPDATE: 11/2014. I finally got the gun back from Remington. They kept it for more than 8 months. I had to threaten legal action to get it back. Remington CS gets an F- from me. This is my last dealings with Remington Ever. If it develops problems again, I’ll eat the cost and have a gunsmith work on it. I have about 100 rounds thru it and it seems to exhibit some of the idiosyncracies that it did when it quit working at 3 weeks and 425 rounds. When I have some 500 to 800 or more rounds thru it, I will do a followup video.
    UPDATE: 03/14/2015. I have since learned that loose screws, most notably the trigger guard plate screw, will cause this gun to malfunction. I discovered that my trigger guard plate screw was on the verge of falling out. Once I tightened that up and all the other screws I found loose, this gun now runs like a top. If you own this gun and have cycling problems, check and tighten all screws, including the barrel band screw, which when loose will allow the magazine tube to flop around and not feed the ammo correctly contributing to ammo not feeding. Keep all screws tight all the time, or loctite them in with blue loctite.

    I purchased a Marlin 1894CSBL yesterday. I like you have wanted a .357 Magnum lever action for quite some time. When I looked up and saw the stainless steel beauty with the gray laminate stock on the display wall at my LGS it took me for about five minutes to decide I couldn't live without her. It reminded me of my Marlin model 60 which was also stainless steel with a gray laminate stock, I should've never sold that little .22lr. I can't wait to shoot this new age cowboy PCC. Have fun shooting!

    Used to have a guide gun in stainless that was stiff, and rough too. Disassembly and working at it with some oiled emery paper made all the difference. Worked like a gun that had 1000s of round through it,... Buttery.

    B-E-A-utiful gun you got there! I’m willing to bet that after a couple thousand rounds she’ll be smooth and function a lot better for ya. I used to have an older ‘94 winchester 30-30 about ten years back from the 1970’s and I absolutely regret getting bored with it and selling it for something else at the time.
    You got something to be proud of that’s for sure.

    I love my Marlins (336 and 39a) but when I wanted a lever gun in .357/.38 I went with the Winchester 1873 carbine. I have a half dozen Winchesters made in Connecticut, 4 of which are pre-64’s. The Miroku made Winchester ‘73 blew me away. It’s a masterpiece. I’d of bought an older marlin model 94 but the Win ‘73 is gorgeous.

    I'm glad to hear that you were able to correct the problem. I have wanted to buy a Marlin, Winchester, or Henry rifle in 357 mag for awhile now. I've heard that since Marlin was taken over by Ruger, that the quality of this rifle has increased. Even so, I've found a few Marlin 94 gun reviews, like your's, which mention various problems with loading difficulties or other concerns so right now I'm leaning toward getting a Henry rifle (although I read one review which stated that the sights on the Henry reviewed were to far to the right but this was corrected with a soft mallet). I enjoyed this video and hope that you are still making reviews :)

      I haven’t been making videos for 2 or 3 years now. I still have this rifle, but when I can get my hands on one of the new Henry side loading/tube loading rifles, I’ll sell this one. The action on this one is ok with .38 Specials, but rough with .357 Magnums. I have a JM stamped Marlin 1894 in .45 Colt and the action on that one is butter smooth. Stay away from the Remington made 1894's.

      Wes Richards I definitely agree with getting a lever gun! However, don’t do it for other ppl. Keep flashing that AR around to get ppl used to it. Don’t let society win. This is coming from a person who isn’t an AR enthusiast. I prefer bolt and lever guns. Personally I have been working on my revolver skills.

    I have one of those myself, purchased early 2007 and one of my first tasks was to oil rub the stock, it gives it a little nicer look, try it out on a area not to noticeable first and you will see what I'm talking about. my first outing was 6 or so years back and another shooter was nailing golf balls @30yrds or so regularly ( Ballard Rifling ) we shot both 38 special white box and Blazer Aluminum case 158 gr Hollow points. Take a few tips from Marlin-loving cowboy action shooters like me -- we routinely run 60-80 rounds through the Marlin at every match.
    First, snip a few turns out of the magazine spring. Not only does it make things easier, but you can actually get another round in there!
    Second, thoroughly clean and lube the magazine tube and follower. Keeps things working better.
    Third, to prevent "loading-gate thumb", make a simple loading tool with a 5- or 6-inch dowel that will just slip inside a .38/.357 casing. Smooth and round the "business-end" edges just a bit, glue the dowel into a deprimed shell casing to serve as a handle, and install a small screw-eye through the primer hole. Thread and secure some cord thru the eye, and you're done. Then just get each bullet started thru the gate and use the tool to push it all the way in.

    I bought one last year. If you take this gun completely apart and polish all the metal to metal parts inside the receiver and replace the magazine follower with a metal one, along with a new one piece extractor this will smooth up your rifle greatly. Mine is smooth as glass with no failures to feed no function. You can get all the replacement parts at Brownells. You won't be disappointed. This is my favorite "fun gun". I plan to take it on a hog hunt this fall. With special 180gr "hot" loads. They feed and function flawlessly and pack a big wallop. Also replace the factory sights with a set of Williams firesights made for this model. 2" groups at 50yds all day long!

      @gapster46  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, this gun developed the classic, well known “Marlin Jam” at 450 rounds and went back to the factory, since it was new, over 5 months ago. They still have it because they are not making the part. I’m a very unhappy camper. When I get it back and I have some time to put a few rounds thru it, I will be putting up a Part 2 video.

    • @gapster46
      @gapster46  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeremy Childress Yes, but not because of Remlins service which was not good. I give them a thumbs down for their lack of service and willingness to make the customer happy. Turns out to be a bunch of loose screws, especially the trigger plate screw which if is not tight will cause the carrier to not work properly. I could have fixed the problem myself with a screwdriver had I known at the time. I don’t get the malfunctions anymore, but the action is still very rough. The action on my older JM stamped 1894 is butter smooth.

    I bought my Marlin 1894/357 brand new in box at a roadside gunshow that I just happened pass on my way from San Antonio to San Angelo, TX. Back in the mid 90's. So it's a Pre-Remington model. I had a choice of either .357 Magnum, or .44 Magnum. I chose .357, really, only because I figured the ammo would be cheaper. (This is before I started handloading).
    Simply put, this rifle is my absolute favourite of 'em all, and I have rifles from .22 all the way up to .300 WinMag. It's light, quick, and SUPER accurate. When I lift it to my shoulder, I feel like this gun was custom made just for me.
    I mounted a scope on See-Through rings, so I can scope out to 100 yards (or more), or open sights from up close. I later took the scope off because I wanted to maintain the ultra light and "old west" feeling of shooting it.
    Popped this gun's first cherry as soon as I got to my dad's ranch-house in San Angelo. Tacked a target onto a fencepost and shot at 25 yards. That's when I discovered that it shot completely through the 6" creosote soaked post!
    Giving that 357 handgun ammo an addition 12 inches of barrel really builds up some velocity!
    Lately, I've been seeing a LOT of talk on the forums of people desperately looking for one of these, and the prices are crazy. I didn't pay but about $375 for mine, brand new in the box in 1996. And it's been used so little, it looks brand new now. So, I feel pretty good about my decision.
    There are a lot of quality problems with this rifle once Remington bought it, so everyone is looking for the Marlin era JM branded guns. So, you have to be careful when reading reviews. Are they reviewing a Marlin built gun, or a Remington built gun?

    • @gapster46
      @gapster46  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert Zeurunkl Sounds like you got a nice gun. In the two years I spent looking for one of these, prices went from about $450 to about $1,200. Stupid rediculous. The 1894 is one of my favorite guns and if I can ever find some powder, I’ll get some dies and start loading .357.

      @Austin Goleman Henry has come out with a .357 Magnum that uses the traditional side loader and tube loader. I have a Henry lever gun in .22LR with the tube loading, so the new rifles with side loading and tube loading are looking very nice to me.

      I was thinking the same thing. I have two Marlin .30-30 rifles that were made in the mid 70s-early 80s. They are great guns. They have never failed me, but the side loading port can get a little rough on your fingers if you are loading them a lot like at the range. I was looking at the Henry rifles for this reason, but I love the marlins I already have, so I am kind-of struggling. I have never owned a Henry, but I know they are great rifles

    I had one of these I got back in 1988 and it was the most fun, wish I had kept it, but got rid of it when my little girl came along, not looking at the 30-30 and 45-70 ones as a replacement

    • @gapster46
      @gapster46  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The .357 is just a lot of fun to shoot with hardly any recoil at all. The 45-70 would be cool to shoot a few times, but my shoulder and bank account couldn’t feed one. I wish I had an older JM model. Remlin has had my gun for over 8 months now cause they aren’t making parts. Not a happy camper.

  • @tomm6608
    @tomm6608 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice looking Marlin you have there, I bought mine used in a small gun shop in 1987 for $225. It came with a few dings in the stock and other scratches here and there, but it shoots very well, it has the micro-groove rifling, so I only shoot jacketed bullets, and it does not have the cross bolt safety. I have used mine for shooting various varmints in the brush and with heavy bullets I'd use it on deer within 50 yards or less. I hate to hear that you've had to send it back to the factory for repairs, hopefully it'll get fixed and you can enjoy many years of shooting in the future.

    • @gapster46
      @gapster46  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hate that I chose to send it back to Remington, but it was new and under warranty. Turnaround time was supposed to be 2 to 3 weeks. They kept it hostage for over 8 months. Whether they fixed it or not remains to be seen. I will do a followup video after I have 800 to 1000 rounds thru it (might be a while with this weather we’re having) or it breaks again. Whichever comes first. Wish I’d held out for an older JM model. Thanks for watching.

      Recoil Is mild with .38 Specials. Good for new shooters. Recoil is still mild with light .357 loads, but it has a little more punch with full house .357's, but some will say even those do not have any recoil. Felt recoil is subjective.

    If you're still using the open factory sights that came with it, you might want to check out some replacement sights available from Williams Gunsight ... You can get a nice small white bead to replace the front, and a much better rear sight with U notch or shallow V. I've had Williams sights on a Marlin 336 in the past and it made it much easier to sight with.

You can load .45 Colt really mild or you can load them to be shoulder thumpers. Check out my video on the Marlin 1894 in .45 Colt and you will see me shoot mild loads to really hot loads. I shot some Buffalo Bore 260 grain bullets that I chronoed at 1883 fps. Those things rocked my shoulder. .45 Colt pushes your shoulder vs .357 Magnum that punches your shoulder.

    Back in the early 80's, I bought a Marlin 1894C .357 Magnum. The differences with mine are the laminated, [non-checkered] black walnut stock, non-shrouded bead sight, and no external safety button. Oh, it has a 16 (1/2 ?) inch barrel. I remember paying $194. + tax at K-Mart. I was after a .30-30, but I fell in love with the .357 Magnum carbine instead. [Make that an 18 1/2 inch barrel length.]
    Your rifle is a whole lot nicer! And, you are right. If you don't like that button safety, just don't use it.
    I learned that shooting too many semi-wadcutters and cast bullets through it tend to really foul the barrel with lead. It did cause severe accuracy problems, until I brushed it out and stopped shooting soft bullets.
    I regret not buying the .44 Magnum version, back then. Today, I'm back looking for a Marlin 336 in .30-30. Man! prices are really stupid!

    • @gapster46
      @gapster46  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cross bolt safety comes in handy when I want to cycle ammo thru it without fear of accidental discharge, which I have done a lot in my living room when I was trying to diagnose the cycling problem and when at the range I like to load 9 in the magazine, chamber one, then top the magazine off for a total of 10 rounds. Having the safety on while doing that, then taking it off when I’m ready to shoot gives me a piece of mind. Otherwise, I don’t really use it unless I get interrupted while shooting. Then I put the safety on and gently lower the hammer.
      I’ve thought about one in .44 Magnum, but I keep telling myself no. If I want a little extra power, I load some Underwood 158 grain in the gun. Those things are loaded hot and feel almost twice as powerful as the Federal American Eagle, which are loaded pretty warm. Yes, I agree. Prices are stupid.
